Is owning 3 cars too much?
Posted by Usual-Temperature750@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 297 comments
I'm 30y not married i like cars and motorcycles.
i currently own a 2020 Civic LX CVT (DD)and a 2014 Grand Vitara 5Speed M(Camping Car). but I've been thinking of getting a 3rd car the suspects are a 2016 Accord V6 Touring Coupe 6AT or 2014 Abarth 500 5speed M both have less than 60k miles both are cars o would like to own one day. I'm on the fence if 3 Is too much lol.
StickyV@reddit
This really depends on the caliber of car. I have a 23 RS7 and just got a new 26 Escalade. I think that 3 of these types of cars is excessive but if you're going used then go for it, enjoy life man!
grumpy0282@reddit
i have 3
i want more ,,, unfortunately i dont have the space
why dont you ask jay leno ,,, i think he has a few
jrileyy229@reddit
If you're going to buy an accord, you sell the Civic... It no longer has a purpose. Yes the civic gets better MPG than the Accord, but you can't possibly drive enough to save enough at the pump to offset basic ownership costs of the civic, primarily depreciation.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
That's the thing i would keep the Civic bc it's the newest and has like 36k miles. i have to travel a lot for work and the civics mpg and range Is optimal rn a full rank is 35bucks. Using the GV for the commute would be bankrupcy lol full tank Is like 55 or 60 bucks and gets like 250 miles on a tank HAHAHAHAHA. Accord or Abarth would be like weekend toy cars
Not-An-FBI@reddit
I think it's pretty insane to own 3 newish cars and not have an EV if you drive a lot.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
No hybrids or EV lol my country doesn't have EV infrastructure if u go far from the capital plus we only have BYD ev's and the have a range of 300kms and i do 160kms one way to the city plus going to malls seeing friends coming black to work all that driving Fri to Mon amounts to 545kms in one tank of gas on the Civic that's 35bucks currently lol.
Not-An-FBI@reddit
That sucks that your country doesn't have electricity.
eldredo_M@reddit
EV, EV, EV, EV 😄
eldredo_M@reddit
Never thought of an Accord as a weekend fun car candidate…🤔 Interesting.
Bomberr17@reddit
Ikr LOL if I was OP looking for a third vehicle, I want a way different experience, maybe like a Miata.
joedimer@reddit
What’s with fucking Miatas on every post in this sub lol. Nothing cooler than having your own vision for an unpopular car imo
jrileyy229@reddit
You know, you really can't understand it until you track them... Cars that are heralded as amazingly well balanced and poised cars, usually are. Miata, first gen boxster S, elise... They might not turn the faster lap times than the Corvette but there's a certain thing about them.
joedimer@reddit
I really don’t doubt that, it’s just repetitive seeing that suggestion all the time. “Why even bother getting that car you might’ve been dreaming about for years, just get a Miata” got old
Bomberr17@reddit
Idk man. I haven't heard of anyone dreaming for an Accord 🤷🏻♂️
jrileyy229@reddit
Right... So if you want an open top, cheap weekend car... There's why the Miata always comes up.... It's truly a great car.
For under 10k you can get a car that gives you a smile with an open top and doesn't depreciate
joedimer@reddit
I mean sure if asking for general advice, but when someone says “i want to get car A” and they’re told “just get a Miata” it’s a lame suggestion
jrileyy229@reddit
Oh, well that's fair. I didn't say that, but clearly someone did and I agree with you... If someone posts about option A or option B, disregarding that and just saying Miata is annoying
joedimer@reddit
Ya that’s what I was getting at at first lol my bad
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
V6 are kinda fun tho almost 300hp
Aggressive_Guest1758@reddit
Id get that, but with a manual. I got a 9th Gen Civic si with 200ish horsepower. I love zipping around in that thing.
00JustKeepSwimming00@reddit
You would pay more in insurance that what you save in gas.
garcia38@reddit
Wouldnt you need to insure 3 cars and lose whatever you'd save in gas to insurance?
Hersbird@reddit
I had an independent insurance agent I could switch my policy to and from the cars I was actually driving at will. I had like 6 cars at the time, all running and driving but only needed 3 at any given time. So winter I would cover the beater, summer my old Barracuda, the minivan was always covered, and my daughter sometimes had the Grand Cherokee, sometimes the Saturn. Then we had a older pickup we might insure occasionally when needed.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
Insurance Is optional here i only pay it for the Civic bc it's my daily and registration Is cheap bc they are 5 plus yearold cars that anual cost Is 29 per car
UnUsernameRandom@reddit
Yeah, with the money you get on the Civic you can afford quite a few years worth of fuel. Makes absolutely no sense from a financial perspective.
Turduncle@reddit
As I said I my comment, you need to consolidate your camper and DD. With hybrids and Plug in, you can get very good mileage crossovers that can handle both. Who cares if civic is newest? It will have the highest trade in value then. It costs time and money to keep extra cars on the road. Did you factor that into your fuel savings?
jrileyy229@reddit
The GV isn't part of the discussion.
If you drive 2000 miles a month, at $7 a gallon, the difference between the civic and the Accord is going to be around $100... That's $1200 a year. Thats about the depreciation rate of a civic, and doesn't account for any other costs like registration, insurance, oil changes, etc etc.
I understand what you're saying about a weekend car... My point is the accord being both your daily and your weekend car makes far more sense in basically every facet.
The abarth is a different story, that is not a car you want to daily for 20k+ miles a year
IWantToBeWoodworking@reddit
If the cost in gas difference would be bankruptcy then I am changing my opinion that owning 3 cars is too much.
stomper4x4@reddit
Nope

I buyed two cars and i hased in same problems with km hah after I check vin in cheapcarfax.co saw that for 10$ 2 reports

If you can afford it, and you have room for them, why not? Who cares what other people think
Tasty_Cod_7354@reddit
You can't maintain and take care of that many cars, don't care what anyone says. Speaking from experience.
OldeWorldWays@reddit
I have 5 plus a non car that gets me in more trouble than any car!
Unlucky_Employee6082@reddit
That’s the key. I don’t care how you spend your money, but don’t leave your slowly rusting “investments” all over block with expired stickers
deconstruct110@reddit
Room for the cars is key. Imho classic and nice cars should be garaged.
taidizzle@reddit
The bottleneck is where to park it all
Historical-Bite-8606@reddit
I have 5 😭. But have teen drivers, so everyone has their own, but I have two. At least all paid with cash. Registration and insurance in my state is killer. Im about $4k a year in registration (the Hummer EV is 40% of that) and $6k a year in insurance (full coverage and $1k deductible).
Not_an_okama@reddit
Man im paying almost $3k to insure a single car. Hopefully it comes down next renewal because ill have an accident fall off my record. Love that a highschooler running a red light and crunching my front corner has literally cost me thousands beyond my deductable to get it repaired in the first place.

Exactly. I have my old pickup truck, my SO's car, and whatever other car I happen to enjoy at the time. Right now it's an old Crown Vic. Who knows what it'll be when I'm ready to replace it? Evo, Si, Mustang, idk. We have the room and the budget, so it's not a big deal
sharpshooter999@reddit
We have 5 also, but that's because hang on to vehicles so long they aren't even worth to trade in. We farm, and it's always hand to have an extra vehicle. My wife's old work car is a Ford Escape with 290k miles, a shot suspension and some engine and transmission leaks. The suspension alone costs more to fix than what the car is worth. It's still good enough to drive around and check fields or zip a few miles into town to grab some groceries quick. If it dies on the road someday, I'll just scrap it
abstractraj@reddit
My wife and I share one Porsche Cayenne. But admittedly at some point we will get a 911 to supplement that. So get what you want as long as it’s within your means
RoppFTW@reddit
I'd say the issue here isn't the quantity of the cars, it's the quality. You're choosing 3 cars instead of 1 good car.
One_More_Pin@reddit
3! Those are rookie numbers son!
Hahaha. But in reality if you enjoy them, they serve a purpose, you can afford them, .... then who cares go wild!
I had 6 personal + 1 company truck at one point so I might have a bias.
Mundane-Exercise6333@reddit
I’m at 5 cars that I switch between driving, 3 motorcycles, and a boat and I’m 42yo so you’re on the right path 👍🏼
Difficult_Roll8005@reddit
I have 4 cars what’s the problem with 3?
ExcitingTurn2886@reddit
It's your money, but that seems like an unusual, and somewhat redundant, lineup of cars. I own quite a few cars but they don't overlap as much. E.g., sports cars, SUVs, different locations, etc ,
Unless you have someone who works for you to take care of the cars, it can be a hassle. Even if you don't drive them much, you need to keep up with registrations, maintenance, insurance....
I personally would try to consolidate, or buy something much different.
musa_velutina@reddit
Depends how big your dick is
Unique_Watch4072@reddit
Depends on how you use them, I have way more, but they rarely get used, they're more of collectables than anything else and I like to keep them around as they are part of history. On top of that I mostly walk or cycle most of the time unless I'm driving my work van, for work.
Naught2day@reddit
No, I do only have three motorcycles but I am the only one that rides. We have five cars, the most I have had is nine. Nine is was too many for me.
Old_Cars@reddit
I owned 17 vehicles at one time once granted only 3 actually ran the others were for parts
HotRodHomebody@reddit
my wife and I each have two vehicles. I’m yearning for something else myself. Among your choices, I think fiats are pretty junky, but get yourself that Honda accord touring, you will dig that thing.
dmv1985@reddit
I have 5 and three of them are 1973 and older. I have a 53, 62 and a 73. wife has a car and I have a truck. plus a side by side
soooo. no, 3 is quite reasonable
senpaiofnone@reddit
I don't think owning THOSE three cars is bad. It's not like you own 8 Jeeps and no other cars.
QuickCharisma15@reddit
There’s a house I drive by near my job that has 6 TJ Wranglers and one or two JK Wranglers. I have no clue if any of them run

Fun_Neighborhood9232@reddit
My jeep is in the shop right now, but I have a super reliable old sedan to use so I'm not worried 😇
Lonely_Apartment_644@reddit
You need 8 jeeps cause only one may be running at any given time
KetamineGod420@reddit
Too optimistic
Hersbird@reddit
I bought my Wrangler from a guy with 9 Wranglers or CJs. He was selling his newest one, a 2007 2 door, and as many of the older Jeeps necessary so his wife could get a 4 door Wrangler as they now had a baby. I think those were the only vehicles they had.
LolBoyLuke@reddit
I will own 17 Trabants someday, even if it's the last thing I do.
Forker1942@reddit
Oh god I know a guy that just owns old jeeps and VWs. He preaches the virtues of not having a car payment. Constantly had to scour junk yard for parts. Finds rare parts for later breakdowns, so he need a storage unit at $500 a month.
gotcha640@reddit
What does the Civic do that the two new options don’t?
Sell Civic, buy the Fiat (the Accord is fine, but basically just a slightly bigger faster Civic), keep the Grand Vitara for when the Fiat needs work.
Then when you’re tired of the Fiat, sell that and get the next thing that tickles your fancy.
Longjumping_Cable_20@reddit
If you have the space for them, the money to afford and maintain, or the skills and tools to maintain, have however many you want! Married 24M myself, I/we have 4. 88 Ranger v6 2wd 5mt, 08 Eclipse GS, 12 CRV EXL AWD, and 13 Si sedan. I'm currently looking for #5 or to add a bike😂 Wallet is the limit!
Auqakid07@reddit
Do you have motorcycles as well? 3 cars is still reasonable if you are into cars. It also matters if you can afford and have a place to store them. So if all that checks then 3 is good. Now onto the cars.
The accord and your current civic both fall into the same Daily Driver category for me. I would suggest getting a "fun" car for your 3rd car. The 500 fits more into the "fun" category. I think you should expand your search and look at some more vehicles.
ConversationEasy7134@reddit
I have a 2015 Highlander. 2015 is250 because the Highlander needs some fixing. Then a 2001 Audi tt convertible for the lolz. I’m 42. Had my fun tho should sell them all and replace with a rav4. 2020. Non hybrid
Electrical-tentacle@reddit
I mean I have had 4 vehicles a motorcycle and a boat at one time. For me living in Canada, it’s the insurance costs and maintenance costs that determine how many vehicles I own at one time.
Once I had kids I got rid of my 1955 Chevy truck because it was a Sunday driver and took up my garage space. I have recently got rid of my boat as well. Between annual maintenance and insurance costs, I couldn’t justify it.. once my kids are older I’ll get another one.
So there is no “one size fits all” for the right amount of vehicles is. If it’s your passion and hobby. Enjoy yourself.
N043@reddit
Not at all. I currently own 5 of them. If you can afford it and they all serve a purpose for you. Have at it.
Evee862@reddit
I have 4. My GTO which is rarely ever driven. My truck which sits on the driveway unless I need it for truck things then my wife and I each have our go to work cars

Lower-Aside1924@reddit
Fuck what anyone has to say, you do you bro. Just don’t insure them all at the same time or at minimum put the ones you aren’t driving on “storage”. I’m 26 with my own house and I have 5 cars rn. Actually 4 trucks and a corvette but you catch my drift.
Radiant-Triumph@reddit
3 cars makes perfect sense, I usually own at least 3. The 3 you're considering seem more redundant than I'd want, but it's your money so buy what you like.
I prefer a fun economical car (current 2020 Accord Touring 2.0t), an older 4x4 truck (current '05 Ranger), and a RWD manual transmission sports car (recently sold '06 Corvette, currently shopping a replacement). I also always own at least one bike, that sees most of my nice weather commuter miles.
Since I now have a family I added a Honda Odyssey for family hauling duty, and the lady has her personal economical car. We recently had 6 cars between the 2 of us, but as a couple were redundant we traded one on the Odyssey and sold another.
prairie-man@reddit
8 vehicles here. 6 vintage bimmers and two old Chevy pickup trucks.

3 non running shitboxes that won’t have any progress for decades- too much.

__slamallama__@reddit
I think these are three monumentally reasonable cars, so no.
That said both of your other ones are such solid ones I gotta say, do the abarth (or keep shopping..) most of the v6 Hondas are honestly pretty disappointing to drive IMO. 500 abarth is a riot though.
For better or worse, the right third car for you is the same as the right third car for everyone else. The nicest Miata you can find in your budget. No less useful than the 500, at least as much fun to drive, and wildly more reliable. AND convertible!
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
Yeah Abarth and MX5 are strong contenders my problem Is that i focus a lot on reliability.
Abarth is a sentimental car sound GREAT a neighbor had one and i loved the sound and looks. this one goes for 6 or 7k
Mx5 Is realiable and drives great the only worry i have Is soft top on winter bc we get HEAVY RAIN here. prices for them go a little high in my country ie a 2012 goes for 10k give or take.
__slamallama__@reddit
Oh man ok fair. I was going to say an NC PRHT would solve it but that's a big premium.
That said if you care about reliability, I can promise you will hate that abarth. 500s are woefully unreliable in catastrophic ways but like all Fiats... They find their ways to go wrong. Even worse they'll go wrong intermittently which is infuriating. At least when your car does something wrong consistently you can figure it out and fix it.
What market are you in? Do you have Ford fiestas?
bqtchef@reddit
I have 3, and just purchased a 4th as a project truck. Once I complete it I'll be looking for a 5th vehicle

QLC459@reddit
3 cars isn't a problem. 3 boring commuters is pretty silly though.
At least commit to something fun if you are going to have two extra cars lmao.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
Civic Is the DD
Vitara Is the camping rig. Has an awning, rooftoptent installed a snorkel a couple weeks a go and I'm about to install a lift kit.
'16 V6 coupes kinda rip they are not slow at all and 280hp Is decent. At least in my country they are not common. This go for 7 o 8k
Abarth is a fire cracker could be a fun little car only problem i see Is sorting parts lol. 160hp on that little hamster sounds great lol. 6 or 7k
Mx5's had an 02' that i flipped and i would love to own another one but they go for high prices here and it's a little out of my budget ie a 2012 mx5 sells for 10k.
But lets see what happens lol

Last summer, I was at 6. Right now I'm at 4, but about to add another. In my defense, V1 & V2 are owned by my business. I drive one, wife drives the other. V3 is my truck/weekend vehicle. V4 is shared between my 22 yr old & 16 yr old. Soon to be V5 will be driven by my 16yr old when 22 yr old takes V4 this summer (they are graduating college next month and need a car). I'm in the US.

3 cars i think is a bit of a luxury but as long as ya have room to store them and they fill different roles I dont think ya should stress too much.
Adventurous-Bit-5939@reddit
Three is the minimum I need at home for myself and wife and two kids, four would be better. They are like any other tool, the more specialized you can acquire to serve a specific purpose the better off on all of them...
Rich260z@reddit
I own 3 and a motorcycle.
1 is a project and hasn't ran for several years. 1 is a track project that pretty much only goes to the track and back. The last is a 20yr old Honda crv that gets me to work when the weather is too bad for my bike.
noladutch@reddit
Nope not a problem.
If you can afford it you could have worse habits besides junk dropping the final amount in value.
I tend to have project cars and one daily. So only have one maybe two at a time insured.
Right now on a 57-60 f100 kick. So I have four. A daily 96 f150 300 six manual.
And a 57 and two other 60 f100s in different states of build. I don't count the totaled mustang that is a parts car for one of them and one 60 is in essence a parts car.
So if I count the parts car five. If I count what I expect to drive one day three.
ozpinoy@reddit
It depends. I had 4 at one point. I also have 3 kids - starting out.
Now, I have 2x. Only because onf othe cars one of the kids used to drive, sat there collecting dust and claiming it's dead. So I use it as my daily car. 4.5k car and reliable.
My other car 36k car is my weekend car. I mean, I should just sell it. But the idea of always in the move interests me. So I have a spare car. Coincidentally, my niece wrote off her car. So shes using her grandmas car and her grandparents (my parents) using my goold "high tech" car. High tech because it has your new normal kind of car with bells and whistles. Unlike the car that I drive. everything like the old days.

JinTay1993@reddit
Haven't had it for all too long. So I don't know. Hopefully good. Lol. Haven't had any issues in the past 1000 ish miles.
It really does seem like it's just a matter of the maintenance history it has had. Those multi air engines really do better longevity wise if the oil changes have been done on time, at least according to other owners when I did my research.
But the engine bay is cramped af, so just be ready to disassemble things to get access to the simplest things, like the oil filter. Lol.
I haven't driven my SQ5 in a month since I got the Abarth cause it's so much fun. So just figured I'd share my experience.
blur911sc@reddit
Do whatever you want, but insurance and upkeep adds up.
Also, if you leave cars sit and not driven, they have to be stored properly or they'll have real issues. Gotta deal with dead batteries, storage, mice, clunky flat-spotted tires, old gas, etc. It's really best if they're driven regularly.
I'm currently trying to sell off vehicles I don't use enough. Want to buy a motorhome? How about a GPZ900R? Jaguar XJ6? Audi Q7?

I'd have to really step back and think hard about which ones I'd have to sell to get down to 3.
Can't sell the fullsize truck without selling the camper too. Hate to sell my crown Vic, it's such a wonderful car. Miata is way too much fun to drive, hate to sell it. Don't really want to get rid of my old jeep, kind of nice for cruising backroads and stuff. My ranger is a nice backup truck and good for hauling little things. My fiesta could go, but it gets like 38mpg and is a great daily driver. I suppose my other fiesta parts car could go with it.
AboutTheArthur@reddit
All I'll say is that my 500 Abarth was one of my favorite cars I've ever had. Absolutely a go-cart that was remarkably practical. Most smiles-per-mile out there. Only downside is the interior build quality definitely is economy and cheap.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
How was reliability on ur Abarth that's what worries me. Weekend use and ocasional use for work tbh
King_Hawking@reddit
I also had an abarth and it was incredibly fun and reliable for me. It was my daily driver, made it through many brutal Michigan winters, and I wasn’t gentle with it. Never really had any problems. I would HIGHLY suggest it.
Usual-Temperature750@reddit (OP)
I've been reading a lot about them and the issues are More like interior things going bad or CV axles aparte from that no complaints on engine and turbos
AboutTheArthur@reddit
Mechanical reliability is fine as far as I'm aware. I had the 500 Abarth from like 25k miles to 50k miles. Also had a FIat 124 Abarth (same engine) from like 20k miles up through 45k miles.
I can think of no reason why it wouldn't just be daily-driver reliable. It's a car. Go drive it. Stay super duper on top of your oil change interval and use the appropriate oil, but go drive the thing.

I think that's personal preference. Some people have one or two, some people have ten. I think what you have to think to yourself if logistics, finances, and enjoyment.
Logistics:
- Do you have the space for the cars?
- Will you maintain the cars even if they sit?
Finances:
- Can you afford all the vehicles, maintenance, and insurance?
Enjoyment:
- Are you able to enjoy all your cars as intended (i.e. is 5000 km/year in each car enough for you)?
- Perhaps you are a collector, and just owning it is enough?
- Perhaps you are a week-end track guy, double check finances, and are you racing frequently enough to enjoy and value the car enough to justify finances?
For me, I think if you have OTHER people in the home driving, you can share the experience and justify having so many vehicles. Some say 3 cars is ideal for a car enthusiast. Something practical, something week-end, something special. For me, it's two cars and my special car will be changed every once in a while. Right now I'm on a C8, and maybe if my life allows I'd like to dabble in a 911/AMG GT-C/R8/NSX/Vantage/etc. My practical car is my parent's RAV4 if I ever need to move something.

A v6 automatic accord coupe and a manual transmission abarth are different enough from each other, and from the other cars you have, that I think maybe you should get them both.
(The accord coupe would probably duplicate the civic you’re dailying right now. But maybe there are some long highway trips where the coupe would make up for the extra fuel use with extra comfort and quiet.)
And you still don’t have a two seat roadster, or a pickup truck, so you still could use a couple more cars.
And I bet you don’t have enough motorcycles yet either.
So yeah, there’s such a thing as “too many cars,” but I don’t think you’re gonna get there for a while.

It’s only “too much” if it stresses your finances or you don’t actually use them. If you enjoy cars and each one has a purpose, it can make sense. Just factor in insurance, maintenance, and space, those add up faster than people expect.

Wife and I have a 5-car garage with a mezzanine / man cave and regularly keep it full. The key is that the cars be niche, not generic / generalist type cars. The 4Runner is built for offroading. The Tacoma is for Home Depot runs. The budget Chevy EV is our default / daily driver. The Lexus convertible is for fun driving on the weekends. That kind of thing.
The biggest cost to owning cars is depreciation, so the more cars you have the higher the depreciation risk. Most of my cars are Toyota / Lexus, very low depreciation and very low on maintenance / upkeep costs.
Of the cars you have and are planning on, the Civic and Accord seem redundant. Or, the Accord isn't enough of a unique fun car to justify buying it. The Fiat 500 is the poster child for depreciation / maintenance cost risk. Depending on where you live, a more offroad capable camping vehicle might be an appropriate upgrade.
I would upgrade the cars you already have or buy something new that is very niche before adding the two cars you're considering.

I had 3 at that age. If you can afford insurance, maintenance and payments (if any) in all 3, go for it. Turns out they put my brother (who had a DUI) on my policy. If there are any other drivers who live at or use your address, just be prepared to depend yourself.

The older the cars are the better. Most of the depreciation is out of these but you still have excise, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. I’d be surprised if it’s not $5000 per year.
