Question for Serbs: What is the retrospective view on Boris Tadić and his work as President?

Hi everyone!
I’ve been following the current student protests in Serbia, which led me to research what the country’s leadership looked like before the current SNS regime. I’m curious about the period between Đinđić and Vučić: specifically the presidency of Boris Tadić.
From what I’ve read so far, it seems like a lot of the same issues we see today. Corruption and institutional control were already present back then. Some people even describe him as a softer version of what came later.
I have a few questions for those who remember his time in power:
-
Looking back, what do you think were his biggest successes and his biggest failures? Compared to the current government, was the corruption really that different, or was it just better hidden?
-
Why did people choose the ex-Radicals (SNS) in 2012 despite their history in the 90s? Was it because Tadić’s government was genuinely that bad or people just got tired of Tadić?
-
I’ve heard many Serbs online say they regret 2012 now, even if they hated Tadić at the time. Do you think he was truly the "lesser evil," or did his administration actually pave the way for the current system?
Sorry for all these questions, I’m just curious how it all started and how Serbia in two versions: Tadic vs Vucic regime. And in the same way it’s way more interesting to hear experience from actual people who lived at that time.
Thank you so much for answers!!!

He is essentially proto-Vucic. Yes, he was more civilized and knew how to act publicly, but constitution was merely a suggestion for him, employment based on party membership instead of competence started with him, selling assets to foreigners was already in full swing before hin and he just maintained that and he poltically went all around and humiliated himself and us for no reason. By the time it seemed like he won't win for the 3th time (mind you this is VERY unconstitutional), he made sure to ravage the party making sure that SNS is the only real party with actual numbers before he left. Yes, he wasn't emberassing and you didn't question his the sanity and intelligence too often, but in many ways he showed SNS the way and in retrospect I can't help but see hin as Vucic-lite.
bljujemvatrupecemleb@reddit
the whole neo-cult of personality that v***c enjoys was started by him and was enforced on the level of low-ranking members' families. when he was in the second half of his final term i was in secondary school, and i distinctly remember the day when a lot of girls my age in the entire school were given the party line to recite for weeks on end about how he's so "full of sex appeal", "masculine", "handsome", and "virile", and that last word was especially weird to hear because nobody my age att would've known it (i remember i had to look it up in the dictionary), yet here were a lot of girls my age from my class, people i knew, who were suddenly acting all unnatural and were reciting the same 5 adjectives all over, like they'd read it off a supplementary sheet that had been handed down to their parents alongside a work order. it was so weird, but literally nobody had figured out what it all meant at the time

Low-Attitude-7100@reddit (OP)
I heard that EU was practically for SNS to win elections. Pretty weird if you ask me
DownvoteEvangelist@reddit
Because just as us, EU was also disapointed with Tadic, judical reform done under Tadic was a farse, it didn't make Serbian judicary branch closer to EU rules at all, it just purged less desirable judges.
He was also really fighting back Brussels agreement (normalizing relations with Kosovo).
Veles95@reddit
Of course it was. You think SNS is not pro-EU? They practically listened to Germany ti the point there was a common analogy like Angela Merkel is a teacher in a class full of unrully and bit stupid kids that are our politicians. God damn it, Tonny Blair was "advisor" to our government. Sure, there may sometimes lean to America, Russia or China from time to time, but that's mostly for benefits and perks. The only belief and ideology people in power have is power. That's where the real support comes from our government.
Low-Attitude-7100@reddit (OP)
I know they are pro EU but just in their standards. If they need to make free media, being less corrupted than it’s no no. But I found an EU is rather hypocritical when it comes to Serbia. For what is happening in Serbia, other countries would be accused pretty easily. they must have some kind of secret agreement.
bljujemvatrupecemleb@reddit
't's a rather well-known event in serbia, that german officials congratulated the sns' state-taking victory 2 hours before the polling stations'd closed
VinisiusPu@reddit
He was perfect for the role of president. We have never felt ashamed like we do now with Vucic.
However, he tried to control the prime minister role and goverment, just like Vucic have done for all this years. So people were sick of it.
Very bad team of advisors and even marketing agency that was hired for those elections has been absolutely useless.
Overall, even though I have never voted for him, I really regret it now 😂
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
His popularity spiralled so much by the end, people were overwhelmingly apathetic to go out and vote. And that is when the SNS (barely) won for the first time.
But to be fair, we didn’t think it could happen, so we were dumbly in a state of shock after the election, but it was too late.
mihjok@reddit
That is not true. We knew SNS will win. And Tadic deserved it. The other thing is that most of the people were so naive and did not believe that fascists would destroy the elections.
LearnFromTheDruid@reddit
How the fuck did anyone know sns was gonna win after Nikolic lost the first round? Normally sns won the first round and lost the second as everyone else gathers to vote against them. So when Tadic even won the first round, it looked like a slam dunk
mihjok@reddit
Because after the first round it was obvious that s*s coalition has more than 50% for the first time after Milosevic was moved away. That had not happen before 2012, when dss and ds were the main leaders, with sps helping first dss then ds to form the majority.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
No, it was a collective shock. We were litterally acting like it was the end of the world after the elections
mihjok@reddit
Maybe yours.
Low-Attitude-7100@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s totally understandable.
It was so weird that Vucic was presented himself and SNS as “anti-corruption” party. Next time in election you really need to be careful about choice
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
The thing is, it was a combination of people being apathetic and discouraged to even go out and vote, nobody thinking Vučić can actually win, and Vučić himself presenting as a progressive candidate.
Anyway, we should’ve definitely known better.
LearnFromTheDruid@reddit
Vucic wasnt the sns candidate then though
lxkq_ix@reddit
Yeah bro i was 8 at the time i had no fucking choice. I still don't have a choice because the dictator will just rig the elections again

Low-Attitude-7100@reddit (OP)
Oh I actually heard that he has something with SNS. I know SNS was made by ex radicals but in which way Tadic was involved? Can you explain in few words because I’m lost hehe. Thanks!
luletino@reddit
Tadić assumed that helping SNS would fracture SRS and destroy it, singulary focusing on it as the only threat. In his mind that would leave his as the only electoraly viable party, he lacked the imagination to forcee the unintended consequences of ending the at that point only reason to vote for him for many people, fear of SRS. The death of SRS killed DS as well, paving the way for any third way oportunists looking to take advantage of the situation.
One-Chemistry-5784@reddit
He changed the law according to which a party and not an individual is the owner of the mandate, and then everyone from the SRS switched to the SNS and remained in the positions of members of parlament
DownvoteEvangelist@reddit
That doesn't make sense, if the party became the owner, switching from SRS to SNS would leave those positions to SRS..
One-Chemistry-5784@reddit
Nope, the party WAS the owner
DownvoteEvangelist@reddit
Ah so Tadic changed it to person ? It should be person..
One-Chemistry-5784@reddit
I guess, if you are SNS supporter
DownvoteEvangelist@reddit
It's how it works in every democracy. Otherwise it makes having people in parliament meaningless. You could just have party representatives.
One-Chemistry-5784@reddit
Of course that's not how democracy works. If we had the new conditions before the new elections, I wouldn't have anything against it, but he literally created a new party that became the major force in the parliament without anyone voting for them.
branimir2208@reddit
You mean viceversa?
DownvoteEvangelist@reddit
I mean he was super happy that SRS was splitting into SRS and SNS, but that's understandable, he expected that they will splinter and be weaker, what he didn't expect is that SNS will grow after splintering and manage to win over some of his voters too..
bljujemvatrupecemleb@reddit
he and some other dumb fuck made the sns out of whole cloth in an attempt to photocopy the american two-single-parties system in order to cement the political class' insulation from public opinion. that he's now an executive emeritus or something at a chinese rocket SEO company indicates that he may have got what he wanted, albeit in a different way, with a one-party state that completely ignores the public at best and is actively hostile to the populace whenever its membership is not asleep

zanimljivo123@reddit
Thanks to these two we still exist in BiH, nit omly that, we were dominating the entire war. If it wasn't for them we would suffer the same fate as serbs from krajina
Typical-Froyo-642@reddit
Serbs from Krajina were only chased from Croatia after Croats were ethnically chased from Krajina by them. Maybe the best way to not get that fiath is to not commit bunch of war crimes.
Also Mladic and Karadžic were not the reason for Serbs dominating the war, that was thanks to Serbia transforming JNA into serbian army.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
Serbs in Croatia were one of the constituent people before beloved Tuđman and his HDZ changed the constitution and making Serbs a minority. They faced discrimination and were dismissed or pressured out of jobs. This was before even Croatia declared independence.
Now, how do you think Serbs in Croatia would feel? I'm not making an excuse for what Serbs did but making such statement 1-sided is ridiculous.
Typical-Froyo-642@reddit
How is it a 1-sided statement? Yes, Serbs did faced discrimination in Tudjmans Croatia. But there was not attempt to chase them out of Croatia. Circumstances for that were created only after serbian nationalists ethnically cleansed the Croats.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
That's not quite true. Saying there was no attempt to push Serbs out ignores indirect pressures and later events. Why do you think Log revolution happened?
That's correct.
Typical-Froyo-642@reddit
Indirect pressures are not ignored, but those are not sufficient enought to achieve effects of ethnic cleansing. Especially if they were only starting to happen and there is time to fight back. Later events are notable, I agree, and there was certainly desire in Croatia to just get rid of Serbs completely. But before the war there no real attempt to do it and what ended up happening was that Serbs ethnically cleansed Croats first.
Log revolution (at least intially) happened only in places dominated by the extrememly reactionary and nationalist Serbian Democratic Party (most Serbs in Croatia voted for reformed communist/social democratic party). It was a really bad idea. Serbs did have reasons to be concerned, but so did non-Serbs ever since Slobodan Miloševic started to promote his nationalist policies.
zanimljivo123@reddit
Ignoring what croats did in ww2 again don't we? Croats and muslims were killing and terrorizing serbs in BiH from 1908. onwards, you think their armies were not hostile towards us? 45.000 serbs got expelled from western herzegovina by muslims and croats 1992. for example. If they could have done it, they would have expelled us all from BiH completely. Anyone who thinks otherwise lives in a rosy world
backhand_english@reddit

zanimljivo123@reddit

backhand_english@reddit
These type of people are why Serbs from Croatia had to leave. They fueled up the violent rebelion (as my aunt lived across the road from Martić-led police station in Knin and barely made it out alive, she saw the influx of arms into their arms well before the start of the so-called "balvan revolution"). Them, Vučić and all the other scum. And THEN they sold out the Serbs from Croatia to cover their own asses in 1995. And people like you are celebrating them. Thats whats unbelievable to me.
Not just me, my Serbian friends too. Serbian friends that saw scum coming with vitriolic speeches from far away, from Belgrade and elsewhere, trying to stir shit up on a religious basis. Thats why my Serbian friends stayed here, stayed with their Croat neighbors and lifelong friends and defended their villages and towns.
Whats unbelievable to me is that there are still, in 2026, with all info available at their fingertips, defending the scum like Mladić, Karađić and alike...
When you have people like Mladić running the show, of course we couldnt split like decent humans, like Czechoslovakia for instance... And thats on them.
You defending them today, thats entirely on you.
P.S. and of course you'll say I'm some kind of ustaša, when the truth is entirely different and thats insulting to me and my leftist political views. You, you are just indoctrinated into hate. And thats fucking sad. I wont even read your reply, someone idolizing a genocidal maniac like Mladić cant change, especially on some online forum. So, I hope you find peace in life. Adio.

He also thought it is a great idea to shorten his term and to try to flirt with nationalistic voters. This all backfired spectacularly on the elections and after his lost.
Dafke98@reddit
He was well manered, but incapable, passive, weak and had many flaws in general.. His weakness caused people to first vote in SNS 15 years ago, as they seemed to be firm, which turned out to be true, but also more brutal and corrupt.
Basically, Tadić was a pussy and did absolutely nothing.
Proof_Front_8490@reddit
Well that pussy said no to Angela M. No to "normalisation" of relationships with Kosovo, no to selling national Telecom to german Telecom and no to selling national electricity producer and supplier to German counterpart(s).
The world economic crisis from wasn't really helpful for him and also I could not rule out simple voter fatigue. It is a myriad of factors. Also let's not forget that before and during the elections SNS was openly supported by some of the EU politicians so SNS was not really looking anti EU at all.
Also the opposition was well present on the TV and could say and promise (lie) whatever they wanted (like "Kosovo and the EU") and that where they were giving impression of being more firm - (fake) strong Kosovo stance.
And not to forget the presidential election had two round as in the first they were tied. Before the second round SNS found some abandoned voting ballots (allegedly) it was well present on TV - after they won, there was no investigation about that. So that "incident" was used to motivate SNS voters for the second round while others were not motivated enough to go to vote again in the second round.
jojaibranjainvestt@reddit
You need to understand the context of politics in Serbia first. Radical party (their core later founded sns) and everything that surrounds it has been installed in the 90s and when it wasn’t a strong first, it was a strong second in every elections. Key thing people forget is that our society loves their rhetoric.
Now enter war, crime spike, sanctions and enter democracy in 2000s. After assassination of Djindjic you basically ended up with democratic but extremely corrupted party in power.
Salaries weren’t 10x-ed, 2008 economic collapse happened, people still needed to have connections to get to full time employment, so people punished democrats and welcomed radicals back.
In reality Tadic just wasn’t a strong leader capable of continuing reforms and prosecuting powerful criminals.
He tried democracy but didn’t have the assets to bring it to the people, he tried being the strong leader but wasn’t appealing to democratic voters, he tried being the patriot and eu punished him for it.
I think he is a very good debater and a handsome politician. But not a politician 2005-10 Serbia needed.

Useless in general - useful for paving the way for Vucic's tyranny.
Incvbvs666@reddit
1) His biggest success was keeping the country stable in very trying times, namely a time when Serbia was still a pariah state because Mladić and Karadžić were still at large. He also was far more intransingent when it came to ceding Serbian power and interests in Kosovo.
His biggest failure was a poor response to the 2008 economic crisis. It is understandable that small coalition partners needed to be happy in order for the government to survive, but completely folding to the Pensioner's Party's blackmail and raising pensions during a burgeoning economic crisis was a complete disaster economically.
Corruption is something every Serb complains about when their favorite party is not in power, so I wouldn't put too much weight in it, but of course anyone who thinks there wasn't plenty of corruption is deluding themselves.
2) The Radicals, i.e. SRS, always had a large support and repeatedly threatened to usurp power in the 00s being very close to a majority. This constantly forsed the former Democratic Opposition of Serbia parties who ousted Milošević into strange and unprincipled coalitions which soured the mood in their electorate very much. After a decade of stagnation, of enduring the growing pains of baby capitalism and of no increase in living standards, coupled with the incessant pressure and blackmail over the Hague and Kosovo from the west, many had simply enough.
The SNS branch of SRS realized the approach of the Radicals wasn't working, so they went from a radical to a moderate party, significantly changing their rhetoric and legitimately promising cooperation with the west. However, it still had it's 'nationalistic credo' intact, so it seemed at the time like the best-of-both-worlds party that very much appealed to centrist voters. Once the far-left abandoned Tadić because of his reluctance to bow to western powers over Kosovo, Tadić's fate was sealed.
3) Serbs always do this schtick. The current ruler is always 'the worst ever' and every single previous ruler gets reanalyzed in a positive way, even frikkin' Milošević who was an unmitigated disaster. When Koštunica was in power, he was the worst ever, then when Tadić regained power suddenly Koštunica's tenure was completely reappraised. Now it's the same thing.
My honest opinion is that there isn't that much difference between Tadić's rule and Vučić's. Both of them had/have a political program which appealed to the centrist electorate. Serbia is not as polarized as in the west where the lines between liberals and conservatives are sharply drawn. In Serbia, the electorate has very much felt burned by both the extreme right due to the wars of the 90s and the extreme left whose political program is openly directed by the west. Any politician who wants power in Serbia is going to have to appeal to the center.

West-Razzmatazz2@reddit
He is, in fact, Serbian extremist and his views towards Croatia don’t differ then average Serbian war criminal.
He was called ustaša probably by some Serbian extremist who doesn’t like his politics. Calling somebody Croat/ustaša or Albanian/Šiptar is commin language in Serbia even in public life, on TV, in politics etc.
vlaada7@reddit
Not an ustaša supporter, but in retrospect he was a weak president, although a civil and well spoken one. Arguably, enabled the comeback of Milošević’s SPS party back to power, which they, in return, used to stab him in the back (figuratively) and in the next elections align with the renegade wing of the Šešelj’s radical party, the SNS, with which Serbia still hasn’t manage to free itself from. Of course this might be a bit of a simplistic view, since also after the 2000. overthrow of Milošević there never was any proper investigation to anything his government and party did, which, in large part can also be attributed to Koštunica, but that is a whole another can of worms.
