My go to snack at the moment, fermented sprats.
Spirited_Ad6221@reddit
Were you raised as a stray cat?
OkiDokiPanic@reddit
Bro is penguinmaxing.
CommieDog2525@reddit
How often do you have this "snack". You could get mercury poisoning
VicariousOne1199@reddit
Bro does a handler at Sea World feed you during snack time, too?

I don't really get why people here are so weirded out, isn't this a fairly common thing in scandinavian countries?
SudhaTheHill@reddit
I’m sorry but are you a dolphin or sea lion or seal????
Manrito@reddit
GrynaiTaip@reddit
This photo makes them look quite large. Sprats are tiny fishes, about the size of your index finger. Canned ones are sold whole, and you eat them whole. They're quite tasty.

AppUnwrapper1@reddit
Aren’t seals and sea lions the same thing?
MrDTD@reddit
In the same family, but not same species.
Heartfeltregret@reddit
they are pinnipeds, there are many species of seals, and sea lions themselves have several subspecies as well. Sea lions are eared seals, not „true seals“(earless seals)… i personally think it’s chill to call all pinnipeds, Eared, Earless, even walruses, Seals - but im confident this is one of those weird things people will get legitimately angry about lol. Like, calling all cetaceans Whales.
MrDTD@reddit
Yeah, I just mean it's more like canids instead of dogs as comparison?
Heartfeltregret@reddit
yeah exactly

Varvat0s@reddit
Why was this down voted?
magnustranberg@reddit
This is genuinely an evil workplace snack.
aGoryLouie@reddit
now to put it in the shared microwave

Don’t forget raw broccoli crowns for extra fiber!!
dtwhitecp@reddit
I prefer to combine mine with popcorn, set the timer for 15 minutes, and go home.
agoia@reddit
With some egg to make a nice and inoffensive little scramble
friftar@reddit
Canned sardines on their own don't really smell that strongly, the oil keeps most of that in. Tilt a window while you eat, no problem.
I always keep a few cans and some crackers in my desk drawer, great emergency snack if you forget to bring something or don't have a lot of time.
poxteeth@reddit
As the former coworker of two people who used to eat canned sardines at their desks, everyone can smell it.
RepresentativeDig656@reddit
I disagree. I love them but they smell like the dead fish they are. And no one at work has said anything but they’re talking about you.
SN: I just had some last week with onions and mustard, after 25 years! No I didn’t go out
alavantrya@reddit
I choose the trashcan for my fish can very intentionally thank you very much.
Fit_Carpet_364@reddit
For extra fun, put it in the cans&bottles recycling that only gets dumped twice a week.

I bet you just swallow these bones and all
Cythiriya@reddit
Good god I could never! How do you eat those? Just like that?! Do you cook them or prepare them somehow?!
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Well they're fermented whole so there's a bit of prep, you have to rip their heads off and remove the guts first :D
Those are no different from anchovies actually, wile you can eat them as is they're better on some strong tasting bread as a snack (with beer) or to add a touch of taste to otherwise bland foods, like plain potatoes.
Cythiriya@reddit
Thank you for the reply! Genuinely fascinated in a horrified way 😅 I eat fish but never had fish that looks like fish lol
waywardandweird@reddit
But, really...
Nightbird88@reddit
How are they edible like this? Pickled? Thr lightest cook of all time? I think I see innards.
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
They're fermented/brined whole (also, those are store bought), you have to remove the head and the guts yourself. The bones go soft and the meat is really delicate (first time i've actually managed not to mangle the whole pot) and you eat the fish as is, usually on some nice dense bread with onions or with potatoes.
stefanica@reddit
I wish I liked fish like this more. It's very appealing to me, especially served as you say, but just too strong. I do like smoked fish though! It isn't very common here in the US compared to elsewhere, but there's a smoke shack a couple towns away that sells all kinds of smoked fish, small whole fish or big hunks of larger fish. So good with some cream cheese on dark rye bread with dill.
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Yup smoked fish also hits the spot. If you can get your hands on dried/salted fish it goes exceptionally well with beer.
These are quite strong yes, the trick is to pair them with either something equally as strong (rye bread + onions) or with something really bland like just plain boiled potatoes. Also making them at home is
The east european market is full of brined fish with way milder flavours (seriously the variety is nuts). While up north they're more of the dried/salted variety. I think you can find maatjes (dutch salted herring) in the US, these are also great.
stefanica@reddit
I'll keep trying! My husband adores all manner of preserved fish, so there won't be any issue sharing the experiments. 😂 Thanks!
Nightbird88@reddit
I dont mind canned tuna or canned smoke trout but other than that no thanks. My partner is all about preserved fish. I dont love a huge amount of smoke salmon on my bagel, just a little, he loads it on.
Nightbird88@reddit
Thanks!
jujujuice92@reddit
You don't have any crackers and hot sauce, just something to not look like the office penguin?
aeternae_republicae@reddit
Get some hot sauce and crackers dude, tasting yourself like a seal or dolphin.
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Those get covered in onions and some neutral oil, then go onto some nice rye bread (not the white sweet cake shit). There's no need for sauce
bisexual_pinecone@reddit
Just because Japanese milk bread doesn't go with fish doesn't mean it's shit.
stefanica@reddit
Tuna mayo salad on milk bread sounds pretty good, ngl.
big_duo3674@reddit
Make sure to microwave it thoroughly once you get the onions in!
mwpdx86@reddit
How fermented are we talkin here?
currentlyRedacted@reddit
It’s good The Penguin has stopped eating noses at the office.
lakotazz@reddit
Would probably like. Are they stinky?
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Not at all, they smell like slightly fishy gingerbread.
fluffycatscrote@reddit
That somehow makes it worse.
DaadJowk@reddit
Says the person who’s eating them daily… fermented fish stinks.
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Depends how you ferment it "kilka" does not stink, if it does it's gone bad. It smells mostly of spices it's been left in.
Remarkable-Manager56@reddit
As a person who used to regularly eat these, they are stinky. And fingers are stinky after eating them, as well as your breath. Probably not the best food to eat at the workplace.
blckout_junkie@reddit
My hubs won't even eat salmon at work for fear of some thinking it stinks
Xfuck1tX@reddit
MarshMllow420@reddit
Like why? There so many other options out there and you choose to eat like a fucking penguin? Why..
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Those are tasty as frick, salty and very savory. Go well with booze. They're also part of the holiday feasts around where i'm from, i would guess any scandinavian would also confirm.

As a finn, I envy you. I'd add just dry tough rye bread and live off of this for days.
Glasofruix@reddit (OP)
Rye bread and finelly chopped onions, with some boiled potatoes.
anniecet@reddit
My cat wouldn’t even go there. And you took it to work? Your coworkers talk shit about you behind your back. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if they said it to your face after seeing/smelling this.

Maybe try something like the norther German specialty green herring
https://www.wir-fischen.sh/produkte/rezepte/detailansicht/gruene-heringe/
It's simply fresh herring, salted and turned in flour, then fried in butter.
The ones you don't eat can be marinaded sweet and sour.
sgt_Berbatov@reddit
Surprised your coworkers didn't tell you to post it to HR.
