If you could only own 3 cars, and your budget was $250k, what would you buy?
Posted by retarded_sped@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 353 comments
I’ve seen this question out there so many times, but people throw out hypercars or rare classics that cost millions. I figured I’d put a constraint on it.
Mine would be as follows:
Daily - 991.1/991.2 911 Turbo S $150k-$175k
Usability - Tacoma TRD $40k
Weekend/Track - Ap2 S2000 $35k-$60k
What do you guys think?
TomBarnardJr@reddit
Similar to yours, OP, but I’ve owned a Porsche. In my case, Boxster. And I don’t want the $$ of ownership even if I got one free. I’ve also owned two S2000s. Fun but I actually prefer the MX-5 I have now. So I’d be Lexus LC500, Tacoma, MX-5. All that said, I agree with your logic. One poster vehicle, one fun vehicle, and one good truck. Though if I had enough left over for a fourth, I’d probably have a DeLorean in the mix as a show car.
retarded_sped@reddit (OP)
That’s a great lineup. LC500 is super underrated. Miata is definitely more forgiving than S2000 and can be just as fun. Would be curious to hear more about your Porsche ownership
TomBarnardJr@reddit
In 2012, I bought a CPO 2007 Boxster from Porsche North Houston. Owned the car from 2012 to 2019. Had 20k on the odometer when I bought it and came with the 2 year CPO warranty. Here are the takeaways:
Porsches are special. You feel special owning one. Even a total base model Boxster. Being part of the PCA and attending club meets with genuine car dudes (the club guys mostly aren’t the orthodontists. They are real car guys….but not the obnoxious tuner types.) My Boxster turned heads as I kept it pristine and I was proud of it.
Cost of ownership was insane. First two years limited to oil changes. Year three, right out of warranty, was a $12k+ year. Tires, brakes, rotors, rebuilt both doors (one for a bad speaker, one for a broken handle mechanism), replaced cable linkage between shifter and transmission which required taking basically the entire interior out, replaced convertible top motor and rods, and of course year three was when I hit my big $$ service which was the belt and water pump, plugs, etc.
Some of the costs of ownership are simply due to maintaining a car to spec that is set for 100 mph+. Porsche tire spec and brake spec are high performance. And that means $$. For a car that I only drove over 100 a few times.
But that capability came at a cost. It was dreadfully boring and almost laborious to drive it at city speeds. Contrast that to my current MX-5 which puts a smile on my face just driving to work at 60 mph, costs me next to nothing, etc. It’s hard to justify the $$ for capability that I never use.
At the end of 7 years of ownership, total cost of the Porsche wasn’t as ugly as year three taken alone. It balanced out. But in comparison, my S2000s were cheap and my Miata may as well be a Corolla.
Would I do it again? Hell yes. Owning a Porsche was my dream. I’m not wealthy. I work for my money. And I enjoyed it. But long term, I found the pros and cons list shifted for me. I’m still in a little roadster. It’s not like I grew up. But I did get more pragmatic about it.
ryguymcsly@reddit
I’ve heard from some of the porsche guys at the shop I used to take my car to that the boxster is actually the most expensive one to maintain. The older 911s I’ve heard aren’t too pricey to keep in good shape. Mechanically simple and a lot of the wear and tear parts aren’t terribly expensive.
Temporary-Chest-3111@reddit
It’s because it shares a number of parts with the 911 while being a lower priced vehicle AND mid-engined, making those Porsche level repairs seem relatively a lot more costly in comparison.
retarded_sped@reddit (OP)
Yeahhh, I was already convinced I needed a cayman, it’s just a bit out of reach. I totally get your progression though, values change over time. At the end of the day it’s all about fun per dollar. Miata wins that argument any day of the week. If I was limited to $50k and 3 vehicles (not just cars), give me an NC Miata, an old Tacoma and a ninja 650.
toofarfromjune@reddit
As someone who’s owned Miata’s and s2000s and kept going in the other direction with a lotus, I have to ask, what makes you prefer a Miata over an s2000?
Longjumping-Hat-4541@reddit
I don’t know about OP, but having driven Miata’s, owned and nb, and now an ap1, the absolute number one reason I find the s2000 annoying is that oem parts are just harder and harder to come by. With a Miata there are so many aftermarket suppliers +oem part availability that you can literally tear down and rebuild an entire Miata of any generation any time.
Also for street driving, the Miata is just really loose, easy, casual, and in general safer (from a driving standpoint) than the s2000. S2000 is more stable, aggressive, and precise, but encourages somewhat more antisocial driving to stay in the power band, and when it loses traction, it doesn’t necessarily slide in a cute and controlled way like most Miata’s.

Honestly probably keep my '20 Accord Touring 2.0t as a practical daily driver. The absolute cleanest example of a 4x4 5speed 4.0 Jeep Comanche I could find, and a 2006 Daytona sunset orange Z06 Corvette. So really 100k would be plenty for me to fill out my garage. However as someone that frequently owns 4 registered vehicles at a given time I think it's only fair I'm allowed to spend some of that leftover budget on a nice El Camino to fill the classic void I left.
There are plenty of other vehicles I would love to own, but for the most part cars I'm interested in are relatively easy to come by within a 10k-50k budget, so the only way I could see myself owning 250k of automobiles is if I was expanding the garage to own 7-8 cars.

This is too funny. I was in a similar situation about 10 years ago. I got an inheritance of about $300k and have always wanted a Porsche 911. And in 2016 I had a chance to pull that trigger. And so funny you mention having 3 cars cause as of 2026 that's exactly what I have as of today. Here are my cars:
Daily: 03 Honda Civic Hybrid
Weekend/Track: 2020 Nissan 370Z
Utility Vehicle: 02 Ford F150
Pretty sure your asking what happen with the rest of the money? Spent it on 5 investment properties in St. Louis instead of buying that Porsche. I figured the 370Z can do at least 90% of what the Porsche can do at a fraction of the price.
darkstream81@reddit
Where you right?
ApprehensiveWash7969@reddit
Regarding the choice I made? Not sure its was a right or wrong situation but will say this: my decision gave me the option of early retirement. If I had purchased the Porsche I would have a car worth about $60k, paying the Porsche price to keep it on the road, and would probably have to work till I am 65 instead of 59.
darkstream81@reddit
Then you made the smarter choice

I was being very realistic....those are two race cars that are awesome and are realistically affordable to own and enjoy within that budget. They've been around long enough that they're fairly cheap for used ones now. You don't need to spend $120k on a new radical when ten year old ones are $40k and are only fractions of seconds slower.
Parts are available, albeit relatively expensive compared to consumer cars... but far cheaper than parts for a Ferrari challenge car. they're well known and documented and a single person can maintain and operate them with just engine rebuilds every couple of years. Brakes and tires and fuel costs are peanuts.
tintinblock1@reddit
Used radicals are pretty much the best bang for your buck track car. At 40-50k it leaves plenty of room for tires, repairs, etc. And they are STUPID fast
jrileyy229@reddit
Yes, I had one for a few years... It was awesome... Just the basic entry level 200hp 1340cc... I can't imagine anyone needing the 400hp model... Yikes. And it's an experience you can share with people if you have the 2 seater config, which most do.
Like how do you tell your girlfriend or your buddy what it's like racing a formula Mazda? You just can't... Unless someone has been in a formula type car, you can't possibly explain to them what it's like laying on the ground right in front of a hard mounted motor that is vibrating your teeth out, you can't see anything that isn't at least 30 ft in front, feeling every marble on the track through your ass, your organs moving around inside your body under the G forces.
With a radical, you get to share that experience
tintinblock1@reddit
Yep. I had a 400hp model I did track days with. Got it for an absolute steal, and it never let me down. The 1340 is plenty, mine was so scary on higher speed tracks like VIR. My wife rode with me once and decided that was enough, I don’t blame her 🤣

The S65 has an engine that's nowhere near the top of what it can produce. Transmission is bulletproof. Downsides are the coilpacks, brakes (especially carbon ceramic ones), and funny enough the wiper blades.
The Aston is effectively two Ford V6's welded together. A lot of the parts are either Ford or Volvo so you can use them interchangeably. Downside is the brakes and the fact that the entire body is carbon fiber so if you get into an accident it's basically totalled.

If it’s me and just me, I’d buy an F-250/350 to tow our trailer around, and probably a simple commuter car. I’d probably go either hybrid or EV, but something efficient and low MX. If it’s me and my wife there’s probably over $100k left over so she could get whatever she wanted. She’d still probably go for her Subaru and pocket the rest.

Daily —. Volvo XC90 (I’ve owned 3, and love them) Weekend — late 60’s or early 70’s Porsche 911 Useful — Honda Ridgeline (have a 2023 now, perfect truck for a guy that does not need a truck)
I’m boring, but everything is practical and useful.

call it 50k
57 plymouth belvedere, but with modern stock engine trans, brakes, etc. probably the current low end mopar hemi(390hp. lile in my ram) already own the car. just needs the parts and work. call it another 50k.
some absolutely off the wall piece of crap that nobody wants, so I can go racing at 24 Hours of Lemons. Those cars are capped at net $500, but safety equipment is exempt, so call it 10k.
boom. 110k total. Ive got a daily driver thats cool and reliable. A non typical 50's wing&chrome car on a modern drivetrain for road trips. and a horse's-ass toy that I can roll and catch on fire and not care.
Do I get to keep the rest of the 250k budget?

Two for parts cars as my baby begins to rust away riding off into the sunset.
Can lug a ton of people around, for the time had one of the biggest boots (domestics). Can fit my clubs, hockey gear, ski-pitch gear.
Bit of a pig, but I’ll have roughly 238,000 dollars left over for fuel. They can join the herd next to the other two I own while they await their fate (becoming my daily or joining it slowly as I use them replace the parts on whatever one I choose to drive).

With my remaining $225k I’d turn my truck into a casual sleeper by doing a Coyote swap, interior refresh, new stance, and new paint (preferably Calypso Green). The Chevy Wagon would be the daily that’s also fixed up so the skin is a 53 but the guts and bones are in the 21st century. The school bus because a 40s era bus RV conversion would be cool as hell to travel around the country in

2015-2017 F-150 5.0 Platinum: it is in my opinion that everybody should have a vehicle that can do it all.
Tesla Model S: 40 mile down and back trips are frequent, it’s good to have a car that can take away the monotony of this - the best big city traffic vehicle out there imo.
Porsche 911: date night car. Nowhere to flex anything flashier or drive anything faster in my main residence so I’d rather have the best handling car that is still plenty fast and looks great too!
Sig-vicous@reddit
Probably a Porsche 918 for street, my GR86 for track, and whichever crew cab pickup. Hopefully that would leave enough cash to better equip the twin for track duty.

Was going to give my own but yours is pretty spot on, maybe swap the turbo with a 996 GT3 or 991.1 GT3. I also wouldn’t mind swapping out the S2K for an E90 M3 but i do miss my s2000 a ton so i wouldn’t cry about either. Solid picks

Yeah the s2k is the one I’d be most willing to swap out, so many great options out there.
