Need a good jet inspired sticker idea
Posted by rasta-warrior@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 32 comments
Hey everyone,
I came across this sticker the other day and really liked it simple, clever, and very much in line with how we think in the cockpit.
It got me thinking about making something similar, but with more of a jet/Boeing feel. Maybe something involving the pedestal, thrust levers, or engines.
Does anyone have ideas for a phrase or a concept that could work? Ideally something subtle and a bit insider, but still clean enough for a sticker.
Thanks in advance
Keep rocking folks

I did not know that expression came from aviation. TIL

Specifically ww2. When the planes were being rolled out as fast as possible it was cheaper to install a ball onto the end of the throttle to hit the flat sheet metal wall where all the guages were installed instead of a stopper to limit travel behind the wall.
weaselkeeper@reddit
Nope âBalls to the wallâ is a steam engine phrase for full speed.
The governor is located next to the boiler wall and at full steam the âballsâ which are the governors counter weights are at their full travel out centrifugally and close to the boiler wall.
Fireside__@reddit
Thatâs âBalls outâ not âBalls to the wallâ as in the centrifugal governor having its balls swing all the way out.

Thatâs more typically âballs outâ

I just recently went to National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem PA and learned that! It was a special event, so they had engineers on hand and actually fired up their 115 ton Corliss steam engine, which was awesome to experience. They talked about the governor and explained how the phrase came about. All the industrial equipment would be powered by a belt connected to a single shaft back to a main engine (often steam). To speed the equipment up, you had to run that main engine faster, and the fastest you can go is by opening the governor fully, referred to as "balls out" or "balls to the wall".

While balls to all does mean full throttle, it pre-dates aviation and comes from steam engines.
EvilGeniusSkis@reddit
Balls out comes from flyball governers, balls to the wall comes from planes.

Youâre wrong there - ww2 planes absolutely have limit stops on all controls. They do not just run the controls into the firewall lmao. What kind of clown told you that

Last place I expected to see Oath of the Horatii was in an aviation sub. I'm now going to head over to r/superyachts to see Judith and Holofernes.Â

Why force it? Sayings like this come about organically, trying to push the creation of a new one just feels awkward.
