The 90s - This Is What the Decade Sounds Like to Me. What's Your Picks?

So, if the 90s was in music form for you, what would it be?
hang_that_dj@reddit
Faith No More - Epic
Am lifelong grunge/alternative fan. But now I even have soft spot for those songs we heard a billion times on rock radio like “Walk on the Ocean,” “Found Out About You,” and “Name.” They’re not the cool-guy songs but they sound like the 90s to me too. I heard “Desperately Wanting” (Better than Ezra) the other day. It’s not “Evenflow or “Start Choppin’” but it’s a great song
classicsat@reddit
Lifelong (well teens at least) classic/hard rock fan.
I grew into the 90s music as it happened, at least what was on the radio and music videos.
classicsat@reddit
All over the lace, from bohemian post college (Spindoctors), to Spice Girls. Throw in the better EDM, and bar rock.
S1nnah2@reddit
I want to say a little something that's long overdue
The disrespect to women has got to be through
To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end
ONROSREPUS@reddit
For me personally it was.
Pantera
Metallica
Slipknot
Korn
Mudvayne
Megadeth
I was a bit on the heavier side then 98% of the people I went to school with.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I'm even heavier than that. Emperor, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Immolation. Lots of that stuff mixed in with Primus, David Bowie, and Frank Zappa.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I have listened to some of that since the 90's. Growing up in a small town you didn't hear about these bands. I opened up more when I went to college.
Atlantean_truth@reddit
Smashing Pumpkins is a damn good choice. I’d personally pick Cherub Rock off Siamese Dream.
Jellybeans74@reddit
The Breeders - “Cannonball”
SayOw@reddit
1998 the greatest live weekend occurred in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Friday the Smashing Pumpkins played a free concert in downtown Minneapolis. It was actually fairly underwhelming as they were in a dispute with their record label (or whatever) but did not play any of their hits that evening. Regardless, by most accounts, close to a million people showed up for that show.
The very next day was the clash of the titans, the Warp Tour and Ozzfest combined to have a mega-festival that was so epic MTV was doing live cut-ins from the show.
I was there and I still say it was a weekend where I had the most fun of my life. I was there with a bunch of friends, we are all under 30. Good times....good times.
Daetiralso@reddit
I was at that Ozzfest, but didn't learn about the SP concert until I got there and people were talking about it.
That Ozzfest is where I fell in LOVE with Powerman 5000, never heard them until then. And they opened the main stage

Liz Phair - Fuck and Run.
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
I've basically accepted that anytime CNN or anyone else brings up THE '90s, you'll hear the opening duhduhduh chords and drums kick in from the opening of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

😄
OGREtheTroll@reddit
Nobody mentions Alanis Morissette?
Hattkake@reddit
Nirvana, Immortal, Hallucinogen, Jethro Tull.
There is much, much more but if I had to pick just a few bands it would be those. Grunge, black metal, trance or whatever it is called and 1970s stuff.
trUth_b0mbs@reddit
Depeche Mode, Notorious BIG, Classic House, Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige

90’s were full of great music but no one ever seems to mentions British band, so I’ll add the Stone Roses
Butterfly_Cat777@reddit (OP)
I always thought the Stone Roses got very little love in the U.S. I think they got more exposure on Beavis & Butthead than anywhere else.
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
Love Spreads got some US modern rock play around the time of the first Oasis album. But yeah their most beloved album (first one) was basically ignored in the states.
reachers_toothbrush@reddit
I have fond memories of Suede.

wde335@reddit
Offspring - Come Out and Play (the “keep em separated” song)
Natalie Merchant - Carnival
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
Butterfly_Cat777@reddit (OP)
"Plush" was the first STP song I ever heard, and even though I love so many of their other songs, it'll always be my favorite of theirs.
Waffuru@reddit
Hmm... for me? Probably either Oingo Boingo or TMBG. Both had albums that were absolutely kick ass in the 90's. I still listen to Flood, Apollo 18, Boingo, and Oingo Boingo's Farewell Tour front to back from time to time. I listen to a lot of their other albums still, too... but these in particular just feel like the 90's XD
If I had to pick one song though? Hm... "Change" by Oingo Boingo.
Over-Capital8803@reddit
Alice in Chains - Man in the Box. Immediately jumped to mind.
oomchu@reddit
That's a difficult one. I'll keep it simple and go with No Rain by Blind Melon. However, There are a lot more bands that come to mind.
reachers_toothbrush@reddit
Garbage
Fullonski@reddit
Decade split in half for me.
Early 90s was a mix of grunge and blues, Pearl Jam and Stevie Ray Vaughan being the favourites.
Then I got tired of self-indulgent whining and the rest of the decade was house and techno with DJ mixes by Sasha being the favourite.
t65789@reddit
Crow and Judgment Night Soundtracks.
Ignignokt73@reddit
(To me) Early: Pantera - Mouth for War
Middle: Radiohead - Street Spirit
Late: Massive Attack - Inertia Creeps
zica-do-reddit@reddit
Saw them live in São Paulo in 1996, it was epic.

That whole album is perfection. Some old school story-telling hip hop. Sucks that he got burned and dropped out of the scene.
Extension_Chart2641@reddit
"I Swear", "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"! I'm "Truly Madly Deeply" "Amazed" that you'll "Always Be My Baby"..."The Power of Love" is in a "Kiss from a Rose"...now "Kiss Me" cause "This Is How We Do It"...it's a "Beautiful Life"
Mistervimes65@reddit
Concrete Blonde - “Tomorrow Wend”, Green Day – “Basket Case”, “What’s my Age again?” - Blink 182, “All I want” - The Offspring, “Infected” - Bad Religion.
Just off the top of my head.

KMFDM - Light
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Ride the Mindway
This Ascension - Ill met by Moonlight
Lycia - Pray
OMC - How Bizarre
TheInternetHeel@reddit
Honestly, and this might get flack...but "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals. Releasing near the end of the decade in 1998, I just feels like the song that encapsulates.
If I'm splitting the decade in 3 parts though
The beginning - "3 Strange Days" - School of Fish
The middle - "1979" - Smashing Pumpkins
The end - "You Get What You Give" - New Radicals
HenryInRoom302@reddit
That song is always gonna get cranked if it comes on while I'm in my car. I fell like it's one of the best driving songs for our generation. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the song in general, but whenever I hear it, it gives me such a nostalgia boost because that song was everywhere in the late 90s and it always takes me back to my misspent youth.
FancyRise@reddit
Definitely not my favorite but Closing Time gives me the 90’s feels.
abombSFCA@reddit
The Breeders Last Splash.
Possible_Shoulder_50@reddit
Yes. That song reeks of the 90s. In a good way of course.
abombSFCA@reddit
Ooops I meant the whole album. Did t realize we were doing just songs…. Cannonball if so
Possible_Shoulder_50@reddit
Either way. The whole album rocks. Listened to it last week.

Somewhere mixed in there towards the end is Alanis Morrissette.
niff007@reddit

The '90's always smelled like Teen Spirit.
Like it or not, that song in 1991 really set the stage (musically) for the decade.

According to Cobain Mudhoney set the stage.

If we’re going with The Pumpkins, I’m picking Cherub Rock all day every day. That layered wall of fuzzy guitar loudness is definitive 90s rock.

It wouldn’t be this. If you’re referencing the Pumpkins, please do so with any song from Gish or Siamese Dream. Anything else is pedestrian.

lol. I love both of those dearly. But the world really is a vampire. :p
