How many lyrics from the heydays are slapping you in the brain today? This one hit me randomly this week...

O' beautiful, for spacious skies
Now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie
-- End of the Innocence, Don Henley 1989

That whole "I'm Mr. Vain" song from the 90s. Been stuck in my head for 2 days. I'm considering a lobotomy. I heard it enough back then. Walk into the supermarket, this song was playing. Go to the drugstore, this song was playing again.

at least it wasn’t rednex ‘cotton eye joe’. for me, that’s more of an ear worm than’baby shark’!

This is what I use for brain bleach when that happens to me:

Some day in the not too distant future, when i'm in the nursing home, i'll be seated in the sun room muttering to myself. the staff will think i'm just a crazy old coot. but for those who know...

The guy who sang that fish heads song played Lennier in Babylon 5

This came up in the rotation & I had to replay it a few times.
I must've dreamed a thousand dreams Been haunted by a million screams But I can hear the marching feet They're moving into the street Now, did you read the news today? They say the danger's gone away But I can see the fire's still alight Burning into the night There's too many men Too many people making too many problems And there's not much love to go 'round Can't you see this is a land of confusion? This is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given Use them and let's start trying To make it a place worth living in Oh, Superman, where are you now? When everything's gone wrong somehow The men of steel, these men of power Are losing control by the hour And this is the time, this is the place So we look for the future But there's not much love to go 'round Tell me why this is a land of confusion This is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given Use them and let's start trying To make it a place worth living in I remember long ago Ooh, when the sun was shining And all the stars were bright All through the night In the wake of this madness As I held you tight So long ago I won't be coming home tonight My generation will put it right We're not just making promises That we know we'll never keep There's too many men Too many people making too many problems And there's not much love to go 'round Can't you see this is a land of confusion? Now this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying To make it a place worth fighting for This is the world we live in And these are the names we're given Stand up and let's start showing Just where our lives are going to.

The cover of that song by Disturbed is also good.

This has been a constant, almost since 2016. But the Phil Collins that's been echoing in my skull even more recently has been "I Don't Care Anymore" - 1982, especially with all the 25th Amendment talk. "'Cause I've been talking to the people that you call your friends, and it seems to me there's a means to an end - They don't care anymore."
beermaker@reddit
You can hear his drum skins literally bruise on that track... Stunning studio work. Take Me Home is a close second for me. You can barely pick out Peter Gabriel and Annie Lennox singing backup.

Not the most famous song from Speaking in Tongues, but one I remember: "Making Flippy Floppy":

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies Leavin' vapour trails against a blood red sky Movin' in from the East toward the West With Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes! But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming Honey you've got another thing coming If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave Islam is rising The Christians mobilising The world is on its elbows and knees It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds It's war, she cried, It's war, she cried, this is war Drop your possessions, all you simple folk You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack You'll watch the ships out of harbour And the bodies come floating back If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today He'd be gunned down cold by the C.I.A. Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart But God didn't build himself that throne God doesn't live in Israel or Rome God belong to the yankee dollar God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah God doesn't even go to church And God won't send us down to Allah to burn No, God will remind us what we already know That the human race is about to reap what it's sown The world is on its elbows and knees It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds Armageddon days are here again
The The from fucking 1989... it's almost like we can't even help ourselves bombing the brown people in the desert.

From the same album (which absolutely SLAPS):
When you cast your eyes upon the skylines of this once proud nation Can you sense the fear and the hatred Growing in the hearts of its population? And our youth, oh youth, are being seduced By the greedy hands of politics and half-truths
The beaten generation The beaten generation Reared on a diet of prejudice and misinformation The beaten generation The beaten generation Open your eyes Open your imagination
We're pierced and beaten by the gasoline fumes And hypnotized by the satellites Into believing what is good and what is right You may be worshipping the temples of mammon Or lost in the prisons of religion But can you still walk back to happiness When there's nowhere left to run?
The beaten generation The beaten generation Reared on a diet of prejudice and misinformation The beaten generation The beaten generation Open your eyes Open your imagination
And they send in the special police To deliver us from liberty and keep us from peace They'll mold the words that fill upon their tongues When they tell us justice is being done That freedom lives in the barrels of a long gun
The beaten generation The beaten generation Reared on a diet of prejudice and misinformation The beaten generation The beaten generation Open your eyes Open your imagination

BOWING DOWN TO MY FELLOW the The fans. FUCK YEAH. BOTH from Mind Bomb. Both songs going through my head since November 6, 2024. Matt played Amegeddon Days (are here again) on his Ensoulment concert. You better believe I was singing that one.
Another the The to add: "Heartland". This verse: "Well it ain't written on the papers, but it's written on the walls. The way this country's dividing to fall. So the cranes are moving on the skyline trying to knock down this town. But the stains on the Heartland can never be removed from this country that's SICK, SAD and CONFUSED."

I’ve had the lyrics to “The Idiots Are Taking Over” by NOFX stuck in my head for about forever. It’s never been more spot on than now.

Barry McGuire's vocal track was not supposed to be the final version of the recording, but a copy of the rough mix was acquired by a disc jockey. The disc jockey began playing it. The song was an hit because it was so raw and real and the less “real” vocals were never recorded.

Not a giant U2 fan, but The Joshua Tree is still an epic album and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For has been on repeat in my skull this morning. Also Lost for Words on Floyd's "Division Bell." ...I must be having a rough day.

None. Because I rarely listen to music with vocals. For the precise reason of preventing the lunacy you are experiencing.

Just letting you know the voices in your head don't have to be there
HappyFatLabs@reddit (OP)
Just letting you know your delivery comes off as sanctimonious claptrap. And I wager I've lived long enough to know far better about what *has* to be in my head.

I prefer to be in full control of my brain
YMMV
HappyFatLabs@reddit (OP)
Observing what's in my head, or lyrics that struck me as poignant, if not prescient, is not the same as being somehow stricken with an ailment. And anyone in "full control" of their brain wouldn't keep expelling energy on what's clearly beneath them (in their mind, with no music). Shine on.

I would say I hope you find someone who values your opinion someday, but the more you comment, the less I'd wish that on anyone. So, instead, I hope you comment something of value somewhere. Here's not looking good for you.
Yeahhhhbut@reddit
Given that you're compulsively responding to every comment, it doesn't appear that you're actually in control of your brain at all.
Exponential-777@reddit
Quite the contrary. I'm very in control of my brain. It's rude to not reply. There are no compulsions. It's called having manners. And having nothing better to do.
GeneralMalaise99@reddit
Huh? I'm curious how you believe vocals in music leads to lunacy and what your definition of lunacy is
Exponential-777@reddit
Inability to control the voices in your head is a precursor to schizophrenia and dementia
The MTV music is literally driving y'all crazy
GeneralMalaise99@reddit
Getting a song stuck in your head isn't "an inability to control voices in your head". Also, that's not a precursor to dementia and schizophrenia. It's a symptom of psychosis. Are you scared that hearing human voices will also lead to psychosis? How do you live a normal life? That seems like a mental illness itself
Exponential-777@reddit
You say that like psychosis is a good thing
GeneralMalaise99@reddit
I think there may be a comprehension of reality issue here
Exponential-777@reddit
90% of humans experience earworms and one third find them to be annoying and disruptive. People actually get psych meds for earworms.
Meanwhile, I don't get them because I gave up on shitty MTV bug in your ear music a long time ago.

Ticking away The moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours In an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground In your hometown
Waiting for someone Or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine Staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long And there is time to kill today And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

This hit me when I was younger than it probably should have. That said, these days have made my mind return to The Wall, and especially Run with the ICE raids, as well as The Trial, as I fantasize about his future at the Hague. Our history speaks in thunder from a thousand village halls
In blood and sweat and sacrifice in honouring every call
So the forces gather against the thorn a-piercing in the side
A brave new world is beckoning so the older world must die
In the offices of the city at all the tables of oak and power
The snares are laid and baited for the approaching of the hour
A hundred justifications and the presses are ready to roll
The gateways to the nation they are firmly under control
On! On! On! Cried the leaders at the back....
