I recently posted about my disillusion with consumer culture, so now I will balance it with a little positive.
I want to hear about thing you purchased that you enjoy- things that may have outperformed your expectations or maybe filled a need you didnt know you had.
I have a couple that came out of left field- never knew they were needs... and i would love ideas from my fellow Xers on things they grew to appreciate.
my 2 unexpectedly solid and extremely valued purchases over the past few years are-
Echo 4010 chainsaw. I moved from a suburban neighborhood to a 13 acre heavily wooded property. hundreds of mature oaks and hickory trees....
but there is also a crap ton of junk trees and invasive growth.
I bought the chainsaw thinking I would have to replace it soon enough given the crazy amount of work it gets.
the thing has run like a top problem free for 6 years, with no sign of slowing down. literally hundreds of hours cutting massive fallen trees and hundreds of junk trees, and it still runs like new. an A+ purchase that exceeded my expectations.
An electric blanket. I have a senior dog that loves to be toasty. He comes up every night and waits for me to lift the covers for him.
A week of single digit temps with forecasts of sub zero temps coming made me decide to try an electric blanket.
I get it, unwrap it, decide to try it, and my life changed.
from night 1, I was so warm and cozy i became addicted.
I never thought I needed one, but after using it I dont want to live without it.
I love the damn thing so much, I began giving them out as gifts.
people look at me like I am a loon when they get them, and within weeks they become converts like me.
so- what are some of your most well used and loved possessions?
PsychologicalLab6637@reddit
I am legit with you on the electric blanket. I got one last fall and have given away 5 since. I sleep so much better with it it's almost unbelievable.
realdlc@reddit
I agree. In my case an electric throw blanket for my recliner. I’m under it right now! lol.
PsychologicalLab6637@reddit
Yep I have one for my couch spot too. They're amazing!!!

The Meile C3 vacuum cleaner! It has vacuumed up the fur of 3 dogs and 4 cats over the last 12 years. This includes 2 extreme shedders. Just not at the same time. What sold me, because the cost hurt, was that the beater bar attachment connected to the handle. Makes vacuuming stairs a breeze. It is a pleasure to vacuum with, which means I vacuum most every day. A shedder and 4 cats makes it necessary.
The Kitchen Aid dishwasher that was top of the line. Lasted 25 years. Ran that machine at least once daily, often twice. If I was baking, 4 times was common. The replacement is also a top of the line Kitchen Aid. She is almost as good as the last one. Hope she stays awhile.
The coffee maker…Something from Germany, I think. It is the simplest appliance we have ever owned. Kind of fascinating. It is used a few times a day.
The coffee grinder. It was purchased with an espresso machine. The grinder gets a ridiculous amount of use.
The Kitchen Aid mixer…work horse.
Last, I will always have a convection oven.
johnonymous1973@reddit
I need to know more about this coffee maker (and maybe the grinder too), please.🙏
AlyceEnchanted@reddit
Technivorm Mochamaster is the coffee maker. It’s made in the Netherlands not Germany.
Baratza Vario is the grinder. Only name on the grinder is Vario.

I have a day pack I carried in high school (Class of ‘87) and I used it until 2018 to carry my wildland fire fighting gear.
Holls867@reddit
I’m just gonna list- A goofy Dog/cat. Good grill/smoker. A used backpack leaf blower, got one that just needed a tuneup and it was good to go. Bird feeder. Used disc golf discs. electric fly swatter. A 2 wheel dolly. Wool socks. Good shoes. Sleep number bed. Native plants. Anything that helps with lowering maintenance or automation, like smart bulbs or digital locks. Electric toothbrush. Waterproof hiking boots. Hole in the wall sandwich spots. Stainless steel cups over plastic cups. House energy audit.

I have had the same Zojirushi rice cooker for 20-30 years (I don't even remember where I bought it). Put rice and water in, depress lever, 30 minutes later (or so) and perfect rice every time. For 20-30 years.
Araneas@reddit
Bought a little two person one. I sue if for so much more than just rice: overnight oats, barley, lentils it's a great little machine and yes the happy song.
filledoux@reddit
YES. The singing when it’s done gets me happy all the time!
Sometimesunaware@reddit
Cuz it's the happy rice song! I put beef broth instead of water, throw in packet of taco seasoning and a can of black beans some nights.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
Oh I too have had my rice cooker for 20+ years. Don't know the brand but it was from costco.
connain@reddit
My rice maker and my crock pot.
Spent decades making rice in a pot. Often comes out fine, once in a while some burnt to the bottom.
The rice maker takes longer but the rice comes out perfect every single time. I just account for the time, start it (or set it start at the appropriate time), takes 1 hour, perfect rice.
Also does steel cut oats. Nice to set the night before and wake up to perfect oatmeal.
Can do a pancake, too. I think I've seen it as a Japanese style pancake. It's only 1 pancake and seems more cake than pancake; big and fluffy. I've split it with the kids before.
I never thought I'd want/need a rice maker but I do not regret the purchase.
I grew up with a crock pot in the house and purchased my own when I had my own place after college. It wasn't anything new, as I grew up with one, but it definitely comes in handy. I usually prefer to make fresh meals on the stove/oven/grill but, once in a while, it's great to have it. Prep in the morning and have a ready meal in the evening. Made a lot of good pot roasts, chilis, chicken and rice, and pulled pork meals.
Change of pace, I like to hike and backpack.
My Sawyer water filter. I've had different packs, different boots/shoes, and used a variety different items but I've always carried a Sawyer water filter. It's also a comfort to know, if we had a serious plumbing issue in my community, I can hit up nearby rivers if I really needed to for emergency water.
Max_Gerber@reddit
+1 for the Sawyer. What make/model is your rice cooker? You had me at “steel oats”.
connain@reddit
It's a Zojirushi 3 cup rice cooker with retractable electric cord. I know people with significantly cheaper models who are happy with them. I didn't know anything about rice cookers when I decided to get one and just looked up things online. Zojirushi was listed as one of the top brands and had good reviews so that was my lead choice. While I knew it was the rice I'd use it for mostly, the fact that it included steel cut oats as an option really helped seal the deal. While quick oats are ok if I'm in a hurry, a good pot of steel cut oats is much better.
Max_Gerber@reddit
Thank you!!!

Breville espresso machine, got it for a song, reg price was 800 bucks. 10 years going on now and haven't needed to replace anything. Regular cleaning is all it has needed.
Baratza Vario grinder, 8 years going on. Only ever need to adjust the burrs. Tons of videos online how to repair these things. Amazing product.
All my Ryobi tools. Say what you want but I have used them for over 17 years now both in construction and home renos and nothing has broken yet. *knock on wood

I'll endorse Echo saws. I grew up around loggers who said "All real saws are orange," and by that they mean Stihl or Husky. But for homeowners Echo is a real value. My Echo, now 15 years old, is smaller than OPs but it has been incredibly reliable. Every year it starts right up without a fuss. It cuts well. It's light. And it was about 50% cheaper than comparable Stihl or Husky saws. I've removed over 150 trees from my suburban property with that saw, a mix of hardwoods and softwoods, and bucked it all for firewood. Other than chains I've had to replace nothing in all those years.
In a similar vein, I am a fan of Bosch power tools, both corded and battery powered. I own at least a dozen, mostly for woodworking and light construction. They are reliable, well designed, rugged, and Bosch's customer support has been excellent over my 25 years as a consumer of their products.
psychoholic@reddit
I've got a Echo CS400 and it starts every time and runs like a champ.
BmanGorilla@reddit
Stihl MS250... best homeowner saw ever made! Unless you're a suburbanite, then it really doesn't matter.
BigJohnsBeenDrinkin@reddit
If you live in FL or the gulf (of Mexico) coast, Honda EU2200 inverter (generator). It sips gas in eco mode and is plenty power to run your essentials (fridge, freezer, lights, internet, chargers, tv) without sucking 10 gallons of gas a day like your neighbor’s 8500 harbor freight genny, plus it’s the size of a carry on bag.
psychoholic@reddit
The Honda generators are fantastic but I do think the modern line of quiet Harbor Freight generators are pretty damned close for about half the price. I've got one of the Predator 5k watt ultra quiet, dual fuel, electric start ones for doing track days and you can barely hear it when it is running outside the trailer. Been dead nuts reliable too.
freebird37179@reddit
One of my cousins had one of those get flooded in storage in his barn. I talked him thru pulling the spark plug, cleaning the carb, draining the oil, etc. Fired on the 5th or 6th crank. Still using it...
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
My Zwilling Henckels chef knife. It’s 20 years old and since I cook everyday, the ROI on that thing is crazy good.
Stray_Wing@reddit
Can’t underestimate the value of an excellent knife. I still have a Chicago Cutlery set I got 30 years ago, but have added key knives from Shun (veggies) and Wusthof for my everyday.
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
The one I have isn’t even that fancy and wasn’t expensive, even by 20yrs ago standards. It’s mid range but solid. I do keep them properly sharpened though. Learned how to use a stone and send them for professional sharpening every 3-4 years.

Celtic159@reddit
Ego Power lawn tools. No 2-stroke premix, no winterizing, no maintenance. Pop the battery into the tool and it just works.
Paid a fortune for a Tempurpedic hybrid mattress and I've never slept better in my life.
DisastrousEngineer63@reddit
I love my Ego weed eater and leaf blower. They are fantastic! And so much easier than my 4 stroke heavy one.
Zealousideal-Smoke29@reddit
I’ve been flirting with the idea of buying a Tempurpedic for years but haven’t because they are SO pricy. I’m glad you like it. I’ll remind myself of your post when I pull out my card at the register when I finally pull the trigger!

deagh@reddit
This was my answer, too, the lawn tools. I have a trimmer and a pole saw that take the same battery and it is awesome.
I also have a lawn pruner that use two hands. It's called a hybrid pruner and it's not as big as the huge loppers for big limbs but they are bigger than the ones you hold in one hand and they have saved my arthritic hands.

Lost my good chainsaw in the divorce.
My #1 buy is an enormous white bookcase I bought in 1995 from a neighbor. It was purpose-made to fit someone’s bedroom wall. It’s just enormous.
At the time, I lived on campus and was a single mom.
I have hauled that bookcase to apartments, dry cabins, the home I shared with my now-ex for two decades, and now to its final resting place: A cabin in the woods.
It will undoubtedly survive me, and I hope my youngest hauls it around with her and keeps it stocked with fantastic reading.

Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner.
Old Vac took a shit the day before Thanksgiving, so I had to buy a new one and this one was only about $50 more than a Hoover. That was 2001 or 2. It's never given me a bit of trouble and it's easy to maintain. Even if all I use it for now is to follow up the cleaning ladies and their crap vaccums.
WeakCalligrapher336@reddit
I've had mine since 2005, best money I have ever spent. Still works like a champ.
Celtic159@reddit
I bought an OG Animal in 1995. That thing is amazing and won't die.

Bought this instead of paying someone else to put in a gravel driveway. Roughly the same cost.
But then I've used it for 1000 more tasks around the property.
Also that F150 behind it has been great. 2015 and besides the usual wear and tear items, I've had to do almost nothing to it.
Zadyria_Gelm@reddit
You always need a good quality, comfortable: bed, shoes, recliner, and computer chair. You'll almost always be in one of them!
kat_storm13@reddit
Skechers step in shoes. I already leaned towards shoes with no laces but still had to bend down to pull up the heel. Between occasional back problems and wanting to have nice fingernails (that aren't even that long,) being able to step in and go is amazing.
Yes, I broke fingernails at least twice pulling on soft shoes. I have a list (in my head) of stupid ways I've broken nails. My biggest nemesis is probably starting to drop something and trying to catch it. Laundry baskets and shopping carts are up there.
eugenesnewdream@reddit
Are these actually comfy? I do have mobility problems and I have tried two brands of step-in shoes so far and they are just not supportive at all.
kat_storm13@reddit
I like mine, but it's hard for me to find any truly comfortable shoes for walking or standing a long time. I like the tennis shoe pair more than the pair that don't look as sporty
eugenesnewdream@reddit
Hmm, maybe I should try them. If nothing else they look a bit cuter (less orthopedic) than the ones I’ve tried.
Zealousideal-Smoke29@reddit
Yooooo! I can’t believe you mentioned these. I just bought a pair for my Dad when he was recovering in the hospital from open heart surgery. They had a 2 for 1 deal so I bought myself the pair that look like skating sneakers. They are LEGIT some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve EVER owned!
LegalEspresso@reddit
A Braun Oral B electric toothbrush. You laugh, but my dentist always comments on how healthy my teeth and gums look.
Like many others have said, a bidet attachment. Doesn't have to be fancy, but once you've used one, you'll feel like a barbarian using a toilet without one.
PapillionGurl@reddit
I love mine too and now I don't know how I lived without it. It helped my sensitive teeth so much

Agree with chainsaw, after spending an hour trying to saw through one of the numerous trees on my new property a few years ago. Went and got a saw and immediately knew it was the right decision.
Although I almost killed myself in front of my wife with it a year later but that’s another story.
Toyota Kluger. Bought new 10 years ago, still drives and looks like new. Zero issues just consumables changed.
Business class flights - our one real excess splurge, becomes the best part of the holiday and we actually look forward to the flight home.
Mid range delonghi coffee machine, wasn’t even that expensive but great coffee every time.
Recently changed to locally roasted coffee, probably x2 what I used to pay but can’t drink anything else now.
Dogs, the best and worst part of being alive. Time with them and when you lose them.

I have a Jura super automatic espresso machine that is the best $2500 morning greeting there is.
A Le Crueset enameled cast iron Dutch oven is worth every dollar. You can cook on a stovetop and in your oven. Sure you could cheap out on another brand, but what makes LC better is the large handles that enable easier handling with pot holders.
If you live in hurricane prone area, a generator is a blessing. Spend the extra money to have an electrician hook it up to your house.

My dual setting heated mattress cover. It was a godsend!! Even though we are up to the high 70s during the day, my poodle and I still use our side at night! Also, a clothes warmer. Cordless Black and Decker drill. $49. Looks like it belongs in a child's toy bin. 25+ years and does everything I'll ever need it to do.
'05 GMC Yukon. 305,000 miles. Runs like a champ and never takes a day off.
Stihl Chainsaw. 2006. Had exactly 2 tuneups, still starts inside of 3 pulls.
Set of J.A. Henckels kitchen knives. I've used that chef's knife almost every single day for 20+ years.
All my cast iron pans. Except for the 'grill' one. That thing will live forever and never find a good use case.
Blue_Henri@reddit
I was about to mention my 2016 4Runner! Loved it since the day it was born. 103k miles, so another 300k or so to go!

I appreciate you mentioning Stihl after all these other posts. Best saws on the market, bar none!
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
I'm going to go a different direction with this, which may be met with disapproval or jeers. I waited for this thing for nearly a half century, through college poverty, low early salaries, raising 2 kids to adulthood, paying for their college, etc, and then once we were debt-free and in good shape, I went and got it, a 2006 911 Carrera. I probably overpaid due to the low miles and excellent condition of this 20-year-old car, but I love the thing and grin like an idiot every time I drive it around the curvy back roads in our county. I do all of my own maintenance (so far, at least), and sometimes I just go out to the garage and sit and look at it. I'm still that 13-year-old boy that saw and admired a 1980 Porsche, at heart. Cheers!
Flat_6_Theory@reddit
I bought the one I wanted as a 13/14 year old. Even with all it’s taken to make it properly road worthy my wife says this is the one car we won’t sell. If I’m gonna die behind the wheel, let it be in this car. This is Slippy Tiefschwarz.

Along the lines of chainsaws, I love my Makita battery powered chainsaw with 16" bar. It can cut through anything. I cut up a fallen tree that was 2' in diameter with it. Yes, it was slightly beyond it's target abilities, but it did it anyway. It starts without fail even if it hasn't been used in a while (unlike the gas powered Stihl it replaced) and with two sets of batteries, it lasts as long as I do. I bought the weed whacker that uses the same batteries, but I don't love it as much.

Zealousideal-Smoke29@reddit
I’m surprised you didn’t go with brands like Nicks or Whites since you are a serious tradesman. Their boots are superior in almost every way to the mass produced brands. Hand made and fully rebuildable. They are pricy, but buy once, cry once!

My heated bidet seat. Nice warm seat on winter days, nice warm water flushing to clean up and prevent any skid marks. No more multiple wipes.
When my wife questioned my decision to buy a bidet, I responded “If you got poo anywhere else on your body, would you wipe it with just toilet paper, or at least use a water?”
She is now a huge fan. I’m so attached that I bought a travel bidet that I shamelessly use in public toilets stalls. Having a clean tushy is so underrated, and colonoscopy prep is top notch.

haha I had the very same conversation, and a similar example. I haven't gone heated yet, but bidet in general is a massive life upgrade from such a simple thing.

Toro push mower and Stihl weed wacker. My husband said for years we didn’t need to spend what they cost. Finally, about 20 years ago he handed me the keys to his truck and told me to go buy whatever mower I thought was best. Not long after that he took me back to the hardware store, stood me in front t of the weed walkers and said “i don’t care what it is, I don’t care how much it costs, but if it’ll shut you up pick what you want”. He haven’t regretted my choices.

A 16-300mm Tamron zoom lens. In the summers, I shoot at our local renaissance faire and up till 2016, I had to switch lenses between the 18-55 and the 55-200 when going from taking photos of things like the joust, to taking photos of people. And the faire is notoriously dusty. I hated changing lenses there. Now I don't have to.

My fogless shaving mirror in the shower. Just fill the back with water from the shower and you’re all set. Hung at the right height. It’s awesome. No more bending over the bathroom counter, which is why I started shaving every other day or so a few years back. Excellent find from my wife to cure scratchy kisses.

Lol- I dont have one, but i sure need one. I do a "rough shave" in the shower and then clean up what I miss in the sink afterwards.
...and because I dont enjoy it to say the least, it is far to infrequent.

Our 15 year old one started overheating pretty badly this winter. I did a bit of research, and for $8 got proper grease and a replacement gasket. It took about half an hour to disassemble the drive, remove the old black grease, clean, regrease, and reassemble the thing. Works like a charm again.

5 ft x 8 ft utility trailer. I have .38 acres on the East coast, covered in oak, hickory, poplar, etc. I mulch some of the leaves, but the volume is just too much, so I haul several loads off to the brush pile at the recycling center every year. I demolished my old deck a couple years back to build a new one, and hauled the scrap off in it. I also have a stand of bamboo that keeps creeping onto my property from neighboring properties, so I haul some of that off every year. I've hauled topsoil, gravel, mulch, lumber, plywood, drywall, bags of concrete, appliances, riding lawnmower, etc with it. The neighbors occasionally borrow it, which helps keep up good will in the neighborhood 😉. I paid about $1k for it 15 years ago. Maintenance costs are pretty minimal. I put some plywood walls on it, replaced the tires, added a spare tire and a jack, installed some hub caps with grease fittings, and just installed new LED tail lights on it.

Air fryer. It was actually a Christmas gift from a friend. It's not something I would've bought for myself. I use it at least once a week.

My first wife got me a beer bottle opener ring. The marriage didn't last, but I'm still wearing the ring nearly 20 years later, and using it.
Heated blankets are nice, no argument here, but the heated mattress pad was a real game-changer for me. Dual-zone, shuts off after a while, and as long as you're not spilling enough liquid to soak through your sheets, your bed can literally be pre-warmed for you.
Bidet. Absolute game-changer. Will always have one going forward in my home.
If you have trees that drop leaves in the fall, get a leaf blower. It can be a plug-in, or battery-powered; doesn't have to be gas-powered. The leaf-blower is head-and-shoulders better than raking wet, heavy leaves. The leaf blower my dad got me is easily one of the top three Christmas gifts I've received as an adult. (Castle Grayskull holds the #1 spot for all-time, all-age categories, but the leaf blower is right up there)
OXO makes a can opener that operates by breaking the seal on the side of the lid instead of cutting through the top. No sharp edges, easy to reset the lid on the can in the fridge, and most OXO kitchen gadgets have good grips. I'm not disabled or struggling with grip strength now, but on a long enough time scale, we all have to think about disability and accessibility.

Fast fashion can be basically garbage, but about ten years ago I was surprised to see a sturdy looking parka at Old Navy. The price tag was steep ($200)- but it was not junk- beefy zipper, quilted lining, heavy weight waterproof shell, long, heavy. Still looks brand new even though I don it every winter. I've purchased Old Navy stuff that turned to shit pretty fast, but not this beast.

What is the brand of blanket? Mine seem to conk out after a little while. I need a better brand.
jenorama_CA@reddit
It’s not a blanket, but a Chilipad. It’s a mattress pad that circulates water set to a specific temperature via a bedside dock. No more night sweats or freezing cold nights.

I love electric blankets, but mine always seem to stop working after awhile. I think I need a better one? Also, for me I have a reliable and working vehicle. I dont have public transport where I live and have dealt with years of shitty cars. Now I am financially able to have a working care I can depend on. Not a fancy one, but it is reliable. This is gold.

Similarly, I'll give props to my Husquvarna chainsaw that my wife gave me as a gift about 20 years ago after we bought a 2 acre wooded lot that needed cleared to build our house. Still runs great today and I absolutely love when I get to use it.
Along a similar vein, my Milwaukee M18 powered leaf blower. After years of gas powered and corded leaf blowers, batter powered is so nice. (Just need to be constantly charging multiple batteries.)

I was going to say my wife but I did NOT purchase her.
I have rented a skid steer for a few years now once a summer. This year I am going to buy one. I think that will be worth the money once I have my own. Other than that I really can't think of anything recently that has made a big impact. Maybe the 8' tall ladder. Made it much safer to hang Christmas lights this year. My wife didn't have 91 dialed into the phone already.
Secret-Function-2972@reddit
I'd really like a small tractor with a bucket. So many uses.
I have a 22' extension ladder for putting up Christmas lights. That said I prefer to just get on the roof for some of them. 8 pitch roof is getting steep at my age.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I have the tractor and bucket. Wife refuses to lift me up in it. She worries to much. I am tall so with the 8' ladder there is still two steps more I could go if I needed to go higher. Getting on the roof isn't an option for me either. Steep and usually covered in snow before I put the lights up.
Grazmahatchi@reddit (OP)

seconded on a dual zone heated blanket. Wife and I got one this winter. I'm usually a very cold sleeper. I love those cold sheets on my feet when I get in on the summer.. I now LOOOOOVE my heated blanket for the cold. We've had many heated blanket, but dual zone is king.
Wolfbox vehicle "dashcam" Except this one can either go on top of your oem mirror with rubber bands, or with a proper bracket (optional) from the same company, it can completely replace the OEM mirror. I went this route. the entire mirror works perfectly, and when you turn on the display to view live recording, every bit of that mirror is a large screen. its a game changer. It has a built in front facing camera, and a rear usb camera that you can place anywhere. When both towing for camping our smaller gear trailer, and the back of our SUV is packed to the top.. nothing blocks the rear camera that I placed just inside the window.
I can explain it to folks, they see it online, and think that seems pretty cool. Then I just happen to have them over, don't think of it any longer, or it could have been months/years and I offer to drive, they're gobsmacked at how cool that is, and order their own.
Wolfbox G850 Pro + Wolfbox OEM bracket for usb C (my model cam + Polarizer made from another company... nice for cutting through the windows of oncoming cars. eliminates 100% glare.

a minifridge with no condenser, just a Peltier junction. In a 68F room it'll get to freezing. Flip the button, and it blows the warm air in and cold air out, and it turns into a little heater to warm up sandwiches or keep drinks warm at about 110F. They won't get HOT but they'll be kept comfortably warm. AND it plugs into a car, too. They're only abut $30 and while they tend to break after a year (which kills me. The parts are essentially a fan and a T-tube..... HOW?) it's still worth the cost. I give them out as baby shower gifts, I keep one with me at work, I have a car one for long trips, and so far, everyone has loved them. I initially just got it to keep the drinks cold at work, but now, these are used a LOT.
There are several brands. Mostly there's only three, just rebadged and with different handles. https://www.amazon.com/CROWNFUL-Portable-Personal-Cosmetics-Bedroom/dp/B087Z2MLN2
