UK women, how are we supposed to dress for festivals once we aren’t in our twenties?

Help a girl out. More alternative leaning but completely at a loss as to how to dress for festivals now I’m on my mid thirties. It’s hot and I want to dance, but I want a fun/ cool festival fit!
geeered@reddit
However the hell you want!
Including the same way as you did in your 20s if you want.
Or some random outdoor wear if you want.
Or a cocktail dress if you want.
positivelittlecorner@reddit (OP)
I live in jeans and t shirt normally and feel like I forgot how to dress for dancing/festivals and don’t know how to incorporate my style/ self into my outfits. My style is definitely not the same as it was in my twenties so just a bit lost for direction!
geeered@reddit
Jeans and t-shirts are totally fine too - you'll see plenty in exactly that. Including me enough times - I am a guy, however. But I know plenty of women of all ages who go to festivals - some in their 50s and beyond that get dressed up in light up sparkly wings. Some in their 20s that go for the most practical clothing possible and a chair.
A festival is one place you are much less likely to be judged, so it really is anything you might feel like.
You could start by seeing if the festival has a theme - plenty of festivals have a specific theme for the weekend.
Also of course type of festival - say Download vs Shambala vs a city day festival are all going to have people generally aiming for a different feel.

Lucy and yak dungarees, hoodie, crocs/wellies/walking boots. Possibly a hat.
Party-Werewolf-4888@reddit
No dungarees or jumpsuits at a festival, on account of them being a nightmare to get on and off in a portaloo and a constant risk of trailing the pissy floor.
RhubarbImmediate7007@reddit
That’s a lived experience that all Must experience at least once I fear

You dress like you are in your thirtya

As a festival goer now in my early 40s... I still wear colourful nonsense just like in my 20s, only this time it's warmer for the evenings, more comfortable and usually has pockets.
For daytime stuff I see plenty of women in Lucy & Yak stuff, but personally I prefer to find dresses in weird and colourful prints with pockets (then add a bum bag). Pro-tip is you can make anything festival-fun if you add some weird embellishments. So a sequin or fringed mini-cape over jeans + a tshirt, a shiny colourful hat, spiked or fringed epaulets, cool harnesses or braces. Raid your local (or online) haberdashery and go crazy with a glue gun. Lean into the accessories - there's loads of stuff online if you're willing to pay, or else take the opportunity to start a new crafty hobby (I scour charity shops all year round for unusual prints/colours/sequins and then mix all the various stuff up into weird and cool outfits). Glue guns are cheap - have fun!

I feel like this is much more useful advice than 6,000 people going "Wear whatever you want!"
EmphasisPurple5103@reddit
Being flippant.... however you damn want.
DependentRounders934@reddit
Not really advice though
EmphasisPurple5103@reddit
I mean, it is.
If you want to wear vans or boots or heels, wear em. If you want to wear a skirt, a dress, shorts or jeans, wear em.
If you want to rock up with a frog hat, definitely wear it.
DependentRounders934@reddit
I guess thats all the advice in the world, what job should i get? What perfume should i buy? what colour should i paint my walls? What food should i eat? The answer to all questions is whatever you want

Came here to say to this

Correct answer
Milam1996@reddit
Alt people in my experience dress the exact same whether they’re 14 or 70. Fishnet tights, a tiny skirt, doc martens and then a top of some description.
positivelittlecorner@reddit (OP)
Fishnets, skirt and docs is likely winning out!!!!!
Over-Language2599@reddit
Well I don't usually dress like that, even at festivals. Although I don't suppose anyone would care.
Milam1996@reddit
My experience of festival clothing is that people only care what you’re wearing if you’re boring. People will judge you a lot less for wearing a carnival bikini with a feather boa than they would you for wearing jeans and a hoody.
Chinablue_@reddit
I've totally worn jeans and a hoody in the evening. DGAF if people think that is boring either, that sounds like someone else's problem, not mine :)
vipros42@reddit
My experience is that no one gives a shit.
Iforgotmypassword126@reddit
Long /midi skirt. Get the length mid way up the calf so it doesn’t get soaked in mud.
& light weight rain coat
Hair in two buns
positivelittlecorner@reddit (OP)
Good shout on midi! I think I’ll start the hunt for one!
Chinablue_@reddit
I usually wear some sort of baggy/flowy/split leg trousers, colourful t shirts and glitter on my face, big earrings/glasses etc. I have always worn trainers and always will, but hats off to those who go for anything else. (wellies ofc if need be). A windbreaker jacket thing packs up small and offers enough in summer at least.
Rockin-Robin66@reddit
Anyway you want.
Environmental-Cut779@reddit
Like what every you feel good in tbh
TemporaryLucky3637@reddit
If you’re wanting alternative the brand Disturbia has “grown up” alt clothes.
WowThisIsAwkward_@reddit
Wear what you want. I’m in my early twenties and have seen people of different ages rock various styles. I don't understand the need to restrict yourself over this arbitrary window of youth. Life is too short to care.
Remote-Pool7787@reddit
However you like. I’m more a calf length dress and trainers sort of girl but plenty of my friends wear short shorts
dopeyroo@reddit
As everyone else says, however you bloody well want. Full glam in a sequin body suit and face paint? Go for it! Dress for comfort in shorts, t-shirt and walking boots? Absolutely!
Personally I don't do anything all in one simply because I don't fancy getting naked in the toilets (and risking dropping my clothes on the floor), but basically anything goes.
DisloyalMouse@reddit
Especially as they’re almost always portaloos. I want to take as little of my clothes off in one of them lol
kpnutsz@reddit
Anything that you thinks looks cool but is comfy. My style hasn't changed too much since getting older (although you won't catch me putting fairy lights in a mohawk again anytime soon) but I now prioritise 1) easy accessibility for pissing reasons (aint got the time for a complicated process here) and 2) nothing digging in too much/can last the whole day without wanting to change.
dragon8733@reddit
How do you want to dress.. last festival, that i attended, last year, I wore denim shorts; turtle neck, long sleeve t shirt: fishnets and thigh high docs. I was 38 at the time, just enjoy yourself!
ItsNotAboutThe-Pasta@reddit
Just be comfortable otherwise it will ruin your enjoyment. I'm going to a festival in August and the sun is my worst enemy so if it ends up being hot I will just be wearing a long sundress that covers my shoulders and probably sliders.
Styxal@reddit
honestly i think there's enough variation in appearance that most people would find it hard to tell when a woman is in her 30s
you should just dress how you want
filbert94@reddit
Christ just wear what you want. Everyone looks like shit by the end of the first day. It's 10,000 people pissing about in a muddy field. Hardly haute couture.
geekroick@reddit
In all honesty what do you think is going to happen? A security guard is going to check your ID and send you home if they deem you to be dressed inappropriately for your age?
Just go. Wear whatever you want, no one cares.
TheNorbster@reddit
Long skirt! So handy for a ninja wee as the loos get rotten, and you can layer for warmth underneath. I like a sleeveless body warmer in the evenings, again for warmth.
As for day clothes? Whatever you want.
DisloyalMouse@reddit
Girl, why can’t you wear what you wore in your 20s? If it’s what you like and want to wear…wear it!
_DG____@reddit
Flirty mini skirt, wellies, tank top, desert scarf, sunnies. SUNSCREEN!
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Weather dependent, I usually wear baggy tshirts and shorts/comfy jeans and sketchers or crocs and add glitter and other accessories
llamasncheese@reddit
Not a woman, youre still getting my opinion. Dress however the hell you want and feel comfortable with. If you really dont feel like dressing the same as you did in your 20s, if its a thing of covering up a bit more the hippy festival look is a vibe. Those baggy stripped trousers that could almost be pyjamas and a tie dye t shirt or a "drug rug" jumper, round sunglasses and maybe a headscarf. Still feels as light as what you maybe wore in your 20s too.
Organic-Path-8961@reddit
Prioritize comfort for sure. If you are going to a UK festival, definitely pack for all kinds of weather! ☂️⛱️😎👢👟☀️☃️
RunningCrow_@reddit
However you please! The beauty of festivals is wearing what you want without judgement.
ThrowRAkitty13@reddit
However the fuck you like
LaidBackLeopard@reddit
If ever there was a place where you can dress however you like, it's a festival. I've seen all kinds of weird and wonderful :-)
