Anon's post seems to be founded on the idea, that you can't drink alcohol for just a glass or small amount and leave it at that, but instead you have to drink one whole bottle.
Unironically I do not understand the appeal of alcohol, weed, cigarettes/vaping/etc, all that. Coffee, fine. It's stupid, but at least it does technically help without "major" side effects. I don't understand people who drink.
…have you done any of them? The simple answer is it helps as a social lubricant, making you more impulsive and less introverted. If you drink by yourself without anyone around then yeah I agree it kind of sucks. But if you want to go to a new place and try to make friends or get laid the easiest cheat code is alcohol.
meth is also great for that. i mean, if you havent done meth have you even had fun?? it really helps as a social lubricant, making you more impulsive and less introverted. you can get laid 20 times in a few hours with no breaks, and it only makes all of your teeth fall out. if you want to make new friends or get laid the easiest cheat code is meth.
Yes, alcohol is the same as meth. Zero differences, they do the same thing and have the same effects except meth is even better, obviously. Don’t know why you’re bothering to mention this, everyone takes it, my grandma just gave me a bump on easter.
You can also enjoy it by yourself if you make it fun. I have pretty good times making myself a cocktail I paired with a nicer meal I cooked myself. It's all in the mindset, if alcohol is a poison to you and nothing else, you'll probably never enjoy it, but it's really more than just a poison.
The sum of all ABV percentages would surely be well over a hundred, yes. You don't even need to drink a whole lot for that to be the case; rather, you would need to have drunk a rather small amount of rather weak alcohol to have a chance of it, which is of course what he was using it to convey.
I have never had any liquor in my life. I have had some amount of ciders, half a beer and half a glass of wine because I decided I couldn’t stand the taste of either as I was drinking them.
Yeah I get it now, but it's still a weird way to measure how much alcohol you've had in your life. You've had like less than lets say 20 beer/ciders so you haven't "equalled" to 100 percent. I get it, but it's also still not at all how percentages work and it's a very autistic way of thinking
Not the first time I've been called that. Won't be the last. Sex is for lovers, not hookups; drugs (including alcohol and coffee and weed) are bad and nobody should use them. Call me what you will, but I find joy in other ways.

Forgive me for being logical (god knows redditors tend to hate when I do that), but why not get a punching bag or talk to a friend or go for a run instead?
Because nothing you can do without using drugs will have anywhere near the impact on your brain and how you feel as what drugs will. Ultimately, just about everyone can handle some amount of substance use (especially something like occasional drinking) without any major issues coming from it. Not to mention that there's something about the social experience of doing the same substance as your friends so you feel the same way as them throughout a night, and all going out and hanging out and feeling good and having a good time.
You can say that you can have fun doing other things, but that's like saying "I don't understand why people eat a wide variety of food when I'm satisfied with eating burgers every day". There are experiences that you will never have if you don't drink, and there are a lot more experiences you will never have if you don't do any other drugs. A lot of people are willing to accept risk for the sake of experiencing more of what there is to experience in life, and just because you don't care about that doesn't mean lots of people don't.
Personally alcohol genuinely played a big role in my personal development, helped break the ice with people when I was really socially awkward who I ended up talking to while sober afterwards and befriending, and led to tons of social experiences that wouldn't have happened otherwise, not because I needed to have lower inhibitions or be drunk necessarily, but because those experiences only really happen during a night of going out and drinking.
It's totally fine to be sober and I'll never judge anyone for not wanting to do anything, but when people start talking about how they don't get why people do x because they can just do y instead it just really reeks of 1. not understanding what substances actually do or feel like at all, even conceptually, and 2. there's this sense of under the breath judgment towards people who do substances, as if they think they're better for not taking risks without understanding the benefits at all
Things like "going for a run" are long term solutions and might ignore circumstances and disabilities that make those things difficult in the first place.
All the above things work immediately - you can do these things and relieve anxiety in seconds.
Essentially you're thinking logically about things that are emotional. It won't compute.
Because it’s logical to take something to relieve anxiety before going into a social situation to try to make a friend? The alternative I guess is to cry into a pillow and be lonely.
I'm with you. I have people in my life with severe mental issues and I cannot imagine having the gift of not being in that state, and choosing to take something that will bring me to that state.
But to put it basically, they are shortcuts for things that can be achieved with time and dedication, and then they become habit, then reliance.
The thing about weed is that it literally alters how much dopamine is being released by all these things. The music might sound good to you normally, but while you're high off weed, you will literally get lost in how the beat feels and how the melody moves.
Your food might taste better with salt, but on weed, even a shitty oven pizza will become a 5-star meal and the best thing you've ever had. Sugar and salt light up your brain like crazy normally already, and with weed in your system a cookie might genuinely give you the same pleasure as an orgasm does normally.
Everything becoming hilarious is very much an EVERYTHING becomes hilarious. I remember being high with a buddy of mine and watching a "if you laugh, you restart the video" type of video, and we had to restart over and over for 45 minutes straight, and never made it past minute 2 (out of like 20). It was an amazing workout for my abs that day as well.
And if you're having sex or jacking off on weed, that is genuinely a high that you can't reproduce sober.
I get that you say it doesn't hold any appeal to you, and that is absolutely fair and valid, but what you are writing here is very much indicative of not having experienced the effects of weed (which again, is fair). Probably also why you are getting downvoted on this comment.
(Double responding btw, sorry for spamming your inbox. Just want to respond here, in case anyone else thinks like you and stumbles upon this thread.)
I mean it does come off as holier than thou because you asked what the appeal was of these substances then you basically just said you don't need them to have a good time. Obviously you don't need to drink to enjoy social gatherings but for a more introverted person it can help. You don't need to smoke weed to enjoy a movie, but maybe you want to rewatch one of your old favorites while in a different headspace.
You don't need a car to get you where you need to go but it sure does get you there faster than walking.
A drink every now and then helps me relax and sleep more soundly. I asked a former smoker friend about nicotine, and apparently it's also very relaxing. I know weed mellows a lot of folks out.
Basically, they're all ways to calm the brain temporarily.
Alcohol is called social lubricant for a reason. As someone who has had issues socializing and being shy, alcohol really helps reduce those inhibitions and genuinely makes large social gathers a lot more enjoyable. It also is a depressant so it typically makes me overthink things less. Also it can make a boring or unenjoyable task a little more fun. It's a slippery slope though because too much will cause a bad time.
I'm less experienced with weed, but I still enjoy it. It makes me relaxed and chill most of the time. It is also one of those things that makes a boring task a little less boring. Helps if I can't sleep too.
I do not get the appeal of vaping or cigarettes either though.
While I agree on all of that, especially the cigarette one, with the alcohol is a weird one, I really like sometimes drinking something good, a good wine, beer or some more alcoholic stuff. Just 2-3 of day at week it's fine imho.
Like all the things, it's good if you do it in moderation. Would be ironic if OP hates all of that but drinks a entire bottle of cola every times he eats.
Real. I mean, I haven't touched alcohol or coffee in years, and I've never done anything "harder" than that. Sugar's my main vice, almost exclusively in the form of carbs, so I'm not "drug-free", depending on your definition.
I just don't see the point. Why start using drugs of any kind if you don't have to?
To maybe shine a light on that last question, here's my reasoning(s):
Alcohol I tried because I was a teenager and it was part of the "growing up" experience. It's a great social lubricant, but by no means required to have a good time at a party or in the club, so it's been toned down to once or twice a month for me. I also really dislike the taste of alcohol though, and have a decently high tolerance, so it's mostly a waste of money if I don't wish to actually spend some.
Weed can be a nice drug to help elevate certain experiences where you release decently high amounts of dopamine. Hanging out with friends, watching stupid videos/movies, jacking off - all of those just feel better with a slight weed buzz. Again, absolutely not required, but nice to take the edge off, if you have a particularly stressful month at work (consumption rate for me is at like 2-3 times a year).
Uppers like Amphetamines or Cocaine just boost your confidence and general mood as far as I'm aware, so you feel better about whatever you're doing. Wide spread in the sales industry because of those effects. And I guess also among cooks, since it lets you shrug off stress very well. It doesn't speak to me personally, but I can see how it appeals to other people. (Also worth noting that ADHD meds often include some sort of amphetamines, so there's a non-zero chance someone who takes Speed regularly might be self-medicating their ADHD)
Harder drugs are a little more interesting. They have a decently high barrier to entry (rightfully so) because of their reputations, but the effects are absolutely impossible to reproduce without the drugs:
MDMA for example will put you in a state of wholesome appreciation and euphoria that you just cannot experience without it. A shitty party that you weren't looking forward to is going to be a great social event, and all of a sudden everyone is your friend and you love them. You'll also have a lot of energy that you didn't have beforehand, and it's virtually impossible to be depressed while rolling (since the drug effectively hypercharges your serotonin system). I haven't taken any in 2 years, but when I first took it, it genuinely turned a night out I wasn't sure about into the best night of my life up until then. (I tried it just for the sake of trying it btw)
LSD and other psychedelics you'll mostly only take for the sake of exploring how they feel and how your perception of self changes after taking them. Personally I feel it's somewhat close to MDMA in its euphoric effect, but you also lose the ability to properly judge reality - depending on your state of mind that could either be very fun or incredibly distressing. For my first trip I was convinced for 6h that I was stuck in a film set, and everything that happened was following a set script. In a weird way, that was a very liberating experience. It's definitely a "take it just because you want to experience it" drug though, so if you don't see the appeal in just expanding your mind like that, you won't ever be convinced.
Last big category would probably be opioids (Heroin, Fentanyl, Oxy). From what I've heard, taking an opioid is literally just turning off all the negative feelings and worries you have for as long as you are tripping. Allegedly Heroin is the best feeling you can experience, and that exact reason is why so many people end up addicted to it. I do think there's some value in trying it once, but probably only once my life is basically over already. The risk of ruining your life with these drugs (including opioid pain killers btw) on accident is just way too high for me personally.
im 24 and went 23 years without anything at all, not even coffee or a red bull or anything, no drugs no nothing. this year i started smoking cigs and drinking quite regularly, ill have a drink every day, and i do coke on the weekends at the club or addderall if i cant get coke. i have chronic depression, and while i would not say i am depressed quite right now, i am at a low point in my life, even tho my mind is still good, its not as dark as it has been in past spells. i turned to drugs this year due to moving out and being out of school and finally being able to truly afford to not give a fuck about myself. i used to have a lot of people who depended on me and i graduated in chemistry from uni. i was going to grad school but Trump cut funding and so i like to jokingly tell my friends (who have very obviously noticed the change) that my substance abuse is Trump's fault.
in all honesty tho i now understand the "appeal" of some of these things. while alcohol is still quite disgusting to me, after a while you learn to tolerate it and even find drinks you can "like". coke wakes me up and gets me very alert, but the coming down is awful and thats why i dont do it often. adderall is the same, but less of a doom-ish "coming down", however the side effects are much more noticeable. smoking cigs is again something you can "tolerate" once your throat gets used to it. as for vaping, it does feel quite nice to get loopy, and it is "healthier" than smoking, but i instantly get dizzy off one hit.
all in all i think i am in a phase right now where unfortunately, i no longer have major duties or things that require me to be clean and focused, and i have resorted to doing these things as a distraction from the life i have lost, in many aspects aside from my studies. it is unfortunate because i have realized now, in the most absolute sense, that i have no self-worth. take away obligations and requirements, and i have collapsed into a state of despair, one where i see no reason to care for myself.
i do not think this will be a long term phase. so i will one day, hopefully soon, stop using these things. bc while i have gained perspective, i do not enjoy any of this at all. so, yeah, i dont know how people do these things out of enjoyment
Please stop doing coke. There are plenty of other stimulants you can do at a club that aren’t clear paths leading to self destruction. Try acid or molly or anything that’s not an opiod that will fuck with your brain chemistry to maybe chip at the depression. Much love and I hope tomorrow brings you more joy than today.
It’s just fun. If it’s not your kind of fun that’s cool but it’s a good time for me. It’s when you begin relying on it for emotional support or doing it every day it becomes a problem. Drinking socially is just a good time if it’s in your comfort zone
Same here. A nice glass of wine can improve the taste of a good meal, like a steak or pasta. But pounding vodka or something similar on its own… brrr.
Quality coffee is different, there’s lots of flavors and nuances to it, especially if you have it at a nice place (eg botanical garden), or you’ve got a ritual making it yourself. But the stuff from Starbucks or similar is garbage, McDonald’s of coffee, with the syrups and caramel being the equivalent of ketchup - making something completely unacceptable taste somewhat palatable or even addicting.
Regarding your coffee example, the same thing can be said for alcohol. Cheap vodka is gonna be shit, but get yourself a nice bottle of scotch to sip on and enjoy and it’s a different story, it’s not for everyone but I can understand why some people like it.
Binge drinking is the result of trying to chase what I call "the buzz".
See when you drink there is really nice point at around your 3rd drink where you ain't drunk but you ain't straight, where you feel dynamic, funny, where the noise in the bar is a background roar and you and your friends or loved ones are just vibing away at the same frequency having a great time.
And what do when we get to that point, well we don't want it to stop so we reach for another drink, in a poorly thought out attempt to maintain that buzz. The problem is by the 5th or 6th drink within say 2-3hrs things start to get messy and all semblance of self control is falling out of ghe window as you and your friend/s, who have roughly maintained drink parity go down the ladder of drunk to messy.
At this point you either jump off and stop or go into free fall. Where your 10th drink comes and goes. And the night becomes a blur.
In your teens of drinks you either run out of money, grog, night or ability to keep drinking. However if that last criteria is not meet this is where the night becomes a blackout, where you get to the last rung in the ladder, the danger zone.
This is where you're getting to dangerous levels of alcohol poisoning, or where you're doing incredibly dangerous behaviours (like behind the wheel) or awful things are being done to you. Black out is all but assured as is property damage.
All this because you wanted to chase that buzz that you reached on your 2nd - 3rd drink.
I find a similar construct applies to many other drugs like opiates, coke, amphetamines, cannabis, nitrous, nutmeg, MDMA etc where there is sweet zone that you reach the greatest effect but where taking more results in diminishing returbs against far worse effects be it social, physiological, psychological, economic or legality (like the amount of gear I've seen some people pack coz of their chasing the dragon puts them well into commercial quantities range).
Tf are you talking about, maintaining a good buzz is easy as hell. If you can’t drink without going until you black out there’s a much bigger issue at play.
As a former heavy drinker (little over 3.5 years sober) who has worked as a server for many years, I drank because I was too sociable for too long during the day.
Being sociable for hours and hours on end gets draining.
The issue is you made your first comment sound wrong. You made it sound like you drank so that you became less sociable, instead of implying you drank after your shift because being sociable was mentally taxing.
Reddit being Reddit as always. Downvoting because you spoke the truth. I have plenty of fun with my friends just doing shit together. Getting drunk together is for special occasions.
My dad is an alcoholic and he would literally die if he were to ever go sober without medical attention. He can barely function mentally, and is a fucking mess at the end of the day. Alcohol is fucking poison and im tired of people acting like its not.
I don’t drink anymore but when I did it would just wipe my anxiety away, make me laugh and have fun and yeah actually would help get me laid accident without even trying.
Closest thing I heard of would probably be Bombe. A drug made from catalytic converters (popped up in Congo first afaik), that effectively just stops your consciousness from existing for a few hours. With alcohol you very much still have a sense of self while drunk, unless you're black-out drunk (in which case no dopamine or serotonin).
Good liquor and bourbon run really expensive. But the bottles you get can last for a really long time if you only drink occasionally. $85 sounds right for something I would want to sit back and enjoy rather than just getting shitfaced.
Let me introduce you to my friend Ezra Brooks. Ezra, meet Atiklyar. You two should get to know each other. Now, Atiklar, be a good boy and put Ezra in your mouth. Remember, good boys swallow.
This is the least true thing I've ever seen on the internet. There are essentially infinite bourbon (and scotch, and irish and japanese I'm sure but not as knowledgeable on those) options sub $50 that are all quite good. Beyond that price point is pretty diminishing returns usually. Anything over $100ish is maybe a few % better than something $50
no the fuck they don't, you can get really good liquor at any price point, sure more of the $85 bottles are better than most of the $20 bottles, but the only whiskey I'll drink is $20 and the point of diminished returns is $50 for any bottle
I said diminished, not diminishing, I meant what I said
You can get some real good bottles for $50 but there is a lot of phenomenal stuff beyond that price range. Calling it diminishing returns is untrue imo.
You're being downvoted but this has been proven time and time again with blind taste tests in wine. Not sure about Scotch or Whiskey but my go to is crown and coke, so I don't throw down big money for bottles either.
Liquor = liquor. It’s all poison. Paying more so you can poison yourself with stuff that tastes better is certainly a choice, but trying to justify it is still among the most pathetic things I can imagine.
I prefer to drink out of the toilet, doesn't mean I'm allowed to run into the street and start screeching about why normies love the water machine at work.
Meanwhile, anon take 10-20 ''absolutely essential supplements'' with a pill routine worse than in a retirement home, eat ''clean'' with zero fibers and carbs and shittons of saturated animal fat and even take ''absolutely not dangerous'' SARMs, roids and GL1-P agonists synthetized in some basement in Shenzen or Minsk
I smoke weed and have a distaste towards alcohol ever since, one guy once told me I'm disgusting and I should buy expensive liquor as that gives you a "good drunk". Nah, I'll stick to my boof which actually helps me and doesn't turn me into a degenerate
I know people that have for real spent $3,000 going out drinking. You could get a pretty good vacation with that money but for some reason people prefer to spend it shouting over loud music and buying people drinks for people who they'll never see again.
Take a couple shots and you'll open up more for better or worse. Depends on how much of a loser anon is. I took two shots before every presentation and speech in college.
Because they have been brainwashed that all the good drugs kill them as soon as they enter their body, so they have to rely on the most stupid drug of all to forget about the world a little bit.
I already had issues remembering things due to chronic sleep loss. I don't get hangovers because I drink water too. But I drink a lit because I like being able to set my brain to 70% after work. Can't do it normally.
Wtf lol I drink like pretty often but I’ve only gotten blackout drunk (“anterograde amnesia”) like a single handful of times. If that happens on the reg for someone they either are binging way too fucking much or have something else seriously bad happening.
You all are so autistic. Obviously you can have fun without alcohol, but if you have never gotten shitfaced with your friends, then what are you even doing with your life? Enjoy it for once.
It reduces your social anxiety, gives you freedom from your hyperfocus and for few hours you can actually forget about all that shit out there that's causing so much stress that slowly die from it
Yeah the studies are in, and it's slow poison. Do it enough and it can cause cancer and heart disease, which can kill you.
recent research shows no safe level of alcohol
That's why I don't drink much anymore. I had my fun college days with friends but we had to study a lot so we rarely drank at home. There was no such thing as being drunk all the time.
For a while I was home brewing but that's dangerous because you've always got a gallon or two fermenting, then when that one is ready and then emptied you refill and start again, so you never really know how much you're imbibing. It's a fun hobby but don't
Because rum and rye are delicious. And so is Chartreuse and amari and Gamay and Last Words and spicy Margaritas and bubbles and sherry and Lillet Blanc and Trinidad Sours and Daiquiris.

I have an extensive sense of humor, so I'm lucky in that I can find a lot of things funny.
I have an extensive sense of music, so I'm lucky in that I can jazz to most genres.
Salt!
It comes off as holier-than-thou but I swear it's true. If you seek beauty in daily life, you will find it!
Doomie_bloomers@reddit
TheMorbidHobo@reddit
Does that not mean that normality becomes stale by comparison if not dopamine insensitivity?
MasterEditorJake@reddit
I mean it does come off as holier than thou because you asked what the appeal was of these substances then you basically just said you don't need them to have a good time. Obviously you don't need to drink to enjoy social gatherings but for a more introverted person it can help. You don't need to smoke weed to enjoy a movie, but maybe you want to rewatch one of your old favorites while in a different headspace.
You don't need a car to get you where you need to go but it sure does get you there faster than walking.
Wanderlusxt@reddit
I always seek beauty in my life but I can never seem to grasp it
ExoTheFlyingFish@reddit
You'll get there, man. I promise. It gets better, even if it's hard.
Yeseylon@reddit
A drink every now and then helps me relax and sleep more soundly. I asked a former smoker friend about nicotine, and apparently it's also very relaxing. I know weed mellows a lot of folks out.
Basically, they're all ways to calm the brain temporarily.
MasterEditorJake@reddit
That's just my experience though.
Neutron_Starrr@reddit
While I agree on all of that, especially the cigarette one, with the alcohol is a weird one, I really like sometimes drinking something good, a good wine, beer or some more alcoholic stuff. Just 2-3 of day at week it's fine imho.
Like all the things, it's good if you do it in moderation. Would be ironic if OP hates all of that but drinks a entire bottle of cola every times he eats.
ExoTheFlyingFish@reddit
Doomie_bloomers@reddit
The risk of ruining your life with these drugs (including opioid pain killers btw) on accident is just way too high for me personally.
jonatnr819@reddit
im 24 and went 23 years without anything at all, not even coffee or a red bull or anything, no drugs no nothing. this year i started smoking cigs and drinking quite regularly, ill have a drink every day, and i do coke on the weekends at the club or addderall if i cant get coke. i have chronic depression, and while i would not say i am depressed quite right now, i am at a low point in my life, even tho my mind is still good, its not as dark as it has been in past spells. i turned to drugs this year due to moving out and being out of school and finally being able to truly afford to not give a fuck about myself. i used to have a lot of people who depended on me and i graduated in chemistry from uni. i was going to grad school but Trump cut funding and so i like to jokingly tell my friends (who have very obviously noticed the change) that my substance abuse is Trump's fault.
in all honesty tho i now understand the "appeal" of some of these things. while alcohol is still quite disgusting to me, after a while you learn to tolerate it and even find drinks you can "like". coke wakes me up and gets me very alert, but the coming down is awful and thats why i dont do it often. adderall is the same, but less of a doom-ish "coming down", however the side effects are much more noticeable. smoking cigs is again something you can "tolerate" once your throat gets used to it. as for vaping, it does feel quite nice to get loopy, and it is "healthier" than smoking, but i instantly get dizzy off one hit.
all in all i think i am in a phase right now where unfortunately, i no longer have major duties or things that require me to be clean and focused, and i have resorted to doing these things as a distraction from the life i have lost, in many aspects aside from my studies. it is unfortunate because i have realized now, in the most absolute sense, that i have no self-worth. take away obligations and requirements, and i have collapsed into a state of despair, one where i see no reason to care for myself.
i do not think this will be a long term phase. so i will one day, hopefully soon, stop using these things. bc while i have gained perspective, i do not enjoy any of this at all. so, yeah, i dont know how people do these things out of enjoyment
grathepic@reddit
Please stop doing coke. There are plenty of other stimulants you can do at a club that aren’t clear paths leading to self destruction. Try acid or molly or anything that’s not an opiod that will fuck with your brain chemistry to maybe chip at the depression. Much love and I hope tomorrow brings you more joy than today.
jonatnr819@reddit
thank you!
OhFrickMyGuy@reddit
It’s just fun. If it’s not your kind of fun that’s cool but it’s a good time for me. It’s when you begin relying on it for emotional support or doing it every day it becomes a problem. Drinking socially is just a good time if it’s in your comfort zone
Middle-Fuel-6402@reddit
Doo-Doo-G@reddit
Regarding your coffee example, the same thing can be said for alcohol. Cheap vodka is gonna be shit, but get yourself a nice bottle of scotch to sip on and enjoy and it’s a different story, it’s not for everyone but I can understand why some people like it.
SleeplessInPlano@reddit
Did anon try sipping a small amount slowly over a few hours?
verbmegoinghere@reddit
All coz we wanted to maintain a never ending buzz
RangerRobbins@reddit
Tf are you talking about, maintaining a good buzz is easy as hell. If you can’t drink without going until you black out there’s a much bigger issue at play.

As a former heavy drinker (little over 3.5 years sober) who has worked as a server for many years, I drank because I was too sociable for too long during the day.
Being sociable for hours and hours on end gets draining.

awkward__pickle@reddit
This is the least true thing I've ever seen on the internet. There are essentially infinite bourbon (and scotch, and irish and japanese I'm sure but not as knowledgeable on those) options sub $50 that are all quite good. Beyond that price point is pretty diminishing returns usually. Anything over $100ish is maybe a few % better than something $50
baddieslovebadideas@reddit
no the fuck they don't, you can get really good liquor at any price point, sure more of the $85 bottles are better than most of the $20 bottles, but the only whiskey I'll drink is $20 and the point of diminished returns is $50 for any bottle
