Captain EO

We saw this when it was a new thing, when 3D with polarized glasses wasn't common, and everyone always grabbed for the little flying orange dude at the end of the show.

Fun fact: the Star Wars show Skeleton Crew is a nod to Captain EO and the whole crew. There’s even a scene where they are selling other species of Fuzzballs in a market.
CelticSith@reddit
That’s awesome! I’m usually really good at catching these Easter eggs but this one went right over my head
RaptorKnifeFight@reddit
It almost went over mine. The whole time I was watching it, I was like…what is so familiar about this? Then they showed other Fuzzballs and my mind exploded.
McFly1986@reddit
Is it any good? I had kind of sworn off Star Wars but I love Captain EO and this has me interested.
S_A_R_K@reddit
It's a fun show. Much better than a lot of the stuff Disney has put out. If you haven't watched Andor, you should. It's phenomenally written. Some people think the first 3 episodes are a little slow but I thought it was great from the start
McFly1986@reddit
Oh man, I should have put an asterisk next to my comment, I DID watch Andor and as you said it was phenomenal! Wish they could do more like that.
RaptorKnifeFight@reddit
I liked it and am also skeptical of new Star Wars. It’s totally stand alone, no Jedi, just a misfit crew of “regular” people trying to make their way through the galaxy. A good example of the endless stories that could be told within the established Star Wars universe, but doesn’t have to tie into anything.

There really ought to be a law against calling anything you feel like "4K."
Plastic-Vermicelli60@reddit
It was so high def and real, I was protecting my ass the whole ride.
Nipplasia2@reddit
I went to Disney this year and expected this to be there. I was highly pissed. O got to try Beverly so I guess trip wasn't a total waste.
Nanaman@reddit
Can I get a "Hell yeah!" for Anjelica Huston?!
LassieDear@reddit
I saw this again when they brought it back for the 25th (?) anniversary and it was even better than I remembered
nudave@reddit
What was the one from this era where you shrunk down inside a boy's body? And he had a crush on a cute girl? I remember that making me feel all sorts of things at age 8 or 9.
likebudda@reddit
I remember watching Avatar thinking how TF did Captain EO have better 3D effects?
Illystylez619@reddit
Saw this first thing everytime we went to Disneyland. My sister and I would yell "Captain EO!" On our way into the park.
Icy_Hippo@reddit
Saw in 88 on a family holiday! I loved it!
cranberries87@reddit
I saw this some time in the early 90s I think. I went to Disney with a family from my church. The only thing I remember was the final song at the end, which I really liked.
utti@reddit
I loved this as a kid and was thrilled they brought it back when I went to Disneyland in 2013. A lot cornier than I remembered but still entertaining.
Where_Is_Bucky@reddit
I still have my Captain E-O t-shirt that I bought at Epcot.
iwantmy-2dollars@reddit
The graphic/logo for Captain E-O was so cool! I didn’t get a shirt but still have my pin.
nrek00@reddit (OP)
frame it, that's amazing 😂
Where_Is_Bucky@reddit
Frame it? I still wear it!!!
noonesaidityet@reddit
Saw this at EPCOT on New Year's Eve 1989. My first 3D movie, and I was blown away.

Joining reddit just to comment on this post. Somewhere around 89 or 90 was at Disneyland Park and went to see Captain EO at the end of the day because the line was non-existent and we had heard the attraction was going away forever that fall. Enjoyed the film and as we left heard over the speaker system an announcement of a new ride for patrons to "test" and got to experience the Indiana Jones ride before it officially opened.
One era went away ushering in the next.
nrek00@reddit (OP)
oh man, going to Disneyland in '95 was top tier, we had the same opportunity to test the new Indiana Jones ride before it officially opened. Felt like looking behind the curtain in Disneyland; but at the same time the ride was completely done and ready for patrons - calling it "testing" was part of the thrill I think.

I keep trying to find a 3D version to watch on my Quest 2. Seeing it in 3D was a highlight of visiting Disney back in the day.
A5traLune@reddit
The way my whole class lost their minds grabbing for that little orange dude. 3D was straight magic back then, not this overproduced IMAX every movie nonsense. Also pretty sure Captain EO is why half of us grew up thinking Michael Jackson could actually save the galaxy with a dance off.
nrek00@reddit (OP)
wait... but MJ could, in fact, save the galaxy with a dance off though
RipErRiley@reddit
I went to Disney World in the mid 80’s and distinctly recall seeing this as well. In particular, the asteroids in 3D.
mac117@reddit
Remember seeing this in 88. Next time I went back to Disney was 93 and they’ve already scrubbed MJ from the parks at that point
I got to watch it again when Disney put it back at Epcot after Jackson’s death and it was a nostalgia overload.
The_BunnyMan_Woods@reddit
Same. No memory of the movies just the hot, chair less room we all had to stand in for an hour or so prior. It smelled. That’s what I remember.
RipErRiley@reddit
Wow that’s right! That pre-show wait was indeed with all of us sitting on the floor.
Surfer27@reddit
I think I saw the trailer or something and do real thought it was a movie and not a ride. I kept waiting and wait for it to be in my local theater but never was. It was o my years later I found out it was a ride at the parks. (Lived in the Midwest far from the parks)
nemomnemonic@reddit
I remember watching it in Disneyland Paris (then Euro Disney) back in 1992. I think this was my first 3D film experience ever :)
thedudeintx82@reddit
I remember something with this at Disney Land. I don't remember if it was a ride or just watching it in 3D there. But I do remember something about Captain Neo.
AsideLost@reddit
I would see it at least twice every time we went to Disneyland. Remember punching some old guy in the back of the head trying to grab that little flying rat.
Suns_In_420@reddit
The villain lady always creeped me out as a kid.
Tylerdurden389@reddit
She scared me as the grand high witch in "The witches". I think her look in EO was inspired by H.R. Giger's artwork that was also used in the first Alien movie and "Species" (1995) too.
jjdlg@reddit
OK but, also...
Jokierre@reddit
That was Morticia Addams
Half_A_Beast_333@reddit
They still had this at Tokyo Disney in 2013.
Roklam@reddit
Hell Yeah - I believe I saw this in Disney World too!
DickBurns01@reddit
I still have a hat I got when seeing it
SweetCosmicPope@reddit
I never got to go to Disney when I was a kid because my grandparents were cheapskates about that kind of stuff. lol But I remember there was this behind the scenes special about Disney World on the Disney channel, and they showed part of this and it looked so cool.
Satur_Nine@reddit
I think I saw the same thing. It really sticks with you. 35 years later, still never saw it
TheNaughtyDragon@reddit
Saw this around Christmas of 86 or 87 at Disneyland. 😁
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
The 3D was indeed very impressive at the time.
PhiloLibrarian@reddit
I saw this at Epcot, summer of ‘88! Epic!
LooksLikeAWookie@reddit
Grew up with this!
onedrrboy@reddit
This was my favorite part of my Disney visit in the late 80s. Not sure how well it has aged, but the 3D effects were incredible. I was one of those fools grabbing for the orange guy! 😂
