What would you do with someone else's chocolate?

Just got home from a long weekend away for Easter to discover a big box of Hotel Chocolat chocolates, addressed to the previous owner. I bought this house over 6 years ago, from a couple who were moving to the other end of the country (so it's not like I could just drop it round). I can see from my doorbell camera it was actually delivered on Thursday, so whoever ordered it will likely be wondering where it's got to by now. What would you all do with the box?
eastkent@reddit
I see you've emailed them. I hope you told them you may well have licked every chocolate?
illbepedro@reddit (OP)
I figured that went without saying. I'm only human
eastkent@reddit
Good, well done.
Funky_monkey2026@reddit
What would I do with the box? Put it in the recycling bin right after I've demolished all the choccies!
Downtown-Ad9409@reddit
Why are you even asking when there’s nothing else to do with them? Flexing your free choccie on us all like that
illbepedro@reddit (OP)
Really just here for some validation that eating them won't make me a bad person
DownrightDrewski@reddit
Might make you a fatter person...
Source, part of the reason I'm fat is too much delicious chocolate and too little self control.
eastkent@reddit
I see little point in denying yourself nice things purposely. There is so much unhappiness in the world, why be part of it if you don't need to?
DownrightDrewski@reddit
I'm with you, but at the same time moderation is also a good thing. I'm currently aiming to be less fat so I'm eating less, but, I still enjoy some chocolate (I'm also 3st down, with another 5 or so to go).
eastkent@reddit
Well done you! Dieting is quite tedious but I've always said you can eat whatever you want, as long as your calorie count stays within the weight loss limit most of the time.
AromaticVacation3077@reddit
It won't make you a good person.
OdinForce22@reddit
What's wrong with being a bit naughty from time to time?
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
just keep them to one side, I bet someone contacts you. These big boxes of HC are not cheap. They will discover they have been sent to your address. Or you could tell HC they are not for you, they might give you them
smellyfeet25@reddit
Eat it . obviously
Bellatrixforqueen@reddit
Eat it
WeeklyPermission239@reddit
Boring answer - probably call Hotel Chocolat and tell them about the mistake to help the intended owners get their refund/redelivery, all the while hoping they'd say "ok cool just eat them bro". (I'm autistic and am thus compelled/cursed to always follow the rules)
The answer you want - eat them
illbepedro@reddit (OP)
I've messaged Hotel Chocolat customer service. Keeping my fingers crossed they tell me to eat them!
Galaxy135@reddit
I had this once with a box of wine. The company told me to keep it. They were very happy (think they only ever dealt with complaints on that line), as was I! You’ve done the right thing, there’s no way they’ll take back food
PennyBunPudding@reddit
They will almost certainly let you eat them. As they can't take them back from a random home.
blue_rizla@reddit
Get that shit down your face, obviously
What_Reality_@reddit
In this situation, I’d eat them and not even remotely look back. If anyone asks, no idea what you’re talking about 🤷♂️
Sea-Still5427@reddit
I'd let Hotel Chocolat know. They'll probably tell you to keep or chuck them due to passage of time.
Hancri84@reddit
Did you right this with a full mouth of Chocolate if not you failed.
ukbakeslotsofcakes@reddit
If you are feeling really guilty, post them to me, I’ll take on your guilt 😋
Adorable_Orange_195@reddit
I once didn’t get the chocolates they sent & contacted them after the expected delivery date had gone by and they gave me a refund in form of a credit for their store. The original choccies then turned up and they said keep them and gave me another £2.50 credit for the ‘inconvenience’ so I got a very nice chocolate selection with the credit they gave me for the original chocs being 3 days late. Has made me a loyal customer who will always return to their chocs when I have the money to spare on some nice chocs though, so it was a win for both of us in the end.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Eat it.
Oilfreeeggs@reddit
Open up your mouth and feed it
worldworn@reddit
Try to contact the company who sent it to see if they have a process to come get it. (Probably not for food.)
If not, keep hold of it for a couple of months to see if they come and claim it.
It's unlikely, but if I had something delivered to an old address, I might ask someone I knew who was still nearby, to swing by.
Legally it's not yours to keep (or eat), and you need to keep hold of it and keep it safe, for a reasonable amount of time. With food, what's reasonable is probably a lot shorter than other items.
AromaticVacation3077@reddit
It's likely to be a gift from someone. If the previous owners have a Hotel Chocolat account attached to their old address, it's unlikely this is their first order in 6 years. If they ordered it more recently, they wouldn't have sent it to their old address. Open it and see if there's a card inside with the senders name. Then get in touch with Hotel Chocolat and ask them. It's not nice to think that someone sent them a nice gift for Easter and may never know they never received it. If all goes well you may get to eat the chocolates anyway.
Claire4Win@reddit
I would wait on them for a week or so.
If they don't knock or something about them, just eat them.
After that, just say you threw them out if they ask
illbepedro@reddit (OP)
I'm in Kent and they moved to North Wales so it would be some way to come knocking!
Claire4Win@reddit
I would eat them then. Unless it is a limited edition chocolate, it would be too much of a hassle for them
when_music_hits@reddit
Pass it on to someone else
PinkandTwinkly@reddit
Leave it boxed and pack away for a month or two in case anyone chases..
I wouldn't be chasing to return it and I doubt HC will care as they've delivered to where the order was placed (they'd not pay for returns)
Neddlings55@reddit
Did the previous owners order them, or someone ordered them as a gift?
illbepedro@reddit (OP)
I haven't opened the packaging so not sure!
Neddlings55@reddit
If they are from a friend then they arent good ones if they dont know the previous owner moved years ago. Id 100% eat them in that case.
Id probably eat them in both cases tbh. Or regift.
dlt-cntrl@reddit
I'm not one to rain on anyone's parade, but if you open the packing note you should find a phone number for the sender. I've had this happen to me twice (not chocolate though) and called the sender who arranged for the delivery driver to collect it and take it to where it's supposed to go.
If there's no way to find out where the recipient is, they'll probably tell you to keep it.
Go with your conscience is my advice lol!
lilidragonfly@reddit
If I had a forwarding address, or senders address I'd post them on. Otherwise I'd wait and if a few months passed I'd gift then to someone.
InfectedEllie@reddit
Eat it. It’s supposed to be 22c tomorrow, can’t let that chocolate melt.
spinningdice@reddit
For chocolate, I'd give it a week to see if anyone comes by to collect. I doubt they'll travel up from the other end of the county for chocolates...
Yorkshirerose2010@reddit
Porch pirates took it didn’t they
KingPing43@reddit
What a dumb question

Go full Augustus Gloop on their ass

Boof them.
GraphicDesignerSam@reddit
What choccies? You didn’t sign for them 😉
good_as_golden@reddit
If it has come from Hotel Chocolat direct, I'd email them and hope that they'd say eat them 😂
Left-Plant7175@reddit
I’d probably give it a day or two in case they come looking for it… if not, fair game :)
wildflower12345678@reddit
Eat em.
TheBristolBulk@reddit
Sorry, what chocolate?
Coconutpieplates@reddit
Eat it. No chance I'm forwarding some chocolates 😆
