How old are you?
NegligentNarwhal@reddit
Lol I'm 31, I just said that because this "I'm a snake" video went super viral back in like 2010. It was EVERYWHERE
exhaustingpedantry@reddit
Oh nvm... I'm even older than you. :')
Rosaly8@reddit
Yeah I thought so, I think I was just busy with different things then because I'm 32š
FlyCurious8305@reddit
Lol. This video is older then yall think. I was in college with him when this video came out and I'm 39.

Ahhh so it's just making the rounds.

Seaweed's a good source of dietary iodine
PF_Nonsense@reddit (OP)
That's excellent news, I am unaware of any other sources of dietary iodine in my diet
donuttrackme@reddit
Most table salt is iodized. Unless you're buying the fancy kind.
thegoldengoober@reddit
That's actually becoming much less the case these days. People are forgetting why iodized assault exists in our overestimating how much iodine can be gotten in the average diet.Ā
People are focused on things like pink salt and sea salt, and chef personalities have actually been advocating for this stuff and against iodized salt.Ā
Heck, I've even seen recently in my workplace a bulk container of That umbrella girl salt that was explicitly not iodized. I didn't even know that brand existed without iodine.Ā
https://youtu.be/XRcwwZXJ8gk This is a good video going over at all. First part is about the history of iodized salt, but the rest of the video goes over what I was mentioning.Ā
KittenPurrs@reddit
I like flake salt (smaller sprinkle seems to go further), so that's what I keep in our salt cellar next to the stove. My partner has an iodine deficiency currently, so I just had to replace my flake with some good ol' fashioned "when it rains it pours" iodinized granular salt. We do eat a lot of seaweed which is iodine-rich, but apparently not enough to make up for skipping fortified salt. Honestly didn't see this one coming.
thegoldengoober@reddit
DANG, My diet is distinctly low on all iodine sources from food. So for a while I've only been getting what is in my daily supplement.Ā
I don't know if that's enough but since learning about this iodine stuff I've started adding seaweed to my foods, and snacking on it, hoping adding that seaweed would be enough. So it may not be? How did you learn your partner was low and iodine?Ā
KittenPurrs@reddit
Well, he developed a goiter. He didn't have any other symptoms, never felt off, but we noticed a bit of swelling on his neck. Took the doctor about three seconds to ask about our salt preferences. It was caught early enough that it doesn't require a treatment plan beyond "increase your iodine intake before this becomes a serious issue". So an easy step one was buying cheap iodinized salt.
Year3030@reddit
Well here is the rub. Kosher salt tastes WAY better. I know because I used to cook in a kitchen, that's all we used except for one recipe that called for table salt. I primarily use that in my own kitchen but keep the iodized around to use once in a while. I did look this up lately though and the research is that you are getting plenty of your iodine without using iodized salt at home, i.e. processed food.
If you aren't eating processed food though, that's something you should probably consider.
thegoldengoober@reddit
The video goes over taste, and blind taste tests show that the average person actually can't tell the difference. The presenter even goes through it herself in the video.Ā
And as for your mention of processed food, part of the problem with that is That people are/should be cutting down on processed food. So we either aren't or shouldn't be relying on that.Ā
But I also looked that up, and I read that there's no standard on whether or not companies use iodized or plain salt. So unless the label distinctly says "iodized salt", which processed foods generally don't say, then we actually don't know that's what they're using, and if plain salt is cheaper for them then that's certainly what they're using.
So I would be interested in having a source that says otherwise, and why.Ā
donuttrackme@reddit
Yeah, and there's been an increase in mild to moderate iodine deficiency in countries like the US, UK, Australia and other high income nations since. Too bad people don't like listening to scientists and instead listen to chefs and influencers for dietary advice.
vectorology@reddit
Not in the UK at least. Iām not sure adding iodine is common elsewhere.
donuttrackme@reddit
Hate to break it to you but the UK are the outliers. An estimated 90% of the global population uses iodized salt. 120 countries have mandatory iodized salt legislation.
vectorology@reddit
Yeah, thatās why I said in theory iodine deficiency shouldnāt be an issue. Iāve wondered if it actually was and have looked into how I should get tested as part of my usual iron/B12/VitD screen. I wouldnāt mind it if they did fortify salt, as they are starting to do with folate and white bread.
vectorology@reddit
Cool. I think the idea here is that iodine is pretty common in the local food supply so in theory deficiency is less of an issue.
Kitsunemitsu@reddit
Hey! From Canada. We have Iodized salt. Iodine is also added to our sea salt
weirdoldhobo1978@reddit
It can be hard to tell because many of the symptoms of iodine deficiency overlap with the symptoms of life just kind of sucking (Fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, depression, etc)
Taolan13@reddit
So many nutritional deficiencies have that symptom list.
Makes you wonder if a big reason life sucks is improper nutrition.

You'd be very surprised. Unless you're eating super healthy and exercising outdoors regularly, pretty much every adult is nutrient deficient. Should probably be taking a multivitamin, vitamin d, baby aspirin, and probably a calcium supplement (and b complex if you drink) daily. Won't instantly make you healthier or happier, but it'll help avoid health problems when you're older.
lostbutnotgone@reddit
My family finds it hilarious that I live in Florida and am vitamin D deficient. Excuse you, the sun here is hot why would I go outside?
Year3030@reddit
I'm really pale due to my heritage. I lived in Florida for a year, somehow all my friends were also pale and we would hang out at night.
Year3030@reddit
I just started weight loss again which is hardcore for me. Lean meats some low carb veggies and not enough calories. I drink flavored electrolyte water, two liters a day and take vitamins etc. Probably I haven't been this well hydrated and stacked with nutrients in a while lol. The irony of course is that I'm not getting enough calories. Just gotta remember this after the diet.

No_Opposite1807@reddit
Go out and buy some of theese multi vitamin pills.
Take them for 3 or 4 days one in the morning and one late afternoon.
You cant overdose on them since the vitamins in them are peed out if consumed too much.
Try adding some fish to you died like salmon.
Try to monitor your water intake and electrolytes the color test workes pretty solidly for that.
streeetmeats@reddit
Not all vitamins are peed out Jesus Christ this is dangerous advice. Multivitamins usually contain vitamins that you 100% can overdose on or at the very least damage your organs. Do not take more than the daily value. At best youāre just wasting your money since youāre peeing out the excess water soluble vitamins and theyāre not doing anything. At worst you are damaging your kidneys and shit with excessive amounts or non water soluble vitamins. A single extra gummy wonāt do much but regularly quadrupling your dose (serving sizes for multivitamins are usually 2 pills/gummies) is not good for you and is just a waste of money too
