In the World Cup do you cheer for each others teams?

In latam, generally we cheer for each others teams in the World Cup if we’re not playing. I’m from Mexico and we always will cheer for Colombia or Peru or other latam country if they’re playing a European or even the US haha.
Is it similar for Balkans?

From the people around my family, people have preferences for specific players, so they cheer the team their favorite player is in.
My family for example cheered for Argentina, because Messi deserved a World Cup - we didn't cheer for a European team, just because it's European. In other cases, we cheer for our neighbours.
ThingCandid9553@reddit
I only cheer for the ones that don’t have non- European players.
Stverghame@reddit
I generally don't (exceptions are Greece and Romania)
As for some others, I smirk when they lose heheh

During the 2022 World cup I was cheering for Serbia
Now I am going to cheer for Bosnia
Why? Well, I am constantly exposed to this ex-yu culture and we also speak kinda the same language so it feels like the closest to a second favorite national team that I could think of.

I hope Bosnia & Hercegovina and Croatia do well, I will watch their matches. I will also watch Senegal, Paraguay, Uruguay. But I do not "cheer" for them as a supporter.
For me, the world cup and fifa is a disgusting organization. It's legalized mafioso.
No_Apartment_1776@reddit
I cheer only for African countries

Well I grew up in Germany so I cheer on Germany but I am always happy when other Balkan nations are doing well (except for Serbia lol) I hope Bosnia and Croatia make it far!!

You will never find a Scotsman cheering for England....!
nedenatmivararkamda@reddit
As a Turk, I will be cheering Bosnia definitely, but I don't think most Balkans will be supporting their Balkan neighbors. Apart from this sub
Natural_Scholar_1502@reddit
I was rooting for Turkey in 2002. I put the World Cup games on in the bar I was working at, and the Americans didn’t want to watch.

Romanian here. Usually I cheer for Portugal, Spain, maybe Italy.
Suspicious-Lake-6259@reddit
I cheer for any “small” team that turns some heads. Almost every Euro and World cup has a small country that surprises everyone. I also have a soft spot for Japan, idk why.

Im from bosnia and cheer for croatia, bosnia, and serbia
Paceronikus@reddit
Im from Serbia and I do cheer for my neighbohrs. Mainly Croatia, Greece, Romania etc... But I will also do it for Bosnia this time around. Can't say im in majority here but let everyone with hate in their harts in all the Balkans live in misery for the rest of their lifes if they want to, I wont.

True-Blacksmith4235@reddit

gggoce@reddit
yes, in macedonian we call them наши
ahmet-chromedgeic@reddit
No, actually quite the opposite, I get salty seeing neighbors celebrating when we are shit. If we're good then I don't care.
PurpleMclaren@reddit
You guys have teams in the world cup?
Mestintrela@reddit
I only cheer for the underdog unless it is a country I dislike i.e US in the next World Cup.
raceregos@reddit
I support Balkan teams against anyone.
Ok_Rise_4543@reddit
Yeah we do it too.
BGD_TDOT@reddit
I try to cheer on our neighbors but then some shit goes down and I end regretting it. For example the Croatian players deciding to celebrate with Thompson who is a blatant Ustasha or during Bosnia games seeing Sanzdak separatist flags in the stands. Trying not to be a hypocrite, I'm sure there are Croats & Bosniaks who would cheer for Serbia on but have also seen the fans chant/do something they don't like.
Honestly I think the main problem is that in Ex-Yugoslavia soccer is most intensely followed by people with little education and highly nationalistic people. With basketball & waterpolo everyone seems to get along and that includes the fans.
nurgleondeez@reddit
I will cheer for Bosnia and Turkey,I don't care about what others around me think.
Yes,both of them beating us prevented Romania from participating, but that doesn't matter anymore. They were better this time and I'll be damned if I cheer for anyone else before I cheer for my fellow balkans

Not really, I don't really hate any Balkan country but there are teams with better chance and/or more fun brand of football to root for.
For Turkey specifically that root is actually stronger with Central Asian countries, according to my Kazakh superior when I went to Almaty for an internship Turkey and Turkish clubs were their default go-to team for EUROs or Champions League. For that reason I know Turkey and Uzbekistan will back each other up this World Cup.
gesti2002@reddit
Expect for Serbia generally I support other teams especially if they play attracting football
Ha55aN1337@reddit
I root for Slovenia, if they are not qualified I root for other balkan nations. If other balkan nations play other teams than Slovenia, I also root for them.
So… yes haha.
yowspur@reddit
Yes. Except for Serbia. Unless they are playing England. Or any South American country. Or North American. Or Israel.
