Is it socially acceptable to play loud music through a speaker at the beach?

I live in a beach town, and every time the sun is out I think to myself "ah, a perfect day to sit by the water and read my book". I arrive, I relax, and almost every single time a group of teenagers will arrive shortly thereafter and blast some house or D&B through a speaker. It usually bothers me so much that I leave to find another spot, which can be tricky since it's a small, crowded beach. I see these groups playing loud music so frequently that it makes me wonder whether it is socially acceptable. Am I being a grumpy old woman?
ImpressiveStorm8914@reddit
No it is not acceptable, socially or otherwise. Anything that disturbs others is not acceptable, the beach is there for all to enjoy.
LiamoLuo@reddit
Ultimately depends on the volume. Are they actually blasting it at an incredibly loud volume, or can you just hear it in the background? If it's a reasonable volume and just background noise I wouldn't mind as much, if it's genuinely being cranked to an excessive volume I'd likely just ask them to turn it down a bit. Generally I've found a quick conversation with people solves a lot of issues and it's incredibly rare it ever gets confrontational as long as your tone is fine on approach.
Pricklestickle@reddit
Oh my god, an actual sensible reasonable answer! A bit of noise is part and parcel of being in a public place. If one person's ideal day at the beach involves silence, and another's involves music, the two need to find a way to coexist.
bacon_cake@reddit
Even without value judgements on my part, there's literally no compromise possible there.
Pricklestickle@reddit
What does that mean?
bacon_cake@reddit
I mean the two can't coexist.
The bit prior was just me pointing out that I'm not making a judgement as to who's right in the scenario, just that the two positions are incompatible.
Pricklestickle@reddit
Why is compromise not possible though?
bacon_cake@reddit
I just feel like if you're going somewhere for peace and quiet you aren't going to be happy with anyone playing audible music; you'd consider it rude, unfair, and unacceptable. On the flip-side if you're going somewhere in public to play loud music you're probably self-centred enough not to think about other people in the first place or, if asked to turn it down, would probably think that other people should mind their own business to the level you mind yours, that is to say, exclusively.
Pricklestickle@reddit
Ok, so you're saying people who don't like music in public are inflexible and unhappy unless they get their way? Seems harsh. Also did you miss the person above saying they normally find people respond positively to being asked to turn their music down?
bacon_cake@reddit
I'd be surprised if they aren't, if you don't want music in public I can't see why you'd be happy hearing music in public, regardless of volume. But maybe that's my own biases.
And yeah I did miss that above, it's reassuring to hear though because in several of my own experiences that's been far from the case.
I'm probably jaded given I've had noisy neighbours far too many times.
Musashi1596@reddit
We already have that way, they are called headphones
Pricklestickle@reddit
Headphones send a clear "don't talk to me" message though. Some people want to listen to music and also remain open to others.
LiamoLuo@reddit
An individual, absolutely. But this is a group. That's more challenging for a headphone experience?
Musashi1596@reddit
The comment I replied to did say one person…
Pricklestickle@reddit
I was making a point. No need to take it so literally. How about:
"If some people's ideal day at the beach involves silence, and others' involves music and socialising, the two groups need to find a way to coexist."
Better?
Proper-Television856@reddit
Last time me and my friends went to the coast my friend took his huge speaker system
We played music all day and as the sun was setting an elderly couple came over, we were fully expecting them to ask us to turn the speakers down but instead they thanked us for the music and requested a song, they then danced to their favourite song while the sunset then walked together hand in hand... It was honestly adorable
Rude_Sheepherder_714@reddit
Absolutely not.

I’ve experienced a variety of scenarios that lean towards music on the beach and no music on the beach…
I’m going to sit on the fence and say that it depends…
Obviously, expect music at a beach club or gala etc… but don’t be a cock end and upset the calm if you’re clearly visiting a beach that’s being used for a much more relaxed and natural vibe…

Just choose a quiet rural beach i have been to !
BrieflyVerbose@reddit
It's a fairly famous beach. I remember being a child, Demi Moore was recording a film on the beach (I don't recall the name of the film), this was like 2004ish. Anyway, we're hanging around outside because that's all there was to do and this limo stops in the village and as the window opens it's her.
She sticks her head out and shouts "I love you Newborough!" and my cousin who was like 14 at the time replied with "Why, this place is a shit hole!"
Strange seeing so many expensive looking cars and limos pass through when we were a tiny village where most the people are fairly poor or on the bread line.
Rigamorph@reddit
(At least Newborough is so huge it's rarely truly crowded, especially if you head down to the Abermenai point, or even over to the other side of Llanddwyn island. Also: strong winds usually mean you can sit upwind of the inconsiderate people 🤪. I don't deny that it's annoying though)

As a resident in Brighton, I'm going with Brighton no too. Sorry, unless you are right next to a bar or something that is also already making noise, anything above a whisper of music that travels beyond your immediate environs is a selfish dick move. Brighton might be a party/tourist town, but the beach is not a night club, and anywhere you impose your ideas and tastes on countless others with no consent given or asked, YTA (wrong sub, but hey).
Get earphones if you need music, find an empty bit of beach if you have to broadcast it. But when anyone else has it imposed on them, that's not right. I'd be tossing that speaker in the sea (I wouldn't too scared, but I'd be day-dreaming about it)
levezvosskinnyfists7@reddit
We also have On The Beach festival which is basically the final boss of cunts with massive speakers at the beach
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
I was referring to the competing music from bars literally right on the beach !
Independent_Push_159@reddit
Fair enough, didn't get that from your comment. The bars are relatively geographically restricted in brighton, plenty of 'quiet' beach away from them that still gets plagued by the selfish few imposing their music on everyone. Arguably even near the bars though, bringing your own music is imposing, and makes audio chaos with competing tunes. I don't go near those parts so not really something I see
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
4 tunes rather than 3 doesn't bother me !
Independent_Push_159@reddit
haha - and half a mile away doesn't bother me!
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
Activist being able to hear something on the edge of my hearing drives me insane!
bacon_cake@reddit
I can't agree with that. Just because you turn up first doesn't mean you get to dictate the vibe for everyone else - it's a public space.
I went for a walk down the river yesterday and there was a group of people blasting music, I talked to multiple people who were disappointed.
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit

BrieflyVerbose@reddit
My car was off the road for like 2 months this time last year. I had to use the bus for the first time in 20 years.
The amount of people playing music or having loud phone conversations on loudspeaker was really pissing me off. One time, bus was half full and these young lads (late teens) were playing some fucking awful rap music. I asked them to turn it off because nobody wanted to hear it and they said no. So I said "Okay, if that's the battle you want" and I got my phone out and started blasting Archspire while looking at them.
I'd say they lasted about 15 seconds listening to some technical death metal before before they turned it off. I thanked them for turning it off, but Immade it clear that that's what their rap music sounded like to people that don't like rap music. It's the same feeling.
Taken_Abroad_Book@reddit
I had to resort to that to make the 60 year old dinnerlady next door fuck up with the music
BrieflyVerbose@reddit
Well the idea came from one of my mates, who's also a metal head and has never got his driving licence. So it wasn't really my idea, but he said people's aversion to death metal (or deathcore or whatever heavy subgenre of metal you can think of) is so strong that it's worked every time for him.
I've only used it once and it worked. I'm assuming it worked for you too?!

It's the ultimate main character syndrome, isn't it? Nothing ruins the sound of the ocean quite like a budget speaker tryig—I mean trying—to handle a bass-heavy track it wasn't built for. Personally, I think beach etiquette should include a 'silent disco' rule or at least a decibel limit that doesn't compete with a jet engine. You're not being grumpy; you're just a victim of the 'my playlist is a gift to the world' delusion. Maybe start readig—I mean reading—your book out loud into a megaphone next time and see how they like the plot spoilers.

Competitive_Rub_9590@reddit
I haven’t got an issue with portable speakers at the beach as long as they’re at an acceptable volume and not right next to me
HugsforCuddles@reddit
It is never acceptable to play loud music in a public space unless for official events imho - rude to say least - why should anyone unwillingly be forced to listen to other people choice of music? Plus those of us who have sensitive hearing suffer big time thanks to those who insist on playing music without headphones. Unkind, rude, anti-social.
Total-System877@reddit
The thing about those little Bluetooth speakers is they are very, very, throw-into-the-sea-able
TheGeordieGal@reddit
Not acceptable in my books. Something quiet you and your friends can hear, fair enough. But not something you can hear clearly from 200m away.
Same goes for people in the countryside. I’ll be out hiking in the middle of nowhere, stop for some lunch with a scenic view and people will arrive and start blasting music on their phones. Just take the time to enjoy nature or if you want to play music and be a dick, don’t do it right next to other people.
WashingTurds@reddit
You’re not wrong, is it inconsiderate? Yea a little bit although the beach is a public space, and it depends what mind frame you are in as well as the contrast to what mind frame others are in. For example if I was in the Caribbean on a beach I’d love to hear some reggae playing. Try one day asking them if they want to play. I am wondering if that would change your perception on it. I fear jf you really want the quiet youre after it’s a library or in your own dwellings.
Zorolord@reddit
It's definitely a age demography as I doubt young folk see a problem with it. I guess it would depend on the scenario for me (old) if they were playing horrible music too loud it would do my head in.
socialily218@reddit
No. Epitomy of selfish. Sorry if that makes me a Karen these days but I don't understand why anyone would come into beautiful nature and fill it with loud stressful disruptive noise. Just my view 🙃
Severus_1987@reddit
A bit of quiet music loud enough for just their group? That’s one thing and I can get along with that, I would just not sit nearby. But when it’s so loud it travels far outside where it needs to then it’s rubbish but unfortunately that’s what many people seem to be like these days, uncaring about others, just do whatever they want
Phat-Lines@reddit
I feel like people being uncaring about others and doing what they want isn’t even specific to ‘these days’. It’s just generally how a fair amount of people tend to go about their lives.
FenrisSquirrel@reddit
Sure, but people didn't have extremely loud mobile speakers back in the day
Severus_1987@reddit
Yeh fair point. Probably didn’t notice it as much as a kid/teen but certainly do now
autobulb@reddit
I think it's the accessibility to technology that makes it trivially easy to be a jerk nowadays so it's so much more noticeable. Back in the day™ if you wanted to play music in public you had to spend a decent amount of money on a portable stereo that would chew through single use batteries, and you could probably only play the radio or cassettes. Now, a Bluetooth speaker is as cheap as a tenner and it connects to anyone's phone wirelessly that has the entire world's library of music. It's cheap, easy, and attractive to do it, so people do it. They just couldn't as easily before. That's my theory anyway.

But no one is saying the kids can’t be there. Just that they should respect others are there too that might not want their music. They can be at the beach without music after all
Koholinthibiscus@reddit
Sorry I didn’t articulate my thought well; it’s that there’s limited spaces they can go and communally listen to music.
sunkathousandtimes@reddit
Parks, any of their homes and gardens, any open space anywhere? A park bench in the town even?
Typically there’s a stretch of beach for a town and that’s that - so people going to the beach and blasting music are excluding anyone who doesn’t want to hear it from using the beach at all (if they can’t find a stretch far enough away to not hear it). But they have all their homes and private spaces to choose from, plus literally any outdoor space - they just have to turn up with the speaker.
When it’s a reasonable volume it’s fine, but it’s when people are blasting it at top volume out of portable speakers that it impacts on other people.
Koholinthibiscus@reddit
I think people would complain if they were playing music in all of the areas you mentioned though.
sunkathousandtimes@reddit
And they’ll also complain about the beach - so why is it more suitable?
Koholinthibiscus@reddit
Yeah I never said it was more suitable. I live in a coastal town too. Even in the 90s/early 2000s we were always moved on from wherever we congregated, music or no music. People will always complain about teenagers tbh
abby-drugs@reddit
they didnt say it was more suitable, just said that is wasnt socially unacceptable to do so
CorpusCalossum@reddit
But why is the need of one person for quiet, considered more valid than the need of another person for music and celebration?
It smacks of puritanism really.
cdmisp@reddit
I think the point is there are limited spaces they can go and communally listen to music. A beach, is a decent place
CorpusCalossum@reddit
It seems to be part of the British disease that anyone doing anything other than looking at their stamp collection might possibly annoy someone else. When did everyone become so miserable? It is totally normal to play music at beaches and parks, some people have the volume too loud but it isn't really a big deal.
If I'm at the beach by myself I'll use my earphones, if I'm with friends we use a small speaker, it's fun and part of the day out.
magic_spurtle@reddit
I agree completely, it's like going to the beach or park and complaining people are letting their kids play everywhere - of course they are, that's the point. Sometimes there are going to be lines crossed but that part of being in public spaces and it's almost never a big problem, 90% of the time it's teenagers who are just being oblivious, as we all were
starderpderp@reddit
I'm a millennial born in the 90s, but I definitely remember my parents and their siblings talking about bringing a boom box to parks or beaches.
I also remember my own peers doing that at beaches back in the 2000s-2010s.
I don't know when having music in a social gathering became socially unacceptable.
Few_Macaron_9736@reddit
Yeah I don't see it as socially unacceptable depending on the noise level. Go to any park or beach in summer and you'll hear music I think that's relatively normal?
I do get it if someone's blasting music near you but that's when you just move to a different area?
_poptart@reddit
My partner and I have been to many British beaches over the past 10 years, especially with our now 8 year old son. Some of our favourite times have been when a group of people nearby are having fun playing reggae on a loud speaker on a packed beach in Bournemouth, or some party tunes on a hot day in Weymouth.
Sure, if someone’s banging out death metal on a quiet spring day then that’s not really acceptable - or you know, we’d just move down the beach.

They don't think you want to listen to their music. They don't think about you or anyone else at all.
They want to do something therefore they're entitled to do it and anyone who objects is out of line. That's about as far as their thought processes go.

escoces@reddit
The worst are people in their 50s and 60s watching reels or tiktok loudly in public. At least if it is music there's a tune that people nearby can theoretically enjoy.
Constant flicking to different videos with completely different audio and even rewatching the same video 4 or 5 times because they missed something is annoying as fuck.
Prothalanium@reddit
I am not a psychiatrist, but one sure way I have found for identifying narcissists, is to listen to the amount of noise they make.
Their sense of themselves as being special, makes them think that everybody should be able to hear their stupid conversation and enjoy their idiotic "music".
Avoid people who are loud and aggressive, your life will be quieter, happier and more peaceful.
Diligent_Explorer717@reddit
Yeah it is
Serious-Top9613@reddit
I’d say it depends on what kinds of music. Songs with cuss words in likely won’t go down well if there’s elderly people around, or parents that have young kiddos. That being said, the beaches near me have strict rules due to the fact it’s within a residential area (about 5/10 minutes from my old university campus).

No. No one wants to listen to anyone else's blaring music. That goes for my neighbour who thinks we all want to hear her scream Alexa play Neil diamond.
Sparknight@reddit
The idea of "socially acceptable" is bollocks anyway, they're not being intentionally disruptive; you're a grumpy old cow methinks
Sparknight@reddit
Would depend on the beach.
They're in a group, if the volume was an okay level for them all to hear within that space, then yeah, you're just grumpy. It's not like you can expect them to set up a silent disco on the beach with headphones, for example!
That space is available for them to use too, and I'd argue a beach, rather than a smaller park or somewhere is a better choice. Though if this is a really small beach then maybe?
SceneDifferent1041@reddit

No. It’s not your beach.
sindher@reddit
Yes - people enjoy things differently.
Leucurus@reddit
Yeah sure but if someone plays music out loud at the beach they are preventing everyone else form enjoying the beach differently to them. Everyone now has to enjoy the beach that person's way, with that person's choice of music. That person is not allowing other people to enjoy the beach their own way.
If that person wants to enjoy the beach with music they can get some headphones
Pricklestickle@reddit
But if someone demands quiet then aren't they also preventing everyone else from enjoying the beach differently to them? Headphones aren't practical for people in a group who want to listen to music together and socialise.
sindher@reddit
Exactly - People on here are just miserable cunts
Too-Tired-Editor@reddit
People enjoying things differently is WHY someone shouldn't get to set the listening agenda for an entire public space like that.
CoconutBandita@reddit
One person's enjoyment shouldn't come at the expense of others' enjoyment.
LiamoLuo@reddit
People enjoy many things, doesn't mean they should do them all in public and disturb a space for others. Wouldn't have a tug in public on the beach would you?
ben_jamin_h@reddit
Brighton beach, probably 20 years ago. Met my friends there, set up a BBQ, we all got settled in and cracked open some beers.
This guy rocks up about ten feet from us with a plastic wheelie bin. Opens it up, he's got a fucking drum kit in there. Proceeds to spend the next couple of hours playing some of the worst beats you've ever heard (I'm a drummer, I would know).
I fucking hate people who play loud music in public.
feriziD@reddit
I grew up in the US and I’m back here now and never go to the beach. It’s 100% normal and expected there and I never second guessed it. I wonder if it’s an American cultural thing that’s spreading with these responses?
In the US the only question I’ve seen is who was there first and if you set up next to someone too close who looks like they extra wouldn’t appreciate it. Generally people sleeping or reading sort of a thing or if they have their own event set up setting up too close. Definitely avoid anyone with a baby. If someone asks them to turn it down or pick a different spot though, at least if the beach isn’t totally packed, that’s almost always respected and a non issue. Totally packed beaches can lead to friction though but most side with the music bringer.
I saw a lot of people asking others to turn music up, thank them for going through the work of bringing a set up, asking to join or moving closer to the good music.
When I’ve seen people be rude to people because of their music, get mad when they showed up later or if they had other places to set up, most of the beach would give the rude person the stink eye and think they were entitled and they were the inconsiderate ones ruin peoples day when others were enjoying the music.
Don’t know if it’s the entire US, but if that’s spreading through TikTok, tv, or whatever, it might not be inconsiderate it might be oblivious that the expectations and norms are reversed because they saw the American ones.

There’s a guy in my local town who has a huge speaker strapped to his bike & goes round & round the one way system blaring out rave/techno/house music. I can’t work him out. It’s obviously for attention. Some love it, some hate it. I can be in queue for traffic, see him cycle past, go to supermarket & catch him again on the way round. It doesn’t bother me. The beach thing probably wouldn’t either
icarusballs@reddit
I used to live in Adelaide and there was a mid 50s guy that did the same up and down the beach promenade but he played jazz! I loved it tbh
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
People think the music they listen to says something about them that isnt apparent without it.. Its pitiful.
majomista@reddit
NO! I absolutely hate it. Sound travels so why should one person get to decide what other people hear at the beach?
It's the worst when you're enjoying yourself, listening to the sea (one of the absolute joys of being at the beach), and some fuckwit comes along thinking it's a good idea to play some shitty dance music and spoil it for everyone. It's just so self-entitled and inconsiderate.
JinzoFromSkaro@reddit
Yes, I'd say so. I play my music loud as possible in the car, and sometimes will take a speaker out on full volume if I'm walking. Public space means public, people shouldn't have to turn their music off because you want to read a book or whatever (who even does that in 2026 lmao?). You sound like somebody who studies stuff but doesn't listen to music lmao

At an appropriate volume it's fine if the beach has enough space that people can be out of earshot of it
One_Pangolin1766@reddit
Nuanced opinion is music is okay, loud is a problem
Depending on how comfortable you feel approaching them, it could be worth asking nicely if they could drop the volume - they genuinely might not know how loud they’re being
MudNext5256@reddit
No. The rule of thumb I always apply is ‘what if everyone was doing that?’ And in this case, it would be unbearable. It shows a complete lack of self awareness and a blatant disregard for anyone else’s good time. The question they should consider: what are the sheer odds that everyone within earshot categorically prefers my specific choice of artist and song to the peace that existed before I turned up’?’. There’s only one answer.

ambitioussandy@reddit
i often spend summer with my family who live right by the beach. my cousin (one of my favourite people ever but no awareness of made up social rules, he will talk to anyone and everyone about anything) and i went to the beach multiple times, and if it wasn’t busy then absolutely we would put some music on (we are 21 and 18) on a little speaker, (mostly the nearby festival lineup to learn the words before we went) but if it’s a busy day then we wouldn’t.
Character-Bid-5089@reddit
What's socially acceptable to the young people probably isn't to older people nowadays. It's unfortunate u don't like their music but nothing wrong with playing music at the beach. Could try talking to them and ask to turn it down a bit but they are just trying to enjoy themselves as long as they aren't causing bother, sometimes u just have to put up with it.

Mattazo@reddit
Depends how loud? Blasting it then definitely not, loud enough so a small group can listen and someone close by hears background noise then fairs.
The beach should be big enough for everyone to enjoy respectfully.
thierry_ennui_@reddit
There is an inverse correlation here - the more likely somebody is to play their music at volume in public, the more atrocious their music taste is.
MKAndroidGamer@reddit
Apparently I'm in the minority as someone who quite enjoys there being music at the beach.
damapplespider@reddit
Depends how loud and obnoxious the music is. I sometimes take my headphones but that makes me miss the sound of the waves. If the beach is big enough, I’ve moved away a bit.
I do sympathise. There’s a drummer who busks on the seafront near me with an amplifier to make those tinny beats go further. He’s there most sunny days near the lovely cafe with outdoor seating. But it’s now unpleasant to sit there for lunch with the racket going on. So if you’re a grumpy old woman, I’ll join your club.
3speechnotallowed@reddit

Geezer-McGeezer@reddit

Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
Its Just narcissistic.. Youre not a dj. Noone cares about your musical tastes. Earphones are great. We need to respect other people more in this country instead of blasting out music people think says something about them. It's pathetic.
AnnieMoe75@reddit
It's a public space, I find screaming unhappy children at the beach much harder to tolerate than music. I would recommend ear plugs, then it won't bother you.
Unable_Anywhere2983@reddit
So if I’m at a beach that is large, I will play music on my speaker but not loud at all, it’s just loud enough so I can hear it comfortably.
I can’t listen with earphones or headphones so a speaker is my only option. I could listen to music through my phone however when I’m at a beach or somewhere that is quite noisy I feel like I’m straining my ears to listen.
I will listen to music and ask the people around me, “is this ok?” Those who don’t like it either won’t sit around me, (because the beach is big enough and my music isn’t loud enough for them to be able to move about to areas where they can’t hear it)
I also don’t listen to it for long, 20mins max.
Eclipse453@reddit
I was at Bournemouth air festival one yeah and this group was playing their music on the beach out loud. I found it irritating especially as I was trying to listen to the commentary.
Personally I think it's selfish because people go to the beach to relax but each to their own.

Kim_catiko@reddit
We went to West Wittering last year and it was nice a peaceful for about three hours until this big group arrived and started blasting loud music. To be fair, after people complained, they had to turn it right the way down. Then another group showed up and did the same thing, again they were told to turn it down or leave.
This incessant urge for certain people to impose their music tastes on others genuinely baffles me.
Nooms88@reddit
I think it depends on the beach, one of the super busy spots around Bournemouth with hundreds people, kids, lots of noise, yea no issue.

davus_maximus@reddit

thermalcat@reddit
Noise pollution is still noise pollution even at the beach.
sparklybeast@reddit
Entirely depends on volume, for me. I've no objections to a group listening to music through a speaker if it can't clearly be heard from 20m away. There will likely be kids playing and being louder than that. But properly blasting music is the preserve of arseholes.
Mr_Emile_heskey@reddit

HighNimpact@reddit

TH1CCARUS@reddit
It isn’t a black and white answer, surely?
I’ve used a speaker at the beach - and park, riverside, etc. - countless times. Usually it’s loud enough for my group and no one else, though.
PigletAlert@reddit
I lean towards it being socially unacceptable to play loud music through a speaker in any public environment where others could be disturbed except for organised events.
BLightyear67@reddit
No. Its not socially acceptable. Thats why headphones were invented.
sparklybeast@reddit
Tend not to work so well in a group.
BigGrinJesus@reddit
Depends how crowded the beach is and how loud the music is. If the beach is rammed and they're pumping loud music, then it's rude. If everyone is spread out and you can hear it lightly in the distance, then that's just part of being in public.
Teenagers have more hormones than common sense though and playing loud music is instinctive behaviour designed to draw attention in an effort to find a mate, whether they admit it or not.
There always has been and always will be loud teenagers. It's part of living in society. Find a quieter, less well known beach. Life is unfair sometimes.

On nice beach days, the majority of folk would just be there being their usual selfish selves so those are the days, I take it on the chin or I set off for a harder to reach or lesser known piece of coastline.
