We joke about our Gregorian Chant and Swing phases, but always forget how popular Tony Bennett suddenly was at the height of grunge.

Wow. I just remembered I was in the Swing Dance club briefly in high school.

Freshman year of college for me!

Sorry to hear about your prolonged virginity.
archos1gnis@reddit
This made me laugh out loud!

I don’t remember Tony’s comeback—but I saw Gregorian about a week ago and they still sent me in a trance
MSTRFNCY@reddit
Unrelated to this thread, but the menzingers had a great show in Greensboro a few weeks back. I'd recommend you go back in time and see them also.
Ms_ChiChi_Elegante@reddit
Aww man, they were here on the 3rd
HotTubSexVirgin22@reddit
You went to at least 3 of these, right?
Sinistas@reddit
Their metal album was pretty rad.
Karreck@reddit
Excellent choice in theater.
Ms_ChiChi_Elegante@reddit
Ya they didn’t have the balcony seats open and they ended up having a meet and greet!
Oaken_beard@reddit (OP)
It was around ‘93 & ‘94. The image I posted is from his MTV unplugged concert, the same year as Nirvana.
Ms_ChiChi_Elegante@reddit
Maybe cuz my folks didn’t listen to him I didn’t notice
Ms_ChiChi_Elegante@reddit
At that time they mainly listened to Spanish music
BarelyThere78@reddit
Back in '90s, I picked up a bunch of "MTV Unplugged" albums from Columbia House and Tony's was in the mix. I was hook on his work and crooners in general, after that.
debaser64@reddit
Sanatra too (remember Duets?). He was riding the nostalgia wave fueled by our grandparents. In 15ish years we will see a surge in Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam sales and REM reuniting as our turn in the cycle comes around!
SumpCrab@reddit
Yep, Sinatra and Elvis were everywhere in the early 90s. You couldn't swing a cat without hitting an impersonator of one of those two at the time.
ShibaInuDoggo@reddit
I see you Tony Bennett and raise you a Daler Mehndi.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
Yeah this was this huge bangra craze in the y2k era.
PhoneJazz@reddit
This went viral in my college dorm block lol
Legitimate_Bird_5712@reddit
Those were magical times.

Fuck yes!

First time I heard that song was a newgrounds video where some guy who's friends dad was a math teacher who was obsessed with math, photoshopped the dad/teacher's face onto an animated guy prancing around a disney-ish field/meadow with floating equations all over the sky. Didn't even know this was a real song until years later. I was probably 16 at the time lol.

Everyone always forgets about Zamfir: Master of the Pan Flute
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
There used to be so many jokes using Zamfir or "the magic of the panflute" back the day.
cardboardbelts@reddit
They made a joke about him in Sports Night back in the day
Traditional_Cat_60@reddit
A fellow fan of Sports Night!??! There are dozens of us!
PilotC150@reddit
I can't hear the name "Zamfir" without thinking of Sports Night. Great episode, too. Maybe they shouldn't have rewired the board without telling Jeremy.
PhoneJazz@reddit
I only remember Zamfir for being name-checked in Weird Al’s Billy Ray Cyrus sendup “Achy Breaky Song”.
Murphy_Dropkick410@reddit
And thus my point was made LOL
hey_suburbia@reddit
I saw Tony Bennett perform live while in the audience of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien show. Maybe around 2002.
noonesaidityet@reddit
So was Sinatra. That Duets album hit in a weird spot. Felt like it was everywhere.
Lopsided_Toe3452@reddit
Tony Bennett is a national treasure.
tampapunklegend@reddit
I actually completely forgot about the random Tony Bennett popularity in the 90s. That decade was weird.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
Paul Anka has a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I'm Catholic, I still listen to Gregorian Chant.
tacosandtheology@reddit
For real. I'm a Catholic metalhead and nothing hits as hard as a chanted Dies Irae.
StillhasaWiiU@reddit
Was this before, or after Yanii got big?
overly_curious_cat@reddit
Still love Yanni ! It's my favorite put it on and get shit done around the house musician.
subsonicmonkey@reddit
I worked at Wherehouse Records in 1997 and operated the equivalent of the Ticketmaster system. They used to do the big on-sales at 10 AM on Sundays.
We were unprepared for the line down the block for the day that Yanni tour tickets went on-sale.
And it was the worst most entitled wealthy middle-aged white people.
Crazy day.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
I remember seeing Tony Bennett on a sitcom (Just Shoot Me?) and I fell in love with The Crooners.
My dad hated it. “Why are you listening to music my parents listened to?” Because it’s awesome?
The_Abjectator@reddit
Those crooners came in hard in the '90s and early '00s.
