Why is there a constant Turkish-Greek feud in this sub?

We are those red and blue houses together in the neighborhood from Gnomeo and Juliette
seanugengar@reddit
Imagine this parallel reality:
Greece and Turkiye are exceptional allies. Aligned despite cultural differences. 2 nations that are standing geographically at the bridge connecting east and west. Allowing easy control over airspace and the water passages from the Black sea, all the way to Italy, Libya and the Suez canal. As well as, the trade routes from the Balkan peninsula, until Iran. Two neighboring nations, with massive geostrategic power....
We wouldn't want that, right??? We want smaller nations to be easily controlled. So? What do we do? Divide, spread division and maintain animosity. How are you doing that? Well there is no better way than Nationalism and Religious fundamentalism.
What you see in this sub, is the biproduct of that...
SituationRoyal6535@reddit
Yeah because nobody wants two NATO countries to get along.

Yeah, once we were. Sadly, it lasted for a few thousand years and then things happened for the benefit of … (this part is for not to be banned by the owner of the Reddit).
Glittering-Most-4124@reddit
Also, I think politicians would rather fearmonger so that people follow them blindly instead of focusing on their own country. They would rather steal more in a weak country than live in a strong one where they cannot steal. I think this is one of the reasons for their fearmongering. I don’t believe even the most nationalistic-presenting ones care about anything but money.
As an example, Devlet Bahçeli, who is the leader of the Turkish nationalist party, even called Abdullah Öcalan—the founder of the PKK, responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent Turkish people—“kurucu önder,” which means “founding father” in Turkish, but in a more glorified sense.
Also, I think that while there are cultural differences, Greek and Turkish cultures are about as close as two unrelated cultures can be. There are shared instruments, shared dances, shared fashion, and shared foods. That’s what makes nationalism even more tragic.
MardukPainkiller@reddit
I mean, from the time I was a child, it was always in the news, the Turks are gonna attack any day now.
It's all about control. I suspect the same is happening there.

Yes because America is the one fueling the hate between these two countries, it has nothing to do with people living in those countries
Itsgxl@reddit
Im %100 with you on your analysis but the hatred doesn't really translate into real life and more limited to online interactions. I've been to Greece more than 10 times, I was constantly treated with freebies and getting dinner invitations left and right but same thing applies other way around. Visit Turkye if you get a chance, you'll see what i mekan.
seanugengar@reddit
It's because the majority of people have nothing to divide them and as you say I am 100% sure I will be treated the same way as you! I have been in Istanbul when I was really young and it is in my, near future, plans to visit Antalya.
As for Reddit... Kardeşim, this platform, like the rest of the internet has turned into a hate spewing dumpster.

munchmills@reddit
They dont eat them for breakfast though.
puzzledpanther@reddit
Olives, dried rusk and cheese is a pretty common breakfast for us.
munchmills@reddit
I'm sure there are people who do. I was talking generally. For many greeks it's weird to serve olives for breakfast. You'd rather see it getting served for dinner. In turkey it's the opposite. Again, generally speaking.
puzzledpanther@reddit
Maybe it's not common in some households because of daily routine and so many choices... but it would never be weird. Maybe in Athens it would be less common?... in Crete it's very common and a lot of Cretans have and make their own olives... there's quite a few different ways.
We always have three different varieties of olives that we make our own and keep throught the year.
You mean you only have them for breakfast?
Also I'm sure olives aren't as popular in the East as they are on the mediterranean coasts of Turkey.
munchmills@reddit
In Turkey it's more common to have them for breakfast and not for dinner (in general).
Cretans are not normal greeks 😁 they see themselves as "special greeks" which is understandable, but my point is that they are not represent Greeces general public id say.
I'm quite sure that olives are popular throughout Turkey. As they are also popular in the whole region (Syria, Iraq, Iran, etc.)
puzzledpanther@reddit
In Greece they are most common to have for lunch/dinner. Either incluided in salad or seperate dish.
I think Peloponese region is similar but Crete is indeed olive land.
It's just that it's an easy tree to grow in our climate and mountainous island, so they are very common. Maybe also our dietary habbits are a bit less ruined from a modern lifestyle due to an often immediate relationship with nature/farming.
I live in a village so my experience might be skewed (though I do try to take that into consideration when expressing my opinions).
I'm sure you are right.
Is also using olive pips for heating popular in Turkey?
munchmills@reddit
Good question, i don't really know but it sounds like people living in smaller villages would use it. They definitely are using coal for heating but i dont know what type.
So you are living in Crete? Lucky you! I visited about 2 years ago. Its my 2nd favorite island so far. Had a great time there and i really liked the simple and natural life style there, also reflected in the food, like you described. Hope to visit one day again.
puzzledpanther@reddit
I think it's only allowed in rural areas. Instead of oil for main heating, they use olive pip furnaces. It's quite popular in southern Italy as well which is where it spread here from decades ago (the first furnaces we had here were manufactured there, now they manufacture them here).
It's more economical than gas/oil since there's always an abundance of them (even in a bad havest year). Also a lot of olive mills use it for power... which is logical considering they produce a lot of it when making olive oil.
Glad you liked it! Hope you rented a car and managed to visit the southern part of the island. So many lovely secluded beaches and gorges to see.
I grew up here, travelled and lived elsewhere for a bit and for the past decade live here again with my family. We love it. It's got everything nature-wise and food is almost entirely localy sourced since you can grow pretty much anything here. We also grow a lot of our own vegetables, olives, vineyard, herbs, fruit orchard etc... all without pesticides.
It's a lot of work but it's nice to know where your food comes from.
Do you live in Turkey? Which part?
We're planning a road trip through Turkey for sometime in the future. From pictures/videos I've seen the nature is beautiful and I would love to wander around it. Not that interested in the big cities or the western touristic part.. but would love to drive through villages and interesting nature.
MardukPainkiller@reddit

Not as much as it is believed that we do. A tourist in Greece eats more olives in a week that a Greek does in a month. It's just part of our diet but nothing excessive.

Is there anyone saving the meme about one Greek and one Turk asking for money?
Ill_Ad_136@reddit
TBH I think it's more of an older generation problem. I visit other turkish subreddits and young people there are the same as the rest of the world. They travel, play games, drive cars, discuss anime, watching warhammer, playing football etc. I've read different topics on different themes. And in many discussions about such hatred I've read that people travel to each others countries and there was no quarrelling. My believe is that the government simply uses the history as a hate driver because for some reason the don't want to unite. Especially governments with a 70+ y.o. leaders but that seems more like a global problem. But I admit that sometimes I'm feeling the same fear. I am half turk but I dream about visiting Greece, Armenia, Georgia and still I get thoughts that I'll be not welcomed there the second they know who I am.
TiredPandastic@reddit
It's not as constant as you think, but basically Turkey is Greece's ex-conqueror and the feelings are still salty on both sides. It was 400 or so years of occupation, it's gonna take a while to go away.
Plus... unfortunately Turkey's government like to stir up shit for its ego.
Lorumba@reddit
We fought but we were not "conqueror" of the greeks. You are talking about ottomans which was both ex-conqueror of turkey and greece.
Maybe its because of this misconception of "turkey is the succsessor of the ottomans" thing?
Google2mGrapesUSjSR@reddit
Turkey is the successor of Ottomans. The cope with some Turks is unreal
Lorumba@reddit
No? We literally ended the ottomans? Shoul we assume the current germany is the continuity of n*zi germany?
We literally fought against the ottomans blud.
cicikusbabacik07@reddit
Depends on your perspective. As a nation, "we" were indeed the ruler of Ottomans, but as people we were not, we were only plebs bound to it. I think it is important to recognize both perspectives equally in history.
Though I don't know why you really don't feel like accepting that Ottomans are indeed an integral part of our national identity; that we really used to be one of the greatest nations among all mankind for a century or two, and a civilization that once made the western world feel awe-struck and insecure

MeetingImpressive689@reddit
Turks were the invaders and took our land, not long ago. They imposed Turkification on the populations of various regions, because they were small in amount but fierce and lethal, against the Byzantine empire, which was exhausted and in pieces. Most of the Turks' ancestry nowadays is greek primarily and the rest of the balkan as well, secondarily. It took them more than 4 centuries to do it, using inhumane methods. But it's silly really, because the real enemies were always the traitors within. The rich attached to the sultan, and the high clergy of the greek church, as well as the foreign kings the western empires imposed to us, that took treacherous actions. The memories of the Asia Minor catastrophe are still fresh. The Turks hate us because our revolution was the start of the decline of the Ottoman empire. Turks will never stop wanting more land, in the islands and Thrace, not only from Greece, but also from other countries around it. It's not the people, it's the governments and the big powers that create rivalry so we both buy expensive weaponry. Both countries have a very nationalistic mindset. That's why we don't have any real future.

Greeks can't hide their racism against Turks. Whenever they get the chance they generalize the entire population, go on about how "all Turks are the same", and they are the primary instigators of hatred towards Turks. But whenever Turks are on the victim side (like when things like EOKA B, or Greek racism towards Turks, or Greek support to PKK is mentioned) the Greek users either 1. Suddenly disappear (like how there are almost no Greeks commenting under the posts about attacks in Montenegro towards Turks), or 2. They tell us not to generalize. Maybe every single Greek isn't like that but atleast 90% of them are
When I was a kid I naively used believe that we have many similarities with Greeks and that Greeks are our friends and we should get along and we shouldn't judge everyone for history, until reality hit me hard

Don't get it twisted: you were the ones ruled by a governor as a province for 400 years; we were the ones ruling. If we had wanted to take women as war booty and spread our DNA, trust me, the Turks could have done it. There is no one as brainless as these Greeks; they’ve lost it like a paranoid meth-head at home, hallucinating that "Turks will invade us" and "we are perfect."
They actually think they can take on Turkey with a population only half the size of Istanbul, fueling their ridiculous fantasies by claiming "Europe will help us." Meanwhile, in Turkey, nobody gives a damn about you being Greek; you don't even cross people's minds in daily life. As a member of the European Union, instead of improving things like education and healthcare to strengthen your prosperity and economy, you’re stupid enough to waste time on bullshit arguments about things that happened 1000 years ago.
