Flying overtop DFW Airport

DFW’s scale never ceases to amaze me. Occasionally when I need to fly across the metroplex I’ll be granted permission to go over top DFW which gives me these views…

Have to pay a toll to leave the airport. That was wild
spacedman_spiff@reddit
People here are so normalized to the notion of tolls they don’t realize how weird it is to pay to go to the airport. Or Frisco.
HeadAche2012@reddit
I'm pretty sure it's to prevent it becoming a rush hour stand still for people not even going to the airport
Partridge_PearTree@reddit
Try driving anywhere in NY. Texas is nothing compared to it.
HeadAche2012@reddit
Yeah, when I did the run on the runway thing I was kind of shocked that it's mostly a big field. Which makes sense, as it's an airport with runways. But from the inside the main roads, gates, terminals, shops, security, etc it feels like a giant shopping mall inside.
magicwombat5@reddit
That is some special clearance. Whoo-ee.
Radixx@reddit
Is it special? A friend flew us to Stephenville for BBQ and was granted a flyover without any issues. This was awhile ago so it might be more difficult now.

A classic GA trip to the Hard Eight 😉
You typically need to specifically request it, and DFW needs to be in South Flow for it to work out. And, you better be listening up and on point with the controllers, they issue a lot of headings and altitude assignments and expect you to be paying attention. The workload can be pretty high ….
Radixx@reddit
Thanks for the info. I was pretty surprised when he requested it and was granted right away. It was at night and very cool.

Its own zip code, police, and fire. Second largest airport in the US. It's basically a small city with runways. DFW Airport, TX.
Best airport I've ever been in terms of efficiency, both foot traffic and transportation logistics.
Nice shot, man. Thanks for sharing!!
Dedwards_est_22@reddit
Does that make it downtown DFW /j

Honestly I wish downtown Dallas was designed/planned half as well as DFW airport.
spacedman_spiff@reddit
In what ways
rare_with_hair@reddit
It's own municipality too. It has its own inspectors for MEP/ construction. They are fairly tough as well
ExcellentSet4912@reddit
The second busiest airport in the US in terms of passenger volume
spacedman_spiff@reddit
And this dude got clearance to fly through. Wild.
radioref@reddit (OP)
Technically I flew “over” the airport. I was above all the airport’s traffic, even at only 3500 feet
nowherenoonenobody@reddit
World.
ExcellentSet4912@reddit
DFW is the third busiest in the world behind Dubai at #1 and Atlanta at #2
w6750@reddit
Yep 2nd to Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta
ExcellentSet4912@reddit
Yep
Mindful_Rager@reddit
That’s an impressive view. Question though: why does it look like it’s been in a desert? I have been to that airport a lot and I don’t remember the concrete being that shade of tan….? Or am I seeing things?
HolyAssertion@reddit
The tinting on his side window
Mindful_Rager@reddit
Another dumb question: are small plane tints a reddish color and not like a black tone? Never been in one. My other thought was the way the sun was hitting the concrete but the view out the front wasn’t reddish/tan.
burningfudge01@reddit
It’s crazy how DFW is bigger than Manhattan
street593@reddit
That that crazy considering we build horizontally instead of vertically.
EreshkigalKish2@reddit
I love it. DFW is in my top 5 favorite airports
JohnPaulDavyJones@reddit
Lmao you managed to get both my home in the first couple seconds of the shot, and then I work in one of the towers centered in that zoom-in on Irving.
There's like a 99% chance you got me in this video, unless it was taken between 5:05 and 5:30 or on the weekend.
CPLCraft@reddit
It always looks so much smaller from the sky, doesn’t it.
GymnasticSclerosis@reddit
Crazy that Denver International is almost twice the size of this huge airport. 33,531 vs 17,207 acres.
guitar_vigilante@reddit
Most of that is empty space though. DFW in a little over half the space has one more runway and the same number of terminals.
GymnasticSclerosis@reddit
Yeah it’s ridiculously large. I wasn’t singing its praises; I much prefer DFWs layout. It’s just the relative size is crazy.
Not sure why the orgy of downvotes 😂
spacedman_spiff@reddit
Denver bad. DFW good.
ArmWarm8743@reddit
Everything about Denver’s airport is terrible.
_stuxnet@reddit
LAX is only a fifth the size of DFW Airport. LaGuardia Airport fits inside DFW's parking lots!
DragonChowhound@reddit
so much brown and ugly
yourfutureboss88@reddit
Want rainbow-colored runways?
spacedman_spiff@reddit
Actually yes.
anonymousguy11234@reddit
That would be kind of dope.
mariotx10@reddit
Would it look better if the runways were white?
Acceptable_Advice463@reddit
Why’s it so sandy
Current_Employer_308@reddit
Its supposed to be concrete colored, but the pollen is a little bad this year
Crazy_Ad_91@reddit
And to think Love Field was supposed to be the be all, end all of airports for Dallas/Texas as a whole at one point in time.
Dr_AkilesPiko562@reddit
I can see my jobsite from here.
Thin-Constant-4018@reddit
Nice airport (especially really good TSA), just wish TerminalLink was faster
GullibleBiscotti@reddit
Is F ready?
ShelbyDriver@reddit
Cool! I got to do that at night about a year ago. Super cool!
TBB09@reddit
Wow, such color
Electronic-Return737@reddit
Nice view
