Because parents have to juggle kids fucking question the entire time the try to make food.
analogthought@reddit
Boiled grossed me out the first time I learned as a kid that it was even an option (without a grill)
denzien@reddit
Not true!
Sometimes they looked like this:
handsomeape95@reddit
It's a perfectly sane food to eat.
Apprehensive_Bit_176@reddit
… interesting texture
denzien@reddit
The chewy red ends are the best part
pendejo-san@reddit
Good post. This is the problem dog, imho.
TeddyAtTheReady@reddit
And on that exact plate, too.
Drum_Eatenton@reddit
I came here looking for the split hot dog that has been microwaved to hell and back
4RealzReddit@reddit
That photo is a bridge too far.
willengineer4beer@reddit
Honestly preferred this over the boiled and the totally charred options if it only just barely starts splitting.
Properly cooked on the grill or carefully cooked in a cast iron skillet is still king IMO, but microwaved until it just splits is underrated.
Wife thinks I’m gross, but I’ll die on this hill (probably from colon cancer from all the processed hot dogs)
Annual_Strategy_6206@reddit
So. Gross.
VioletVenable@reddit
🤢 As a kid, I absolutely refused to eat exploded hot dogs. The visual was just so deeply repulsive to me as a kid! (TBH, it still grosses me out, but I could cope if I had to!)
kristosnikos@reddit
Um, excuse you but those blackened grilled ones are tasty af. It’s the taste of summer!
JazzlikeAd1555@reddit
Don’t ever trust a man that don’t like burnt hotdogs
Nintendroid@reddit
The char adds such a neat taste and texture. It's my favorite state of any given hot dog.
Swimming-Gap7395@reddit
I’ve been cooking mine in the traeger. You can cook them black or even smoke them into little beef sticks lol
cultured_pork@reddit
"I've got an extra done dog here if anyone wants it."
Raises hand enthusiastically like a 3rd grader
avalonfaith@reddit
I jump on em too! I only announce the "normal" ones for the weirdos that are like that. The great majority want that char.
Morriganx3@reddit
Charred isn’t normal? Who eats rare hot dogs??
tcpnick@reddit
I used to hang out with a kid when I was around 10. Asked me if I wanted a "tube steak" one time. I declined out if ignorance and then almost vomited when he proceeded to eat a cold hotdog.
Nintendroid@reddit
I can't outrightly say that "tube steak" is a Midwestern or Southern US thing, but I've heard all my life, between those two regions.
Jbowen0020@reddit
Last i heard tube steak has a hole in the end and a pair of nuts on the other
tcpnick@reddit
Yeah, we were in CA at the time. I believe they were from Illinois
Jbowen0020@reddit
Yeah, someone asks me if i want tube steak they risk losing teeth....
avalonfaith@reddit
I know, like, I knooooow, but they're out there and thing they're the normal ones.
SirStocksAlott@reddit
I say old chap, boiled hot dogs are the closest that some of us Americans will get to haggis. 🧐
caseyj27@reddit
All my dogs since childhood and my maternal grandma… Bro & I wanted to vomit when she would cook for us and it was always dogs boiled for 60secs, the inside was still cold!
TrixieBastard@reddit
I would eat cold hot dogs as a kid, but I also really love charred ones too. Anything in between those two states was unacceptable
Playful-Variety-1242@reddit
Burnt and shriveled up. No thanks!
Metals4J@reddit
You can peel off the burnt part. That way you can stick it back in the fire and get even more burnt hotdog! Same with marshmallows!
Nintendroid@reddit
Okay, but a charred marshmallow degloves so easily. Peeling off the burnt part of a hot dog sounds like a masochist surgical procedure. Nevermind, I'm getting into it as I describe it.
yawrrpdrk@reddit
Hahahaha
Weary-Inspector-6971@reddit

One time when we were about 17 we had a bonfire on the beach at night with a whole bunch of liquor and we had a pack of those dogs with the individual plastic wrapping on each one. My buddy looked over and saw me peeling one off and goes " I thought mine tasted funny."
We all laughed our asses of and teased the hell out of him like, bro, how drunk do you have to be to roast a weiner in plastic and then eat the whole thing.
On the bright side he survived the incident.

I don’t like hot dogs but I’ll take a nice crisp one off the grill in the summer anyway. There’s something different about them off the grill.
avalonfaith@reddit
If my mother had to old me that when I was young, would've saved me a heartache or two.
It-is-always-Steve@reddit
Yeah, throw some ketchup and mustard on them and put them next to some macaroni salad.
pendejo-san@reddit
Yes! Both of these hotdogs are acceptable under different circumstances.
Any hotdog one eats from a cart is of the boiled variety, basically.
Five Guys (Burgers and Fries) makes a decent dog. Bacon, mayo, bbq sauce on the dog is key
Playful-Variety-1242@reddit
It’s the only way!! When I was little at someone’s house their mom made boiled hotdogs. They didn’t taste good at all..
Draco53@reddit
When I first heard of boiled dogs I thought that sounded gross. My opinion hasn't changed much. Blackened grilled dogs for the win!
iwasjustthinkingman@reddit
My favorite!
-Ok-Perception-@reddit
Yeah, that texture is 10/10 and the slight acridity of the blackened hot dog skin makes the flavor so much better. Black dogs are the best dogs.
deltadeltadawn@reddit
This has to be the origin of the saying... Once you go black, you'll never go back.

kristosnikos@reddit
I LOVE my air fryer and omg I didn’t know this! Thank you for the rec.
GoodnightGoldie@reddit
You’re welcome! I used this “recipe,” and they turned out great! I can’t remember if I put them in for longer than the suggested time, but I don’t think so. The spiral slicing seems insane, but it was good! If the idea is too much, skip it and they should still turn out🖤

regeya@reddit
For the people who get grossed out by the super blackened ones like this, here's a tip: if you're using charcoal, set up your grill for indirect heating and put the dogs on the other side. They'll caramelize but won't burn, but I like to move them over to the direct side before I pull them off the grill.
JosephBlowsephThe3rd@reddit
This is my ideal. I don't like the heavily charred dogs. But a hot dog that's been roasting over indirect heat for a long time, being turned regularly: delicious. Low & slow kinda works lije dry aging: a fair bit of moisture is removed with the meat flavor becoming more concentrated (plus just enough carmelization).
ReuboniusMax@reddit
This is the way.
SlumberingSnorelax@reddit
Both are yummy IMO. Almost different foods.
kristosnikos@reddit
Agree. The charred parts create their own food group. Haha
kimchiman85@reddit

Jindrack@reddit
Charred hot dogs, watermelon, and orange soda. That’s how we did it at the San Diego beaches growing up.
kristosnikos@reddit
Just swap out the orange soda for kool aid with about a pound of sugar in it and that was my childhood in Appalachia.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit

FastWalkingShortGuy@reddit

seanymphcalypso@reddit
I’m just going to throw it out there, but, first fry up a slice of apple pie and then a brat. The caramelized apple filling really brings out the spices in a brat!
ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit
A slice of apple pie in the air fryer? Doesn’t the filling go all over the place?
seanymphcalypso@reddit
Nah, you just want to warm it up not bake it. I turn my air fryer down to about 325 for the pie.
ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit
I just got an air fryer for Christmas and I’m still discovering what to use it for.
I recently tossed some cubed sweet potato with a little oil, salt, garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika and chipotle pwder and air fried those mafackas and they got crispy as hell in like 10-15 mins. Made some dope ass tacos with that and some black beans.

chaosrulz0310@reddit

Space_bubbles013@reddit
Particular-Serve-894@reddit
while i generally agree...those look like they were cooked too fast and too hot. They should get nice a blackened finish, but at a much lower temp and with a longer cook time. Those look like they were tossed on to an overly hot grill and not allowed to cook properly... i bet the middles were luke-warm.
kristosnikos@reddit
That just means you can eat them right away and not wait for them to cool off. Duh! 😉
mrdon83@reddit
Do you like all your food burned or just your hot dogs?
kristosnikos@reddit
That is simply a stupid question. There are just some foods (mostly meats) that tastes better to me with some char.
This is usually how most hot dog wieners end up when on an open flame grill or over a fire.
I ate them more often in the summers as a kid, but I may eat them once or twice a year now around the summer holidays.

Even better - slice in half lengthwise, cut in half so you have four half-cylinders of tube meat. Fry that starting flat side down. Arrange on bread to cover, add cheese, whatever toppings you got, maybe some onions fried alongside the dog. Fried hotdog sandwich.

Oh god, the microwaved ones… they got weirdly bumpy and dry on the outside. Plus the end of the casing would open up and also be extra dry and bumpy. Back when I was a kid and Bill Cosby was beloved and frequently photographed with a cigar I would pretend I was Bill smoking one of my own via cold hot dog. Bite off one tip and then puff on it, make some ash by nibbling off the casing on the other end. Every so often tap the dog and bite off the ash. As a kid I never could figure out why anyone liked hot dogs. Then I grew up and realized that there are good quality hot dogs and they can be grilled properly.
AllenKll@reddit
where? how? what brand? please, I need to know! I haven't had a good hot dog in 30 years!

I got a hot dog from a street vendor after a concert in Seattle and the vendor offered to make "Seattle Style" and I was nervous about what that would include. Cream cheese. They spread cream cheese on the bun. It was amazingly delicious with caramelized onions and the slightly charred dog. My partner said it was blasphemous to do anything other than Chicago style though. His loss! Both are great!
LKayRB@reddit
I had one in NYC that was wrapped in bacon, with cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning. It was incredible!
TieAdventurous6839@reddit

MotherofaPickle@reddit
From Chicago. Currently living many hundreds of miles away. They stopped stocking Nathan’s near us a while ago. Husband’s cousin had extra hot dogs in the freezer that she wanted to get rid of. Nathan’s!
We only eat hot dogs once or twice a year (usually while camping, like god intended), so we’re set.
Upstairs_Usual_4841@reddit
Best hot dog I ever had was after a concert last year in Chicago from a street vendor. Absolutely delicious.

I was dating this chick for a hot minute & she invited me over to a cookout w/ her family. The grill was lit & cranking out hamburgers, & chicken leg quarters. The hot dogs however, stay w/ me now... were in the kitchen, on the stove, in a pot of water like they were getting a spa treatment. I immediately turned around & left like I was at the wrong address & didn't speak to a soul. That was 1995, & I've never seen, nor heard from her again.
BayouLuLu@reddit
My parents always boiled hot dogs. I hated hot dogs until I discovered a method my great aunt used. It became one of my latch key kid go-to meals: hot dog + butter + Worcestershire sauce in a pan. Cook it until it gets a little char on each side.

Boiled has the best texture and flavor. Overcooked grilled dogs get tough. They're precooked so they heat up quickly, and the grill doesn't add much if any flavor. Grill marks look nice. That's it.

King_of_Lunch223@reddit
I know I'm in a minority, but I prefer my hot dogs boiled. When I was younger, my parents would buy the cheapest/ poorest quality mystery meat hot dogs, and burn them to a crisp on the grill. The flavor just disgusted me. At least when you boil them, some of the salt, fat, and hostile flavors seep out into the water.
As an adult, I only buy Nathan's or Hebrew National.
jesusismygardener@reddit
Boiled is the best and I’ll die on that hill. Especially for chili dogs
FledglingNonCon@reddit
I prefer zero beef (pork and chicken) dogs gently warmed in water (not boiled) for about 10 min (water will almost, but not quite boil by the end) and steam the buns over the pot with a wire cooling rack. As close to a $2 street corner dog as I can get at home. I also use Sriracha instead of ketchup on them.
flyinthesoup@reddit
Costco's are also great, both the regular and the giant kind.
I prefer my weiners boiled for hotdogs, but everything else grilled is better. Microwave as a last resort option. Oh, I do boil them for ramen too, I toss them in the pot with the noodles.

MegatronusThePrime@reddit
Sorry for being dumb but do you mean just put beer in a pot/pan and boil it?
3OsInGooose@reddit
Yep! Boil em in beer like you would water. Can poke the casings with a fork a couple times to let the beer in
avalonfaith@reddit
Can you then grill then for char and like maximize. Flavor?
TheDodoBird@reddit
Oh for sure, mate. That’s basically step 2. Never had beer boiled hot dogs, but beer boiled brats are amazing.
avalonfaith@reddit
Next on the list!
MotherofaPickle@reddit
Of course. But then you still have to char them on the grill/campfire.
MegatronusThePrime@reddit
Do you use a specific one (like what do you like) and also do certain beer work better like lager or stout etc? Thanks!
3OsInGooose@reddit
Nah, any garbage macrobrew works pretty well. whatever’s cheap
RoutineLingonberry48@reddit
As someone who has tried this: It's a waste of beer. Comes out just like you used water. Any difference is an illusion. Beer. Root beer. whatever. Just use water.
The only time this matters is if you're boiling something way longer than you would beef franks, that starts dry and inedible and ends up mostly soft because it's mostly water: Rice. Beans.
ass-eatn-szn@reddit (OP)
Ohhh, I like the beer boiled brat idea. Never tried it.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
WHAT? It’s the only way. Johnsonville now sells beer brats already infused with beer.
Drum_Eatenton@reddit
Boil them until done, then sear them on the grill. I was a naysayer until I tried it, very juice without being greasy.
handsomeape95@reddit
Never tried brats either. But I became a snob lately and only beer boil frankfurters.
3OsInGooose@reddit
If you're really fancy quarter an onion in there with it
MiniRems@reddit
Naw, gotta make tons of onions slivers, then those perfectly grilled brats soak in a beer and onion jacuzzi while the corn on the cob and other veg are being grilled up. Then you serve up the brats with onions and mustard.
viperised@reddit
And steam your rolls over the pan
radarksu@reddit
And it's shit. Either the beer/water never gets through the casing, and never does anything. Or the casing breaks and the brat is ruined by being in water. Both options are shit.
If you boil your meat, the terrorists win.
Cisru711@reddit
Isn't that a waste of beer? Or do you drink from the pot afterwards?

MotherofaPickle@reddit
A dirty water dog is completely different. I would much rather risk parasites from a legit “dirty water dog” in NYC or Chicago than boil a hot dog on my stove when I have a perfectly good grill and fire pit.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
The key to replicating the dirty water dog is to not boil it. Since the dogs are already cooked you are looking to gently warm them to the appropriate temperature. I find 10 min in the pot at just past medium comes very close to replicating the $2 city corner dirty water dog. You can also steam the bun over the pot with a wire cooling rack. Do this for lunch almost once a week.

Bring water to a rolling boil, turn off and add your hort dags. Basically a light parboil; let them jacuzzi for about 7~10 minutes.

While heating up I chopped a small salad side dish. I've had 10+ back surgeries and if it's late and I'm getting sore, I'll find a safe way to cool the meat after fully cooked and leave it for tomorrow while I enjoy my cheap ass hotdog meal. I’ve got a funny story about hot dogs. My friend can’t cook. Like, boiling water and making a baked potato are beyond him. One day, he had a cookout at his place. I showed up late and he was into the drink. He asked what I wanted I told him to throw a couple hot dogs on the grill. Well, he forgot about them. I asked him where my food was and we both walked over to his grill. He lifted the lid and it was just 2 lines of char on the griddle. Just like from a cartoon. I ended up making my own food at his cookout.
A few years ago, he did nearly the same thing to a perfectly innocent set of ribs.

Actual ruddy sausages. Frankfurters ain't that; let alone the Yankified ones. Neither never have been. Nor never will be.
Feefifiddlyeyeoh@reddit
We didn’t have microwaves?
TheMacintoshGeek@reddit
Because air fryers weren’t invented yet. Air fryer dogs are peak 👌
Smile_Space@reddit
Boiled dogs are just the best. Grilled are good too! I like the char, but man a tasty boiled glizzy goes so hard.
G0DS_DEMON@reddit
Absolutely hate boiled hotdogs. Grilled is the way to go…
MajesticLow@reddit
I would have loved the burnt version 😂. We were a boiled hot dog household, and while I had no other option back then, I live for the more burnt dogs now 😅
Chemical-Coconut-879@reddit
There's nothing wrong with a dirty water dog
MajesticLow@reddit
Nothing wrong at all! I’ve just enjoyed the options of burning over boiling them as an adult.
Give me a boiled dog+white bread +ketchup and I’m aril a happy camper 😂
OkCriticism9433@reddit
Idk but I appreciate both to this day
TheMadMetalhead@reddit
I only do my hot dogs in New York style dirty water they soak up all the spices and they are delicious
poop-money@reddit
Our parents learned to cook from their parents and in much of America that meant depression/silent generation recipes, overcooked meat, Americanized Chinese food, Americanized Mexican food, and the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook.
I feel lucky to have the Internet and curiosity enough to be an adventurous eater. I also don't regret cooking professionally for 16 years, until I look at my retirement savings.
ohb78@reddit
Didn’t know there were other options…
Skitzafranik@reddit
Growing up??😁 it still is !!😂😂
Logvin@reddit
I actually sent this post to my kids - grandpa cooks the left image, grandma cooks the right image. They may be in their 70's but they still cook them EXACTLY like this.
pregnantandsober@reddit
I still love boiled hot dogs, but now I eat Hebrew Nats instead of Ball Park.
Skitzafranik@reddit
Similarly same! I’ve upgraded from whatever C grade no-name brand hot dogs my parents bought, to Nathan’s !!!🙌🏽😁😎
ouijahead@reddit
Tremendous upgrade. Also different from when I was a child, if it can go on a hotdog, put it on there. I like everything.
One-Earth9294@reddit
You should have seen my dad's hamburgers. Just chunks of carbon.
ass-eatn-szn@reddit (OP)
Me too. Holy cow. Why did they hate a good medium cooked burger
Logvin@reddit
Bold of you to assume my dad was even aiming for medium.
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
Hard pass on the right, but I'll crush a handful of the ones on the left.
Curious-Comedian-285@reddit
I question people that boil their hot dogs. I like mine burnt.
balzstein@reddit
Grill pork hotdogs. Boil beef hotdogs.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I mean, I grew up with steamies, but I've found out that's really a Quebec thing and less everywhere else. But fries were always cooked in a chip pot on the stove.

llahlahkje@reddit
Air frying kosher hot dogs is the way to go.
But I grew up on questionable meats cuz we didn’t always have food in the house and you take what you can get.
Many is the times I made a lunch out of a can of vegetables with the smallest amount of butter.
During those times I’d have killed for a shitty ass, burned Jenni-O link.

On the right, absolutely not.

The ones on the left are fine but honestly whoever was at the grill just forgot to keep rotating them. If you didn’t have a relative that took grilling seriously your hotdog experience was unfortunate.
nunja_biznez@reddit
Not the ones I grew up with. But I'm not American.
Gr8tfulmoeron@reddit
The first thing I learned to cook was boiled hotdog! Now looking back on it, I know better.
Tyenkrovy@reddit
Growing up? Hell, I still have them like this. 😅
VA1N@reddit
I grew up on boiled hot dogs. My dad would boil them and wrap them in tin foil and we’d go to the ballgame together. To this day, I still love them boiled. I know it’s a minority opinion, but it reminds me of the good days before family life went south growing up.
Pmood@reddit
I'll take a "burnt" one!!
Kjler@reddit
We had an electric hot dog cooker. It looked a lot like an old battery charger if each end (+ and -) had a sort of spike. You'd stab each end of the dog onto a spike, slightly arched, and electrocute it until it began to split down the middle. It could cook up to 4 hot dogs at once and nothing else.
mcbeardsauce@reddit
Because your dad was tired of you bugging there were grill marks so your mom took over

lankyleper@reddit
Sounds weird, but the crappy chicken/pork hot dogs boiled in beer, then topped with sauerkraut and spicy mustard, are actually pretty delicious. Give me a beef hot dog or coney grilled over being boiled any day, though.
Lethave@reddit
I could see that being good, it's almost like brining them in flavor

ThePhoenix63@reddit
Broiled in the oven. Or boiled in water
jdg401@reddit
Fuck a boiled hotdog. Pan/grill char every time ftw
gesis@reddit
My grandpa used to serve me boiled hot dogs on plain white bread when I was a kid.
These days, it's Nathans or Hebrew Nationals cooked on a cast iron grill, served on lightly toasted potato rolls.
I should revisit the boiled dogs on occasion...

Clawman1701@reddit
A little charred ? It’s fine, though I dislike crunch in hot dogs, there’s a fine line of char for me… Solid black charcoal and as crunchy as a potato chip with no juice or tenderness at all? Heck no, disgusting.
But it could be worse.. though my grandma liked them rock hard and burnt to a crisp (not exaggerating.) my mom would eat them frozen out of a freezer 🤢
Life_Grade1900@reddit
Dude. The ones on the left are pure perfection

That will put some hair on your chest haha. I do like the idea of a corn tortilla.

OffMeta13@reddit
I prefer them burnt
Cisru711@reddit
There were also campfire dogs, which were always undercooked or burnt because they fell off your stick.
handsomeape95@reddit
I enjoy making them in the summer over my fire pit. Last year I bought a grate that fits over it. Sometimes we make a pigs in blanket kind of thing with Pillsbury cresent rolls.
Cisru711@reddit
That would be cool
mizushimo@reddit
Those hotdogs, they were always charred on the outside and stone cold on the inside in a cold bun. They were just something to eat that I didn't hate on a cookout.
handsomeape95@reddit
Dare we start the ketchup vs mustard arguement?
optionstrategy@reddit
Both.
A charred hot dog on a cheap but fresh bun, dollar store ketchup and mustard.
Perfection when drunk around 1pm.
iloveyourlittlehat@reddit
What argument? Mustard.
handsomeape95@reddit
I'm in violent agreement as we're adults now.

I do enjoy a bbq hot dog but my go to is microwave steamies. Put it in the bun, wrap in paper towel. Two dogs at 1min 10sec and the are perfect
Shoddy_Bet9619@reddit

We never boiled dogs growing up. It was charcoal grilled with toasted buns, pan grilled in butter with buttered and grilled buns, or steamed with steamed buns. From New England so we used the New England style buns
BraveLittleToaster8@reddit
New England style buns are the way! So much surface area to toast them to perfection with perfect grill stripes!

Sheesh. Sounds awesome. Ill have to try it.
Opposite-Mushroom940@reddit
Left is perfection
BeefModeTaco@reddit
I don't love the charred ones, but I understand people do, and I don't think they're wrong it just doesn't hit for me.
Boiled always sounded horrible, though...
I always just nuked them in the microwave for like 30 seconds or so. I want it hot, but not exploding or inverting itself...
Preferably with some artificial cheese food product injected inside...
Yeah, I'm weird, you can say it.
Walter_Padick@reddit

They're carcinogenic AND gross. If something causes cancer, it should at least taste good
jazzbot247@reddit
If it wasn’t a BBQ mine were cooked in the microwave.
Southern_Growth_7991@reddit
That’s why I put my hotdogs on the top rack when grilling. Everything else cooks at high heat while the hotdogs slowly cook the whole time. I’m the only one I’ve ever seen make the hotdogs have “leopard spots” it’s like crisp on those burnt ones but more even. Flip every 5 mins and away from high heat will get you the perfect dog.
YakiVegas@reddit
Um, they weren’t? Sorry your adults were shitty cooks lol
ass-eatn-szn@reddit (OP)

Intelligent-Salt-362@reddit
Those just look like shitty quality dogs. We always bought Nathan’s and then boars head which you could get a good even char on, and they snapped when you bit into them. These look like Hebrew Nationals which absolutely suck. As far as the grilled ones, looks like pops was getting another beer or two when he should have been flipping them bitches. The boiled ones are just a travesty and whoever did that should be bought up on charges.
BoomersDad17@reddit
