I learnt a valuable lesson two days ago!

So two days ago my son who is 39 years my junior challenged me to a foot race, now I’m a fairly active guy, play tennis twice a week, go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, do all the heavy lifting jobs around our little farm, BUT it took maybe 10 strides into the race before I hit the deck… hard!!
My wife, in-laws and one of her uncles and aunts were all spectators, after they had finished laughing and I’d picked myself up and hobbles over to them, my wife said that if it wasn’t for the lack of a loud bang they thought I’d been shot.
Today I had to take myself to urgent care as the pain hasn’t gotten less, in fact it’s gotten worse, turns out I have a 5xm tear in my abductor longus, the guy doing the scan nearly wet himself laughing when I told him how it happened, turns out that sympathy isn’t offered very easily to us Gen Xers.
Anyway I knew this day would come when my kid was quicker, just wasn’t expecting it so soon, now he just needs to get stronger so he can come do the heavy lifting when fire wood chopping
Boom_Gate_Lady@reddit
What are you all doing physically competing with your own children?? I find this super weird.
formernonhandwasher@reddit
Check this out. Five weeks ago I was reading an article about how you’d live longer if you could stand from a cross legged position without going to knees or using hands. Showed my wife how easy it was for me and being cocky. She couldn’t do it so I did it in super slow motion and held the crucial position to make it happen. Felt a pain in my back that slowly got worse over a week. Got to the point I was on the floor and after day three I was peeing in a bowl. When asking for a diaper my wife said “what are we doing?” Called the ambulance and pain was kill me 10/10. Gave me a bunch of Fentanyl on the ride there. Fast forward a month and here I am. On FMLA not getting paid and will have lost over $10k in wages before I get back to work. Still mostly on the floor and only able to walk a couple minutes at a time. Have a Microdiscectomy on Monday with a 3-4 week recovery before I go back to work. Such a dumb way to hurt yourself. Fuck that study.

Holy shite. Well done!

I am at the point where I figure if the aliens or zombies come, I’ll be one of these Non-Player Characters wiped out in the opening scene.
pinkfootthegoose@reddit
Think of it as holding them off so others can escape. You will be remembered as the hero who sacrificed themselves for other. Instead of a pulled hamstring.
Mobile-Piel@reddit
(this is me - I'm the helper who helps others get away) 😂😂😂
Ok_Driver8646@reddit
Ahhh hell no. I’m going to be the slow walking “loner guy” with the dog just keeping chill and bad ass when necessary. 🤣
maxsmoke105@reddit
I am very fond of saying that if you see me running something has gone terribly wrong. Try to keep up. My friends that know my background take this very seriously.
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
Ex-EOD?
maxsmoke105@reddit
I'm not sure I'd say ex.I still enjoy making things disappear thought rapid expansion.
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
Miss playing with you lot, in a former life I was one of the ones with the furry 4 legged detection devices
maxsmoke105@reddit
Our furry friend have/had more sense than we do. Though I know for a fact that they love the rush just as much. Been out for a while but I sure miss the brotherhood.
MagentaMist@reddit
I tore my meniscus at 39 playing pickup with a bunch of teenagers.
archedhighbrow@reddit
I also was 39 when tearing my meniscus playing flag football. Flash forward, and I'm in physical therapy for the same knee, which has a possible tear again.
dontskimponfootwear@reddit
I tore my meniscus playing laser tag with my kids. So humbling. I wear a brace to this day
archedhighbrow@reddit
Did you adapt to the brace well?
Bright_Broccoli1844@reddit
I am impressed you play tennis.
dontskimponfootwear@reddit
Tennis is a great sport you can play for decades! I play doubles with a couple of 80 year olds.
iwastherefordisco@reddit
I raced a younger coworker who played and coached soccer, in the parking lot at work.
I pulled a hamstring so bad I thought I could hear it and hobbled badly the final 20 meters.
He tripped and ate rocks and pavement. Hands, arms, face...all scraped up.
Supervisor was not happy with both of us getting injured and bloodied up at work.
* I won :)

Im 46 and gen x .. how do you have a 39 year old son and in gen x forum ?
1967TinSoldier@reddit
I'm 58, kids are 38, 35 & 32. If you start young, they try to catch you.
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
I’m 46, my son is 7, 39 years my junior
SunshineandBullshit@reddit
I'm 57 and have a 42 yo daughter....
craftyrunner@reddit
39 years his junior. So son could be 15.
AlarmedWillow4515@reddit
I believe the oldest GenX turned 60 recently. If he had the kid young the math would work.
Substantial_Layer_79@reddit
I learned a long time ago how to tell if you are old: If you fall and people laugh, you're not old. If you fall, and people gasp, come running, and want to call 911. You're old. Keep on keeping on, and I hope you heal quickly.
Bromperhue43@reddit
If you stand on a chair and have to think about the best way down, you are old. If you jump off, still young.
CitizenChatt@reddit
Oh boy
maroongrad@reddit
Now you know. PUSH HIM DOWN then take off running. Gives you a pretty good head start.
Why_so_glum_chum@reddit
Now THAT'S GEN X! 🤣🤣🤣
UnrealizedDreams90@reddit
I'm 53. My oldest grandson turns 7 next month. I'll be surprised if I can still beat him by the end of the summer.
adaminoregon@reddit
Worst part about getting old. Had to give up the mosh pit. My back cant take it anymore. Super bummer.
some_dude3645@reddit
One of the things I miss most 🤘 but I can still headbang, almost no hair but at 57 I refuse to give up my loud banging rock and roll 🤘
paintingdusk13@reddit
I learned at like 30 my body isn't that of a teen.
mazerbrown@reddit
My 77 year old mom fell out of a tree and broke her arm two weeks ago. Not off the ladder, out of the tree. After multiple times of me telling her to stay out of it. She was gonna do what she was gonna do though. Even I'm not dumb enough to climb in trees any more. And she doesn't have dementia. When are us old people going to realize we're not 12 any more!?!
Fickle_Wrangler_7439@reddit
Your mom sounds cool. Why stop climbing trees? Everyone's gotta go someday somehow. Have some fun with it.
butterflygardyn@reddit
My boomer dad was going to show us kids how to iceskate. He wiped out and ended up in the ER. Happens to every man eventually.
Enough_Equivalent379@reddit
As a young man, I went roller skating a lot. Had my own very high end skates, did all the dancing, etc. Last fall, at my granddaughter's birthday skating party, I rented a pair, stood up and said Nope! Ain't gonna happen. My wife was relieved. I was dejected 😔
butterflygardyn@reddit
Lol. My dad broke his favorite watch, sprained his wrist and had a mild concussion. You made a good choice.
Enough_Equivalent379@reddit
Well yeah, but it still sucks getting old.
TroubleWhole7339@reddit
Wow! Tennis und Gym! Hero
emax4@reddit
Challenge him to a mortgage payment competition.
calmlikeasexbobomb@reddit
Old man strength is a thing
Old man speed is not
psp8@reddit
So yea to all of us GenX’ers when was the last time you actually ran - not jogged? The reason I say this is that muscle memory doesn’t last forever and actually quite the opposite. I had a similar incident without the injury when I started playing softball again a couple years back. I got a good hit and took off in a full sprint ( I thought) and it felt like I was running on someone else’s legs!!! I almost biffed it and settled into a slow jog to save my pride… be careful out there and try and keep those muscles working in case you do ever need them
manjar@reddit
I've been working on my 1 mile time. Recently got it down to 8 minutes. This is not the same as a 60-foot sprint, but it's brisk enough to help me understand my limits. And I feel much better in general.
Automatic-Pick-2481@reddit
First time I tried sprinting playing tennis after a decade of no tennis I fell forward and landed on my face.
Fast forward 7 years and now I can run without falling on my face.
The lesson, don’t stop moving
WileyCoyote7@reddit
Guess you can’t “walk it off” this time. Did you try putting some dirt on it? /s
FarmerDave13@reddit
How to know when you're old. Fall down. If friends and family laugh, not old. If they panic dial 911 and start telling you to stay down until help arrives, old......./s
Glad you survived.
redbeard914@reddit
You need to up your game: Old age and treachery beats youth and skill.
You should have tripped him! 🙃
Even_Antelope_1085@reddit
Worst part of getting old - you CAN still mostly do the things you used to, BUT, you need to warm up and start sloooow. And your still sore for 5 days after
mrbuh@reddit
I think we all learned a valuable lesson about hubris.
BeerCooker_321@reddit
Yea…If I had to sprint to save someone they would just have to accept their fate or hope for someone younger to save them.
Carlito2393@reddit
I think your genx card can be revoked for expecting sympathy.
froction@reddit
When I was a senior in HS my friends and I started playing racquetball after school. One day my dad decided he would come "teach us a lesson" and to his credit he absolutely destroyed his opponents.
He literally could not get out of bed for almost three days after. Like he peed in a bottle.
blueblocker2000@reddit
Your abductor what now?
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
Yep I learnt a new word as well
Bartlaus@reddit
Is he still small enough so you can send him in to do stuff in cramped places?
ONROSREPUS@reddit
That is what grandkids are for.
Oh so you want to learn how to build something, Here squeeze under the deck and help me hang this fencing up. Don't have to be pretty just effective.
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
Well yes but the problem with that is that I live in Australia and we have a reputation about deadly animals and they like to hang out in the small cramped spaces, his mum would skin me alive if I was the cause of our only child getting bitten one of our nasties
DPax_23@reddit
You can race my kid. He's slow AF.
DefinitelyBiscuit@reddit
Physically or....?
DPax_23@reddit
😆
renegade7717@reddit
challenge him to a fire making contest- you got this!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Hmmmm, Not sure, some big city slicker kids never got this gene.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
The older we get we are built for power and comfort. Let the speed keep to the young ones. I know this is to late for OP but maybe I can save some other young minded fool from making the same mistake.
notevenapro@reddit
I do arthrograms on joints as part of my job. Inject joints with contrast so the person can get an MRI.
Want to know what the classic Gen X shoulder injury is due to? Pickleball is the most common sport. And yes, we laugh with the patient. A little humor takes away the anxiety from having a needle jammed into your joint.
Impressive-Shame-525@reddit
I tore a hammy helping my brother put his boat in the lake. I was guiding, he was backing. Heard a woman yell, saw a stroller zipping to the water. Took off running. Maybe 15 - 20 strides felt this burning pain but I caught the damn strolled.
Entire back side of my leg was black and blue and yellow for months. Wife had to help get my shoes off for the longest.
No-Jump-9601@reddit
I learnt, a long time ago, that sudden bursts of activity are not advisable. I, like you, am fairly fit for 53 and try to keep active, gym, hiking and swimming in conjunction with a physical job. Yes, I can lift and carry, dig holes and survive from morning to evening without too many aches and pains. Sudden bursts of energy however are dangerous with many unknown side effects and is common in all of my friends of a similar age. Those not part of our Gen X community have no idea what awaits them in a few short years.
No-Elk-6200@reddit
What was the valuable lesson?
Active_Assignment_65@reddit (OP)
Maybe the bit about being too old to accept foot races against a 7 year old and think that I can win or that I’m now old enough to hurt myself just running
Upbeat_Ant6104@reddit
That the right attitude: nothing you can do about him beating you, might as well get some work out of him! I have the same age difference with my nephews, and this was the first year they outworked me, digging post holes. Sad but also very satisfying!
mden1974@reddit
Next time fake a heart attack and then take off when he comes to help you.
