ULPT: Saving a spot for open office seating

If your office has first come, first-served open seating, uses wireless keyboards, and you want to save a spot for next time, switch the keyboard with another one at another work station. People will think the keyboard is not working and won’t sit there.

What kind of particularly cruel hell is an office where employees have to fight for a desk?
Embarrassed_Flan_869@reddit
This is actually pretty common. I know several very large US companies that do this.
Some are reservation style, where you reserve a desk, others are just show up with your laptop and grab a desk.
A lot of times, different teams unofficially "claim" an area. While it isn't an assigned desk, the same people sit in the same areas. Usually in an area not as desirable.

I sit next to a bunch of assholes at work. I would prefer to sit as far away from them as possible, or at least somewhere with my monitor pointing away from the micromanager team leader.

My last employer had a return to office policy implemented right as they took away assigned seating. They made you register that morning from your phone for a spot. It was an extra pain in the ass on top of the pointless return to office (I didn't work with anybody in the state; it made zero difference for collaboration since my team was spread across the world)

Mine too. And it sounds so silly but I was sad I couldn't decorate my desk anymore. And it put senior leaders in cubicles with the rest of us and only directors had offices.

That reminds me of the rest of the fun. The plebes got bench style seats, manglers got cubicles, and directors kept their hard walled offices. At least I got a medical exemption to keep working from home for the last few months before they laid me off because the cleaners kept throwing away vials of insulin I used to keep in the refrigerator

It wouldn't bother me much, all our desks are close to identical setups, just connect laptop to the dock and off you go

The three office jobs I've had all had unassigned seating unless you were a high level position.

India?

Usually in this kind and of setup either every one has its own wireless keyboard mouse dongle that they don't leave on the desk or it's keyboard mouse with wire.

In that case tape on the mouse laser

Yeah that's a good one. Imagine i used to remove the mouses' balls back in the days.

There used to be a 'hot' desk next to my permanent one that people would use and there was always some super annoying dude that would talk loud on the phone, busy body up and down up and down, would not sit still. So if I knew he was coming in that day I'd always unplug the hardwired phone. He'd look at it confused and then go find another seat far away from me. Once he left I'd plug it back in.
