ULPT What can I do to deter substance dealers on my street?
Posted by CaptSwirly@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 73 comments
My old neighbour a few doors down unfortunately has been moved into a care home, her children are renting the house out and the tenants are (with actual documented proof) selling substances.
I have no problem with the actual hustle of it, they take the risk regarding law enforcement and in this economy… I can’t blame them tbh.
My problem is they have asked people to park along the street a few houses away, so the cars coming between 9:30pm and 3:30am and thus people walking past between those hours disturbs my dog who then barks… a lot.
Now I’m in trouble with the local authorities because he is teetering on the edge of being labelled a “nuisance animal” which means he’ll have to be re-homed. I’m not giving up my dog, there’s no questions or arguments there.
We also now have “undesirable characters” frequenting the neighbourhood. Things are going missing, houses are being broken into, trash dumped all along the street and worst of all… the needles in the local park where the kids play.
So… I need tips on how to deter them or even get them to move house because again, you do you, until it affects me!

If you’ve got documentation, anonymous tip to the fuzz
Exciting-Team5807@reddit
It sounds like you’re a white person.
You should try to get to know your neighbors, and understand that you don’t own the world. Stick to the world you can own, the one inside your head.
Your dog training post seems to be misplaced! Take this over to r/dog training and see what you can do.
My recommendation is you need to work on crate training, not as punishment, simply as regulation for a pup. They won’t be barking at the fence if they’re asleep in a box. You’d have to tell me more about the situation, but I don’t think you should fuck with neighbors aka people. Love and let live. Keep your side of the street clean.
igoogletoo@reddit
Lmao, pretty sure OP already posted this to r/dog ... they said to call the cops.
White or not (lmao bold assumption) I think things getting stolen, houses broken into and needles in the playground would bother a person of any color and goes beyond the "crate your dog" advice 🤷♂️
Exciting-Team5807@reddit
It would bother a lot of people. I’m not denying that. I am saying “get over it, whitey.”
UnethicalLifeProTips-ModTeam@reddit
Your comment was removed for violating rule 14: No reason to be a dick. Seriously, get therapy or fuck off.
Ichgebibble@reddit
So only white people have a problem with the traffic and trash on their street? Why, because the drug dealers are black in your mind? Why do you assume drug dealers are black?
Exciting-Team5807@reddit
Did… did I mention black people??? Dumbass. Pay the fuck attention.
White people complain about their neighbors without having the sense to solve the problem.
As for black people, I’m not talking about them, dumbass.

gotchafaint@reddit
So you’re saying brown people are ok with drug dealers on their street and only a white person would have issues?
EatSleepJeep@reddit
No what they're saying is "I'm a racist!"
Exciting-Team5807@reddit
Y’all are dumb as fuck. Generalization making dumbasses the both of you.
I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT BLACK OR BROWN PEOPLE. I AM TALKING ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE. Stupid motherfucker, pay attention!

typical_mistakes@reddit
Just in case you didn't understand that word salad, let me translate that. She said "You'll be happier if you move to a white neighborhood."
LevelPerception4@reddit
So this is not an ULPT, but it could save you some stress:
Have you had any interactions with them? I would start by having a quick chat with them (bring some cookies) and talk to them like business owners. Never use the word drugs. Ask if they can adjust their hours, request customers not use your street or make deliveries instead of doing business out of the house.
AgateHuntress@reddit
That worked for us a long time ago when my kids were pre-school age. Had a neighbor rent his two story, run-down Victorian house to a dealer, and for about a week, there was a lot of loud music that would vibrate our windows at three in the morning, they'd park in our parking spot, and an occasional dirty diaper chucked into our yard from their side of the fence.
My then-husband went over and talked to the woman running the operation, charmed her up, and we never really had another problem with them again. If any of her customers got loud at night, or even parked in our parking area, she'd set them straight right away. In the end, they were actually good, friendly neighbors that kept watch over our little area.
The_zen_viking@reddit
Could go well.
Could get shot.
ChingusMcDingus@reddit
Yeah man knowing the guys on my street they’d deliberately make things worse from a chat.
In my experience, reporting a drug dealer is futile. Cops can’t and shouldn’t just search somebody just because there’s some secondhand suspicion.
What you can do is call cops for some other reason when people are coming for transactions. “I think there’s a guy with a weapon running around the street. He’s peering over people’s fences and rambling about hurting somebody.”
ethidium_bromide@reddit
Reporting to police really does work in some places.
What feels like several lifetimes ago, I was addicted to drugs. Got ripped out of the car by the vice squad once. They told us someone who lived on the street had reported repeat, suspicious transactions. The police started watching the street, and the person we bought from. Apparently that person had gang affiliations so the police were after them hard. The vehicle that got us was a relatively new BMW, but they had multiple cars involved in surveilling the street at once and a few others who blocked our car in at a red light.
All that to say, I wouldn’t expect that to work unless you’re in a city that throws a lot of money into drug enforcement.
ChingusMcDingus@reddit
Nah my city likes to sweep it under the rug and turn a blind eye cause it hurts tourism.
Exciting-Team5807@reddit
Just try meeting them. No ulterior motives. Just meet your neighbors. Crackheads are usually only scary when they’re having a mental health episode. If they’re chill, just get to know them.
Acidcore@reddit
Honestly, I wouldn't talk to them about this. There's a good chance they are chill and comply. There's also a good chance that they don't and now they know you have a problem with them. Wost case someone else busts them and they blame you.
ChingusMcDingus@reddit
My neighbors aren’t crackheads they’re dealers and they do not give a fuck 100%.
The crackheads are cool as fuck. It’s not necessarily their fault they have an addiction.
LevelPerception4@reddit
I was just thinking that if they ask their customers to park on adjacent streets, that shows some interest in avoiding neighbors’ complaints.
360No-ScopedYourMum@reddit
Make it about the dog. I have no problem with you guys at all, it just sets my dog off every time your friends park by my house and the neighbours on the other side are trying to get my dog taken away because of the barking.
I'm on your side, I don't care what you do, I just care about my dog.
boomerbmr@reddit
Yes
bnjman@reddit
Then if you or someone else calls the cops, they'll think/know it was you. Great!
wawa2022@reddit
I told one neighbor that he couldn’t do whatever in front of my garage. Once I said “I don’t care what or where, as long as it doesn’t affect me”, they just moved 15 feet down. My other neighbors aren’t so glad about it, but it solved MY problem and they can go have the conversation next if willing. Just be the first one to bring it up as it’s easier if you’re the first one to say not in my back yard. (Yay for nimbyism)
Witty_Candle_3448@reddit
Ask the police for increased drive by checks due to suspicious foot traffic. Increased lights, cameras and consider a sign that says Smile You are on Camera.
Last_Strike_8901@reddit
Go to the city council. Show documentation. Show the trail of evidence.
Chiviva@reddit
Knock on their door “hey bro FBI knocked on my door asking questions about you the other day. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Later bro”
markriffle@reddit
something along these lines could worklol
Chiviva@reddit
You’d have to play it really cool and get in the mindset of “I am genuinely warning this guy about the police”.
I’d probably light a doink up and let it smoke out underneath me so I reeked of tree before I went. Let my stubble grow out for a day or two. Wear somethin ratty. Say “fuck the pigs” But NO MORE THAN TWICE lol
GardenHobbit@reddit
Bright lights and cameras. Stand at your window with a note pad and pretend you’re taking down plate numbers and “take pics” with your phone. Unleash your inner Karen. Step outside when one pulls up and loudly ask, “Are you buying drugs? That house is down the street.”
RileyGein@reddit
All these ethical solutions sicken me.
OP, fuck the drug dealer’s wife, the napalm the apartment
OneManGang2001@reddit
You're allowed to say drugs.
HippyGeek@reddit
Wellness checks.
r200james@reddit
Drug dealers attract nasty people to your street. Plus, theses dealers are probably heavily armed to protect their cash and the stash.
The people patronizing the dealers are not folks you want to meet.
I would get the local drug cops notified and on the case. Drug dealers in the neighborhood is too risky for everyone.
Diggity20@reddit
Change your wifi tag to DEA Surveillance Your Street. Then talk about them asking questions within earshot of said bad guys
kurtstoys@reddit
Mine said "surveillance server #3" for a while
FreshwaterFryMom@reddit
We used to use FBI SURVEILLANCE VAN as ours, our neighbor was an interesting guy so we changed it. He moved shortly after lol
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
We had a WiFi showing up that said “pet vogn 1” (Danish intelligence service van 1) for a while. Coincidentally we also had undercover cops sitting in a vehicle close by in that period. I try to tell myself there’s no way they’re that stupid, but I always found it a bit funny
SM1334@reddit
I use "Bathroom cam 1" and "Bathroom cam 2"

Plus, the customers will now have to park a few houses away from OP.

Lots of fake cameras. Motion lights?
DMmeDuckPics@reddit
Get a million light spotlight and shine it on them as they walk past. There and back.
c4pt1n54n0@reddit
I like how everyone else also forgot the units used to measure light and were all just going along with a million light light
kurtstoys@reddit
Million...pshh...billion light light candle
mxchickmagnet86@reddit
The Ring lights on the default settings that announces in a pleasant female robot voice "Hi, you are being recorded!" should do the trick
HauntingObligation@reddit
I fully appreciate the nuisance and difficulty of these problem neighbours, buuut I really think that you should consider training your dog to not go apeshit at every passing pedestrian/parked car?
It's not "give up the dog or get rid of the neighbours", there is a 3rd option here that doesn't even seem to be considered. If your dog is that loud just because people are parking in the street and walking a hundred meters up the road and back, your dog is in fact a nuisance, sorry.
But fuck that noise, that's ethical talk. I vote piss discs and a paintball gun, idk.
glitterbeardwizard@reddit
Look up parking bylaws in your area. Most areas have a “residential parking only” bylaw. and call bylaw to tow the cars.
Terrible-Tree-8851@reddit
Ask the customers to bring treats for your dog?
Plethorian@reddit
"You going to Joe's?"
"Yeah, maybe."
"Don't forget to take treats for the dog."
"What dog?"
"You'll know. Just have treats."
Worriedlytumescent@reddit
Rent a panel van. Park it several houses away. Have friends wear cheap suits and come and go from the back door several times a day. Set up a camera in the passengers seat and try to hide it but not well. Have food delivered to it.
Plethorian@reddit
If you do this, get all the optional insurance they offer. Don't leave anything you value in the van.
EatSleepJeep@reddit
To the next lazy city waste-of-space that talks to you: "Lemme get this straight - Y'all want to penalize me for having a dog that barks at the patrons of the neighborhood trap house but not do anything about the trap house itself? Make that make sense."
DetectiveDizzyEyes@reddit
Report them to the police anonymously
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
A small gang moved into my neighbor’s apartment once. My neighbor’s boyfriend was dealing at first, then there was a dry by shooting by a rival gang where the gang usually hung out, so they couldn’t stay there and yeah moved in next to us. A lot of shady people started showing up, no one really felt safe anymore. We all reported them to the cops, not anonymously though. We had undercover cops sitting outside in a car for a few months, just watching and to intervene if anything happened, they also made a direct phone line specifically for that case where we could ring and text if needed. It took a few months and the gang and boyfriend disappeared over night. We think the girlfriend (the one that actually lived there) snitched them out eventually, they broke down her door one night when she wasn’t home. She moved quickly and another girl moved in an was woken up one night my a few men who wanted to beat the shit out of the girlfriend.
It was a pretty wild summer. All the people involved in that gang except the leader shared like 2 braincells. We heard a lot of bullshit, they were dumb as fuck lol
Riamoka@reddit
"YOU CALL ANONYMOUSLY"
"I CANT, THEY'LL KNOW MY VOICE, THEY KNOW ME!"
simikoi@reddit
Motion sensor flood lights and cameras that speak .."hello, you are currently being recorded" They'll start walking from the other direction real quick.
As for the dog, you may need it to sleep in the back room.
Terrible-Tree-8851@reddit
Better yet. Say “it’s a sting operation, you are being setup”
simikoi@reddit
The "hello, you are currently being recorded" message is standard, I think it's Ring or maybe some other brand. I come across it all the time in my job.
Terrible-Tree-8851@reddit
Ah, ok.
New-Scientist5133@reddit
Get your dog a vibrating bark collar so he doesn’t have to be rehomed.
Call the police anonymously every chance you get so they’re constantly getting visits.
ACynicalOptomist@reddit
Report and say that you think that they're doing drugs but there's also underage kids going in and out.
boomerbmr@reddit
This is not advice. Just my thoughts.
If it was me, I’d go over there and talk with them, explain the situation, explain you got no problem with the hustle and that you want to work out a mutually beneficial solution. You may need a translator idk but go prepared.
Drug dealers are business people. Good neighborhood relations is good business. They actually need you to be on their side WAY more than you need anything from them. You can get them outa there with one phone call to the authorities. They need your cooperation or their business and liberty go away.
I’d say have the junkies park to the south if you live to the north. That way they’re only coming that way. Or have em come in the alley if they got one.
Maybe tell the neighborhood plug they gotta go trap somewhere else at night, during certain hours.
Bottom line is, talk to em man to man.
If they’re assholes and they don’t play ball, leave their gas stove slightly open when you walk out the house. If the house doesn’t blow up within the next 10hrs or so, then go ahead and drop a dime on em.
As far as the neighborhood, that ship has most likely sailed. Once the walking dead are comfortable in an area it’s pretty tough to chase us off. I would suggest maybe a monthly neighborhood event to go clean up the park, and get you some CCTV cameras. Lock your deadbolt and don’t leave your windows unlocked when away from the house.
Feel free to DM me for more fun ideas! I do have some knowledge of the subject matter.
simikoi@reddit
How far away are they? Get a Wi-Fi router that's pretty powerful with a lot of range and set the Wi-Fi name to "police broadband" or "FBI Surveillance" or anything like that. If it has enough range they will see it every time anybody tries to access their Wi-Fi.
Appropriate-Taste124@reddit
Set a wifi within range of them named "survalence van 1". Set up cameras and motion lights. Call the cops and report nuisance noises
Terrible-Tree-8851@reddit
You could try the honest approach and talk to them. Let them know that the neighbours have been reporting the “traffic” your dog alerts them to, to the police. Explain you have no issues with their business, but wanted to let them know in case they want to adjust their guests parking instructions.
