Whether or not this is necessarily true anymore a long time ago when I got my Lenovo T520 it came out of the box with the fan speed control bug. It would ramp up and down repeatedly irrespective of load. After about three months of what was truly insanity inducing, they released a new firmware that fixed the problem. Based on that experience, I can completely understand why this was an issue.

Lenovo has a very aggressive fan curve even on windows. Laptop would sit quiet for half an hour the turn into a turbo fan for a minute when you open firefox

Do ThinkPads not need this or?

They use a different driver. This probably just brings the IdeaPads and similar up to the same level of support.

I have a Slim series (Yoga by a different name) and yeah, I don't think I've had a single utility work with the fans. Luckily BIOS manages it fine.

Joke's on you all, my Lenovo laptop doesn't have any fans. The N6000 in it doesn't get hot enough

I'm curious how well this will work. I use LenovoLegionLinux for fan speed and toggling rapid charge (not really for much else to be honest).
Even on Windows with official tools, fan control has many issues. Of course my not-fully-up-to-date BIOS may not be helping.

just update it, take 2mins

Lenovo got rid of the advanced BIOS menu about a year ago. I stopped updating so I can keep it for now

Honestly, I was pretty surprised at the difference in Linux support between Thinkpads and other Lenovo laptops.
My IdeaPad Slim 3 still retains a bug across all modern kernels where the keyboard straight up dies after waking from sleep, not even responding to reisub - also not present in Windows at all.
That being said, progress is always great! Love to see it.
