I just looked it up to be sure. "Halv" means "Half". "Fem" is "five", and "Halvfems" is, as far as i can tell, a way to say "A half away from 5", as in, 4.5. "Sinds" means to multiply. We no longer say the "Sindstyvende" part, it has been shortened to just "Tooghalvfems". It all stems from an older numbering system, that was base 20 instead of base 10.
No one would ever say that and the other countries aren’t taken as literal. Then Sweden should be 9+10+2 for instance. No Dane knows what halvfems means if not just 90.
Denmark is like Germany. Still dumb, but not this retarded.
I don't remember French but Basque has a similar number system so I can describe that. There aren't specific words for 30, 40, 50, etc. Instead, you say x times 20 (and a number from 1 to 19) to get to those numbers.

Its the old way of saying it, tooghalvfemsindstyvende
slowamigo@reddit
two-half-five-and-twenty?
mads194h@reddit
sindstyvende means multiply by 20. Halvfems means "Take a half away from 5". so its basically "2 and 4.5x20"
slowamigo@reddit
cheers man. Could you break down Halvfemsinds into it's component words? just curious about the cognates

The most shameful aspect of Dutch history.

Danish. The Dutch have their own weird quirks but the Danes take it to a different level imo.

i mean, we still use halvanden, knowing thats 1.5
Jerk_offlane@reddit
Yea, but halvfems means 90.
mads194h@reddit
sure, i was just breaking down the etymology of the word, since you said it seemed like bait.
Jerk_offlane@reddit
Bait or knowingly misleading. Call it what you want. We say the numbers exactly like in Germany.
mads194h@reddit
i just took a closer look at the map, and you are right, they intentionally wrote it out more confusingly for us, my bad

10: hamar 20: hogei and: eta
30: hogeita amar (twentyand ten) 40: berrogei (twotwenty) 55: berrogeita hamabost (twotwentyand fifteen) 60: hirurogei (threetwenty) 92: laurogeita hamabi (fourtwentyand twelve)
I think it's kinda neat.
But french only does this with 80 and 90, they have words for all the numbers up till then.
