Can UK be described as a rip off place to live?

With cost of living and how high everything is can UK be classed as a rip off place to live.
Basic housing is super expensive, food is very expensive, transport is costing loads. This is just the surface.
Does anyone think differently?

Do you honestly think we’re the only ones going through this shit?

I am honestly starting to REALLY get sick of this "Everything is terrible now" mentality a lot of people online have.

This sub has been particularly dire these last few days, to the point I think it's just bots stirring misery.
PiscineIllusion@reddit
Oh it's not just this sub, it's everywhere. This sub is pretty bad in general for attracting the weirdos, but everywhere you look, everyone is convinced that 2026 is somehow the worst year in human history. It's pathetic.

Our food is actually among the cheapest in the developed world, and our healthcare certainly is. Housings the big problem, along with student loan costs.

I have friends who recently moved from Canada and they cannot believe how cheap the prices in Tesco/Sainsbury’s are.
So probably not.
ContextRules@reddit
Its less expensive than when I lived in America or Norway. Its comparative and highly dependent on where in the UK you live and what your lifestyle is.

UK nowhere near the this list TBH: https://wise.com/gb/cost-of-living/index-by-country#ranking

We really need an Automod filter thing at this point here, to filter out all these shitposts.

It’s not a shitpost, it’s a shit post 😄

It's expensive . Ireland is more expensive.

Taxed very high with little to show for it- I think that’s the biggest rip off honestly. (I’m American but lived in the UK 7 years. I’ve also lived in China and Norway just for reference as I’ve experienced work/life in quite a few places.)
Pros and cons to everywhere for sure, but I do think the UK is becoming less affordable due to the wages and tax.
OhNoDobe@reddit
The problem we have is that it's much harder for us to visualise something like buying a home, let alone building one, in Britain on the average salary.
Foreign workers benefit from the motivation that they can actually spend the wage on affording a home and/or business back home.
As much as it "seems cheaper" to hire foreign nationals because the companies don't have to pay towards national insurance but it costs the country as resources are siphoned off.
The UK is a brilliant investment for, let's say, rich people. People with connections. It's also good for those with cheap plans in their home countries where they can spend 5 years working here and go home to a comfy life.
I'd you don't have family to work together with, or you're not in the local circles for manual work then you either sell 75% of your life away to a low salaries position that expects constant overtime or you have to enjoy what's left.
To be honest, even those that seem a bit hard off in the UK generally live fairly well. I struggle for money each month but stretch to afford some luxuries like a ps5 which was on credit.
It's definitely becoming worth looking elsewhere, like Europe. But it's not a total rip off, easy to feel stuck though in my opinion.
SemtaCert@reddit
No it isn't a "rip off" compared to other countries.
It's actually cheaper or similar priced to a lot of other places you would expect to be cheaper and a much better place to live.
Any-Philosopher6930@reddit
This country is still one of the greatest to life in Europe. Obviously it isn’t perfect, but it offers one of the best possible quality of life for a regular person.
FamSands@reddit
Canadian food prices would make you rethink! Been a rip off here for quite some time & every year they seem to double down on the price hikes! House price is the only thing not having me rush back home!
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
"Rip Off Britain" was a hashtag before hashtags existed. Constant news thread in the 90s in the media. The economy boomed for a bit so we could get cheap food and goods, then low interest rates helped keep em down after the financial crisis. Now we're back after too much turmoil and worse off again.

Where’s faring better?
thecraftybee1981@reddit
The UK has the most affordable groceries in Europe. Housing is expensive everywhere. Public transport is pretty expensive compared to other places, but petrol is a similar level to most of Western Europe.
Clear-Lifeguard-3762@reddit
no it just like anywhere else , british people are just brainwashed into believing everywhere else is better
sammyglumdrops@reddit
Compared to where?
