I hope I would not piss the turks off
DnDevrim@reddit
Shawurma comes from a Turkish word "Çevirme". We call it " Döner " atm.
Ep1cOfG1lgamesh@reddit
Nah not pissed off at all. Its your countries adaptation. We also eat it with rice (different sort obviously), vegetables and sometimes yoghurt. And the meat is a bit different. enjoy your meal :)
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
That doesn't look like döner at all
cosmico11@reddit
If you were Portuguese you'd do three backflips about how your beautiful prestigious cuisine is being ruined by the foreigners

Well I'm gonna try that in the future
Humble_maple@reddit
It looks great!! I would eat it.
theyanardageffect@reddit
Disappointment.
Xitztlacayotl@reddit
Not turkish, but having been to the Philippines, I can say that their food is mostly ridiculous from the Balkan perspective.
Gimmebiblio@reddit
Can you elaborate a bit? I have an online Filipino friend that regularly posts what her family cooks and I almost never understand what the heck I'm looking at. 😛
Xitztlacayotl@reddit
Bread - sweet Sausage - sweet Fried bacon - sweet
No, most of their food is great, like barbecue, wok noodles etc. But some shit is crazy like thoee above haha
Gimmebiblio@reddit
Sweet bread and bacon sounds very American lol! But sweet sausage?? 😳
On the other hand I suppose they think that our food is weird.
Polka_Tiger@reddit
I know others explained that döner comes from "to turn" so it means it was cooked while turning but I want to highlight something. Döner can be served with anything, glass noodles, risotto anything.
The only thing important is how the meat was cooked, on a spit and turning.
In turkey the popular accompaniments are rice and bread. Ekmek arası döner (döner between bread) or pilav üstü döner (döner over rice)
So if the meat is cooked a certain way it becames döner with x dish.
ya_pidoras_@reddit
better ask on r/askmiddleeast
ekintelli@reddit
It doesn't piss me off. It a Turkish dish found it's way to levant and from there to Philippines. Of course it will chance and adapt. It looks nice as well, served with yellow rice and it has probably a lot of pinoy alterations. I'm curious out it's taste. Also what is that white sauce?
Osakaayumu_2002@reddit (OP)
Mayonnaise maybe
ThingCandid9553@reddit
Shawarma is the Arab version of kebab.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
We Balkan Turks don't have döner either.
Döner was invented by Anatolian Turks in Germany.
0a_boy0@reddit
Döner was a thing in Turkey even before they started to go to germany.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
So what? We Balkan Turks don't have that.
By Balkan Turks, I mean us Turks in the Balkans, not Turks in Turkey.
Kebab and doner aren't specific to our cuisine.
suvarimiralay@reddit
The fellow just wanted to tell this is wrong.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
It depends on which Turks you ask.
I don't know Turkish cuisine very well.
I only know from my Turkish neighbors in different parts of Turkey that they have different cuisines.
We Balkan Turks (by which I mean us Turkish speakers in the Balkans, in countries like Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Romania) don't have food like the OP's in the picture.
NomadController@reddit
No, we don’t claim that it’s invented in germany.
Germans are trying to claim it and we are very annoyed when they try to do it. You should rethink your knowledge.
suvarimiralay@reddit
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
You misunderstood me.
I meant doner kebab in Germany. German-Turks claim it was invented in Germany. You can read that everywhere.
By that, I mean doner kebab as it's eaten in Germany.
I don't know if it's the same style as in Turkey.
Here's what I read:
https://www.berlinfoodstories.com/editorials/a-brief-history-of-the-doner-kebap
oldyellowcab@reddit
The döner we eat in Turkey was invented in Turkey, the migrant workers carried it to Germany, and changed it to Germans’ taste. In Turkey, basically we don’t put any dressings on döner (except hot tomato sauce and hot salty butter), but the in Germany they do.
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit

Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
Sabır ya gece gece
acenkt@reddit
Lol okay, here’s anatolian turks inventing it in germany in 1850s
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
The döner kebab, as it is known today in Germany as a sandwich, was largely developed in West Berlin in the early 1970s. The Turkish guest worker Kadir Nurman is often considered its main founder, having sold the meat in bread at the Zoo train station in 1972. Other sources cite Nevzat Salim (1969) or Mehmet Aygün (1971) as pioneers.
acenkt@reddit
Wow brain rot is unmatched ✨ denying the photo evidence, back tracking and everything 😂
My dude I am an old fart Balkan Turk as well, and I clearly remember going to edirne and eat doner in 60s, but I assume it is also not true because you don’t think so.
I do agree that we don’t have it in our local cuisine, however it doesn’t mean turkey(or turkish cuisine) doesn’t have it.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
Why are you attacking me? I'm just posting what Turks in Germany are saying.
You can read, right?
I'm just relaying information about doner kebabs in Germany.
Then you should request the deletion of these Wikipedia pages if it's wrong.
Don't attack me.
Stormrage44@reddit
Are you mentally challenged? If I open a pizza shop and put sauce on it in Turkey will then pizza become a Turkish food?
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
ya kes lan...bana yazma.

Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit

acenkt@reddit
I am not trying to attack you, apologies if it sounds like it. I mean I shared photo evidence but yet you are still backtracking and saying nonsense.
It shouldn’t be too hard to admit when you are mistaken. I do know how to read, but you might not comprehend what you write.
Because the message I read and responded says “doner was invented in germany”, which is just not true. The same message does not mention “relaying info” etc at all. Don’t be a slimeball, nobody likes that type.
Fiery_Flamingo@reddit
Fun fact, shawarma comes from Turkish “çevirme”, which means “to rotate”.
Döner means “(it) rotates”.
Gyro means “to rotate”.
Responsible-Door-634@reddit
I don't remember eating it, but it looks delicious.
kurwalover@reddit
turks dont eat such kind of rice
Osakaayumu_2002@reddit (OP)
That's java rice thing we have in the philippines considering that we're southeast Asian nation
kurwalover@reddit
interesting I thought arabs, iranians, pakis and indians had this way I didn't know it was a thing in south east asia
I also never encountered in cambodia, vietnam and thailand
MetroDodoPasDeBoulot@reddit
North america has shawarna with rice
Osakaayumu_2002@reddit (OP)
Well our neighbors are austronesian Muslims such as the Malaysians and indonesians
Commercial_Law_1689@reddit
We do put saffron in Pilav in places. My grandmother from bolu made saffron pilav often.
Only-A-Redditor@reddit
im not from the balkans but shawarma is a levantine dish (borrowed from turkish çevirme "to rotate") for a kind of wrap made with turkish doner kebab since its made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie. its basically a doner kebab wrap, so by definition, its a sandwich, and more specifically a wrap.
even if the meat looked like doner, it'd be more like doner with rice than shawarma rice, but hey, there are no rules to culture. its anyones game.
No-Championship-4632@reddit
Wrap it in a pita bread, noone will notice the difference.
everonglory@reddit
We've already been eating döner with rice for a very long time bro. Döner in bread or wrap is actually the newer invention.
dumdumb1st@reddit
Pon appetit! nice work, although it isn't a way you'd see Shawarma presented in but I bet it tastes delicious.
I understand you didn't know that part of the world or the history of cuisines.
I know little to nothing about the history of Philippines, BUT I need to highlight that Shawarma is levantine, NOT Turkish in no shape or form.
Stormrage44@reddit
Shawarma is NOT a seperate food. It is chicken döner. What a joke!
volcano156@reddit
Shawarma's just a cheap copy of döner just like gyro, even the name is turkish
dumdumb1st@reddit
Right, whatever makes you sleep at night
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
???? I thought shawarma was Arabic?
Fiery_Flamingo@reddit
Döner/shawarma/gyro are dishes invented in Ottoman era. Many ex-Ottoman countries have their regional versions with similar names.
Börek/boureki/byurek/burek/boreg is another example. Different groups in the empire have their own versions of the same concept today. Baklava is another example.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
You're claiming that we Balkan Turks eat this food, as the OP posted, in the Balkans (not Turkey)?
Where?
We from Dobruja don't recognize the food in the picture.
Sorry.
Fiery_Flamingo@reddit
My family are Turks from east of Thessaloniki, we have döner.
The food in the picture is a Filipino dish, it’s different.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
Your döner looks like the ones in Germany, interesting.
Like in Ada Kaleh-Dobruja, the Turks don't have that...and neither do the Yörüks from Radovis in North Macedonia.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit

Asking Turks anything about an Arab food is more ragebait.
TheLemonLime@reddit
Only asking Turks too on this sub when r/askturkey exists lol
Stormrage44@reddit
Hey bro, some context for you. Shawarma is an Arabic pronounciation of the Turkish word çevirme which translates to "to turn". We call it doner which similarly translate "turner". It is a misconception to call doners english version as shawarma just because it has "w" and "sh".
The thing is doner is either made thin slices of beef/lamb meat on top of each other or with chicken filet and/or legs. Now what's in the picture doesn't look like doner. It looks like flaked meat roast. But, rice goes good with doner and has been served alongside it here aswell. Also onion slices with tomato and cucumbers is very common aswell. Enjoy!
Bergfried@reddit
Delicious 😋
Rich_Beautiful7124@reddit
Looks great, enjoy the food.
immacomment-here-now@reddit
Looks legit
ShitassAintOverYet@reddit
It doesn't really look like Döner/Shawarma but having döner meat with rice is also super common in Turkey. It's a fire combination, enjoy your meal!
Annoying_guest@reddit
Doesn't matter what food is served there is always a Turk seated at the table
yalnzaylak@reddit
Can't reply to this proper, eating some stuff right now.
heisweird@reddit
Turks have been eating doner with rice for decades. It's not something new for us tbh.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&hs=c4zU&udm=2&q=pilav%20ustu%20doner
PomegranateOk2600@reddit
looks interesting, but doner is much better than shorma
Nardugan1881@reddit
Shawarma dont have a menaing in Arabic = çevirme means turnie , döner = the one that turns,
Hungry_Battery_Eater@reddit
Canada has Shawarma Poutine, which is even more of a (delicious) monstrosity. But this looks pretty good, enjoy!
