The dr will tell you to remove FODMAPs from your diet. Unfortunately this also means sucking the joy out of food so I just keep on tootin
Affectionate_Day7543@reddit
FODMAP seems to get hailed a lot in the chronic illness community as a way of helping manage symptoms by (supposedly) reducing inflammation. But no one talks about how bloody boring it is. Just looking at the list of what you’re allowed to eat makes me depressed. I cba to make myself even more miserable
-dylpickle@reddit
Honestly it’s like as it is I can’t do a lot of things I want to do bc of my fibro/cfs the last thing I am doing is remove garlic and tomatoes from my food esp cuz I’m already lactose intolerant ‼️
starsandshards@reddit
I have the same conditions and I'll be damned if I change my diet. I'm AuDHD too so it's like... I like what I like and I need to stick to it for months until I'm sick of it!
-dylpickle@reddit
Omg we might be the same person bc I also am audhd too 😅
starsandshards@reddit
LOL as if we don't have enough issues with food and then this on top wahhh.
whizzymamajuni@reddit
You don’t eliminate them all forever, though. You cut them all out and slowly reintroduce them, find out which ones you’re sensitive to, and either cut them out or eat them in manageable doses. I’ve had to cut out gluten, onions, mushrooms, brassicas, bananas and milk (but not cheese or yoghurt), and I can have the occasional ice cream but I have to be careful with lactose. My diet is wide and varied and I really enjoy cooking and eating, and I don’t stink any longer. I also feel less unwell generally and it has helped with my chronic pain and fatigue. So don’t let yourself be talked out of it by how boring the elimination phase looks, that is literally only part of the process!
-dylpickle@reddit
I do know I absolutely cannot eat aubergine which is my biggest pain bc I love aubergine :(

I used to work in a health food shop and one time a man came in looking for charcoal biscuits (designed to reduce the odours of flatulence). When I told him we were unfortunately sold out, he went white as a sheet and said "Oh Christ she's going to kill me...". So based on that, I'd recommend charcoal biscuits.
Echoshungryhippos@reddit
We fed our black lab charcoal biscuits when his farts were especially egregious. When he farted everyone would go "Aaaargh Ben! Out you smelly xxxx" or make other noises of displeasure and he'd leave the room. In the end he'd fart and leave instantly before we even moaned, kinda like pavlovs dog. I'm not sure the biscuits worked tbh. RIP Ben.
littlegreycells_11@reddit
Aww bless him, he was probably leaving the room so he didn't have to smell it himself lol. We used to feed our chocolate lab charcoal biscuits too, to try and help with her fishbreath bless her. She wasn't a massive farter thank goodness, because she was actually afraid of them! If she did one, she'd look around all panicked like "omg what was that?! Where did that come from?!" and even if we made the noise with our mouths she'd go all silly 😂 she was such a special girl, we lost her in February, having not long turned 14. How old was your Ben? Do you have a photo? This was Roxy
MaggieMcB@reddit
Rip run free on rainbow bridge beautiful Roxy 💞 💞 I lost my big puppy at 14 almost a year ago , she also used to look at her butt wondering where the noise was coming from too 😅
SpudFire@reddit
I used to dogsit for my friends dog quite often. If you farted near him and it smelled quite bad, he'd give you a look and walk away. Quite understandable really.
As he got older, his farts got really bad. He'd fart, smell it, give you a dirty look and then trot off. It was you, you smelly bastard!
Sorry for your loss
Echoshungryhippos@reddit
Oh she was beautiful! What a pretty face. You just can't beat labs, such lovely natured beasts they are. Alas for a photo I would have to raid the old albums at my mums, Ben has been gone 31 years now, (I cant believe its that long ago!) Before we all had our smartphones to take pics all the time. We had a golden lab when I was a child, she had puppies and they would crowd round my legs as a toddler and knock me down in their excitement. Two of the pups went to a children's home, one went to live with the family whose dog had got ours pregnant and the rest went to others nearby. I doubt children's homes would have dogs these days, too many rules, health and safety, risk assessments etc. The photos of the pups and their mum Tasha are black and white! Makes me feel old. It is lovely to be able to whip out our phones and take pics of our pets being their daft selves these days. I am dogless now, which is how the cat would like it to stay! She's my first ever cat, Kaspar.
dannydrama@reddit
Cats are just as bad as dogs when it comes to farting except they won't eat charcoal for you. This bastard sat on my shoulder last week and literally farted directly in my ear, I told him any more of that and I'll swing him round by the tail. 😂
MadWifeUK@reddit
Cat farts are way worse than dog farts! At least with dogs you get the sound as a warning. Cats are the blue print of silent but deadly. You'll be sitting watching telly, cat purring away on your lap, then all of a sudden the smell will hit. Your cry of "For gods sake Mollie!" Will alert the rest of the family to leave the room and don their hazmat suits.
Mollicent, Empress of the Stinky Arse.
dannydrama@reddit
That's a "what you doing about it?" face if I've ever seen one.
littlegreycells_11@reddit
She really was, she was perfect. We got her from lab rescue when she was 3, and she just fitted in to our family perfectly, such a good girl. I have lots of pics of her on my profile if you want to see her gorgeousness. My mum has decided she's getting a fox red puppy now, as thats the one colour she hasn't had. We went to meet them on Monday to pick one out, they were sooo cute (I've never had a puppy before, or seen a litter of such young puppies, they were absolutely adorable! I still think my mum is a bit mad getting a puppy at her age, but what can I do?!
Aww how long have you had Kaspar for?
I agree about phones, it's so easy these days. I'd say probably 95% of the photos on my phone are of Roxy. She hated having her photo taken for some reason, which made no sense to me when she was so photogenic! So I'd have to stealthily open the camera app and be like "surprise!" haha.
I bet the kids at the children's home absolutely loved having a puppy there! It was probably really therapeutic for them. You're right, there's no way they'd allow it now, but they'd perhaps allow a PAT dog to visit.
redvood00@reddit
I'm absolutely creasing up at Ben farting and immediately leaving the room 🤣 I'm having a stressful day, thanks for the laugh 😆😂😉
Buckenboo@reddit
Well, this caused an unexpected belly laugh for me - "in the end he'd fart and leave instantly before we even moaned" I can see the look of resignation on his face as he left the room lol! RIP Ben, you was a legend in your own home x

My first job was a delivery drivers assistant, and we drove a bit 17.5 to truck around Scotland delivering wholesale groceries to shops etc.
My driver was a cool guy who I bonded with over music and movies. Shit was the best.
That's when I learned I can't eat onions. They make me do the most aromatic farts like there is a spice market within walking distance and they're frying all sorts.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Wow
Warm-Marsupial8912@reddit
Worked out mine were due to FODMAPs. Unfortunately all my favourite foods have FODMAPs, so I live with it and blame the dog
ToughImprovement276@reddit
I followed the Fodmap diet for a year or two (as my individualised plan) and found that I could reintroduce many mid to high fodmap foods with little to no symptoms, even when stacking.
My theory is my gut was probably irritated or perhaps damaged in some way and going low fodmap for a time helped it to heal.
I never really did the whole elimination thing the way they describe. I just ate meals, took note of how I felt after and cross-referenced the ingredients against the Fodmap lists.
If I was gassy or something after the meal, I’d eliminate the high Fodmap foods or stay within the recommended portion sizes. If not I’d keep them in. I was also very mindful of stacking - eating loads of high Fodmap things together.
I’m at the point now where it’s mainly garlic that’s my biggest issue. And this is coming from someone who’d have the worst diarrhoea from half a glass of juice that happened to also contain apple juice.
It can work I think, but the way they suggest going about it feels very unsustainable. Especially if you find at first that a lot of your favourite foods are high Fodmap and triggering.
Realistic-Gap-2562@reddit
This is reassuring and will help motivate me to try again.
ToughImprovement276@reddit
Wishing you the best of luck!
Medical_Warthog1450@reddit
Kinda similar to you, low FODMAP helped symptoms but didn’t get to the root issue.
I find intermittent fasting helps A LOT with my gut health, having a shorter eating window in the day means the gut has more time to rest, cleanse, recover etc and I have minimal bloating and gas now even with FODMAPS.
There is evidence behind this too! (Caveat that ofc not everything works for everyone.)
QuantitySharp2662@reddit
Aw Jesus I had lamb curry the other day. And the next day.
Very loud and sort of "experimental" sounding farts that left me feeling warm and a mix of amused and disgusted.

QuantitySharp2662@reddit
Not so much pride as shock. Like I was singing and hit a note I never thought I could.

All is fine as long as you are adopting the pose of Freddie Mercury during a bout of unexpected flatulence.
newtonbase@reddit
I've gone through the FODMAP testing recently. I'm now avoiding my triggers but have enzymes I can take when I can't/won't such as this week on holiday. My stomach is flatter and my bathroom visits are less frequent.
Realistic-Gap-2562@reddit
Same I followed a low fodmap diet for a week. Had a flat stomach and no pain from trapped wind but I was miserable because food is life. So I have went back to my normal foods but sitting in pain at work I'm starting to think about going back to low fodmap. I've heard you can start introducing foods once you've done it for a while too it's just taking the leap again and knowing I'll be miserable for a while :(

As I've got older, I've been having the same issue. Not only have I been needing to fart more often. I also never had a problem letting them out silently but can't seem to do it anymore. I cut out wheat, especially for dinner, and take a tablet probiotic. I figured out my excessive gas is due to slow motility, so I focus on maintaining a fibre-rich diet and exercise as regularly as I can (with a specific emphasis on strengthening and stretching my core).

Chamomile & liquorice tea helps a bit
Or ginger tea/gummies/sweets/etc
Keep a mental log of if it gets worse after certain types of food (spicy/heavy dairy/etc) & adjust diet as needed - don’t need to cut things out completely just be aware of potential triggers, for instance, if you know dairy is a trigger & you’re going for a job interview probably don’t eat mac & cheese for lunch

Slightly extreme approach: I got diagnosed with ADHD, started taking medication (Elvanse), and it completely fixed all my severe bowel and flatulance issues I had for my whole life. I used to run to the toilet throughout the day just for it to be an awful fart, now I don’t. They say ADHD is linked to irregular bowel behaviour.
Less extreme approach: peppermint capsules are great! Used to reduce the farts and bloating.

nervousbikecreature@reddit
Wow that's fascinating. I know gut issues are often comorbid with autism/ADHD but I never expected that meds might help with those. Makes me even more impatient for my assessment 😅
Techmaniaalex@reddit
I didn’t either! It has been one of the game changers for me (+ the getting up easier in the morning is great too). I think the IBS might be linked to the anxiety that I don’t have as much now- I would often need the toilet in nervous situations, but the meds help me ignore those thoughts!

ddmf@reddit
Windeze and sauerkraut - admittedly for the first wee while your farts will be even worse thanks to the sulforous brassica, but after a while the fermentation goodies kick in and the smell vastly reduces.
Austin-Flours@reddit
Homemade kefir sorted my husband out. When we went on holiday and I fell out of the habit of making it, proper live sauerkraut or kimchi works well too. He puts the sauerkraut/kimchi in his cheese sarnies so only eats it once a day.
I think for some people it's a result of a poor gut microbiome. He's white English and grew up not eating a great deal of fibre compared to me (Brit Indian).
Fit-Host-6145@reddit
It sounds like diet is the common thread here, whether it's identifying triggers like FODMAPs or using remedies like charcoal. I've heard good things about those charcoal supplements for managing the smell, though I haven't tried them myself. Honestly, sometimes just knowing the cause makes it easier to accept and plan around. My partner and I have a similar understanding, though our poor dog gets unfairly blamed way too often.

Yes actually a high amount of the lactose is eaten off by the grains, i used/use it as a dairy substitute for everything, made my own cheese, butter, salad dressing etc. Slowly and slowly i started to reintroduce actual milk and so far i can consume it without farting every step.

Sorbitol is notorious for causing … gastrointestinal activity, shall we say?… since it doesn’t break down properly and ends up as bacteria food that then ferments, which can cause gas, cramps, and bloating.
However, it is also good for dental health when used in chewing gum. Not nearly as good as xylitol, though, which also comes with tummy issues when eaten.
MelibuBerbie@reddit
Gas ✅ cramps ✅ bloating ✅

I spent a month in India working for Unicef around 25 years ago. Got terribly ill, half my body weight fell out of my arse. Have had terrible gut problems ever since and have a bit of a reputation as a farter. Went to a nutritionist on the request of my wife and it was all a bit odd really, pretty sure i was being sold snake oil but at the end she produced a list if foods i should stat away from/am intolerant to and every single one of the ones i know bloat me out were on that list, along with a load more that i’ve not had since. I was off the scale for intolerance to alcohol (i kind of knew this anyway as can not handle booze) and consequently have now been sober for 14 years. She said i was the first person she met intolerant to tea, which was odd but made sense too (it makes me fart). Something which stayed with me she said you can cut out a food for 20 years which is great for your gut but if you have it once it undoes all those years of progress.
TL:DR see a nutritionist to see what makes you farty.

Duck Quacks get a "Did Someone Step on a Duck?" (MB), Big Roarers get a "Was that a Racecar/Dinosaur", otherwise it's a "Who Did that".
Pircster38@reddit
Just fart near a kid, dog or old person and they'll get the blame.

Charcoal tablets.
I’ve been farting for over 50 years and these work a treat if you’re going to be in company.
Amazing-Potato8013@reddit
I eat a LOT of fibre so mine are very frequent but surprisingly mostly odourless so I’m kind of at peace with it, obviously I will hold it in in polite company/public as they are pretty loud.
Nicki3000@reddit
The people who are saying "I just let it out" clearly either don't work in an office or are able to hold it for a long time.
Following a low FODMAP diet helped me massively, as did quitting fizzy drinks and drinking a morning coffee...
Beneficial-Reason949@reddit
I work on a hospital ward so it’s generally assumed to be a patient thankfully. Although we’re all too used to each others bodily functions so tend to just own it
localmansayshello@reddit
I just farted 4 times in quick succession under the duvet. It's contained atm but if I crack the covers it's gonna be some Ark Of The Covenant stuff
Connect-Bug9988@reddit
I was walking out of Lidl one time last year, and lifted my leg to let one out, and it roared, then looked behind me to see a very attractive lady looking uncomfortable.
I thought I'd lighten the mood and said "sorry miss, I think I put too much effort I to that one, it might be a wiper" and she walked off giggling uncontrollably!
Glad she had a sense of humour, could have turned out way more uncomfortable for the pair of us 🤣

My scientist friend made me some ingenious trousers, which contain the noxious gases. They are then stored and used as rocket fuel later on.

Digestives enzyme supplements are a lifesaver for some people
Lumpy_Benefit666@reddit
I deal with it by farting.
I have ibs so i dont always trust my farts in public though, which has led to many a fart into the bowl
Turbofox_89@reddit
Honestly, I’m 36 years old and there will never be a time in my life where I don’t find farting hilariously funny. Yes it’s immature, yes my GF scalds me bitterly, yes it stinks.
Breathe deeper, it’ll go faster.

Once I started eating a large variety of plants (I have 50+ different plants a week but you don’t have to dive right into having that many) my issues mostly calmed down

By living alone 💨💨💨

Everyone farts, I just roll with it tbh
JustLetItAllBurn@reddit
Does the rolling distract people from the farting?

I worked out I was lactose intolerant and had a diet heavy in dairy, now I take lactase and don't have a milkshake every day.
BiscuitsDippedInTea@reddit
You’re probably intolerant to something your eating…pay for a test
scream_schleam@reddit
The intolerance tests available in the market are not scientifically accurate unfortunately. The best way to rule something out would be to eliminate it from their diet for a good few weeks and then see if they feel better.
However, allergy tests done through the NHS are accurate but allergies are not the same as an intolerance.
alijam100@reddit
I had one of these intolerance tests done years ago, came out with like 8 things. I went one by one eliminating things to absolutely no change in how I felt (had a few other symptoms too)
Took another few years mentioning something to a doctor for them to suggest FODMAPs

thekabagool@reddit
When I know i’m going to be alone I eat whatever I want. If i’m going to be in public or with even close people then pretty much only eat chicken, bland veg and rice
MoodyStocking@reddit
I don’t eat foods that make it worse if I have to be in public and generally just to a minimum. Even when I avoid those foods I’m still very farty but at least they’re inoffensive
Always carry loperamide, which works for the farts as well as the shits.
Tried peppermint oil capsules, useless. Peppermint tea ? Maybe helps a bit, unsure.
That wind-eze stuff is useless, at least for me
