What's the issue? Incorrect load rating on the tires?
That load should be within the capabilities of even a 250/2500 truck.
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
No idea. Combo rating might require cdl.
bigblackglock17@reddit
I thought I heard if it’s over 9k for the trailer, it needs a CDL.
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
I’ve tried so hard to figure this conversation out, but I never could.
obsolete_broccoli@reddit
Combination weight greater than 26,000 pounds GCWR requires a CDL
A towed unit less than 10,000 pounds GVWR needs a Class B
A towed unit greater than 10,000 pounds GVWR needs a Class A
bigblackglock17@reddit
Texasdps has a click through website. Maybe it’s a Texas thing but it said if it was over 9k, it instantly required a CDL iirc.
ParticularArrival111@reddit
That's wrong. It only requires a cdl a if both vehicles combined are over 26k. If truck weights 14,000 and trailer weighs 11000 no cdl. If truck weighs more than 26,000 and trailer weighs less than 10,000 cdl b. If trailer is more than 10000 and truck is atleast 26000 then cdl a. It's really not complicated
SubarcticFarmer@reddit
Apparently is is because this depends on the state.
Federally you are limited to 10k for non RV bumper pull. Combination vehicles, which would include gooseneck or fifth wheels can go over 10k for a trailer as long as the GCWR is under 26k.
So if tow vehicle GVWR is under 26k, any trailer up to 10k. If a gooseneck or 5th wheel it's the greater of 10k or a trailer that pits the combination at 26k.
ParticularArrival111@reddit
I think we're agreeing. Although most states regulations may differ slightly there is no state that would require you to have a class a if your gcvwr is under 26,001. When I did hotshot my truck was 10,000 and trailer was 16,000. Didn't require a cdl. However you still have to follow hos medical card and all the other stuff. No ifta or apportioned plates though.
bigblackglock17@reddit
I ended up going back to the Texas website chart thing and I guess it’s not 9k. I guess I remembered wrong or something.
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Still unsure
Guilded_PaperClip@reddit
Did you look at it? It’s actually pretty easy to follow. A simple step by step on yes or no if you need a cdl. Oh well
finn4489@reddit
If the truck, trailer, and load combined are less than 26k lbs no cdl required; unless needing endorsement such as passenger or hazmat then class C is required. If over 26k lbs if the vehicle is over 26k and trailer under 10k only class B is required. If over 26k and trailer is over 10k class A is required.
There are exceptions for these such as campers but a mini dozer can easily be 15k+pounds just on its own, add a 4k lb trailer and 7k lb truck you can very quickly get into where you are over 26k total.
leadpoem@reddit
Not a 1/2 ton truck in the picture
Guilded_PaperClip@reddit
This is incorrect information
HERE is a nice flow chart on when a cel is required.
theFoamBorn@reddit
https://cdlresources.org/flowcharts/determining-class-of-cdl-required/
yes-disappointment@reddit
as a northeastern I thought if it had air brakes or if its for hire, a cdl is required.
Apmaddock@reddit
It’s got everything to do with the GVWR of the combo. That’s all.
04limited@reddit
Probably over gross cargo weight rating. Buddy got stopped pulling a dump trailer to the scrap yard in a 1-ton dually. non CDL holder. GCWR came out to a little over 28k just due to the truck having a higher truck rating. However, the dump trailer wasn’t fully loaded so he wasn’t over weight(they never scaled it). They just got him for non CDL.
It’s one of the reasons Ford and GM offers 3/4 tons with their 1-ton suspension(heavy tow package). You maintain the lower GVWR but the truck can handle the extra weight should it need to
undefined_user@reddit
I assume its this or its at least not helping. Rare to find low profile tires that are also 10 ply load range E rated. Even then if you found the tires. The rim's might not be specced for that kind of load.
FlappyJ1979@reddit
Looks like the intersection of the Pa turnpike and 13 Bristol Pike?
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
You got it
Idiotwithaphone79@reddit
That's gonna be one hell of a tow bill!
bigblackglock17@reddit
lol, come to Texas, the land of brodozers.
angrydeuce@reddit
Hey at least this one is actually doing work that requires a truck.
99% of the big ass lifted brodozers I see on the roads, usually straddling the lane, are pristine and have obviously never hauled anything more than their owners big fat ass and their usual 50 dollar McDonalds drive thru order.
leadpoem@reddit
But he doesn't need the lift, the 22in rims, or the rubber band tires. All things that ruin a trucks ability to tow. There is no reason to believe any of those things are rated to tow a dump trailer with a skid steer in it. I'd feel better if he just stuck to mall crawling.
And people are always wondering why I have stock tires and steelies on my F-350 Dually. Lol
bigblackglock17@reddit
It’s true but I’ll see this same setup, brodozer, dump trailer, skid steer, and they’re driving in traffic like a race car.
Radiant_Swan187@reddit
Like I hate talking shit on my own people. But goddamn man. Ive been running Texas past few weeks. Motherfuckers are crazy
Dead_Namer@reddit
Is there anything dumber vehicle wise than a pick up with super lo pro tyres and then using it for towing?
roberttheiii@reddit
See my extremely serious comment about this
roberttheiii@reddit
When are you truckers going to get with the program and put low profile tires on your rigs? The way I can tell someone with a huge pickup truck is serious and works their truck HARD is if it has 2 inches of sidewall to work with. That gives you the best possible ridge and protects your wheels from damage. Pick up the slack and get those low pros on your rig! Wheel spinners also don't count toward your 80k gross weight, similar exemption to an APU
Co_Duh@reddit
Imagine being so fucked up they gotta double tow your ass.
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
The wrecker for the dump trailer too
KTMman200@reddit
Because the trailer is most likely has a GVWR over 10k lbs, and the pickup driver had a class C licence. If they hooked that to the back of the flat bed that has the pickup, it would put the flatbed over its GVWR, which would require the cops to have to pull over and either red tag or impound the flatbed, pickup, and trailer.
Co_Duh@reddit
Genuinely impressive.
DrSideShowbob@reddit
Some states will have you follow oversize rules. If you can reduce the load you have to. Might be why the tow company has two trucks. Some states over look it or dont care
If i had to tow people through New Mexico they always made a fit if i had to tow a truck with doubles. It was stupid.
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
This tow company kinda runs the area. Contracts with the turnpike and state highway. They’ve towed my day cab with 7 car trailer together before.
rawfuelinjection@reddit
In Illinois your truck and trailer must be properly plated for weight, most people get standard B (8000lbs) plates for their pickup trucks and as soon as you hook the trailer you're over weight. It's all about money, people don't want to spend more money on D plates (up to 14,000lbs) and they get fucked. Then you have other things to worry about like tongue weight, etc...
Edge2110@reddit
Is it possible he just broke down? Those are local cops not PA dot
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
This spot is a dot checkpoint. They get you into this little round about getting on and off Pa turnpike
Edge2110@reddit
Gotcha. It’s been a while since I’ve been over there
NewMexicoVaquero@reddit
Let me guess, truck is squatted and his tongue weight was causing him to squat further down?
Alarming-Inspector86@reddit
I live around that area and there are tons of trucks like that towing things they shouldn't glad they're cracking down
ResidentComplaint19@reddit (OP)
I park down the street. Totally agree.
Leto_ll@reddit
The downside of that particular tax writeoff lol
