It's not that wild actually. It always works well to counter a fatty ingredient with an acidic one. It could've been a lemon mayonnaise or some capers as well!

There I only know slowak version with beans etc.
btw next time try gooseberry (-sauce) with the mackerel. Incidentally the french call the gooseberry groseillier a maquereau (mackerel currant) for that reason.
