Icons we don't talk about enough

Who is someone you consider legendary that hasn't gotten enough historical attention?
Gloria Estefan used to be a huge icon back in the late 80s-early 90s, and nowadays we just never hear about her or her impact on pop music. I'm surprised she hasn't had a renaissance.
MrNinoBrown1906@reddit
Afrika Bambaataa died today and is legendary in hip hop. No mention of honor yet on this sub
Particular_Special70@reddit
Fun story. I was just in Miami last weekend and we took a "Millionaire's boat tour." We passed Gloria and Emilio Estefan's houses. I say houses because they're on the same property, but they have separate dwellings, which is my actual dream situation.
Scherzkeks@reddit
As some who has cats who met someone with a cat that fights with my cats—can’t tell you how much I dream about this
Of that the cats will one day get along for the ultimate cuddle pile
Particular_Special70@reddit
No for real though. “Living apart together” truly is the only option for me to be a relationship moving forward! I value my own space and energy way too much to share. (Pending disastrous economy of course. Ugh)
drtyhppi@reddit
House divorce 🤣
IkariYun@reddit
She made her money and went home to live a quiet and happy life
ThinkFree@reddit
That would be Enya. Bought a castle and lives with her cats.
IkariYun@reddit
Living my dream
CloseButNoChicory@reddit
Your dream is to live with Enya's cats? 😋
IkariYun@reddit
Don't forget the castle
lellywest@reddit
She did not. She is still working.

I was just thinking about her recently and started a playlist of her songs, along with the Miami Sound Machine.
QueenLeo41@reddit
Gloria is that girl. I remember her being everywhere as a child. I'm still a huge fan of hers. Her "Miami305" album is the shit! I tell people all the time. Before Jlo, Before Christina, Before Shakria there was Gloria. 😘🌻❤️
Intelligent-Salt-362@reddit
Talk about her? My wife has met/hung out with her a few times at local charity events. Aside from her lasting cultural impact on pop music and Miami in general, she supports several local charities that focus on housing and support for women and children that have survived domestic violence. So, while she may not be a huge topic of conversation across the country and world, locally (here in Miami) she is still very well known and respected.
Mudcreek47@reddit
The rhythm is gonna get you.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
It did, so I called Dr. Beat.
TheVexingRose@reddit
I used to play this song for my youngest. She thought the "rhythm" was some type of monster that was coming for her, so we would say "the rhythm! It's coming! It's going to get you!" She would run and hide. Great for a quick bathroom break when she wouldn't leave me alone.
JackTrippin@reddit
It got me once in a Trader Joe's. I almost didn't make it out alive.
MaxxHeadroomm@reddit
Did you turn the beat around?
t_bone_stake@reddit
Did you get on your feet?

I’m actually going to Miami next week and now I feel like I need to listen to this song on repeat
SweatyPalmsSunday@reddit

Only if you feed it yayo.
twinkiesandcake@reddit
I hope that she's making bank from being sampled like crazy in new music.

“Either he got good news or Gloria Estefan was right…eventually the rhythm IS going to get you” -Chandler Bing

This line lives rent free in my head. Any time Gloria comes up, I hear Matthew Perry :)

Every time this song comes on I think of this moment 😂

It'll get you when you least expect it.
TryTwiceAsHard@reddit
Her Come In Out of the Dark was a huge deal. However I've done been disappointed to hear from very many people in the business that she's rude and insufferable.
lellywest@reddit
I’ve heard just as many stories that she’s lovely, soo… people always have opinions about celebrities. And people who dislike or badmouth her might just disagree with her politically or something. She’s a pretty outspoken liberal, and in a place like Florida that’ll get you labeled “insufferable” pretty quickly.
cranberries87@reddit
She’s liberal? I swear I heard she was MAGA somewhere on Reddit.
TryTwiceAsHard@reddit
Omg I'd be so disappointed if she were MAGA. I can not wrap my head around POC supporting that freak. Hell, I can't wrap my head around white people supporting him.
RoyalDuderina@reddit
She is decidedly not MAGA. A lot of the older Cuban community turned on her when they realized that.
cranberries87@reddit
Sounds like I got some bad information. 🫣Can’t believe everything you read on Reddit or the internet, that’s for sure!
TeddyGrahamNap@reddit (OP)
She's very close with her daughter who is a soft bitch lesbian, and she sounds exactly like Gloria!
lellywest@reddit
lol
TryTwiceAsHard@reddit
I live and work in Hollywood so I have insider info, not just how she treats fans when she's "on". You might too, not saying otherwise. But yeah, she's really not well liked in the industry. However that said, she's been through a lot and some people just do not appreciate a strong woman.
swatson7856@reddit
As someone who lived through WSVN-7's 24-hour news coverage of her 1990 bus crash, I've heard enough talking about Gloria Estefan.
Putrid_Appearance509@reddit
I kept waiting for Bad Bunny to bring her out at the Superbowl. No one was complaining about her singing in Spanish on the 90s, we were, in fact, loving it. Long live the queen!
mstrdsastr@reddit
I understand what you're saying, but she's from Cuba. And old.
funhaver_whee@reddit
And she’s got shitty politics
larryb78@reddit
Had it been in Miami that would’ve been a lock
Not_So_Bad_Andy@reddit
Random memory: Was living in Miami when Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 (holy shit the bullying in school afterwards thanks to my name). She did a song called "Always Tomorrow" about it and to raise money. Even today that song gets me.
abbydabbydo@reddit
I didn’t really understand the Puerto Rican entertainment on the west coast. From SF, and while I’m sure they’re there, it doesn’t bleed into the culture at all. Can’t think of a single PR restaurant, very unlike back east.
Not a problem with it, just think it would have been sooooo much better for a FLA or NY superbowl. I guess I’ve never really paid attention, don’t suppose they ever really give nod to location on halftime entertainment.
Regardless, would’ve been dope if she’d dropped on.
drtyhppi@reddit
I had a similar thought a few years ago when the SB was in San Francisco. Missed opportunity for Journey to play the halftime show.
abbydabbydo@reddit
I mean, Steve Perry plays every Giants game 😉😂
Illystylez619@reddit
Its because we are further south.
abbydabbydo@reddit
I believe that. I only really know SF/Oakland
PSBJtotallyboss@reddit
There is an amazing Puerto Rican restaurant in San Rafael called Sol Food. HIGHLY recommend.
DeadSeaGulls@reddit
very few locals are at any given superbowl. It's a show intended for a national, and greater, audience.
CherryCherry5@reddit
I can genuinely name only one song by her, so, 🤷♀️
Bradtothebone79@reddit
Get on your feet

I have always loved her music.
PlantedinCA@reddit
Her and Sheila E did a song recently.

I'm so utterly charmed by Sheila E, she always seems like a good time.
PlantedinCA@reddit
One of the times I saw Prince in concert she was a surprise guest. ❤️
I saw her in concert once and in the middle of the show her brother came on the stage and they had a drum competition. It was so cute to see the lighthearted sibling spat. 😂
Chemical_Butterfly40@reddit
was that at the Forum? I went to 3 of those shows including the one with Sheila E
PlantedinCA@reddit
In San Jose! Sounds like all the west coasts stops got a nice guest. :)
youmeanlike24@reddit
She did a Tiny Desk concert last year, so good!

Miami Sound Machine!
DragonSmaug13@reddit
I used to love her song “The words get in the way” The music and the lyrics are beautiful. I appreciate the lyrics now as I understand them. But I liked the tune as a kid
DragonSmaug13@reddit
From Gloria Estefan, I encourage u all to give it a listen
Not_So_Bad_Andy@reddit
In 1992 I was living in the southern part of (now called) Miami-Dade County, Florida. Was in the worst part of Hurricane Andrew. Lots of fun stuff. Roof was missing, screened in patio was somehow thrown into the front yard. My room got it the worst. And I still knew we had it better than a lot of people.
She wrote and performed a song called "Always Tomorrow" to raise money. I will always love her, and I'll always love that song.
cranberries87@reddit
I agree with the poster who said Sade. A voice like absolute velvet!
WillBsGirl@reddit
I Live For Loving You was always my jam.
SadPhase2589@reddit
My dentist office played her on a constant loop when I was a kid. Now I can’t hear her without thinking about my teeth being drilled on.
beccadahhhling@reddit
Well, I mean, she DID just win a Grammy this last February. She never really went away. She’s released 2 albums in the last 4 years and was a part of the 80 for Brady soundtrack and music video.
I know she’s re-recording her music right now ala Taylor Swift and will probably have something new in the next few years.
--Quartz--@reddit
I thought of like computer/software icons, and for some reason I was interested and clicked.
Now I'm dissapointed in a weird way, and left wondering what was I expecting to see in the first place.

She has her own Broadway jukebox musical.
My dad was absolutely obsessed with her and somehow dated her doppelganger.
Separate-Sky-1451@reddit
How is she approaching 70???
This getting old thing is stupid.

I'm an old man.
islipped83@reddit
Gabby's Dollhouse? I was DELIGHTED to see her in it, and she plays a great character!
Aronacus@reddit
Yep, watching it with my children. My wife, and I were like "Is that Gloria Estefan?!?" Then, it hit us.
We old A.F. Then it dawned on me I have video games older than most redditors.
"See this gold cartridge, It's older than you!"

Lolanr1@reddit
God, I was so obsessed with her as a kid I always made my mother braid my hair at night so I would have curls like Gloria in the morning. 'Twas unsuccessful.
HobKnobblin@reddit
My mom had one of her albums when I was growing up. 30+ years later and I can still sing along when a rare Gloria Estefan song appears in the wild
Fantastic_Honey_7425@reddit
So, I had two young kids and one of them wanted to go see Gabby’s Dollhouse for his birthday last year. The move was terrible enough already, but then Gloria Estefan shows up and doesn’t even fucking sing.
eaglewatch1945@reddit
She almost died in my neck of the woods.
Rodeoqueenyyc@reddit
My best friend’s 7 & 4 year old daughters are obsessed with “Conga.” I love Shakira and learned that Gloria was the lyricist for “Whenever, Wherever” the first big English language hit. Very cool that she helped other artists break into USA
Dude_man79@reddit
Both Gloria and Paula Abdul were my jam back in the day. So many good hits and videos from that time period.
Puzzleheaded-Sky3141@reddit
I try to say i love her, but...the words get in the way
GoonieMcflyguy@reddit
She was like 80s bad bunny, but with more English. She had bangers and such an inspiring journey. I also find her way more attractive in my adulthood than I did as a kid.
jackie879@reddit
Paging Dr. Beat, Emergency!
Love Gloria and the Miami Sound Machine. I saw her in concert in 1996. It remains one of my top 5 concerts ever. She’s amazing.
Asleep_Sherbet_3013@reddit
I was born and raised in Miami, FL, left for years, and then came back. Everyone still talks about here. It has never stopped. She is part of the culture.

She’s is making music to this day, still very big in the tropical music community with something like 120-125 million albums sold through out her career. Her and her husband also own part of the Dolphins and a ton of restaurants in Florida area. So she’s doing good.
