Ive got a few gen 1's in different calibers and a gen 2 556 patrol. They're all awesome, but the Patrol is definitely my favorite.
Howl-at-the-Moon-907@reddit
As someone who is looking to do a short 300 blackout bolt action, could someone tell me why people prefer the gen 1 American be this gen 2?
Ragnarok112277@reddit
Both of mine fed like shit regardless of magazine or different subsonic bullets/ overall lengths
JOEYballsGOTTI@reddit
I've heard this specifically about the 300s but no other calibers.
Tempted to get a 5.56 one for idk vibes or something.
Staas@reddit
I got a 5.56 one since I don't have anywhere super long range and I love it. Action was a little rough at first but it's fine after putting some rounds through it and a good cleaning. Getting around .8 MOA consistently with ELD-Ms.
Ragnarok112277@reddit
For budget hunting guns they are alright. I had problems with light strikes on anything harder than a cci400. Cci 450s and mil spec cci 41s would give me light strikes on the gen 1
Howl-at-the-Moon-907@reddit
That’s not what I wanted to hear. This is going to sound crazy, but did you try the lancer 300 specific mags? Rumors are those are supposed to be good for subsonics.
jtsuperduper@reddit
If you're trying to build a 300blk sbr bolt-action, spend a little extra and get the Bergara B-14 stoke.
Ragnarok112277@reddit
Or get a zermatt origin and have a barrel spun up
jtsuperduper@reddit
Maybe if he was chambering for .338 ARC or 8.6 BLK. An origin + pre-fit + chassis/stock is going to easily put you close to $2k
Ragnarok112277@reddit
Yeah. 10 and 20 round versions. Tried different bullets like berrys 220 plated, 190 sub x, 208 eldm. Tried seating the bullets at different lengths.
Even sent them back to ruger and no improvement. Both gen 1 and 2 fed like shit for me.
Didn't have problems with supers using a 147 fmj
Entry-Level-Cowboy@reddit
Mine feeds 110s no issue. Subs are finicky regardless of mags
AlpinistOwen@reddit
I can concur. I have a Gen II in 5.56mm, FTF at least one round per mag. Also super weak ejection. Waiting to get it back from Ruger. Very disappointed.
Ragnarok112277@reddit
One of my most hated guns lol
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
i've never shot either gen, but most people on r/longrange say that the actions have always felt like shit and fed like shit, and ruger didn't fix anything with the gen 2. just added some unnecessary features and upped the price
AldoTheApache3@reddit
I’ve got the gen 2 in 300. It’s one of my favorite guns to shoot. Compared to the gen 1, it feels like a nicer gun in the hand. No issues with subs or supers, very accurate, and overall, really happy with it for the price. Been using it for deer with supers, and varmints with subs during down time.
jtsuperduper@reddit
The barrel fluting. A lot fewer gunsmiths that are willing to chop a fluted barrel down.
Howl-at-the-Moon-907@reddit
Ah ok that actually makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
llama-llama-goose@reddit
Gen1 doesn't look like shit from an ass.
Ready-Landscape6007@reddit
Ruger American Gen 1 has been rebranded as the Glenfield Model A. Cheaper than the Gen 2 if people are interested in a cheaper high quality high caliber option.
Recent-Honey5564@reddit
I love my .308 predator gen 2
I don’t love the price of .308.
Jason1435@reddit
308 is like, the cheapest large caliber cartridge, it can't get cheaper than that in that power 😂
Recent-Honey5564@reddit
Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily affordable haha but yeah relatively not bad.
AllHale07@reddit
Dude I get Federal Premium - Berger Hybrid Hunters for 31.99 at my local shop. I feel like that isn't bad at all
lissyj15@reddit
They look decent, but I think the Tikkas are still probably a better deal.
AllHale07@reddit
That kind of depends what your priorities are. Tikka will likely be more accurate and smoother short throw bolt.
The Ruger has better stock, fluted barrel, threaded barrel, cerakoted for cheaper still.
SwissChzMcGeez@reddit
Link?
TheArmedCivilian@reddit
Aside from fluted barrel being stupid, are these a good buy? Looking to get into 350 legend for certain limited zone hunting
intent107135048@reddit
Wait, why are fluted barrels stupid?
Quenz@reddit
I'm talking out my ass, but I thought fluted barrels were supposed to improve cooling for rapid shooting (less barrel distortion). The price of ammo typically associated with bolt action rifles and the fact they're BOLT ACTION means that you're not going to be shooting fast enough to make a difference.
clicktoseemyfetishes@reddit
On bolt guns it’s for looks and weight but iirc on decent barrels they’ll be stress relieved after fluting so I’d imagine these are not so you may see POI shift as it heats up which only takes 3-5 rounds
Ok_Matter_1774@reddit
But did you consider they look cooler?
Jackson110@reddit
The fluted barrels are mostly for looks, I painted my gen 2 in 308 so it didn’t matter. I’ve hit deer at 170 yards flat and never had any problems. Great rifle for the field and not a safe princess!
username2571@reddit
Maybe I need to send mine back to Ruger. The FTF subs on a 300BLk is so freaking annoying. And yes, have tried different mags.
DUCK_FACE_JONES@reddit
just try to find a gen 1 for cheaper tbh
possibly_lost45@reddit
These in 300bo suppressed is the bees knees.
SpaceCampDropOut@reddit
Anyone know how much these weigh on average? Site doesn’t say.
Ordinary-Machine1451@reddit
When asked, Supreme Overlord Google says, “The Ruger American Gen 2 Standard model typically weighs between 6.2 and 6.5 pounds (approximately 2.8 to 2.95 kg) with an unloaded 20-inch barrel, depending on the specific configuration and finish.”
GroundbreakingLead15@reddit
I think they’re usually about 6.5-7 lb. Could be wrong
