My car got stolen...then returned 10 minutes later? Why?

I park my 2019 Hyundai Ioniq on a street below a block of flats. I enter the house for all of 10 minutes before coming back out to notice my car is not where I parked it. I look around and can't see it at all nor hear the unlocking sound from pressing my key.
I head back into the block and start searching online on what to do. Checked TRACE as I did park on a double yellow (whoopsie) but no hit. I call 101 to make a report as it seems non-urgent but I get fed up with the waiting time. I then proceed to head back outside approximately 10 minutes after I noticed my car was gone and see headlights in the distance of a white vehicle. A Hyundai. My car?
About 200m before reaching where I was on the street, they took a right into a very short street and disembarked, engine still running. I approached the car in almost disbelief and exchanged looks with the two of them (in their 20s-30s) as they walked in the opposite direction. At this time, it wouldn't have been obvious that I was walking to the car but they may have suspected it. I had no clue what level of control they had over the car or what would stop them from stealing it again if I didn't head inside so I prioritised that instead of confronting them.
I reverse out but I can't even see them anymore. Call 999 instead now which has a much faster response time obviously, describe what happened and how they look. Police patrol arrives in what feels like 5 minutes and I explain to the officers, they proceed to look around the area.
Obviously i'm thankful that I got the car back, I don't think most people who've had their vehicles stolen were afforded the same courtesy but I just can't understand why they did this?
I had no clue who they were nor have any reason to believe they knew who I am. There was £15 in a compartment on the ceiling of the car that was still there when I returned. From my own inspection, I couldn't see anything that was taken or put into the car.
It's late for a service so I plan to get that done tomorrow as well as explaining the situation to see if they can spot anything. Also intend to get a full clean done on the inside just in case they spot something also. The only conclusion I have is a simple joyride, but is a 2019 Hyundai that's notoriously used for taxi services like Uber the best they could get? Is it really that fun to drive?
I know it's a long post but it was a really strange situation and your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Could it be a glitch with the keys with an identical car? In the old analogue days about 30 years ago I parked my Volkswagen Polo at a hotel in Perth for an interview. Finished the interview went back to the car, the key was a wee bit sticky but got back in and started to drive back to Glasgow. I realised 15 miles later that this wasn’t my car it had a slightly different interior. Turned around drove back and left the car in the car park locked it and then went into my own car and went home. The cars were an identical colour. I presume to this day the other owner was a bit confused as I parked the car in a different space from where they left it!
Vogue1A@reddit
That is hilarious.
I locked myself out of my car many years ago but I rang my brother who then worked at a salvage yard and he appeared with a tin with hundreds of keys in! Amazingly it was only about the 20th one that worked!
Vogue1A@reddit
Reminds me a bit of a story involving my sister many years ago. She had a nice Cortina that was swiped from the rail station. It was found by the Police not long after she reported it about 10 miles away with more Petrol in it!

Imagine your car is such a shit heap that someone steals it then returns it 15 minutes later. Holy shit.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
but its MY shit heap and i'm in love with it

That is a strange situation—but it’s actually not as random as it feels. What you’ve described lines up pretty closely with a few known car-theft patterns, especially with modern keyless vehicles like a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq.
Let’s break down what most likely happened and why.
🚗 What probably happened
1. Opportunistic theft (very likely)
The simplest explanation is often the right one:
So they ditched it quickly.
Why abandon it so fast?
🔑 2. Keyless relay attack (very plausible)
If your Ioniq has keyless entry/start, this is a big one.
How it works:
But here’s the catch: 👉 Once the engine is turned off, they often can’t restart it
So what might have happened:
That would explain:
🧪 3. “Testing” the car
Some thieves don’t immediately steal—they probe vehicles:
But something spooked them:
🧠 4. Why your car specifically?
It’s less about your car and more about:
Possibly:
Key signal reachable from your flat
A 2019 Ioniq isn’t a “dream target,” but it’s:
⚠️ The biggest red flag in your story
This part matters most:
That strongly suggests:
That leans heavily toward relay theft or failed theft attempt, not a joyride.
🧼 Your plan (service + clean) — good instinct, but add this:
🔍 Do these checks ASAP:
Look for:
New devices under dashboard (rare but worth checking)
Review your home setup:
Where do you keep your car keys?
🔐 Protect yourself going forward
1. Faraday pouch (very important)
2. Steering wheel lock
3. Key placement
Don’t leave keys near:
Front door
4. Check for software updates / recalls
Hyundais (and similar cars) have had known vulnerabilities in some markets.
🧠 Why they didn’t take anything
That actually supports the theory:
🎯 Bottom line
This wasn’t random, and it wasn’t really a joyride.
👉 Most likely: A failed or interrupted theft attempt—probably involving keyless entry/relay—where they realised they couldn’t keep the car and ditched it quickly.

I stopped at ‘parked on double yellows’.
You deserve what you get you prick lol.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
Lol it was meant to be a 10 minutes in-and-out type of thing so I didn't think much of it. Learned my lesson now though haha
Meta-Fox@reddit
Doesn't matter how long mate. I missed a hospital appointment I'd been on a wait list for over 12 months for because some prick parked on double yellows "just for a quick stop" (his exact words). Couldn't leave the car park where I lived.
Thanks to his time saving strategy it gave me another 8 months of pain and misery.
Justan0therthrow4way@reddit
I’m not justifying the OP’s or that pricks behaviour but why not just get a uber?
Double yellow doesn’t necessarily mean it’s blocking a drive it just means you can’t park there. Blocking a driveway is a dick move
Meta-Fox@reddit
Honestly? I just thought of it too late. I'd already called around the local taxi companies (much rather support them to be brutally honest anyway) but none of them would be able to get to me in time. By the time I'd finally remembered about Uber it was simply too late for me to bother. Lessons learned.
But yeah, it's a dick move. It's actually a very common occurence for our car park. There's signs up, there's ample parking further up the street, there's a side street that heads into an estate that's almost always clear...but no. People would rather park directly across the car park entrance than risk having to walk for 30 seconds more.
Samuraisheep@reddit
Uber isn't everywhere... Would take about half an hour for an Uber to get to me, or I imagine similar for a local service unless they happen to be free.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
In my defense, I wasn't blocking any vehicles and these specific double yellows were newly painted, reducing the amount of cars that can park infront of the block from around 7 to just 5 for some reason.
Meta-Fox@reddit
I appreciate your sentiment, I just hope that if nothing else my story gives at least someone pause for thought the next time they do something that they assume won't affect others in any serious way.
I won't lie, I still hate the wanker in my anecdote to this day, and it happened nearly 3 years ago. It caused me far more pain and grief than he would have had to go through if he'd simply legally parked in the side street a 30 second walk away.
Legalist450@reddit
How sad is your life? Guess what tho, i park on double yellows all the time, sometimes even red. I bet your raging rn.
Samuraisheep@reddit
How sad is your life you think you're so important you can park on double yellows? I've parked in plenty of car parks and not had my door scratched once... Are you sure you actually have the ability to park?
Legalist450@reddit
Idk what planet you’re living on, clearly suggesting my parking is the problem. I can assure you my parking is the least of the issue. Without touching any nerves it does seem to be the elderly. You probably have been hit but haven’t even noticed.
Samuraisheep@reddit
Ah so it's just self entitlement then gotcha.
gnarlysuga@reddit
Bet you’d fume if you got a ticket and blame the authorities for being jobs worths.
Really weird flex though.
Legalist450@reddit
Honestly? Nah not really. I simply pay the price it cost when i do get a ticket. I’m not an a hole about it. I get it. In response to the flex bit, i wasn’t trying to flex 1 bit. It just baffles me how parking on double yellows triggers a response like that? Did they really deserve it??. My car has been scratched/door hit numerous times in supermarket car parks etc but i definitely don’t wish for their car to be stolen. Oh btw, there’s your reason to why i double yellow park! Try having your hard earned car hit by the people everytime you’re forced into a parking spot!.
NerdOnTheStr33t@reddit
I suspect their software glitched out which left them stranded. When you turned up, they decided the best option was to just leave.
Hyundai Ioniqs are one of the most stolen to order cars in the UK because of the ease to which they can be stolen using "Gameboy" devices to bypass keyless entry systems.
Get on to Hyundai and ask them to upgrade your security system because your car has already become a target. I would imagine that these thieves will be back as these cars are not just for joyriding, they are stolen to order and shipped abroad.
DLNN_DanGamer@reddit
Yup, hundreds of em and similar cars have been stolen on the south coast recently and shipped abroad. They finally caught the thieves in Bournemouth but they've been advising for years about chasing up Hyundai and similar brands who have keyless systems as people will leave the keys near the door and it's so easy for the thieves to take advantage.
HTS126@reddit
This issue only affects the Ioniq 5 (and maybe 6), OP has the original Ioniq which is not affected by the same problem
Goregoat69@reddit
I have a coworker that had a big issue with his new Omoda, (petrol version) a few days after moving to a new house the battery kept going flat, and they realised the issue was the car never really switched off because he kept the keys on his bedside table, at the front of the house, right above the drive where he parked nose in.
The garage he got it towed to explained it to him, it’s been a common issue for loads of brands.
Lt_Muffintoes@reddit
They don't need the keys any more. The keys could be in North America and they would still be able to steal the car in seconds. They'd have an easier time getting into and starting the car than you would
Harry_monk@reddit
How does that work? Is it no longer the relay thing they used to take advantage of?
My car keys dont transmit a signal if they are stationary, just wondering if I still need to worry about the car.
Lt_Muffintoes@reddit
The encryption is broken. They have a device which itself pretends to be the key. It doesn't use the signal from your key
Harry_monk@reddit
Thats reassuring. Looks like old fashioned physical lock and key is still the best option.
Lt_Muffintoes@reddit
Well, it's reassuring if your car is not one on which the encryption has been cracked, I guess!
MudgetBinge@reddit
I had a coworker who had hers stolen, then she got the same car AGAIN just for it to get stolen AGAIN.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
Ok that seems like a fair assessment, I didn't know that Hyundai offered security system upgrades, I'll get to calling them about that tomorrow, thanks.
Ecstatic_Effective42@reddit
A crook lock on the steering wheel would be a good move as well.
g1hsg@reddit
Disklok are far better, naturally they are also more expensive
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
I recently changed insurance firms and they've stated we must have a steering wheel lock whenever parked or insurance is void.
BSR1994@reddit
I’ve read somewhere that they offer a security device if I remember correctly, some sort of key but they charge £49 for it. If you ask Hyundai, I’m sure they’ll help you out with this.
EternalDroid@reddit
Ghost key immobiliser?
HTS126@reddit
Not sure if you've seen the other responses but the security upgrade was only for the Ioniq 5 (and maybe 6?) which were vulnerable to this problem, the original Ioniq was unaffected
crashgoggz@reddit
Hey, I have a 2020 Ioniq, are you talking about the Ioniq 5? or the classic (minicab spec, or windknife) Ioniq?

My moped got stolen once and I found it in a ditch across the road. They caused £750 in damage.
...I just never understood why they did that.
This feels a bit like that.
FancyAd3942@reddit
mine was attempted to be stolen. they damaged it, couldn't pick it up for a week as it didn't turn on- parked it in a nearby carpark with security. had the police knock on my door to ask questions because it was stolen and promptly burnt. oh the joys of kn0b heads, ofc my insurance didn't cover it so yay.
Pedantichrist@reddit

I thought ‘fire and theft’ was the absolute basic requirement in insurance, followed by comprehensive. Has this changed?

Keep a copy of your story handy for when the police suspect you of whatever red light or speeding or other illegal event that happened to you while you were driving it for that 15 minutes and made this all up.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
I know the story sounds dubious but it is what happened, I did not consider that if they drove recklessly it's going to look like it was me. Wraps.
Kooky-Letter-6141@reddit
It's wild how often these specific models get targeted. Definitely get that security upgrade from Hyundai ASAP, because they might just come back for a second try.
Petcai@reddit
It's not that complicated. They saw a vulnerable car, decided to steal it, took it for a drive, then realised it's a shite car and threw it back.
hanado63@reddit (OP)
What would compel them to bring it back to pretty much the same place they took it from and risk a confrontation, they could've left it just about anywhere else. Even if they changed their mind for whatever reason, that part doesn't make sense to me.
Petcai@reddit

avz008@reddit
They probably stole it to order then realized it wasn't the right spec or something spooked them. Either way get the security update ASAP. They know where you park now and might try again. Lucky you got it back honestly.
PastorGanj@reddit
My guess would be they relayed your keyless entry as you were walking back into your property. The machine glitched while they were coding a new key so they drove back to where it was parked to try and catch the relay again, couldn’t get the signal and left the car.
TwoValuable@reddit
What a strange story, I'm glad your car wasn't stolen.
It suddenly reminded me of a time with my first car when after a trip out (I was parked in a car park for some reason that's long forgotten), I managed to accidentally unlock someone else's car (same make, model and colour but wrong year). The only reason I cottoned on that I'd gotten into someone else's car was the slightly different looking dashboard and the multiple pink dangly charms from the interior mirror.
It turns out for that particular vehicle after years of wear and tear that the locks ended up being very easy to use and the keys were more sticks than specific keys. To demonstrate this my uncle once unlocked and started my car with the flat handle end of a butter knife.
Otherwise_whizley@reddit
Maybe 40 years ago I had a Ford Escort and once when in a car park I noticed another Escort parked up and the driver had locked their key in the car.
I offered to try with my key as I'd heard stories of being able to use the key to open multiple cars and it worked first time. The driver was more than happy 😁 .
justthrowa2@reddit
It's wild that they'd target a car like that just for a joyride, but the comment about it being a high-theft model for organized crime makes a lot of sense. Getting that security update from Hyundai is a solid plan, because this feels more like a failed attempt than a random prank. Glad you got it back with no damage, but that's definitely a chilling experience. The whole thing just leaves you with that weird, unsettled feeling of "what was the point?
Roadkill997@reddit
After they broke into your car the thieves quickly realised that you mum/dad/other family member is actually the Mr Big of the local crime family.

Maybe they noticed an engine rattle? Or poor steering?
QuantitySharp2662@reddit
Is it a push to start ?
The video I linked is a story of a woman getting into the wrong car that matched hers, and I think it's due to the car only needing a signal from the keyless fob to allow the car to be started with a button rather than inserting and turning a key.
Typical_Clock_5286@reddit
I used to work for a stolen car tracking company.
It wasn't uncommon for a car to get stolen and parked up nearby for a day so they could gauge if it was being tracked.
But even then I never heard of a car just being brought back.
I wonder if it wasn't the model they thought it was once they got inside.
StarryKnightLondon@reddit
It's shit.
Individual-Flow9158@reddit
Maybe their buyer didn't want it, or parts from that model?
Sometimes they park up stolen vehicles for days to even a week, to see if there are trackers inside. Yuors clearly did.
If I were you, I'd be very worried they, or someone who gave it to them, had easily cloned my key. Get a steering wheel lock, or preferably a pedal lock at the very least.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Police told me same. I got my car back as it had a flat I'd blown up to see if hole or rimmed. It was a hole. Police found it when checking an industrial estate.
That was a simple opportunistic theft (fishing through letterboxes for accessible keys) and assume this one was too. Got it back covered in silver dust as only one of 35 cars stolen that was found and police took it all seriously. Thibk they got ring in end.
Broke in, saw guy back, police likely called so why take risk? Just bail. But yes, I'd tighten security.

My Dad's Astra got stolen and used in a bank robbery. It was a 15 year old car at time and stolen at a shopping centre. He spent an hour looking for it as couldn't fathom why. In fairness to robbers, they dumped it relatively unscathed on some waste land - it needed rear suspension tightened. Police said it was because older models had bigger more accessible boots.
