Random aches and pains, what the f**k is this noise?

Guys, are random parts of your body painful, sore, swollen, or otherwise on strike for no discernible reason? What the hell is this? I'm as old as the speed limit Sammy couldn't drive and this is a wholly unwelcome development.
Yesterday evening, my left knee basically seized up of its own accord. I did nothing to provoke this but I was Long John Silver all night. Hurt like a bitch. 600mg ibuprofen knocked it our before I went to bed. Now the pain is a no-show all day, no medicine. What is this witchcraft?

Stretch daily. Take collagen. Eat less processed foods. Eat less sugar. Fast intermittently. It’ll all go away!

I've started getting occasional arthritis flares in my middle finger on my right hand. Which is disappointing because I use that finger a lot (or would like to). Or my left shoulder will just ache for days, then...stop? I agree with some of the other posts, that reducing inflammatory foods like sugar really helps, especially with the arthritis. I freaking HATE that I now have to maintain this sack of meat. Like, I still feel like I'm in my 20s mentally - why will my body not cooperate?
And don't get me started on menopause. I legit had no idea - I haven't slept the same since January 3, 2025 when I had my last good sleep. I only remember that day because I had surgery and had twilight anesthesia and was really mad to be woken from the best nap I'd had in years.
2yearlurking_10_19@reddit
Frozen shoulder is a perimenopause symptom. Joint pain too but it is overlooked because everyone one focuses on the hot flashes.
HRT helped my joint pain so much.

I hear you. I'm also that speed limit age, and I like to joke that my warranty ran out when I hit 50. That's the year that I had a random, weird heart issue, and out of an abundance of caution, the doc sent me for tests. That led to, "well, during that test, we discovered THIS, so we'll test that too - oh, and since you're 50 now, we're going to test this, that and this other thing, and base don THOSE results, now you need THESE tests..."
It was a lot, and I felt like I spent more time in hospitals and doctor's offices that year than I ever have in my entire life.
Every other week or so, some body part decides it's gone on strike and left a note saying it won't be working for the foreseeable future - only to start working just fine a day or so later. It just seems to be the new normal.

OP, you sound like me 6 months ago. I gave up extra sugars and in 2-3 weeks my morning aches and pains went away. It was amazing, try it
By "extra" I mean I stopped eating things like cookies, ice cream, cake, etc. Cut back on any bread not made with real sourdough or unaltered wheat (which is basically ALL bread). No sodas/fruit juices/coffee creamers.
You WILL feel a difference in 2 weeks.

I’ve been spending entirely too much money trying to figure out why my body hurts all the time. Doctor visits. Physical therapy. Radiology. I have bad hips. Bad tailbone. Bad back. Every minute of every day. It’s barely April and I’m over $2000 into this out of pocket just this year.
I’m afraid it’s probably permanent. And that scares me. I’m not old yet!!!!
kten1974@reddit
Same boat! Only 52 and since I hit full menopause my knees, hips, and lower back are insanely deteriorating and in daily pain. Wth! Feels like this all came in literally overnight!!
kermitsfrogbog@reddit
Menopause hit like a freight train, didn't it. At least my emotions are in check. For now.
kten1974@reddit
Slowly getting my rage in check! 😳

In my late 30’s I was 50 pounds overweight and had trouble even tying my shoes. At one point I sprained something just trying to scratch my back. I was also taking Nexium every day to avoid hideous heartburn. My 40’s were a period of divesting myself of every bad habit. I radically changed my diet to stop eating processed foods. I quit drinking. I switched from smoking to snus. I am 56 now. I weigh about the same as I did when I was 21. Once I lost the excess weight I no longer needed Nexium (it was quite the adventure getting off of it, you have to taper your dosage rather than quitting cold turkey). I run 4 to 5 miles a day six days a week. And I feel better now than I did at 35. I don’t have the endurance and quick recovery that I did when I was younger. But I feel wonderful in my body and have no daily aches and pains. There are no drugs or supplements that can replicate simply living a healthy lifestyle.
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
Agree 100%. Nothing replaces a healthy diet, weight and regular activity. I turn 50 next year and still feel as good as I did in my 20s. Here’s to many more active decades to come!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Just about over, for now. I believe I tore or stretched a tendon in my left shoulder. Its been about 9 months now but I am just about back to normal without any pain. Only after bench press can I feel it a bit. Otherwise just the pain of having to go to work every day for a few more years.
OkJob8464@reddit
Short answer: yes everything hurts all the time. I am 56, in great shape, super active and always in pain. Good times.
Azerafael@reddit
58 and was a very sporty active person in my youth. Try and imagine what its like when all those old injuries decide to come home and spend the rest of the twilight years with you.
Almost every day i hurt in either one or both rotators, lower back, right knee, right elbow and both ankles.
I don't just need bionics, i need a full body transplant hahaha.

Consume medicinal quantities of cannabis. Ibuprofen is bad for you.

50 is still young! My mum climbed Mt Kinabalu at 55 and I’m conditioning for Kilimanjaro next year for my 50th. I did the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu a couple of years ago.
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
77 model here. No aches and pains. Resting pigeon pose for the win.
MasterBeanCounter@reddit
is it raining today?
Lolly_of_2@reddit
Is it GOING to rain? Storm? Temperature change? Anytime in the next week? Yes- my fibro will let me know. Or my migraines.

I’m 58 and learning I have hip joints.
I never really appreciated the location and function of my hips until I did.
stueynz@reddit
I got a diagnosis: Rheumatoid arthritis. My fucking immune system is going at my joints FFS!!!!
Pass the methotrexate.
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
that's a bastard. good to know you're treating it, though I know methotrexate's no joke
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
I can be walking, and out of nowhere something inside one of my ankles goes zang!!! for no discernible reason, of course. i'm otherwise a mixture of "pretty robust" and various localized "oh, that's been like that for years"es, so this new one is disconcerting as hell. the reverb from it lasts for a couple of steps and then it goes away.
till next time.

My spine has been partially fused since I was 13, when I was 12 and wearing a plastic back brace for my scoliosis one of my cousins tripped me at one of the local malls when they were visiting us to see a movie and my kneecap caught on every Spanish tile for about ten feet, which completely wrecked my left knee. When I was 17, I got hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street in the crosswalk to see the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and it broke my left clavicle in two, broke my nose and I was covered head to toe with road rash and a broken front tooth. Since my lower spine was never fused, my hips are now askew and walking or standing for too long leaves me in excruciating pain the rest of the day. But I’m still here.
Wacko_Banana_Pants@reddit
You wouldn't believe the noise my butt hole makes now
LadyNorbert@reddit
Caveat: I am not normal. I was hit by a car as a child and have had steel rods fused to my spine since I was eleven years old. So I've been in constant pain for almost forty years, although it's usually at a low enough level that I can mostly ignore it. That said, I'm finding that as I get older, the pain is more pronounced and getting harder to not pay attention to it. (The worst part is that because of my prescriptions for other conditions, the only painkiller I can take is Tylenol, which for me is roughly as effective against the pain as taking Flintstones vitamins.) So yeah, bottom line is that our bodies are wearing out as we age, and it sucks.
Waffuru@reddit
I woke up the other day to a burning hot pain just above my knee. It hurt so bad I called out of work and sat in bed all day with an ice pack. The whole area was warm to the touch for the rest of the day. Next day, just gone. I figure maybe I charlie horsed it or something in my sleep, but it was in such a weird spot, I've never felt anything like it in that area. Still keeping an eye on it but it's been fine since x.x
rckblykitn14@reddit
Last Thursday the joint in my right thumb (where it attaches to the hand) hurt so bad I thought I might have broken it. Hadn't done anything to it but I could barely move it. The only reason I didn't go to the ER or urgent care (which is something I haven't done in probably almost 2 decades) was because it wasn't swollen at all. Just hurt like a MF. Took some advil and dealt with it. Was totally gone the next day.
I love being old.
RaccoonHaunting9638@reddit
The only joints that hurt are from past injury. Like bad injuries, I got in at least 5 car accidents, they all fucked my neck. And I fell off a wall and tore my ACL, that will randomly act up.
My1point5cents@reddit
Im56. My wife made me start putting a scoop of collagen in a daily smoothie and a lot of that stuff went away.
RaccoonHaunting9638@reddit
Yes!! And a good Omega 3, not the cheap shit
OddSignificance9742@reddit
I have the occasional aches and pains but I give them a day or five and they usually go away.
Chad_Hooper@reddit
I learned a few years ago that it’s safe to take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together (from my endodontist). I find that I am making use of this knowledge more every year.
I’m also glad I live in a recreational cannabis state. I don’t have to do paperwork or see my doctor like I would to qualify for medical marijuana, but it still helps with the aches in conjunction with one or both of the above.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
Yes, yes, yes but no. I know exactly what the problem is. I drew the short straw and my joints are fucked.
craftygardening@reddit
Arthritis.
erilaz7@reddit
I sometimes get these random leg cramps. I just turn over in bed the wrong way and AIIIYYYEEEE!!!!!
DtchGrl@reddit
If I pivot incorrectly (which could be any different way on any given day) my knee buckles. There is no rhyme or reason and I'm never doing anything crazy. It will be fine for weeks/months. Then, out of nowhere, it gives out. Luckily I can usually shake it off, but I'm walking a bit more tenderly for a few hours.
Worldly_Possible2925@reddit
Yes. Yes. Yes and definitely yes. 👍🏻
NoSweatBetting@reddit
Just a youngster '79 model here, but seeing the signs already
Can still jump a fence faster than most but if I sleep wrong, my neck is out for a week. Bad shitter session ruins my whole day.
Pros & cons though - I'm well on my way to belly-button-length snow-white kung-fu beard. Defiantly throwing beard over the shoulder is a life goal.
"hahahaha, your style is gahhhbage"
crafty_loser@reddit
I deal with big toe pain and restless leg syndrome nightly…
OmightyOmo@reddit
I had gout in my big toe and it was awful!
OmightyOmo@reddit
Oh both my legs feel like they’re tearing off when I walk these days.
Rum_Running_Sailor@reddit
The random aches and pains come and go. A joint occasionally seizing up happens, but thank God it's temporary. I find that as long as I stay physically active that weird shit happens a lot less.
xtrobot@reddit
There's totally a reason and it's keenly discernable: i failed to take proper care of the body i didn't think was going to last this long to begin with

Welcome to the club. Somebody on this sub mentioned that the body loses collagen when you are older at about 500g per year. I'm looking into supplementing collagen and will also make sure to get plenty of vitamin C since it helps with collagen formation. Collagen is essential for healthy bones, skin and connective tissue.

It's called aging.
siliconsmiley@reddit
You are now dying a little bit more every day. Enjoy.
IntelligentGrowth349@reddit
I’m turning 60 in less than three months. For about a month or so, I’ve noticed that my jaws now unlock at times when I’m first faking a bite of something. Yes, I researched it. It’s due to an aging body.
Humbling at best, unnerving at worst.
Inner-Association448@reddit
yeah, like all the time.
PhiloLibrarian@reddit
That happens when I don’t get enough water in a day… I get creaky and achy.😣

Normal part of aging.
You can mitigate with resistance exercises. But those will make you sore too. 🤣

One morning my ankle quit with no notice. I almost fell over when I stood up. Took me 3 days to coax it back to the job.
