Lance8282@reddit
Underrated musician, for sure.
stubept@reddit
Always felt like he was supposed to have the career that John Mayer ended up having. But that when it was offered to him, he was just like, "no thanks. I'll pass."
volchenkovblock@reddit
Saw them live in Montreal touring this album. Awesome show.
spiderjohnx@reddit
From Stryper?
slowsoul77@reddit
I like this record more now, than I did when it came out.
No_Rain_1543@reddit
Loved this song and Robert Quine’s guitar work was insane 🤘
lobstah4@reddit
Went to WHFS' HFStival at RFK Stadium in '95. Lots of very different acts, but when Matthew played his set, EVERYONE sang along to EVERY song. I guess he was the thing that everyone could agree on. Great times.
It seemed to me that whenever I went to other peoples' houses in that era, everybody had a copy of Girlfriend.
Friendly_Tell6664@reddit
I added him last month on my Spotify playlist… & Veruca Salt, Hum & jawbreaker
Friendly_Tell6664@reddit
… and
Archers of Loaf 🤘🏽
squee_bastard@reddit
Jawbreaker has been my favorite band since I was 15, this comment made me smile.
PresidentSuperDog@reddit
As much as I liked Jawbreaker in my youth, I enjoy listening to Jets to Brazil as an adult so much more. I think Blake’s lyrics just improved so much with maturity.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Love Veruca Salt!

Did a couple three CDs called under the covers with Susanna Hoff's of the Bangles and their fantastic many songs you know and some surprises
Disastrous-Exit7614@reddit
I loved that album. I only owned two
Blondisms@reddit
For a second I thought this thread was about the Matthew Sweet who was the front man for the Christian "metal" band, Stryker.
I am so very relieved it is not.

jimbobwe-328@reddit
I remember him. He was 100 percent fun.
PruneEuphoric7621@reddit
This is on my list of perfect albums. Beginning to end. ❤️
Highplowp@reddit
Don’t he play all the instruments on that album? And sang- really talented- and it was like a bridge between the Beatles/Neil Young’s crazy horse(drums and guitars to me) and grunge/alternative, yet perfect pop leaning songs. The girlfriend video was epic. Or it could have been a fan made video, I’m remembering anime and a battle scene for some reason? To the googles I go, and Mathew always seemed so chill and happy. Hope he’s well
CandiceKS@reddit
Unfortunately he's not well. Girlfriend is always one of my top 5 90s songs and it made me so sad to read he had a stroke and needed help paying his medical expenses. I am hoping he makes a strong recovery and can make music again.

Years ago in high school, my girlfriend, at the time, attended a different high school. We both loved listening to him. I would call her school on my break and leave a message for her saying it was Matthew Sweet calling. If course she knew it was me.
Man, that was almost 30 yeas ago.. Time flies.
suprunown@reddit
Girlfriend is one of my top 5 all-time albums, and one of a handful of “perfect” albums (no skips of any song when it comes on).

Same!
PlusUltra_7@reddit
The animated video to Girlfriend was amazing
Far_Anywhere5994@reddit
Anybody see him open for Indigo Girls in 93 or 94? Saw that show at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, both acts fantastic.
Icy_Letterhead2055@reddit
Legend. Donated to fund his medical bills.
Mockin9buddha@reddit
Oh hello yes, man! This and The Men, Church of Logic, Sin, and Love got so much play in my Fiero that summer!
SSquirrel76@reddit
Saw him play twice the same year and then he had a really bad stroke while on tour in Canada. Hasn’t been any public updates since last summer. He has a lot of fantastic music and is great live
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
He just provided an update on the GoFundMe. It’s sad 😢
jpow33@reddit
I saw him in Boulder, Co. some time in the late '90s. It was the last date on a 30 gigs in 30 days tour. They got through the whole show, and decided they weren't done and just jammed for anothe couple of hours. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Amazing
ALLTHEEGGS@reddit
Just saw Abe Partridge at my favorite dive bar last week. He said has been opening for Matthew Sweet in tours off and on over the last few years. Funny this post happened, just been talking about Sweet and Girlfriend with my buddies. Anyway check out Abe Partridge, amazing song writer and great performer.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
I will!
Luridley3000@reddit
He's one of the best singer songwriters to ever do it. Girlfriend is a masterpiece and Altered Beast and 100% Pure Fun aren't far behind. His subsequent work is also totally charming.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Charming is the perfect descriptor
grim_dark_hedgehog@reddit
Geeat album! Girlfriend and Evangeline are both still in various playlists of mine.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
It has been such a pleasure reading everyone’s comments and I have been reading every comment! I needed this warmth and joy in my life! You have inspired me to listen to every MS album. I’m retiring in late May and going on a road trip with my husband. My plan is to listen to all the albums on that trip!
Also, as many of you know, MS suffered a stroke and continues a slow recovery process. I only just learned about it here. His medical bills are ridiculous and there is a GoFundMe. You can find it linked in this thread a bunch of times. He actually provides an update on his health and while tragic you can feel his warmth, optimism, and relentless genius in the words.
I send a link of this thread to the woman who manages the GoFundMe. I hope she shares it with him and that it brings some form of healing.
Thank you everyone for writing! You have warmed my heart and helped restore old forgotten memories that feel happy and exciting as I prepare for my next chapter. I love this sub!
Freeagnt@reddit
That album, Girlfriend, got me back into dating after my wife passed. More specifically, it was the anniversary tour that did it. I wanted to see him in concert, so I bought two tickets, with the plan to take a date. Unfortunately, I wasn't dating anyone at the time, so I had to find someone. When I did finally get a date, Mathew had a stroke and the tour was canceled. But it got me back into the game. I am happy to report, I finally did find my Girlfriend. We've been together for 6 mos now.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)

I always that it was cool that he was a Nebraska boy. We were in high school at the same time.

LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
He’s doing very poorly health-wise. I just learned through this thread that he suffered a stroke in 2024 and the recovery has been a looong process.
LuckyNo13Lady@reddit
That makes me sad. I hope he gets better
Steerider@reddit
One hit wonder, as far as I'm concerned; but damn that one hit is a banger.

His stuff with Susanna Hoffs is excellent as well as his own stuff. Hope he's able to fully recover from his stroke.

He also did the theme song to the best Scooby series, Mystery Incorporated!
TheAKScott@reddit
Was that the one with Sublime doing Hong Kong Phooey? I came across it way later and it blew my mind.
Has there been anything like that since? Serious bands doing covers of shows from their childhood?
IKSLukara@reddit
Yeah, that's it. Also Liz Phair doing the Banana Splits and the Ramones with the Spider-Man song, good stuff!
I don't recall anything similar, but that could be me and my faulty memory.
RightLegDave@reddit
The Violent Femmes covering Eep Op Ork Ah Ah from the Jetsons was wild too
IKSLukara@reddit
There were some bands I didn't really know that did a kick-ass job too, like whoever covered Popeye The Sailor Man.

The_VoZz@reddit
Met him back in '99 while working @ an alt-rock radio station in Columbus Ohio. Was a really nice dude.
CheesecakeEither8220@reddit
Was he from the Columbus area?
The_VoZz@reddit
Good question, not sure. I believe he was on tour promoting his "In Reverse" album at the time & performed in the "big room" of our radio station.
paintingdusk13@reddit
I saw him in Asbury Park for that album and for his second album. I keep a few songs from that first album on my playlists still
abananaberry@reddit
Girlfriend is still in my rotation. That song does everything it needs to do exactly right!
OneUltra@reddit
This was such a great era of music, I love the whole Power Pop sound and he is one of the best.
elcad@reddit
Bought this CD last month for 20 cents. Pretty darn good album.
Mysterious-World-997@reddit
I had “Sick of Myself” on constantly. Love that song!
Workamania@reddit
He was just another name I heard when alt rock fans named dropped. I watched one of his videos recently after the news of his stroke. It was psychotic. My kind of crazy genius is Steve Albini (RIP).
aumiket@reddit
Saw him several times. He was great! So sad that he had a stroke. Seems like he was kind of broke, as they did a GoFundMe if I recall. 😞
BigDarkCloud@reddit
He had a massive stroke.

My husband saw one of the last shows he did before the stroke. Great show and nothing seemed “off” about him. But strokes usually hit outta nowhere like that.

Loved this album
EdenSilver113@reddit
I saw him play at SXSW with Susanna Hoffs. Great show.

ObviousIndependent76@reddit
Grew up in Nebraska, so this question is weird to me. Like asking a kid from Seattle if they remember Cobain.
BraunyTie@reddit
First album I ever bought for myself. Got it in Madison, Wisconsin visiting my sister in college. It was in the tall box made to fit in the cases designed for 33.3 vinyl and it came with the Zoo keychain with the anime girl. I've seen him in concert twice. First time was during the Altered Beast tour. Second was just under two years ago, six months before he had a stroke while touring with Hanson.

LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
I love this so much!
Junior-Group1178@reddit
One of my top 10 favorite albums!
EmotionalVegetable48@reddit
I wore that CD out. The playing was barely good enough to be considered professional, but the songs were awesome and the hooks were all up and down every single track
Reynardine1976@reddit
Did you know that Sweet played all the parts in the studio? He was a one-man band.
EmotionalVegetable48@reddit
Sure did, but I think he brought in a ringer to play the guitar solo for Girlfriend. Maybe not the cleanest take, but a damn good one. Perfectly nailed the spirit of the song too
Junior-Group1178@reddit
He brought in two ringers, Richard Lloyd from Television and Robert Quine from Lou Reed and Richard Hell and the Voidoids. 2 of my favorite guitar players. The record company asked for a wish list of musicians and these were the top 2 Matthew asked for. The playing on this album is excellent. The atonal stuff is very much purposeful.
LASER_Dude_PEW@reddit
I love his stuff. "Sick of Myself" has been on my playlists for years along with others.
Ixliam@reddit
I have this CD somewhere in a box in the garage. I played the crap out of it.
GreasyChalms@reddit
I still play through his song books to this day.
arrrgylesocks@reddit
Girlfriend is one of my ringtones. 😁 We were just talking about Matthew Sweet the other night because some of his other songs popped up when we were listening to my husband’s Spotify playlist in the car. Such a great album.
bear-mom@reddit
Love Matthew Sweet. The Girlfriend video would play on or near Liquid Television. I made a mixed video tape of late night MTV at that time and it was in there. Lost it though. It was awesome.
StrengthFew9197@reddit
I loved this album so much. I saw him open for the indigo girls in Minneapolis when I was like 18. Great show

The ‘Discord and Rhyme’ podcast had an episode about this album this past Fall. Here’s a link to the episode. Tuesday Weld gave the OK to use her photo for the cover but asked that the title be changed. It was going to be something like ‘Nothing Lasts’.

terrybuvm@reddit
This album tracked the rider and fall off my first relationship beautifully. It's why it's one of my top three records ever, but I can't really bring myself to play it. It sits on a shelf in a frame, metaphorically speaking. I love when tracks from it pop up in mixes though.

TaDow-420@reddit
The video was so sick! Everytime is came on MTV I would be so stoked because it is such a cool video. It’s not like today where you can just search up whatever you want to see/hear at a moments notice. Such a treat whenever this video played!

Girlfriend was the greatest "drive way too fast" song. I would time the breaks with certain street hills and turns so I could feel all movie-montagey.

Columbia House sent me the Girlfriend CD in my monthly batch. I had no idea who he was and then I started seeing the video on MTV. He helped me get through some depressing times in the early 90’s when I was in the ARMY. I still reference him to educate my less seasoned coworkers.
SplashiestMonk@reddit

Ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff. Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and 100% Fun were the soundtrack of my heartbreaks through my undergrad years at Virginia Tech. Never did find a woman who loves his music half as much as I do, which is its own kind of breakbreak..

LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
What if all of a sudden Columbia Records came for us?
tacosandEDM@reddit
I was curious what happened to them, this was quite the read….
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_House?wprov=sfti1#
It also referenced CDNow which I had completely forgotten about. I searched my email and found emails about online orders there 1999-2000….blast from the past!
I ordered:
For $17.96:
Papa Vegas : Hello Vertigo (CD) Oleander : February Son (CD)
For $63.76:
P.J. Harvey : 4-Track Demos (CD) Tricky : Angels With Dirty Faces (CD) Squarepusher : Selection Sixteen (CD) (This was in Dec 2000, must have been gifts, I don’t have these CDs)
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
From the Wiki—and this is so GenX and would make Bob Dobbs smile
These Columbia House envelopes would arrive as junk mail to countless homes on a regular basis. One recipient might get one type of offer, but a neighbor might receive a more lucrative offer. Many times, the teenagers of the house intercepted this mail. They were easily suckered in with the idea of getting the albums they wanted all at once and all they had to do was to buy three or four albums within the next two or three years. There were many underage customers who legally could not be bound to this agreement; Columbia House knew these were unenforceable, but they apparently did not care (though eventually this policy did change). Columbia House (and other music clubs) made it extremely easy to defraud them. There were countless cases of customers joining the music club, receiving free albums and never ordering more albums at full price as agreed. Customers would join the club several times under different names with no intention of paying—in extreme cases receiving recordings with a retail value of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
tacosandEDM@reddit
Not only did us GenXers get suckered into this, I noticed Columbia House dates back to the 50s. Reminded me that my mom has mentioned that her dad got records that way….
(Also: I somehow was not aware about Bob Dobbs and that was also a very interesting read on Wikipedia!)

"Girlfriend Radio" is a Spotify go-to for me.
casuallywary@reddit
This record. Holy fucking shit. So radically important to me.
Burnoutboi@reddit
Matthew Sweet was , along with Teenage Fanclub and Big Star, the soundtrack to my nineties. Had a great four album run from Girlfriend to Blue Sky On Mars. Absolutely beautiful harmonies and some timeless songs.
I couldn’t pick a favorite song of his if you paid me. Evangeline from Girlfriend, Life Without You or What Do You Know? from Altered Beast, We’re The Same or Smog Moon from 100% Fun, Behind The Smile or All Over My Head from BSOM. His best of, Time Capsule, also has an absolute banger called So Far.
BatOutOfHello@reddit
Smog Moon is such a gorgeous song. The lyrics are so dark and sad but man, that melody is haunting.
Cake_Donut1301@reddit
I carried his guitar to his tour bus back in the day.
adudeguyman@reddit
How did that happen?
Prestigious_Menu7541@reddit
Incredible album. Great songwriting, and awesome guitar. Turned me on to Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd and their work as well. Just a jewel of perfect power pop.
BatOutOfHello@reddit
Yep. They remain two of my all-time favorite guitar players.
So is Ivan Julian, who played with Matthew on tour often.
bradatlarge@reddit
Girlfriend is still in my favorites playlist in Apple Music.
Jesus Jones. INXS. Stereo MC’s and Happy Mondays too

I knew the guy who did that cover art. His name was actually Art! He passed away a few years ago. RIP 🕊️
OneValkGhost@reddit
OK. So it's a spontaneous thread about love for a indi singer, and not meant to scare me that his health problems have gotten worse. I hope he's able to regain his guitar playing abilities, as well as actual arm mobility because he needs that.
Turns up "Superdeformed."
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Seriously! I want to see him on stage again
ChuckVowel@reddit
Started listening to Matthew Sweet because I loved the anime music video for Girlfriend (back when it was called Japanimation). Went out and bought the CD for $16.99, and later that evening a movie starring Tuesday Weld (the actress on the cover) was showing on AMC. Teenage me thought the universe was trying to tell me something.

One of my favorites! My car was broken into and they stole my car radio & all my CDs. This album was one of the ones they stole, and I was so upset. It’s interesting to think about how many friends I knew who had the radio stolen out of their cars at some point, but now I can’t remember that happening to anyone in decades!
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Remember the removable stereos?
beaushaw@reddit
I thought I was so bad ass walking around a high school football game carrying the faceplate of my car stereo.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
Haha yes!
AKABrokenArrow@reddit
I had a Benzi Box in my ‘86 GTI. I went to the movies one night and put my radio in the trunk so I wouldn’t have to carry it in with me. Someone smashed my window and stole my box of 80 tapes. It was almost my whole collection.
It was then I converted to CDs.
llbellenow@reddit
I taught school in downtown Atlanta, zone 3 for those who know - lol. After my radio was stolen the first time, I got one with a removable face plate. That one got stolen, too! And yes, I had the face plate with me when the rest of it was stolen!! I was so mad - ugh! All that frustration & expense, and it’s not even a thing that seems to happen anymore.
KieranJalucian@reddit

Definitely doing this this week
TheWarDoctor@reddit
Story time.
Back in 2010 I had some extra tickets to a screening of the Lost finale in LA with cast members, etc. Shout out to Jay and Jack Podcast. A friend of mine asked if they could offer them to a client of theirs, who happened to be Matthew. Flew out to LA, friend of mine and I drove to his house in the hills to deliver them.
He invited us in, and got to meet him and his partner (who I believe is the woman in the album art above). Toured his home, got to see his practice room with a bunch of instruments, and various memorabilia.
A few things stood out: 1) they were very much into cats and pottery, so the house was filled with these rather dick shaped cat sculptures, and 2) their art on there walls were these paintings of rather adult looking kids with huge eyes.
He invited us to hang out near the pool, we talk music, Lost, and he goes through a few joints in a medicine bottle. Now, I don't smoke, but I did find it rather odd he never offered. But hey, maybe it was expensive and I would have politely declined anyway.
After a few hours, we needed to head out to get ready for the finale, and he said he would meet us there at the Orpheum. On our way out, his wife gifted us some of those little statues. I had held onto them for quite a while until my toddler had eventually broken them.
As for that night, they never showed. Had folks that would have really enjoyed coming with us, and he never showed.
So yeah, no really thread here just a thing that happened. I heard of his stoke and hope for his recovery.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
I love this story.
GargamelBalls@reddit
The woman on the album cover is actress Tuesday Weld, not Matthew Sweet’s partner…
TheWarDoctor@reddit
Thanks for the clarification! I wasn't 100% on that
Mulchpuppy@reddit
Woman on the cover is Tuesday Weld - picture is from the late 50s, so that's probably wasn't her unless Matty likes 'em on the older side of Sears.
Environmental_Suit49@reddit
Can we talk about Robert Quine on guitar absolutely KILLIN IT!!
Environmental_Suit49@reddit
If you guys wanna be even more amazed, go listen to his work with Lou Reed and then even before that back in the 70s, Television. He is one of my all-time guitar heroes.
Prestigious_Menu7541@reddit
For real. Not only Voidoids, but Richard Lloyd led me to the amazing Television - all time favorite now.
Environmental_Suit49@reddit
Obviously television is completely insanely amazing as well. You should listen to Roberts work with Marianne Faithful as well. It’s fairly classic him and I love it.
wynand1004@reddit
Absolutely - his guitar work was such an integral part of those albums!
FailureFulcrim@reddit
There it is! I was dumbfounded when I learned it wasn't Matthew playing, because they didn't make it very well known. Hard to beat a song that starts with a ripping guitar solo like Girlfriend does.
StevenPechorin@reddit

He suffered a stroke in October 2024 while on tour in Toronto. He is undergoing a long recovery process involving physical and occupational therapy for speech, mobility, and coordination issues that impacted his left side, leaving him temporarily unable to perform. Sad. Love that guy!

The aftereffects are still ongoing for Matthew, and he may never be able to play, or sing again. It really is a tragic thing.
For those interested you can help donate to his ongoing care via GoFundMe.

One of my favorite albums ever. I've seen him multiple times, in Philadelphia, D.C., Dewey Beach, New York. Always in smaller venues, always blew the doors off. "Play it loud" instructions on the album itself.
shadenhoney@reddit
I saw him in Columbia, SC, and it was the loudest show I had ever been to- beating out, among others, Nine Inch Nails (at MSG), Metallica, Guns n Roses, and Van Halen. It was glorious.
stonymessenger@reddit
I saw him first in Philadelphia at the Chestnut Cabaret right after the Girlfriend album came out. My buddy had really only ever been to stadium shows before. We had to move away from the walls due to the feedback. Every show I've seen him play was awesome, and also, at the Dewey Beach show, he stopped the performance to make sure a girl in the audience was ok. On point, every single time. I hope he's able to recover somewhat from the stroke.
redditorrnot@reddit
100% Fun is one of my all time favs. It gives me vibes of Paul McCartney's Ram.
Inside_Waltz1275@reddit
I saw him back in college at a little venue on campus, and it was deafeningly loud. Like, so loud everyone who went had their ears ringing for a week. I think I left a little early because it was just too loud
Equal-Ad-6777@reddit
Saw him in the late 90s at an outdoor venue at a county fair in western MA. Was still so loud I had to walk out. I play drums and 2nd row for an entire Metallica show (indoors) in '93. So was a bit shocked that I had to tap out.

I remember being accused of only liking Girlfriend by a “real” fan.
Fuck that guy. I did like Girlfriend. That was the point.
tmolesky@reddit
This album was great. Underrated guitarist Robert Quine- it sounded very Hendrix-y to me.
Nazz1968@reddit
That’s what drew me in the first time I heard it back in the day. Quine looked exactly like the tax lawyer that he in fact was, but had the most fluid lead playing I’d heard since Hendrix.
Plus, he had a whole history playing with Lou Reed, recording VU concerts in 1969, and being a major player in late 70’s New York No Wave scene. On top of that, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys is his 2nd cousin.
tmolesky@reddit
Yes! To me this album was like a synthesis of Big Star meets Hendrix, which is an unlikely pairing on paper, but ultimately through all that it has its own thing going on.
stonymessenger@reddit

"Girlfriend" is still on my "blowout what's left of my bad hearing" if it comes on the radio list. WXRT in Chicago still refers to him only as Guitar-God-Matthew-Sweet
17krista@reddit
It remains one of my favorite songs of all time.
Ordinary_Camel_3456@reddit
Just had the acoustic version of Sick of Myself pop up from the iTunes library today. Thank you millennium Limewire
wynand1004@reddit
Girlfriend is a classic. I saw him in Tokyo for the 25th anniversary of Girlfriend and he played it through in its entirety.
Altered Beast is my personal favorite. And, if you haven't listened to it yet, check out his most recent album Cat's Paw - it's easily up there with his best work.
LightFlaky2329@reddit (OP)
I definitely will!
pommefille@reddit
I was on VH1 with him. We were at an ‘industry’ Halloween party and they had a camera crew there, he was next to me and said to stay while they interviewed him so I did

Tremendous album, start to finish. Divine Intervention a banger. Saw him live in 2024 for the first time in 30 years, and the band was tight (the drummer from the bangles was his drummer), and the crowd loved him. Sad to hear about his health problems.
Desperate_County_680@reddit
Saw him in KC, February 2024.
Sounded so good.
I love his music dearly. Seen him in concert 5-10 times? Talked to him after shows 3-4 times. Great guy.
He had a massive stroke. Probably will never be the same.
Sick of Myself. Such a great song.

thebigbobowski@reddit
If I had to choose one album as my "desert island" pick, it would potentially be this one. I haven't listened to it in a long while, as I lean toward more current stuff nowadays. But this album holds a special place in my heart from my formative years.

Was originally called “Good friend” throughout, and after he demo’d it a few times people kept telling him “I really like that girlfriend song.” So he layered that into the lyrics and renamed it.

It's crazy when you think of someone as a reasonably successful musician and realize they probably haven't sold many albums in the last twenty years and are basically treading water by touring clubs. I have to remind myself that the vast majority of people born after 1995 don't know and/or don't care about Matthew Sweet.

I recently was cleaning out the glovebox of one of my cars and found the CD. The only CD player we own is in my daughter's car so she inherited the CD and I started to stream the album as I cleaned the rest of the car.

He was going to title the album "Nothing Lasts Forever " or something like that, but the actress on the cover, Tuesday Weld, said she would withdraw her ok to use her photo so they went with Girlfriend instead.
Tuesday Weld was one of the most beautiful actresses of the 1960's

I heard Sick of Myself a few years back, and it became an absolute favorite song of mine. I was aware of Matthew Sweet from when he was in The Thorns, but didn't really know his stuff until recently.
liltooclinical@reddit
I loved this song but then I went and listened to his albums and they were all kinda whiny and bland.
I thought his theme song for "Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated" was excellent.
CawlinAlcarz@reddit
I really only was familiar with "Girlfriend," but I remember it well and how the sound was something like a cross between the best of the 80s with the shade of the 90s new sound. I loved it. I never really followed Sweet, and I don't really know any of his other songs off the top of my head.
I hope his recovery from his stroke goes well.
liltooclinical@reddit

If you ever have the chance to see the play Girlfriend, which uses music from that album, definitely go. It’s a wonderful play, and the music fits perfectly
Hoosier100s@reddit
Wife and I still listen to a fair bit of his catalogue regularly. We were fortunate to attend one of his last shows before the stroke. His later stuff is all quite listenable, but that run of albums in the ‘90s was top tier.

How could I forget? I'd just moved to Lincoln, NE for college when Girlfriend dropped. For a few months, that was the only thing rivaling Nebraska football in the town pop-culture.

Hopefully Sweet is doing alright after his stroke (IIRC) a couple years ago.
I have a few of his albums on CD, put many of those songs (particularly from what is considered his classic trilogy - Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and 100% Fun) on my iPod Touch a number of years ago, and listen to them as part of my few thousand songs playlist regularly. I’ve also seen him live I think three times, once on the 100% Fun tour in 1995 and twice in the last 10 years prior to his stroke.
