Is it better to be hired as expansion/growth or as a backfill at a startup in current economy?

Do you think joining a young company as a replacement for someone who left is safer than due to the said company growing?
The company was established 6 years ago, and has been know to have a higher employee churn.

Backfill or expansion are the same.
What matters more is company trajectory and healthy culture. High churn and layoffs are not good. Take it if you need to pay the bills, and keep searching.

Based on my research so far, the company's growth is really dynamic as they are a startup. They laid-off when things got tough 2 years ago, and hiring now due as things are looking good with big SaaS contracts coming in. Which is why I was wondering if my position being backfill role that "always" existed will make any difference in my job security or not.

I don't think backfill or not makes any difference. Startups are volatile.
Zero expectations and decent amount of savings could help.

Rule 4: No "Which Offer Should I Take" Posts
Asking if you should ask for a raise, switch companies (“should I work for company A or company B”), “should I take offer A or offer B”, or related questions, is not appropriate for this sub.
This includes almost any discussion about a “hot market”, comparing compensation between companies, etc.

High employee churn is a huge red flag way more important than whether you are a backfill.

I understand, high churn means toxic place to work at. I'll consider it among other reasons for leaving my current place.

Usually backfill. The headcount is stable.
Growth hires get cut first if the business goals are not met.
