TIFU: Trashed my rims with my flat tire

Context: My parents and I know very little about cars and I barely drive myself as is at 18.
Recently my mother blew her tire on our 2020 Toyota Corrola on the road and absolutely shredded it. After watching a couple of youtube videos we managed to switch it with our spare and this random guy, who had offered to help us, said he would trash the old wheel for us at a dumpster outback. Me and my parents, knowing nothing about wheels, said yes and they guy went off down the street. After driving on a spare we went to the Toyota office near us and until they asked us for the rim, it didn't click. The guy there said it would cost us $1000+ for new wheels, and atp we can't afford that for now. Is there any place cheaper where we could buy new wheels?

The guy probably simply stole your wheel, but if he really put it in the dumpster, it’s probably still there depending on how recent this was.
$1k for a single new OEM wheel is insane; the wheels on a Corolla aren’t more than ~$250 a pop (tire not included). Call some independent tire shops.
Also, since nobody else has said it, in the politest way I know how... You and your family could do a little more to anticipate the logical next step. Even (or especially) in areas you “know very little about.”

It depends on the car. I recently had to replace a Subaru wheel (co-produced by Toyota). The tire along was a special order that took 3 weeks and was $500. The rim would have been another $500.

Of course it depends on the car. My Bimmer has $1000 wheels. A 2020 Corolla does not. I did google this before commenting.
If you paid $500 for a tire on a BRZ, you were absolutely had, sorry bro. I could see the wheel itself being $500 and special order for OEM. You don’t have rims.

A friend commented that a new BRZ has very pricey tires. As I was changing one tire, it had to match. It was a special order from distributor. Shipped from BC. A pain in the ass to get. If I was just replacing all the tires it would have been much easier to go find some affordable racing tires.
Hey, OP's car could have been a GR Corolla. Also, not going to be cheap, and rare, due to low dealer allocations.

"Stole" isn't the right word since the OP gave it to him.

Who knows, it's entirely possible that the rim was chewed up by the time they brought it to a stop.

Go to any other shop they will set you up with one new wheel(and TPMS sensor) for half of that or less.
Toyota dealer trying to give you the shaft. Selling you 4 wheels when you only need one.
Prosthetic_Head@reddit
If your vehicle is out of the warranty period, do not take it to the dealership for anything anymore. Find a good, trusted independent shop
MahomesGoat@reddit
The dealership is trying to fuck you because they can tell you don’t know better
Novogobo@reddit
Once you tell them one stupid thing they just go into screwyouover mode.
Novogobo@reddit
That guy stole the wheel btw

Facebook marketplace or the junkyard is probably the best bet.

Not sure what the plan was giving your wheel to some guy? Spares aren't meant to be driven on long term unless you drive a Nissan. Does the dealer know you only need 1 wheel and tire? That shouldn't cost $1000 for a Corolla. Worst case scenario you can get a set of 4 cheap wheels and tires from Discount Tire for under $1000.
MysticMarbles@reddit
Eh, that's inline with dealer alloy pricing. Not saying there isn't crazy markup there but I was pretty used to getting $800 boring alloys at cost then adding our markup.
But yes, 100%, probably get a new wheel that may not match for $20 on marketplace, maybe $50-100 for a match if available. Junkyard, probably $10-$75 depending on area pricing (they are diameter X3 at my yard for alloys, so a 17 is $51... all steelies are $10)

Real talk. People are this stupid.

100 bucks at any junkyard

I have good luck on eBay finding single wheels
thaneliness@reddit
FB marketplace for that wheel

Six year old cars show up at wreckers constantly. You should be able to buy a used one pretty affordably.
arsinoe716@reddit
Go to a buy/sell sure and you will find your rim for sale.

What country/city?
Matching used wheels can often be found at local junkyards. Car-part.com is a junkyard aggregator if you are in the US.

You might even get the chance to buy your original rim back
