Why are many Brits so obsessed with getting as drunk as possible?

How come everytime Brits talk about having a beer in a pub it’s always about getting as drunk as possible? As a German this is really odd to me
Iam a casual drinker so the whole idea of getting completely shitfaced just seems odd and I grew up in a very rural part of Germany
I feel like Brit’s treat alcohol more like a challenge then smth to enjoy on a nice day

In my experience Germans totally outclass Brits when it comes to drinking, and with much stronger beers too....

Proper English beer is often flat and served in larger amounts; meaning more is usually drank.

You realise a German stein is basically two pints, right?
Ge-o@reddit
You realise it will be mostly tourists ordering those, right?
Whereas if you ask for a drank in England and don't specify; you will get a pint. You will not get a stein in most of Germany outside of something like Oktoberfest.

Nah plenty of locals will have a maß too, especially in Bavaria, it's not a thing that's mostly for tourists.
And a half litre (i.e. about a pint) is probably the standard for draft, and most bottles are the same as ours though with a bit more variety.
Stats-wise, Germans drink about the same as us, a little bit more than we do, and binge plenty as well. It's really not that different.

I didn't say only tourists, and I didn't say in all of Germany. A stein is still not the standard as is a pint

I live in Barcelona and the German drinkers are next level!

It's not true, as a 1 second search shows, but as this is a thread created to try and start a circlejerk, why would anybody care?

I think there's some selection bias going on here. Stories aren't always representative.
Brits, on average, drink about the same as Germans, actually a little less. (Metrics summarised here)
Binge drinking is also a thing in Germany and in the UK. Because they take different timeframea, these can't be directly.compared, but ~30% of Germans binge drinking once a month doesn't seem to indicate massively less binging than the UKs 11% a week.

Sounds like you're hanging out with the wrong people. If anything the average person is pretty judgemental about drinking in my experience.

I drank to inevitably get drunk and chat shit. It was the best of times and the worst of times but I wouldn’t change it. Plus I was in the military and that’s 90% of the gig.
Busy-Shallot-5563@reddit
I’m not, I don’t even drink 😂

People will say life is miserable. But instead of trying to make it better they'll make it more miserable
Appropriate_Tell5088@reddit
That assumes they didn’t try. A lot of people did, nothing moved and after a point it just feels like there’s no way out. Can’t really blame them, shit’s layered.
Commercial_Nature_28@reddit
Brits are a socially shy people and we spend a lot of our lives keeping that front up. So when we get the chance, we really feel the need to let lose. It's why brits are also wild drunks. Because of our reserved culture, it's the only time we feel comfortable just saying what we truly think and such. Not healthy at all but it is the culture
Ge-o@reddit
I don't think this it. Many a troublesome drunk is not a shy person.
SadBird8412@reddit
Life’s shit. Gotta take your mind off it somehow.

I’m pals with quite a few Germans who also enjoy it.

Because it’s a miserable shithole and people will do anything to try and forget that.
According_Sundae_917@reddit
But there are far worse countries on earth that don’t have that culture
johnmarksmanlovesyou@reddit
Were a nation of low-key alcoholics
Appropriate_Tell5088@reddit
I think that’s just people in general with any substance.
Ge-o@reddit
I just think they are the stories you are more likely to hear about... Depending on who you are talking to. Perhaps the story of a quiet pint nursed for an hour in the beer garden or over a game of pool is not mentioned.
ScotchTimelord@reddit
You try living here, it's a shithole
MJ-Franklin@reddit
Life's shit, we do what we have to do to get through the day. Although I'm sober now... but yeah generally the objective is drink until you forget why you started drinking in the first place.
