Riverbank Finds From the 80’s. Coke/Pepsi/Mountain Dew Glass Bottles

Grew up along the Susquehanna River in central NY. Was the best place a boy could grow up. Also was an old gravel pit extremely close too with large pond with all sorts of stuff to explore and fish.
Out of the many many different activities we did on days from building BMX trails, sports, bike racing, fishing and so much more was walking up and down the banks finding stuff. The river from rising from floods and morons littering would cause all sorts of stuff to collect along the banks. One was bottles like these. We used glass coke bottles as trophies after bike races.
Glass bottles seemed so cool when younger. And they still kinda are. I’ve never really cleaned them out properly. They didn’t spend 75 years in dirt or anything so the glass isn’t ruined. Only a few I can actually tell what date they are. A few have 2 number code on bottom. Like one says 83. Most I am not sure when they’re from. Guess they are all from 60’s to early 80’s.
We should go back to glass btw. Plastic is awful. All are old enough they all say “No Refill”. If anyone knows what the symbols on bottom mean or know the dates somehow lemme know. I really like the two Mountain Dew green ones.

Those glass Mt Dew bottles were no joke. I've seen one shrug off a .22 short.

The glass bottles from back then are least two times as thick as ones from now. We should 100% for back to glass for soda and many other things

Oh man, that was the good stuff. Mountain Dew in the late 70’s and early 80’s was my crack. It took me to the late 90’s to break the habit.

I had the same problem from about 1996-1998. I drank a lot of it. Then realized how insanely unhealthy it is. The worst type of empty calories. There’s just no point to it. It destroys people’s teeth. It makes you gain weight (I was still a teen so didn’t matter really then) and is just tons and tons of sugar. Soda is so bad for you. I just don’t drink it. Some things ifs better to just not bother.

Ah, the amount of esophageal and stomach lining I’ve sacrificed on the altar of Mountain Dew.

We were a Mountain Dew household also, but it was a treat, and you wouldn’t have drunk more than one at a time. You might’ve had to split a bottle with your sibling, lol.

We were a Shasta/Cragmont cheapy house, and rarely bought soda. But with vending machines available in high school… open season!

This is why the Slurm episode of Futurama was so on point lol
captain_ohagen@reddit
yeah, but peeling off those thin styrofoam labels was so satisfying
FloppyFerrett1@reddit
The embossed glass.is wonderful! I've never seen an embossed Pepsi bottle like that before!
carolinagirl843@reddit
Peeling the styrofoam label off in a thin strip was the most satisfying thing
xt0rt@reddit
Oh man I want to tear the Styrofoam label off of that bottle so bad.

With Styrofoam labels, sweet

Many Saturdays were spent at a liquor store across the street from where we lived. I'd buy a glass bottle of soda and a candy bar. Whatever money I had left went to Pac-Man.

We would do chores or what we called “jobs” around the neighborhood to save up to go to a little store in our neighborhood to buy a drink and a snack. We went door to door asking if they had something for us to do. We did that a lot and from a young age up until like 13 or 14. I never see kids doing that anymore. Might not be the safest thing in many people’s eyes. Asking adults what can we do for money. Usually was like 75 cents to make 1.25 an hour.

We recently had some kids knock on our door and ask if there was any work they could do for us. It's still a thing.

Good to hear. I thought maybe it faded away over time

I made out like a bandit taking out cans, cutting grass, washing cars, watering lawns, whatever paid. Made up for all the shit I had to do at home for free.

I like that Mt dew bottle with the thin Styrofoam label still intact.
fuckyoulahey@reddit
Actually incredible that label is mostly intact...
BuckyGoldman@reddit
I did really like the short fat 16oz bottles, and slowly tearing off the foam lables.
hemppy420@reddit
Haha if I found one I would not tear it off......but it would take all of my effort to not tear it off.
I want to tear it off just looking at the picture

That actually was 3/4 full still when I found it. Maybe 10-15 years later after being in hot closets or who knows where we bet a friend he wouldn’t take a large gulp of it. He did. Sugar water sitting exposed to air for that long. Surprised he lived. I thought it was still like half full but getting them out realized I must’ve dumped it for whatever reason.
