The US will increase military presence to countries it considers friendly like Romania and Greece, while taking away bases from countries it considers hostile as punishment (see next slide). Thoughts?

They would LOVE to close a base in France... Oh wait.
Strict-Being-6246@reddit
Germany is the heart of its operations in Europe and the main hub of logistics to the Middle East and Africa. Spain is the refueling hub for the Navy and Air Force, and also a key hub for logistics into Africa. Leaving those bases would be a nightmare for them. It wouldn’t be as bad as Afghanistan, but it would still leave a massive hole in their military. I highly doubt any general would go along with that.

Our government will be ecstatic if this happens as our ruling party has suddenly discovered it always loved Trump after he got reelected. Our communists will start many loud and ultimately useless demonstrations against the presence of the "evil imperialist yankees". The normal people won't give a damn.

Erdogan is going to go away. Turks are going to stay forever. We should not be enemies, we should be brothers. I cringe when I think that for all of time, Greeks and Turks will have to live next to each other as enemies.
Far_Rain7916@reddit
It's insane that you think endogan is the problem. The motto of the vast majority of Turks is 'Greeks learned how to swim' when they refer to the genocide of greeks (and armenians), (unharmed women, children, and elderly mind you,)under the command of the ultranationalist young Turks.
Turks are openly talking about their blue homeland while they deny the genocides their grandparents did and you believe Turks want to be our friends.

no its not used for that its used for kicking the greek army out of anotolia
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
right.
but that's not what happened, lol.
the Greek army withdrew "regularly" (in fact, the Greek army employed a "scorched earth" policy during it, but let's not go into that).

sex_drugs_and_sauron@reddit
Yeah "withdrew regularly" haha, is that what they teach you guys over there? No darling, we kicked your sorry butts out of Anatolia big time. You guys are creative about finding foolish excuses when you lose a war :) And calling the massacres and atrocities greek army did while fleeing "scorched earth" policy is a confession in itself.
pitogyros@reddit
Do you get the concept of withdraw ? Yes Greek army lost the battles / war and withdrew regularly on their ships , Turkish army arrived days later in Izmir , there was no Greek soldier to be “ thrown in the sea “ , just civilians
SOHONEYSAME@reddit

No. They are referring to the morons trying to justify the greek invasion of Anatolia with mental gymnastics.
Very, very, very few politicans do and mostly to maximize EEZ gains. Not that I disagree with it, but EEZ has nothing to do with any kind of territorial dispute.
Rich coming from you, when we consider the fact that greeks on average are not even aware of what their soldiers did in Anatolia. Does burning people alive in mosques ring a bell or you dont consider that a genocide, because it happened to turks?

To be honest, as a Turk I have never seen any hostility against me when I had visited Greece, both mainland and Greek islands, or met Greeks abroad. It is the online Greeks and Turks who fight with each other - which I am guilty of as well. I have seen real life, in person hostility sometimes racism towards me in Germany, in Austria, in the US but never in Greece.
Except once: we had lunch somewhere in Athens and were going to visit a museum or something (been while.) An Athens taxi driver took us for a long trip, while telling stories about how his grandparents had moved from Istanbul. It turns out, where we lunched was only a few hundred meters from where we wanted to go! How dare he! That would never happen in Istanbul! /s

You might be interested to know, that if campaign rhetoric is anything to go by, the main opposition the kemalists (CHP) seem even more agressive than erdogan in regards to our disputes. Their critique is that he is "too soft" and an american pushover. If you think there is light at the end of this tunnel anytime soon I believe you are mistaken
kodial79@reddit
It doesn't matter. What matters is that we live next to each other and we will live next to each other for as long as we exist. For this simple fact alone, we must not be enemies, we must become friends.
Failed_General@reddit
of course I agree, this is not a sustainable long term relationship but saying friends not enemies if ofcourse the easiest thing to do and not really helpful. the problem is, what would it take for us to be friends with turkey today? we were quite good in the 1950's, what changed? Well first its the Cyprus dispute. There are valid points on both sides, as is always the case in history but the occupation of the north 52 years later is blatantly illegal, as well as the large incentivized migration of mainland turks to northern Cyprus as to alter the demographics of the island to their favor, officially condemned by the UN. So, in the sake of "good relations" do you recognize this Israeli style colonization project as an independent country?
The second issue is the Aegean EEZ dispute. Similarly, each side has at least one good argument, however our position is in line with the UN law of maritime borders, turkey has not signed it and claims is incompatible with the nature of our local geography, well fine, greece has long proposed international meditation so that both countries can present their argument in front of an international and neutral court to figure this out, guess which country disagrees. Would you capitulate to any Turkish demand then in the sake of good relations?
Lastly as to the territorial disputes over the islands themselves, just look at the Imia/kardak crisis. You have a historical precedent here. No country regarded the imia as Turkish islands and frankly no one cared. One sunny little day turkey escalates this to a full blown military stand-off with American intervention at the last minute to prevent full out war and suddenly there are "grey zones" in the aegean, that means that out of unquestioned greek territory there are now active territorial claims towards us and the "good guy diplomatic compromise" is that its unclear whose land this is. Under these circumstances and dubious at best legal reasons turkey requests the full demilitarization of a bunch of islands of their coast. So, for one last time I ask you, would you give in to the increasing and maximalist demands of the Turkish state in the name of good relations? Would you willingly handicap your own military on the opposite end of Europes largest amphibious army?
I do not consider myself a nationalist and I wont shy away from criticizing my country when needed, but this is not the time. I invite you to further look into the issue, but in this case it is not us that causes the problems, greece has time and time over again shown restraint and willingness to negotiate and start over, it is the Turkish side that has largely caused the situation as it is today and as things stand active deterrence and a defensive posture with an openness for dialogue is the only viable path for us.
Yavannia@reddit
Guess who voted Erdogan.
Few-Interview-1996@reddit
Exactly our thinking when it comes to the Iranians, by the way.
eddymeshgood@reddit
let's not forget both countries politicians used to scare it's population as "gimme vote or turks are coming" and vice versa, this has been the case since forever it's an easy pick, and it works. fear will always get you votes and tryrants will maintain their power. but that doesn't mean majority of both countries hate each other, you are confusing with the loud minority rather tban silent majority. thus turks and greeks are literally the same.
Few-Interview-1996@reddit

"Being an enemy of the USA can be dangerous, but being a friend is fatal." Henry Kissinger
Those who think american presence in these countries is a good thing are going to find themselves in the position of the GCC countries today, eventually.
They are not there to protect you against anyone or anything but to make you a target instead. When israeli marauders set their eyes on Turkiye these countries will be considered as legitimate targets for Turkiye and receive a punishment instead of israel.
So you are not "protected", you are being used by zionist bunch as an expendable asset in the coming season.
freza223@reddit
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Also an increased presence here will mean they'll meddle even more in our internal affairs.
Jediuzzaman@reddit
Yup.
They using the same strategum Rome applied on occupied lands back in the time. A fortified military position in the depths of the targeted area been used to sow dissent among the people by creating social distrust via creating and/or supporting different factions. Deepening it via assasinations, murders and false flag operations etc. and placing itself as a intermediate/protector figure. Solidifying their presence as a guaranteur and/or safe harbour for the losing side. Rinse and repeat it.
It took 2 milleniums for the Germanic people to find a common ground to shake hands on; long long after Romans got vanished from the surface of the earth. Ottomans applied the similar strategum on the Balkans and here we have the term "Balkanisation".
If we want a brighter and more secure future for our selves this can only be achieved by insisting on friendship and mutual respect.
freza223@reddit
You're right, it's the same, only thing is the Romans followed through with conquest and then extraction, the US seems to have skipped the conquest part for now and went straight for extraction (controlling trade and resources). Which is just a fancy way of saying colonialism. And yeah cooperation would be the beneficial way forward for all.
Unfortunately, the dumbass leaders of my country seem to be in bed with the US and Israel. That, or they're trying to play both sides. Either way, I have a feeling this is going to blow up in our faces. Maybe literally.
Jediuzzaman@reddit
We can not put our trust on politicians since the political scene of all of these countries designed by the occupying force itself; left and right, as you pointed correctly.
That's why the war on Lebanon and Iran is precious; they are fighting for their survival, they seek to find a place for themselves in the global scene, but serving to shatter the very image of this scheming figures for us simultaneously.
freza223@reddit
This is what's been bothering me. This election cycle I voted pro-european and it seems that I got pro-US instead. The whole thing feels like it's been decided for us, whether we like it or not. Usually when something happens the politicians here shuffle their feet and try to see where the wind is blowing from before they make a decision. Not this time though.
Anyhow, if the US gets a bloodied nose and it's presence is diminished in the ME, then maybe Israel will be discouraged from messing around with Turkiye. What strange times we live in.

No large scale financial activity of sensitive/competetive/distrubing manner -> no point of supervision -> no point of having large arse military base acting as the superviser.
lejocko@reddit
That's bullshit. Firstly Germany is still the largest economy of the EU and no one is very close in passing it. Secondly that's not the reason the US is there, they came because of the cold war, and they stayed because they have the whole infrastructure there for staying their activities in Europe and Africa.

Kaminazuma@reddit
Germany is a knotpoint since it sits in the middle. Pulling out of Germany is just a bad strategic choice. It has nothing to do with the stagnant economy, which will probably spring back once Germans start thinking long term and not short term.
LibertyChecked28@reddit
It being in ''the middle land country'' means less and less for ever expanding naval superpower power that gets progressively more and more sophisticated as time goes on.
With Poland becoming a growing powerhouse, Finland joining Nato, and the ''Border of the West'' expanding to Ukraine (by proxy) it would be far cheaper to directly use the countries that have closer naval ports and strengthen Poland via the relocation of some former German assets, while investing heavily in Finland & post-war Ukraine, than to do the exact same but with Netherlands & Germany acting as the middle men and Kiev remaining ultimately logistically inconvenient due to the distance.
The ring forming from Romania, Poland, Finland, and Ukraine offers far superior strategic position for what the US has been tyring to accomplish than maintaining a large scale foothold in the western most parts of Europe in anticipation of the USSR steamrolling their way till France.
Not to mention neither UK nor Germany have the boom factor that can justify the sheer extend of US entrenchment there, those countries have naturally degrowed over time, and are bound to keep on naturally degrowing up until they reach the status of Spain.

I will say this, hate me if you want.
Some people want a United States of Europe more than we do. Why? Because, for them, it is easier to control everything with one government, rather than dealing with multiple countries and governments.
Take the example of Hungary. They have a bad leader who is against many things in the EU, and he is basically stopping actions we want to take, like supporting Ukraine or acting against Russia, right?
Basically, if we had a president of Europe and a single government, like Republicans or Democrats in the U.S., we might already be involved in a war with Iran. Why? Because it is easier to influence a centralized government than an entire population, right?
And trust me, everything happening with Trump is part of why some people think we need to be stronger. They see him as an example showing that unity can make a country stronger than ever, right? But what they don’t say is that if we unite, we might end up with leaders who make decisions that don’t represent everyone, especially in situations like supporting other countries in conflicts.
I am pro European Union, but I want a union that does not give full power to a single president. If we decide to go to war with a specific country, that decision should be made by the people, not just the government.

As a Pole i want to remove all US soldier from my country.
Few-Interview-1996@reddit
All for it.
SaraJuno@reddit
Wish he’d stop banging on about it and just do it. What’s that? The army doesn’t want to because those bases are actually beneficial? It’s all just bs to appease his baboon base?
Respond7840@reddit
Good, get the fuck out of Europe.
Rare_Opportunity2419@reddit
As much as I hate the stupid bastard, US bases in Lithuania, Romania and Poland are a better deterrent against the Russians than ones in Spain and Germany. However, give it a few hours or days, and Mr. Putin will call him and give him his instructions and then this will be off the table.
Thick_Cost_609@reddit
Those bases are not in danger of being closed down.
Strong_Remove_2976@reddit
So strengthening the Eastern Flank then?
Yes please, that’s what NATO wants from the US!

I hope all EU countries reconsider American presence.
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
I am very glad we never let them build a base here.
Parking-Code-4159@reddit
While there will certainly be economic disadvantages for the towns where the Americans were stationed, on the whole, how can you call it a punishment when an occupying power leave a country? Did the Poles or Germans saw it as a punishment after the Soviets closed their bases? Where's the difference?
Fun_Calendar_6444@reddit
They created an alliance to increase their power. And now this idiot wants to pull out of the very alliance that was meant to strengthen his own position. All because they did not support him in a war that was not decided by the alliance, but by him himself (or by his Jewish ally). His case is a clear example of how the power a country builds over decades can be destroyed in just a few years. And it is also a lesson in how, historically, great empires were ruined after a few bad leaders.
Imaginary-Life7261@reddit
after western europe is rather sore from bending over it's your turn. sorry to say. apparently trump is a russian asset and not genuinely interested in this treaty that's there for a reason.
Marakajin@reddit
Huh. You'd think we, of all people, would understand the concept of a Trojan Horse. Apparently not.
MinimumArt8781@reddit
I can't even.... I hate it, hate it. FCK!
KrunoOs@reddit
So he thinks he's punishing those countries that way? Good for them.
