Can someone smarter then me explain Dell's latest model naming?

So they changed everything a year or so ago with Latitudes and I figured it out. Latitude 3000 series became "Pro", 5000 series became "Pro Plus", and 7000/9000 series became "Pro Premium". Dumb but ok.
Then they changed the Precision line and things got worse. 3000 series became "Pro Max", 7000 series became "Pro Max Plus", and the 5000 series became the high end model above 7000 with the "Pro Max Premium"
Today I get a email for the new "Dell Pro Precision 7 Series 14 Laptop". WTF is going on in Dell marketing land and why did they go backwards and meld the old and new names or am I dumb and missing something? It even has a new model number of PW714260 which seems to add stuff and not match the others (a 16" Pro Plus is like PB16250, a 14" Pro Premium is PA14250, a 16" Pro Max is MB1650, etc).
Can someone explain what this is and where it fits in? It looks like it's a brand new model and they are already abandoning the new naming but only partially? https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/scr/laptops/appref=precision-product-line
PuddingQuick1400@reddit
I had a call with my rep about a month ago, the are ditching the new names after "Much customer feedback" and brining the old product naming back.
jks513@reddit
To be fair, the old naming system didn't make much sense either when you try and look at it logically. It's just everyone got used to it.
ADynes@reddit (OP)
But it did. 3000 < 5000 < 7000. First number was model level, second was screen size, third/fourth was series/generation. So I knew a Latitude 7430 was the higher model, 14" screen, 30 series. I knew what it looked like, what it was probably equipped with, and about how old it was within 8 - 12 months. The revised names like Dell Pro 16 Plus tells me the screen size and thats it.
Elensea@reddit
I remember 2002 intel convention when they were introducing the 3-5-7 intel processor naming and they threw up a bmw logo and the crowd went crazy.
AcidBuuurn@reddit
Perfect setup for a .357 magnum picture and they missed it?
Elensea@reddit
It was in Massachusetts, if it was Dell it would’ve been the magnum.
rollingviolation@reddit
the desktops and thin clients never made sense
looking at the e-waste pile, in chronological order
Optiplex 790 -> Optiplex 7010 -> Optiplex 7020 -> {missing data} -> Optiplex 5050
The thin clients we bought are Optiplex 3010's, not to be confused with the Optiplex 3010 desktop
I fully expect the Dell Max Latitude XPS Optiplex Wyse Zero Config Plus 790 to be the next batch of thin clients...
TheGreatNico@reddit
4th digit was special options. 0 was nothing extra, intel proc. 1 was some special feature, like the old 2n1s with the swivel screen if they also had a regular laptop of that model, and 5 was for AMD processor. I don't recall other numbers being specifically assigned a function.
ADynes@reddit (OP)
Could have sworn I remember a 1 for ARM also but I'm too lazy to look it up. But you are correct, last digit was for something other then normal intel laptop.
TheGreatNico@reddit
ARM laptops weren't a thing when I was there so it might have changed since then
NightOfTheLivingHam@reddit
Good.
Inquisitor_ForHire@reddit
Can I interest you in the new Dell Pro Precision Premium Prophylactic Panzer Plus Plus?
braytag@reddit
Well some of my users would actually need a "panzer" edition... like the old toughbooks!
The laptop may survive engagement or 2(meetings).
poizone68@reddit
Does that come with the Prophylactic Panzer laptop sleeve?
meditonsin@reddit
No, that's the Dell Pro Precision Premium Prophylactic Panzer+ Plus Plus
FLATLANDRIDER@reddit
No, but it does support the new AI CoPilot Powered Cloud-Enabled Prophylactic Panzer Smart Dock
braytag@reddit
I "shocked"..... (not really)
Mindestiny@reddit
After we just did a refresh, great. Now I get to spend another 5 years dealing with Dell Pro Plus Extreme++ AI Edition.
SevaraB@reddit
Right? Just unboxed one of these stupid things this week for my lease replacement. Decent hardware (damn sight better than the 5560 it’s replacing, which I hate with the fire of a thousand suns), but stupid, stupid naming.
NegativePattern@reddit
Hello IT? My nephew who knows computers says I should ask for a Dell Pro Premium Max w/ Copilot. He says the one I have is not good for gaming and that I need to use the Ai more.

ahaley@reddit
You have a rep?! We get a new one every 4 months and each one is dumber than the last.
ADynes@reddit (OP)
Same. We had one for years and then a new one came along about a year ago lasted about 6 or 7 months and then a new one came along for like 2 months and now I'm on another one.
CDW did the same thing to me, I had a great rep for like 5 years and they reorganized and gave me to somebody else that was either non-responsive or wanted to have a 30 minute meeting to give me a quote when I would lay out exactly what I wanted in an email. After a month of that I emailed my old rep and told him to let his manager know if I don't get him back immediately we'd be moving about 100K of software licensing and 30k of hardware a year over to another company. 48 hours later and I got my old rep back.
ADynes@reddit (OP)
Well if this new name is any indication then they are making a hybrid mash up of both old and new and it's awful.
McGillicuddys@reddit
And now we'll have devices in production with all 3 naming conventions for people to remember
ADynes@reddit (OP)
That's exactly what I was thinking. Either go back or stick with what you have. We don't need a third naming scheme.
trusound@reddit
I held off on buying sny hoping they would go back. Can’t be any happier
boondoggie42@reddit
That explains why I just got an email touting the "Pro Precision"
poizone68@reddit
I'm guessing they hired someone who used to work in Microsoft naming products :)
Vermino@reddit
Maybe this site might give a hint
Why yes, you can have a Macbook Pro 14 (M5 Max).
jks513@reddit
No. If they did that then everything would be named Co-Pilot with Azure .NET or something similar.
lllllllllXllllllllll@reddit
Dell Latitude (New)
Dell Latitude (Classic)
AcidBuuurn@reddit
Apple actually did that with the 3rd generation iPads.
smokinbbq@reddit
How about Salesforce naming?
Dell Latitude (Classic)
Dell Latitude (Lightning) - which doesn't have half of the features of Classic.
Evil-Bosse@reddit
Don't forget the New Dell Latitude (New), because that one is a different product line completely and shares no parts with the Latitude by Dell, Dell Latitude (New) or the Dell Latitude 2026
wrosecrans@reddit
Dell's website is full of Copilot branding for the computers even if it's not technically in the model name, so they are half way to your joke already.
jks513@reddit
Microsoft requires that to get a deal on OEM licensing.
andrea_ci@reddit
More like apple
Poetspen@reddit
That was the first thing I thought as well.
bemenaker@reddit
No, Intel. This is like the Core line naming changes.
moopops@reddit
Nvidia Quadro naming since introducing RTX:
2018 : NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 (Turing) 2021 : NVIDIA RTX A4000 (Ampere) 2023 : NVIDIA RTX 4000 (Ada) 2025 : NVIDIA RTX Pro 4000 (Blackwell)
FalsePhoenix@reddit
Yeah they kept pro and aligned it with the old numbering
Pro 3 Pro 5 Pro 7
Are what my rep was telling me last week.
The most confusing element here my rep couldn't explain is that they are keeping the Pro 14 for some reason.
They have the press kit stuff here Press Kit
AidanAmerica@reddit
You need to ask someone dumber than you
981flacht6@reddit
I told Dell this 3 months ago and they said they were gonna bring the oldish name back but abbreviated to 3/5/7. So instead of 3000, it's 3 Series. 7 is 7000. BMW style.
btw that Precision 7 laptop..has a fucking garbage keyboard. I just tried the new XPS keyboard/mouse at Best Buy and it's the worst keyboard I've ever used.
gdj1980@reddit
My budget only allows us to afford Dell Latitude Basic Bitch models.
eyedrops_364@reddit
Missed the mark.
jefbenet@reddit
me thinks somebody over at dell has been biting too many apples /s
pdp10@reddit
I'm out. We're just going to get Macbooks.
NoTime4YourBullshit@reddit
Apple makes a compelling offer with their MacBook Neos.
Sinister_Crayon@reddit
They "merged" with EMC and got rid of all of the old Dell people particularly management. While the biggest initial change was on the Enterprise side it was only a matter of time before the rot infested the rest of the org.
Note the new laptop names are weirdly similar to EMC products from circa 2005. I fully expect their next rebrand to shift things to "eXtreme" like it's 1996 again...
LonelyPatsFanInVT@reddit
Former EMC employee and I can say from my experience this is 100% false and doesn't even make sense logically. What company buys another company and replaces their existing management with the management from the acquired company?
Some of the first EMC people let go were EMC managers. Right away, Dell increased team sizes and fired managers without large enough teams under them. Dell management was riddled with so much incompetence that they drove highly profitable EMC enterprise product lines into the ground.
pdp10@reddit
Quite often, actually. McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, allegedly. Netscape and Collabra:
ImpossiblePaint8033@reddit
The new Dell ThunderCougerFalconBird
Eli_eve@reddit
Far as I can tell, they have, using 14” as the size example:
Pro line:
Pro Max line, recently rebranded as, or maybe just supplemented with, the Pro Precision line:
There’s also the Pro Essential, Pro Education, and Pro Rugged lines which I won’t otherwise mention. No not really a rebranding, seems to me, just a further muddying of the waters by bringing back an old name as a new tier in the new naming scheme.
ADynes@reddit (OP)
What's easier to understand:
TheOzarkWizard@reddit
Dell has been pulling stupid decision making shit since the old dimension clamshell days.
Ssakaa@reddit
Oh that brings back memories. My favorite was the one I put on a stool 'cause the table was 2 steps further away, turn around, reached for post-it to label it with... and heard humpty dumpty hit the floor behind me. Every piece of plastic on the thing came off and went different directions. I'm pretty sure those multi-color tone panels weren't meant to come apart... but oh, boy, did they...
Ziegelphilie@reddit
You can read all about it in the press release; "Dell_laptop_naming_scheme_2026_v7(finalv3)rev2.pdf"
Frothyleet@reddit
Ohhh, there's the problem, their marketing was referencing "Dell_laptop_naming_scheme_2026_v7(finalv3)rev2_JOKE_VERSION_DO_NOT_USE.pdf"
stufforstuff@reddit
Probably the same people that came up with PoE++ and the multiple dozens of USB devices that are all the same but different.
meatwad75892@reddit
Would you recommend a Dell Pro Max Micro with Dell ProSupport Plus, or a Dell Pro Max Micro without Dell ProSupport Plus?
Rio__Grande@reddit
Dell pro max slim Like wtf is this an iPhone?
CantaloupeCamper@reddit
Trying to be like Apple…. but not actually being consistent or logical.
PictureFamiliar1267@reddit
Apples not consistent :) The “max” chip is not the maximum…. That would be the “ultra”
CantaloupeCamper@reddit
People understand Apple’s base naming system, and we were used to it when they started to introduce that kind of thing.
The only weird stuff applies to the top models that only a handful people really need to know about and it’s pretty easily sorted out.
Dell just introduced the absurdity altogether so everything looks weird.
PictureFamiliar1267@reddit
I really don’t know why they moved away from Latitude, XPS, Precision :/
Arudinne@reddit
Don't forget Inspiron and G Series (which is distinct from Alienware)
CantaloupeCamper@reddit
Yeah, I don’t even deal with Dell that much and I had those memorized. I and probably everyone else knew exactly what they meant.
DestinyForNone@reddit
They have am actual naming convention chart...
But I only ever remember seeing it in the premier portal... I'll have to see if I can still find it.
I mean, I've bought enough of the new ones, that I've got a fairly okay understanding? But, it's still a bit convoluted. I'm just glad I can still get deploy drivers for them lol.
LonelyPatsFanInVT@reddit
Looks like they're rebranding....AGAIN
https://www.extremetech.com/computing/dell-ditches-applestyle-naming-with-its-pro-laptop-refresh
CantaloupeCamper@reddit
They do seem to know they fucked up.
The_Water_Is_Dry@reddit
Yup seems like they're planning to bring back the old naming? New one straight up sucks.
HappyDadOfFourJesus@reddit
I just work with model numbers. No need for names then.
Solid_Shook@reddit
Nope it would be nice if they stop changing it every other year
RaNdomMSPPro@reddit
It's easier to rename things than make things better. In Dell's case they are desperate to get more people buying their higher level "support" plans, so the ol' razzle dazzle is the strategy and hope you don't notice they tacked on pro support plus level 17 ++ for your basic laptop that only has win11 installed.
Darkk_Knight@reddit
Linus Tech Tips covered this awhile ago. I am used to the old naming convention the past 20+ years. Someone said Dell is going back to the old naming scheme.
