raleel@reddit
No, and definitely not at 1500. EMTB is generally at least twice that
stupid_page@reddit (OP)
yep.
ConfidentSinger6488@reddit
Build one yourself, i made a 3kw with throttle which is only 46 pounds, and trust me its a monster on trails Budget did reach the higher end of 2.5k tho, but lmk if you need a guide or sum (no i DIDN'T use cyc or bonnel, custom cyclone kit, its not as hard as it seems i put it together without a vid) Now 2.5k was with my full suspension bike, if you already have one it might be like 1.5k

throttle is nonsense in e-BIKES
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
Pedal assists are dangerous. Adjust your footing at a stop light and they can throw you into traffic.
PAS can also cause runaways if there is too much friction in the drive train.
Throttle is the safest option, power when you want it and none when you don't.
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
This statement leads me to believe. you have never ridden an E-Bike.
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
You'd be sorely mistaken.
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
So how many times have you sprung into traffic when adjusting your pedal position?
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
Once, then I started cutting my PAS.
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
I think all class 2 and sadly maybe all E-Bikes are going to get banned or heavily regulated because a very visible minority do ride like dickheads. New Jersey is just the beginning.
I just bought a class 3 mostly to make sure I had one before regulators started getting involved.
I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. It feels like cheating. I won’t pass another rider who’s earning their pace with the motor on. If I can’t pass them with my own power I don’t deserve to pass them at all.
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
I have an aftermarket controller. When it turns on it defaults to 20mph and 750w so it's street legal, but I can change it to a more powerful mode when I'm offroading or I'm on private property.
If I want to pedal I'll take my pedal bike, which isnt hard to take past 20mph when you're not lugging around all the extra metal.
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
My class 3 is under 30 lbs. I’m a bit of a diesel so pulling 20 plus on flats is easy enough. I like shutting off the motor to pass class 2s and regular riders and then I’ll fire it back up after I am well clear of them. If I’m in a hurry and around roadies, i plan to offer to motor pace them and give them a nice draft. I’m sure that will come up at some point. I can’t live with buzzing a fellow rider because I have extra money for an E-Bike.
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
I've seen roadies buzz people like assholes without motors, it's really more about the rider.
That's what's up, that's pretty light. What's your peak wattage? Are you running a 48v?
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
It’s a fairly small battery and at wheel watts max at 250. It will double my output in eco mode so if I put down 250 it will match. Putting down 4-500 for an hour makes me feel like Tadej. Range is 70 miles if you take it easy. I did 40 last night mostly on eco or off and had half battery left.
I rode it full boost to run some errands and it would hit the speed limiter with not a ton of input from me. The battery will only last about 20 miles in that mode.
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
Yea, speed limiters suck. That's not too bad, what motor are you running? bafeng?
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
It’s an in house motor from Giant. Supposedly Yamaha makes it.
The bike is a Defy E+. I bought it because of a very good deal used. On flats with the motor off it feels like any road bike. You do notice the extra ten climbing for sure.
I’m not sure yet if I am going to keep it.
Bobby_Strong556@reddit
That's what's up. My pedal bike is an old 2013 Giant Escape that I tossed new wheels on, I was thinking about upgrading the rear gear set to something more modern and dropping a ring off the front for a 2x10 setup. For ebikes, lately I've been eyeing the P-51 Bullet, but I'm probably going to toss a bac855 on it, maybe a 60v too. It's actually surprisingly easy to pedal too, although that's beside the point.
ConfidentChemistry83@reddit
They have riden bad cadence sensor ebikes...
Taiyoryu@reddit
Maybe if it's cadence sensor which is just a fancy on/off switch. A torque sensor will not engage the motor if there isn't enough force applied to the pedal. You can't accidentally turn it on.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
You are right that cadence sensors are the ones prone to do this.
But his point remains valid. For all the consternation over throttles, cadence sensors can pose similar hazards, maybe even worse in some situations like this.
stormdelta@reddit
Class 2 ebikes are legal in the US, but they usually aren't eMTBs.
echocall2@reddit
Class 2 usually aren’t allowed on trails, that’s why they don’t get a throttle.
specialsymbol@reddit
You will not get the pictured bike for 1.5k
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
There are a number of throttled mid-drive ebikes. It is less common than on hub drives. Examples include Aventon Aventure M, Aventon Level 4 ADV, Velotric Discover M, Priority Current Plus.
scannellsean@reddit
Velotric Summit 2
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
The Summit is a hub drive. If it has a hub drive, it's really not an eMTB. I have the Summit 1. And while it's a great bike for mixed riding, it's no match for an actual mid-drive eMTB.
Taiyoryu@reddit
Has a hard tail and is not marketed as a mountain bike. Sure you can take it off-road, but it's not optimized for MTB since it's trying to be multi-terrain.
stupid_page@reddit (OP)
ok
paddypatspub@reddit
For a higher price bonnell bikes have a throttle
Worried_Document8668@reddit
that's because they are disguised mopeds that nobody wants to see on trail.
plus way too heavy
mack-y0@reddit
literally all e-bikes are heavy..
toopla251@reddit
Not 75 lbs heavy
Neat_Clothes_248@reddit
Aventon ramblas has an optional throttle you can ask for
Taiyoryu@reddit
Sourced from their technical specifications
Neat_Clothes_248@reddit
Okay good catch it's the aventure m and level 4 mid drive they have optional throttle. I thought it was all aventon mid drive bikes had optional throttle
stupid_page@reddit (OP)
thx
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
I surely hope not. People riding E-bikes with throttles are doing everything they can to get all E-bikes banned from our streets. If we unleash them on our trails it spells doom for the technology.
alvl5abra@reddit
The most e mtbs have a middle motor and hence no throttle. It doesn't make sense to have much weight in the back wheel if you want to ride offload. You might want to buy an e motocross.
stormdelta@reddit
Nothing stops a mid-drive from having a throttle, it's just less common on non-DIY setups.
That said, throttle is more for transportation applications, they're less common on eMTBs because for trail-riding it's not important + many trails explicitly forbid them which would make selling such bikes difficult.
Worried_Document8668@reddit
not as far as i know. I mean there aren't even any e-mtb at that pricepoint really. mid drives don't really come in that pricerange and hubdrives make zero sense on mtb.
