[Throttle House] Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer DLS Review

Another multimillion dollar restomod Porsche? Singer seems to have done it again. I don't know how the market can possibly bear so many of these things existing. I'll still take the 911K with my imaginary stack of millions, but I guess a DLS wouldn't be a bad backup plan...
MagillaGorillasHat@reddit
They said they couldn't find a flaw, but I saw something immediately: the fender flares. They have a gap and look like they're glued on.
Widebody bolt ons make sense on production cars. It's not worth the cost/effort of having all new panels made for a single trim spec.
The Singer is a $3 million+ car. Every panel is bespoke anyway, why not make it continuous?
theb3arjevv@reddit
I think the intention was to keep original lines and style of the vehicle while still following all the laws and regulations that say that the entire tire needs to be covered.
It's tough on restomods because it was literally impossible to make a tire as wide as a modern tire when the car was originally produced. It's probably the single biggest challenge of these companies to figure out how to get a modern high performance tire on there without corrupting the design too much.
I don't love the bolt on look here but I also think it would have looked a little wonky with seamlessly overstretched fenders. I think they just had to pick a lesser evil.
gimpwiz@reddit
Fun fact, one of the wheels the original GT40 ran was 15x15. 15" tall, 15" wide. If you have a 305 section width tire you're probably mounting it on something around 11-12" wide, so what are you mounting on a 15" wide wheel?
But yeah, those didn't exactly ship on the usual street car and neither did 12" wide wheels. But. Impossible isn't necessarily the word.
humjaba@reddit
The countache was also out by this point with its ridiculous 345/35r15 tires
gimpwiz@reddit
Great mention! I forgot how wide those tires were.
SerialExperimentLean@reddit
That's the one thing I don't like about the DLS and the Turbo (and quite a few of these restomods), they look like modified cars. I much prefer a restomod that looks as original, or at least period as possible
zxrax@reddit (OP)
To each their own -- I'm a fan of the flares. I don't see a gap, I just see where the two separate panels come together and the shadow between them. Maybe I'm not looking at the same place you are. But I'm not sure that sharp of a curve to jut out where it does would look right with a single continuous panel, and aside from the flares over the wheels the rest of the body maintains the original silhouette which I think is important for this car's ethos.
bscrew@reddit
I agree. The flares could have been smoothed into the fenders, but it's not what they were going for.
VastStranger1164@reddit
They were cool in the beginning but now they keep making new ones and asking higher and higher prices to see how much they can get away with.
The 964 market is insane probably due them buying any and all they can find.
ScipioAfricanvs@reddit
Don't the buyers need to supply their own donor car?
doubleyuno@reddit
If theyre putting a DLS on throttle house, what in the world are they saving for TGT?
Jamesthrottlehouse@reddit
Taking an m240i, a Honda beat and an ND2 on a road trip across the globe. But you didn’t hear it from me
ithrowtools@reddit
This guy's gonna shit his pants if it actually happens now.
trail-g62Bim@reddit
Check the username.
(Can't tell if you whooshed or if I did)
ithrowtools@reddit
I think you did here.
Reconvened@reddit
I am very confused.
ithrowtools@reddit
The cars in the user flair of the guy James replied to are the ones he referenced.
doubleyuno@reddit
You'd definitely have me asking questions....
rugbyj@reddit
So:
Sounds about right!
willpc14@reddit
It's the M240i that makes this unbelievable
T-Baaller@reddit
I see Thomas stole your password this morning
OK_GrapeVine@reddit
Are these cars also modified to match current 911 safety levels in case of high speed crashes etc?
agray20938@reddit
Mate it doesn't even have an airbag in the steering wheel...
gimpwiz@reddit
No, if it crashes, you die like a real man.
zxrax@reddit (OP)
🤣
Ok-Condition32@reddit
Im a big fan of Singer.! But sometimes i wonder ‘with a zillion restomod companies, is it rare to keep the car stock or to have it restomod?’
megacookie@reddit
A car this special should come with its own Singer-branded little tub of butter for when your finger gets stuck in the shifter hole. A glaring omission in a $3 million car.
zxrax@reddit (OP)
Finally, someone finds the flaw they were looking for.
nipcarlover@reddit
That intro reminded me of this Matt Farah video from back in the /DRIVE days

Mdbutnomd@reddit
They’ve been known to take influence from other’s work, I.e., copy other people. They did it to savagegeese as well.
gimpwiz@reddit
Good thing all those youtuber guys are known for only doing the most original bits with no content like anyone else has ever done. That's what they pay writers millions for, after all.
pridetwo@reddit
Oh no! Did they make a super awkward looking AI generated clip for a mediocre joke?
LlamasNeverLie@reddit
lol what did they “do” to Savagegeese? I’ve never fallen asleep to a throttlehouse video so they can’t have ripped off anything core to the savagegeese filmmaking thesis.
zxrax@reddit (OP)
that's brutal 😬
Jamesthrottlehouse@reddit
This is awesome, somehow had missed this. Now I'm sad Matt doesn't do skits anymore
strongmanass@reddit
I don't buy the narrative about the beauty of analog gears because they're all cheap injection-molded plastic crap. But if they all looked like this it would be a different story. That's jewelry.
costafilh0@reddit
3 million... What a joke.
They were already a joke at 1 million.
Just buy a cheap 911 and restomod it yourself, you can get 90% of the experience for 10% of the cost.
At 3 million, I just don't see my self justifying the purchase, not even with billions in the bank.
At that point I would want something custom and exclusive and 1 of, and go crazy with it.
alastoris@reddit
At 1B, 3 millions dollar is like $3 if you had $1000.
If I had $1000 and can get that for $3, I wouldn't even blink at the price and just get it because I can.
Helsang@reddit
That's exactly because you're not a billionaire and you can't fathom $3 million as throw-away money. I don't mean this to be harsh, but the people who are buying cars like this don't have the same problems as you or I.
When you have that kind of money, you probably don't care too much about it and you care more about getting that "last 10%."
And I think that you're vastly underestimating the research & development that Singer has put into a car like this. I don't think you'd be able to build a same-or-better-quality car for anywhere near the price they're offering.
Bonerchill@reddit
You could build a car as fast, as grippy, with equal ride quality, that would equal or exceed this car’s lap time at any given track anywhere in the world for $3 million.
Easily.
But you, yourself, would have hundreds of hours in it chasing shops and doing quality sign-offs. Those hundreds of hours are worth millions of your time.
The49GiantWarriors@reddit
If you had "just" one billion dollars in the bank you would get just about 4% in annual interest (in reality, the money wouldn't in a savings or checking account, but let's go with it). 4% of $1 billion $40 million. If you divide that by 12 months, that's $3.3 million per month.
I don't know how much you earn each month, but whatever that number is, that would be the functional equivalent cost of a $3.3 million car for someone with $1 billion in the "bank".
orakle44@reddit
I don't think you properly understand what goes into making a Singer. You literally couldn't make a car of that quality for 1 million, so no is not a joke at the price point it's at. They aren't for everybody, and they are custom and exclusive, each one is tailored to it's buyer.
cpxchewy@reddit
They are very different. I drove a coworker’s Singer and it felt like a neo modern interpretation of a GT3 more than an older Porsche.
In my mind the closest car to this would be a 90s Carrera RS but sadly I’ve never been able to drive one.
DestroyerOfTacos@reddit
being a passenger in both as a caveat, 993 rs is the closest match to a singer out of any porsche I've found, biggest difference is the interior in a singer is insaaane, one I was in was a green over dark tan and I was in love.
StrangeSmellz@reddit
The flaw is it's not a 3m drive. For that kind of money you can have a load of really interesting cars that are objectivly better.
Lemantech@reddit
Curious to think whats a better car
StrangeSmellz@reddit
GT2, GT3 RS, Arial atom etc. And you'll have tons of money left over.
Lemantech@reddit
But those are defo not objectively better. I agree 3m is crazy but it sounds that it’s pretty much impossible to get a better driving street car than this.
zxrax@reddit (OP)
faster or more capable != better experience
and after a couple hundred thousand, or maybe a million tops, experience is subjective. there is no "objectively better" at this price point. it's almost purely subjective, dependent on personal taste and desires. would you rather have a Singer, or a Czinger? how about a Bugatti Tourbillon or a Rimac Nevara? they're all such incredibly different experiences. I'd challenge anyone to unequivocally convince a large audience that any of these four cars is objectively better than the rest -- I don't think it's possible.
lostfate2005@reddit
Guess what, the owners can just go buy whatever it is you think “is a better drive”
saazbaru@reddit
Man I think Singer is really super sad. I wish people would keep 964s as they are, it’s my dream generation of 911. hate to see them all get hacked up.
If you polish out every flaw out of the 911 experience, it’s not a 911 anymore.
thisisjustascreename@reddit
There aren’t “so many”, the combined production capacity of every restomod company is like 250 cars a year.
macgirthy@reddit
They couldnt find a flaw, i found one. I dont care about being purist. If this sets me back 3 mil, i want a v10 or v12 in there. Singing its butt off. Doesnt even need to be too insanely powerful, just a high revving motor like whats in the GMA T.50.
Gimme something really bespoke. Not 6 cylinders, i have two of those already. Something really unobtainable, I mean its already 3 million. Lets take it another level.
73629265@reddit
You have to stop thinking like a poor person. It's not one or the other. It's everything. They can buy anything they want.
macgirthy@reddit
A poor person would settle for something they offer, a rich person, i mean really rich would strive for something a lot more bespoke. Think Sultan of Brunei Ferrari.
JoeDwarf@reddit
And if you’re a rich person who really loves 911s, you probably want a flat 6 in there. It will go in the garage with your other 6 dozen cars.
People bitching about the price don’t get rich people. Jay Leno has a massive garage and he’s not particularly rich. Guys who buy these cars aren’t thinking about what they can get for the spare 3 million they have. They just buy what they want.
lostfate2005@reddit
No, they would just buy both
73629265@reddit
That's a great example. You want to bet he had a plethora of mundane expensive shit to go along with the one-offs?
caterham09@reddit
I feel like the problem with all of these restomod cars is always the price. They go over it in the video, but like you can get otherworldly driving experiences for so much less money.
I know it doesn't matter to the customer base who buys these cars, but it still should be brought up. I mean is this really 10x the car of a Gt3?
lostfate2005@reddit
Money doesn’t matter at this point, the owner can just go buy a gt3 if they feel like it
FENICH@reddit
It’s how you look at it.
If you care only about the driving experience then it is definitely not 10x better than the GT3.
If you look at it as a overengineered piece of art which is customized perfectly to what you want I think the price point is somewhat justifiable. Knowing every panel, every stitch, every part is perfect and handmade.
sharktoucher@reddit
Theres also the fact that you need a classic porsche body to work on, and i cant imagine those are getting any cheaper
ElGatoLoco13@reddit
Im a big fan of them and if I had the money I’d try to get on the list.
ineyeseekay@reddit
Same. The world can't have enough Singers... And here's to hoping the market gets flooded and the price comes down (lolololololol)
ithrowtools@reddit
Man, That's a lot of coin. I get it. But at that price. Is it really worth it even if it is THAT good? Like James said "Like an LFA with a manual" I'm willing to bet for that price or significantly less you can buy an actual LFA and have a manual gearbox engineered to work with it.
sharktoucher@reddit
I dont know anyone buying an LFA now would risk doing anything that would risk affecting the noise it makes
ithrowtools@reddit
I think experiencing that engine with full control would be a benefit without sacrificing the noise it makes.
Bonerchill@reddit
The answer is always, “if you can afford to spend millions on a car, its goodness isn’t really as important as its perceived goodness.”
daxelkurtz@reddit
I look forward to experiencing the DLS as DLC.
Bonerchill@reddit
The DLS came out in, what, 2018ish? I think I saw it at Rennsport that year.
Bit late to the party, no?
Nonameswhere@reddit
They are insane, indulgent, ridiculous, stupid, yet if I had the money I would get one over any brand new car period.
