Do you have anything in your country that looks like slop but actually tastes good?

I actually made spinach with rice recently for the first time, and it was really good. I'll try adding lemon juice next time, like you seem to do in Greece. Maybe that will make it even tastier. 😊
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
Lemon makes everything better 😄
SoulEkko@reddit
Nono, spanakorizo is probably made from spinach, we got that as well. OP meant nettle, different plant, it's the one that you touch and get all kinds of allergic reactions on your skin. And then someone throughout history decided it's good to make food from.
lethanos@reddit
I would guess what you are referring to is "tsouknida" in Greek, people make tea out of it, helps with peeing and some other stuff. Also some people make pies with it instead of spanaki, go figure.
pemGi@reddit
came to say this lol

It looks weirder than menemen, but the dish itself is weirder too, it's more of an acquired taste not like menemen that everyone loves from the first time. I like it a lot, but it's not something that I would recommend to a foreigner.
GrgaPrticRomanul@reddit
Take the lemon slice away and replace it with mujdei, and I'll take two.

dwartbg9@reddit
Why you don't call it with the Bulgarian name?
DnDevrim@reddit

latespresso@reddit
The most basic version includes tomato, egg, pepper and, it’s national debate but, onion.
int23_t@reddit
At this point due to how expensive pepper got for some reason unbeknownst to me, I am willing to start another debate of whether we should include it or not.
Tomato, egg and onion menemen.
That-Wrangler-7484@reddit
Pepper inflation is real. It used to be something like 2 euros per kilo, gradually became 3, now is 6.5/7 euros. Because we still have our prices in leva/euro (until August 1) I was shopping recently and saw 6.5 and thought leva(~3.2 euro). But no, that was the euro price...🙄 I bought the tiniest paper for 50 cents (those used to be tossed away because they were considered "ugly")
saddinosour@reddit
I didn’t know what this was until now but growing up when we have no food in the house we usually still have tomatoes and eggs and bread so I’ve made iterations of this. And it’s funny because I’ll offer to my mother and she’s like “ew no we ate this as children when we had no money” 😭😂
That-Wrangler-7484@reddit
We call it "mish-mash" and put white cheese in it at the end.

Hethsegew@reddit
harcsa-paprikás does. chicken doesnt because the meat isn't cut to small pieces. mushroom is 50/50.
Feisty_Lady_6255@reddit
I know it may be a bit seasonal, but răcituri/ piftie could be a great example. Pork jelly that tastes great with pepper and paprika. It's usually prepared and consumed around Christmas time.
North-Library4037@reddit
Mish Mash - tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggs, spices.
Feisty_Lady_6255@reddit
Ghiveci in Romania. Literally translated as "flower pot".
Besrax@reddit
Don't forget the feta cheese. It's very important! 🫣
NoScreen54@reddit
you guys have it too? it's called fergese in albanian, but instead of eggs we add ricotta cheese. perfect summer dish
MixPsychological4728@reddit
Mish-mash literally means mash-up, so it's different, depending on who makes it. For example at home we make it with eggs, white cheese and tomato.
North-Library4037@reddit
Yeah, I guess all Balkan countries have some form of this dish.
Substratas@reddit
Not me thinking fërgesë was the only exclusive traditional Albanian dish 😂

I'm sure all Balkan countries have some form of the dish :) Our cuisines overlap.

Beouf salad. It's amazing tho it has a lot of mayo
heatseaking_rock@reddit
Nettle puree. Looks shady to begin with, but add some horseradish to it and it's divine!
YngwieMainstream@reddit
Nah bro, you need to add a fried egg or two and some mămăligă.
Suitable-Decision-26@reddit
Feta, trust me on this.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
Imma let u finish, but feta ain't got nothing on telemea de bivoliță
Suitable-Decision-26@reddit
Well that passes for feta too, so. We call it just cheese in Bulgaria.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
It's not feta. It's better that feta.
And your cheese...lol. Half of it is fake palm grease.
Suitable-Decision-26@reddit
I will politely ignore your stupidity.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
I'm not stupid, I'm not buying your fake cheese. But you and your countrymen definitely are.
https://m.novinite.com/articles/234366/Only+in+Bulgaria:+Imitation+Cheese+Sold+Legally+While+Real+Dairy+Shrinks
dwartbg9@reddit
These products are literally called 'Imitation product' and they don't write "Cheese" on their packaging. And they don't sell it anywhere apart from Metro, usually restaurants or small fast food chains would buy this shit. Bulgarian cheese( sirene) just like Yoghurt is way more known than Romanian, so it doesn't work for you to act so special...

roz303@reddit
So let's see - a nettle puree with a couple fried eggs and boiled cornmeal added? Horseradish optional?
Maybe I've been balkan all along, but damn that sounds delicious!!
war4peace79@reddit
Also garlic, garlic goes very well with it.
Eggs should be sunny side up or at most over easy.
Use polenta, not cornmeal. Grits if you like them, that's fine :)
scricimm@reddit
You really neeed to try it!👌🏻😍
GrgaPrticRomanul@reddit
This is the way!
Sea-Friendship-7583@reddit
I like nettles stew boiled with a cup of milk with fried onion and garlic put at the end. Plus the poached eggs and mămăligă (polenta). That is a delicios stuff!
Iulcsi@reddit
And mujdei hahaha!
dorobica@reddit
Isn’t that spinach? I do nettle with smashed garlic and polenta
fk_censors@reddit
Not during Lent.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
Well, if you want to be 💯 habotnic you shouldn't be eating nettles at all during lent.
fk_censors@reddit
Why, are they Haram?
YngwieMainstream@reddit
Harambe
SomeOneOutThere-1234@reddit
Not bad honestly, but is it even the same food? I’ve had nettle purée with mămăligă and smântână and cașcaval and telemea and usturoi and and and… It’s now a philosophical theory on wether or not that’s still nettles or mămăligă with a hint of them.
No-Natural2002@reddit
For some reason horseradish to me tastes like acetone
Smallest_Bubbles@reddit
Same for me, tastes exactly like acetone smells. I'm the only one I know with this opinion, wondering if there's a gene like for cilantro
No-Natural2002@reddit
Same here. People kept telling me i am insane 😂. I even figured out that store bought wassabi has horseradish in it cause of the acetone smell taste
heatseaking_rock@reddit
Try letting it ferment in some vinegar
Norton_XD@reddit
First time I've ever heard of this, it's actually good? I usually don't enjoy nettle
heatseaking_rock@reddit
God, it's good! Find a recipe and try it. I'm well aware it might be just a cultural or aquired taste, but, nevertheless, try it.
Ye_Lover_@reddit
Sounds crazy too but its mad good

merdeauxfraises@reddit
Σπανακόρυζο - Spanakorizo, spinach with rice (and lemon)
Morichannn@reddit
It’s actually so simple, but it creates a feast of flavors in your mouth. The lemon definitely elevates the Spanakorizo! We eat this very often in the Aegean region (on the other side of the coast) as well. Enjoy!
merdeauxfraises@reddit
Some people add yogurt to it instead of lemon. That’s also good!
Fast_potato_indeed@reddit
Well, I totally forgot that!
Eons ago my late mother was serving it with yogurt as we were living in a very hot climate.
I have to cut some onions for some reason…
Pigfan360@reddit
I know a lot of people love this dish but I personally can't stomach it and it makes me puke.
merdeauxfraises@reddit

Downtown_Name_3124@reddit
This is spinache, right? It's really good.
As for the question in the post, we have "răcitură" or tobă as we call it which is essentially jelly with meat. Some don't like it but I love it, I think it's great!
fragmuffin91@reddit
Sorry but this is objectively slop. And I know what I'm talking about as we unfortunately have "hladetina".
CatEatsDogs@reddit
Looks like "kholodets" which is spread among russia/ukraine and other postsoviet countries.
QuietWaterBreaksRock@reddit
Sadly, all of us have this, just with a different name, and, just, WHY?!
I imagine that aliens couldn't tell a difference between this and us
OilZestyclose6677@reddit
It's a way to process low quality meat. You can't roast pig legs, or tail, it would have barely any meat and taste horrible. Boil it until the little meat it has comes off the bone, put it on the side with a bit of that water which now is straight up collagen water and it's all of the sudden edible.
SoulEkko@reddit
I'm finding this highly informative, and also highly gross. 😂
Substratas@reddit
We don’t have the meat in jelly dish in Albania - but they have it in Poland!
CrowGow@reddit
Techically yes, there are no cold dishes. But isn't paçe just a hot version of the same thing?

Downtown_Name_3124@reddit
Agreed they are different, the only mistake you made is with the word disgusting...I think you meant to say delicious 😋 but seriously, it's fine if you don't like them. Different tastes
arthropodus@reddit
seriously, I'm so speechless every time I see people hating on racituri, like atp I am LEAD to believe that they don't know how to cook it because I've eaten that my entire life and never lost appetite
Possible-Wallaby-877@reddit
We have this in Belgium too. We call it 'Geperste kop' or 'pressed head' referring to the meat used of the pig's head.

Striking-Host-5756@reddit

CheshireCa7@reddit
The pic in the OP looks more like nettle. Also toba and răcituri is not the same thing, you make me doubt your "romanianess". Also, that pic is not really representative tbh.
LightBoxers@reddit
Toba and racitura are two different things, are you a real romanian or what?
fk_censors@reddit
Răcitură (aspic in English) and tobă (headcheese in English) are different things.

French salad? In Bulgaria it’s called Russka (Russian) salata
Dmayak@reddit
In Russia it is called "Оливье" (Olivier salad) and it is considered to be originally from France.
Itchy_Bid8915@reddit
Olivier is not from France. He was named after the author, but the author was a Russian citizen, and I think he took that name to sound French...
JerzyPopieluszko@reddit
Lucien Olivier's parents were French and Belgian, it was his birth name
CatEatsDogs@reddit
In russia there are some variations of it : оливье, столичный, зимний, etc. difference is the type of meat used in it and some other ingredients.

CakiGM@reddit
I did hear about that recently as well, I told my mother that I didn't know about something that can go in popara and then she told me about that, tho Im not eager to find out how does that taste 🥲

I love spinach and nettles.
My only trouble is that my mum used to follow the "make low calory green stuff actually filling", so she'd always load them with dairy. I developed a disliking to milky, buttery stuff. I prefer olive oil and lemon. Whole lemon, even, don't mind the bitterness.
Also from Romania btw.

kimmielicious82@reddit
what is it?
Bulky_Jackfruit_2459@reddit
Traditional Turkish dish made with wheat and meat. It’s like a salty creamy wheat porridge.
xVladdy@reddit
Salată de vinete = babaganoush
Mămăligă cu brânză = no idea how this translates, it's basically a cornmeal pie served with cheese, sometimes with cream, too
Ciulama cu mămăligă = no, I really have no idea how this translates. Search it, you'll understand better
Icre = roe
Salată de Boeuf = Boeuf salad. I think every Balkan and Slavic country has a variation of this
Griș cu lapte = semolina with milk, the Romanian version of oatmeal
Orez cu lapte = rice with milk. With the random grated lemon peel on top, obviously, otherwise "e prea grețos, maică"
Colivă = this one doesn't need any sort of translation. Just search it. The best dessert ever, served only at funerals and rememberances (parastase)
That's pretty much it for the most part. Nothing else comes to my mind. There's things far worse than slop, such as the infamous răcituri, ciorbă de borjoci (basically a soup made from chicken gizzards, hearts, and nothing else), ciorbă de oase (when you're out of that good, thick meat, don't forget there's still bones around...), ciorbă de pește (noooo, not the delicious variety; this one's made with the fish head), creier pane (beef brain, now fried like a schnitzel), picioare pârlite (singed chicken legs).

Most people put tomato or tomato paste to give it that red colour but I prefer it without.
It's basically spinach risotto (the way I like it), although Turks generally prefer their rice to be not sticky.

my dad makes леќуа (lekya) which is basically just like a lentil soup but he makes it super thick and lowkey looks like dung, but its super good!
merdeauxfraises@reddit
Valid input and it's not just a local phenomenon either. Worldwide, any lentil stew looks like it's already been digested and spat out again.
optionstrategy@reddit
Not true.
Most lentil soups have unmashed and distinct lentil beans.
merdeauxfraises@reddit
They still look like goop though, and I distinctively mentioned stews because they are boiled for longer than soups and they become mushed in the process. E.g. dahl.
optionstrategy@reddit
Stew soup tomato tomatoe...most have whole lentil beans.
Dahl is an exception, no matter how populous is the area where it is eaten.
Shmemantics must be your favorite spice.

Magiritsa or Spanakorizo
chrstianelson@reddit
I'm gonna go with Keskek for Turkey.
Wheat and meat (traditionally beef or lamb) is boiled for hours until the meat breaks down all its collagen and protein and becomes mushy. Then they're constantly churned and beaten until it all turns into a thick, stretchy goo. Served piping hot with a generous amount of pepper toasted butter drizzled on top.
Despite looking like literal dog vomit, it tastes pretty amazing.
