Am i an Idiot? RTX 4070ti to RTX 5080?

So I literally just purchased a Asus TUF RTX 4080. My current gpu is a Asus ProArt RTX 4070 Ti. I use my gpu primarily for Topaz Video AI upscaling. I game maybe once or twice a year and it's GTAV. According to chatgpt and the like a RTX 5080 will be 50% faster when using Topaz Video AI compared to my RTX 4070 Ti. My current specs are as mentioned Asus ProArt RTX 4070ti, AMD Ryzen 9 7950x, 64GB DDR5 6000, MSI Mag B650M Mortar Wifi, Corsair SF850L 850W PSU. I paid around $875 in Jan 2024 for my RTX 4070ti and I now just paid around $1800 for this RTX 5080 gpu. Am i stupid? I am upscaling videos literally every single day for about 10hrs a day using Topaz Video AI.

Don't feel bad. I have 2 Pc's. Both have Asus Tuf Gaming 4070ti supers in them. I just replaced both of them with Asus Tuf Gaming 5080 OC cards. I got them from MicroCenter for $1,699.99 each. I was able to sell the 4070ti supers for $800.00 each. But I'm happy with them.

good to know. I'll be trying to sell my 4070ti locally. I am really limited in how i can sell stuff since paypal banned my account with no explanation. I'd like to get atleast $600 for it considering it's been undervolted the entire I have used it and still looks brand new.

Wait what site did you buy the 5080 off of?
I just bought one today off of Newegg that I've been tracking for a bit, lowest price I've seen in awhile was around $1200 and I just pulled the trigger at $1400.
I'm surprised you didn't find one around that price point.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
edit. i ended up cancelling that order and went with an Asus Prime RTX 5080 instead. It is still from a 3rd party seller on Walmart but about $400 less. The total was about $1300 but i also got a 3yr insurance plan through allstate.

walmart but sold and shipped from newegg.

Puget tested topaz and the 5000 series was slower than 4000 for some reason https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-amp-5080-ai-review/#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20Topaz%20Video%20AI,the%20RTX%204080%20&%204080%20SUPER, but that's from a year ago.
Its unlikely unlikely a 5080 is 50% faster than a 4070ti in this program, it's just another program and uses the GPU like anything so we can use general benchmarks to get an idea of it's performance and a 4070ti is always about 30% slower than a 5080 (for cuda, but topaz runs in tensor cores).
For Topaz the 5080/5090 has some weird optimization issue making it artificially slower according to puget's data. But thise benchmarks are old and I assume topaz has fixed the issue by now. If they did then a 5080 will be proportionally faster in topaz like it is in other tensor workloads, which is hard to find benchmarks for.
A 5080 has 336 fifth-generation tensor cores and a 4070ti has only 264 fourth-generation cores, so it has 27% more cores and they are newer and better cores too. I would suspect it should be around this much faster or more for optimized workloads, probably not 50% faster though like chatgpt thought.

I rendered a video earlier today and when i receive the 5080 i'm going to render the same video to see how much faster it is. I usually just go with 2x proteus or artemis and usually frame interpolation from 24 or 30fps to 60fps. All in all I'll def let you know.
aragorn18@reddit
Did you buy a 4080 or 5080?
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
i currently have a 4070ti and i just purchased a 4080. i paid around $890 for the 4070ti and now I just paid around $1800 for the 5080.
Bront20@reddit
Which is it, a 4080 or 5080?
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
jesus I'm sorry I have a 4070ti and just purchased the 5080
Bront20@reddit
That's all the confusion has been.

Wtf this has to be a troll

$1800 is pretty dumb for a 5080. The MSRP is $1000, and the 5070ti also has 16gb of vram and has a $750 MSRP. Even if the 5070ti is like $1000, that's still a better value than what you paid for the 5080
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
i was looking at a few factors the main being the model which has the most likely version of not catching my house on fire. I chose the asus tuf rtx 5080 because besides the nvidia founders edition it has the least accounts of the connector catching fire.
aragorn18@reddit
They all use the exact same power plug. The only reason you would see less accounts of failure is that less people are buying the obviously overpriced model.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
yeah, you can bet when i get the gpu i am absolutely going to make sure the connector is 100% seated correctly. The thing is with pc component prices being all over the place what gpu's are actually overpriced?
aragorn18@reddit
The point I was trying to make is that even if the 5080 is a significant upgrade in Topaz AI (which I'm not convinced it is) you overpaid for a really expensive version of the 5080. There's no reason to believe that the Asus TUF model is less likely to have the power connector melt.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
I cancelled the order. I'm sure I still overpayed but I went with the Asus Prime RTX 5080 which was about $500 less. FYI for my use-case it's basically a production workflow, not gaming. I am upscaling video using topaz for around 10hr a day so I'm looking for a GPU that won't is stable.
aragorn18@reddit
Probably a good choice. I'm really curious to hear how much faster your Topaz work flow ends up being on the new GPU. Please report back when you have a chance to test.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
It arrives on the 10th so I'll def let you know.
iSuckAtMechanicism@reddit
All of them have the power plug issue. It's a design issue.
Dorky_Gaming_Teach@reddit
You won't find an MSRP on a 5080 at 1k unless you get a drop from the Nvidia store. However, there are models in the 1.3-1.5 range.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
my 4070ti has 12GB of VRAM. It's the asus proart rtx 4070ti.
colin-java@reddit
Might be Canadian dollars, I'm from UK but $1800 sounds a lot

Why are you upscaling videos everyday ? I read below you’re not getting paid for this, so, is this a hobby ? Do you have disposable income to spend , or did the purchase go on a credit card ? Does this bring you joy without hurting financially ?
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
it is a hobby, I consider myself a data hoarder.
SadParty5662@reddit
Admitting you have a problem is the first step.
What are you upscaling , and what resolution ? Do you think we’ll soon hit the point where you can just feed a low res source and have it upscaled beautifully in real time ? Also, how much data are you sitting on ? I’m realizing I’m a bit of a hoarder myself, I think I have maybe 90TB of local storage between NAS and externals 😬.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
mostly 1080p to 4k. I think within 10yrs Topaz starlight will get to the point that their proteus and artemis models are. Which is to say you won't need a top tier gpu to upscale a 2 minute video in 4hrs like it currently is. Also yesterday i purchased a 22tb external drive which i plan on shucking. In total i should have around what you have in terms of storage.
ImFriendsWithThatGuy@reddit
I think you keep mixing up 40 series and 50 series in your post and comments leading to even more confusing responses from people.
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
yeah I have been accidentally typing 4080 a couple of times, I mean 5080.
ShredGuru@reddit
Yep. You're an idiot for a couple of reasons as far as I can tell.
AdBasic2725@reddit
I paid 999$ for my 4080 OC TUF sep 2024 Best Buy came with black myth wukong MSRP is a rare king most was telling me was stupid and should of bought 50 series there hard to get MSRP I scored my 150$ off
StunningPush8421@reddit
1800 usd?
Certainly on the high end for a 5080 but still a good upgrade over the 4070 ti
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
yeah and as mentioned I use it literally every single day for about 8 -10hrs a day for upscaling but after this upgrade maybe i can reduce that time by half.
crazybull02@reddit
If it's for work should have gone 5090 and deducted it for taxes if you itemize your return
Legitimate_Pea_143@reddit (OP)
it's not for work though. i just upscale a ton of videos everyday. I'm honestly afraid of getting a 5090 or even 4090 because of the huge rate at which 12vhpwr connectors have been burning up. Also as mentioned my psu is an 850W Corsair unit.
Organic_Ad3558@reddit
My suggestion: Return the 4080 immediately if you still can. You don’t need it — you’re going from the 4070 Ti straight to the 5080, which is the right move. Keeping the 4080 too would just be wasted money.
