History of Linux: a timeline (Pt. 2)
Posted by PizzaSpaghetLasagna@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 46 comments
Hello r/linux, it's me again, Marco. I'm releasing a new version of "History of Linux Project" (HOLP).
This release is good enough, but the timeline still needs lots of work. I'm planning to release a non-alpha version, v1.0, before Summer. I'd like your help with:
- adding important events that led to Linux,
- fact checking already present content,
- and giving opinions on readability and accessibility.
Please, let me know if you are interested!

Can I download this when it's finished? Ty

Yes of course.
artin2007majidi@reddit
why is vs code there? Genuinely, what does it have to do with linux?
lunarequest@reddit
Have to agree, if your adding vscode why not atom or electron lol
KlePu@reddit
Maybe replace it (or make a nice faded 50:50) with
codium's iconHAL9000thebot@reddit
as big as linus torvalds lol
AdventurousFly4909@reddit
The base is open source. Only a few things are added in vscode.
ddyess@reddit
Probably just because it's popular on Linux, but Electron or even Atom (the first Electron app) would probably be more relevant.

Your note on Red Hat reads as though they were a sub of IBM in 1995. The acquisition was not finalized until 2019.

At the end of the day, nothing compares to the contribution of whoever gets Photoshop to run in Wine.

Sorry for the random order...
glxgearsicon for the Mesa box <3selinuxdeserves its own box ;)svnandscm- and that, luckily, githas replaced most of 'em. And maybe (!) the reason why Linus "had to" invent itxzincident its own box. This IMHO was the closest to Linux getting fucked hard as of yet ;)...and last: Nice improvements over the last version! Have a heartfelt upvote!

Thank you. This is the kind of feedback I was eagerly expecting. I will keep all of these in mind when publishing the next version. Consider this post just a "showcase" of sorts, the timeline is nowhere near to be complete (it needs lots of polishing, missing events, etc.), and I need people to be aware of the project so that I can siphon the help into it.
MagicalPancakes404@reddit
why is project64 there?
real_carddamom@reddit
Lots of WTF's on here... Too much to count...
Please remove the graph and try again...

I think GTK was originally made for GIMP and Gnome and other linux applications adopted it later.
acdcfanbill@reddit
Yeah, the G in GTK originally stood for GIMP as in GIMP Tool Kit.
wintrmt3@reddit
It begins with bullshit right off the start: they were not tasked with creating an operating system, it was a side project.
DiamondRocks22@reddit
Hey when you are talking raspberry pi os you say x32 but that refers to a very specific x86-64 implementation which not only is not used very much anymore but also you most certainly are not going for here

First live CD distribution commercially available? Yggdrasil in 1992. I ran this for a couple of years around that time. Kind of a big thing to skip.
abbidabbi@reddit
There are a couple of spelling mistakes

Nice work
aliendude5300@reddit
Ubuntu should be FAR more noteworthy.
MatchingTurret@reddit
No X386 and XFree86? Linux getting a GUI should be noteworthy.
lxstig@reddit
Great job!
I think PHP should also be mentioned because of LAMP. (I see LAM but not P on the image so)
PizzaSpaghetLasagna@reddit (OP)
See previous post here. Since the subreddit does not allow albums, I cannot fully show the timeline off. Please, visit the GitHub repository for a 400ppi version.
I am planning to make It printable, but a large enough frame would be needed, because there's lots of text and it is very small.
I'd appreciate your support, thank you.
