Calling all Gen X gamers

We all know and love Oregon Trail from back in the day...but...how many remember Atlantis? This text-based resource management game was so frustrating. Three possible solutions and the usual outcome was to fail at saving the island. If you did succeed, though? Oh, you rode that high for weeks!

Never played that. I remember Oh Deer! It was a text based deer population manager.
Geezerker@reddit
I don’t remember that one, but I do remember Zork and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! I loved those text-based games

Watch out for lurking grues, and mazes of twisty little passages, all alike.
McGruffin@reddit
I loved those Infocom text adventures too! My favorite was Cutthroats.

HHG2G Text based game was the wasps nipples.

that goddamn Babel fish puzzle

I'd hidden that nugget in the depths of my psyche... Now I have to find a playthrough clip of someone doing it successfully to get on with my day.

Anyone play Larn? I had it on the Amiga.

Oh man I loved those games. Sierra's Kings quest and the other "quest" games. TSR (now wizards of the coast) games. Zork was great. I then stumbled upon the world of online text RPGs (muds) and the rest is history. I'm 50 years old and still game on my PC for an unhealthy amount of time each day, would play more but 3 youngish kids and a stupid full time job get in the way sometimes!

I only play umoria

I used to play STARFLIGHT for hours. Felt massive - the entire game was on 2 5.25 floppies.

I played the Oregon Trail in elementary school but when I got my C64 in \~1985, my first games were the D&D Games like Pools of Radiance and other RPG games like Bards Tale and Ultima 3+. You want a game similar to OT, do you remember Mule?
How about Atari 2600 games, I made some retro videos on them already:

I played most of the Sierra games, like Police Quest, Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.

Leisure Suit Larry was a hoot! I loved the way they had the drink in the bar giving only the last line of dirty limericks.

I have all these games on Steam now. Gotta love that nostalgia

I have no recollection of that one. And we were early Atari 400 adopters and played all the Infocom games. My google fu seems to show a couple of different options. Are you talking about Voyage to Atlantis, which first came out in 78 on the TRS-80? Looks similar to Colossal Cave Adventure, which was my first text game. Unless Hunt the Wumpus counts.
HavBoWilTrvl@reddit (OP)
Nope. This was the 1980 wholly text based game. I was lucky enough to have my homeroom period in one of the classrooms used for the brand new computers used to teach DOS programming (mostly consisting of if/then statements). We would play Oregon Trail and Atlantis during homeroom.

Various Carmen Sandiego games.

I don’t remember that one. I still play Oregon Trail though but it’s on the Nintendo Switch.
Diela1968@reddit
It’s also on Steam, and an updated version with better graphics.
There’s also a lovely game called “Organ Trail” that has you crossing the US in a station wagon fighting zombies. Highly recommended.
LadyNorbert@reddit
I don't think I ever saw the one you're describing, but it sounds fun! OT is the only text adventure game I can remember playing as a child.

King’s Quest

I played the remake that came out a few years ago. It was very cute and a decent game on its own merits, but not nearly as epic as the original series.
Koolmidx@reddit
In middle school I played oregon trail, in highschool we had 16 color windows and macs and I programmed a frog to draw a 5 pointed star. Lately I'm playing random games on PC, including Helldivers 2 and Abiotic Factor.
My son asked me if I thought Oregon Trail was the first survival game. I said in spirit but not in reality as it's missing mechanics that define the genre. I enjoy the random questions he asks about the stone ages.

I dont remember that; I had to google it lol
anyone remember the game Drug Wars? lol that was fun
