What’s something small that instantly makes your day better in the UK?
Posted by Ambitious-Twist2512@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 163 comments
I’ve noticed it’s never the big things that stick, it’s the random little moments. Someone thanking the bus driver, a stranger holding the door, finding a tenner in an old coat, or getting a bit of unexpected sunshine after days of grey.
Curious what those small, oddly specific things are for everyone else.
Any_Preference_4147@reddit
My next door neighbour is in his late 90s and his granddaughter visits with her 4 year old once a week. When my neighbour opens his door I hear a tiny little voice say "hello gramps, it's me" and then I hear a very croaky, very old voice say "hello my love, I've got a biscuit for you in the cupboard."
It's a terrace house so I hear this interaction every now and then. Makes my day every time.
Choice-Demand-3884@reddit
Fabulous. I hope somebody has written down his life story. The changes he must have seen.
Any_Preference_4147@reddit
He's lovely. He was born in the house!
20127010603170562316@reddit
I was low key annoyed when my dad & uncles decided to sell my Grandad's house that two of them were born in.
I get that may have held memories and such, but it would have been a better decision to rent it out rather than immediate cash. It's more than doubled in value since they sold it.
Choice-Demand-3884@reddit
Wow! The memories he must have.
Our (now sadly deceased) neighbour when we lived in London had been in her house since the mid-30s. She has some great stories, especially of the Blitz.
Awayebam@reddit
Your neighbour has made my day too!

Drivers letting me cross the road as a pedestrian even when they have right of way. Happens more often when it's late, bad weather or I'm carrying shopping bags. Clearly kindness. It's such a small thing but it's so nice to me. I give a wave back as thanks and I try to return it to others when I can.
AussieHxC@reddit
Not for a couple of years. Drivers are supposed to stop for pedestrians if safe to do so.
ImitationDemiGod@reddit
Do you have a a link for that? Because I don't think that's true at all.
AussieHxC@reddit

GothicGamer2012@reddit
I'm researching driving laws as I want to take my test at some point, to that end I have the theory test app by the government off the play store. Since it specifies pedestrians have priority while in the process of crossing it's likely a suggestion to stop and allow them to cross when safe if they haven't started yet rather than a legal requirement to do so. Meaning pedestrians only have right of way while already crossing rather than waiting to cross. That's how I interpret this situation.
ImitationDemiGod@reddit
Ok, nowhere there does it say that cars have to stop for pedestrians outside of zebra crossings and the other specific examples given.
CompetitionNo3466@reddit
Yeah when they don’t have to stop but give you th space is class

Mine do this, and will yell for me until I yell back (like a feline version of “Marco? Polo!”) and as soon as they hear which room I’m in they come running to me for cuddles and fussing. I am their human. It melts my heart. ♥️

Weird thing I like is complimenting other women. Some try to compliment me back but honestly my favourite part is watching their faces light up- and if I'm complimenting your outfit its because it looks amazing! I love seeing strangers have a little bit of joy to their day.
A woman did this once to me years ago and it made me feel so good I'm determined to keep it up!
Flowers in general make me smile, so does light on the sea through the clouds and canopies of green leaves in summer (one road near me all the trees lean in like that.) I also like urban areas- little shops crammed in, people all around doing their thing, tall buildings next to old buildings next to shops for every culture the city has. It makes me happy just to be around people.
I'm an introvert, so I think by osmosis just being around people helps me feel social.
Loud-Refrigerator675@reddit
Why not men? Dont we have feelings?
Trash_Panda_Leaves@reddit
I knew this would happen! Originally I was going to say some men I feel safe with I compliment too. I also lamented how I can't walk through the parks in my city due to multiple men trying to SA me, so there's that too.
How do you compliment other men?
Justboy__@reddit
Don’t worry, you don’t have to justify it. There’s always one.

I didn't grow up getting the bus much, so I didn't know about thanking the driver.
At art college after I left school I had a girl-crush on this gorgeous girl who looked like The Bangles guitar player - she was the first person I saw say "cheers" as she got off the bus and I thought she was so so cool for it and now I always do, and the little thing that makes me happy is when they acknowledge it. They don't usually but it's a nice little moment. A little candlelight of hope in a dark world.

It happens less now he's a senior - he's more of a polite bum sniff kinda guy now - but there's no purer pleasure than watching two well matched dogs running around together and going for a bit of a wrestle.

I was walking my dog yesterday and listening to some music, she stopped to sniff a flower patch and I looked around and the sky was so blue and clear, not a cloud in sight. There was a plane making a trail in the sky and a bird of prey circling a field across the way. The flowers were tricolour tulips and they were beautiful, my dog looked up at me too and I was full of love for her. Just taking the time to stop and enjoy the nature around me really made my day.

rbar174@reddit
Absolutely love this. Walks with my funny boy have got a lot shorter in the last year or so as he is getting older, but he's noticeably happier when the sun is out - and so am I. In this week's sunshine I'm enjoying the feeling of sunchine, noticing flowers and new growth on trees and shrubs, whilst he's sniffing happily, looking back at me before continuing on his skippy walk.
swapacoinforafish@reddit
Aww yeah it's great isn't it. Does he like to bask in the sunshine? Our sits in the most direct light to soak it all in.
rbar174@reddit
Yes, and yes he does. He'll sleep in very odd places and positions just to enjoy a tiny bit of sunlight coming in. Dogs are wonderful.
Digidigdig@reddit
My dog would have looked up at me and then proceeded to take a shit in the middle of the tulips. He does it with daffodils all the time.

Haha. That's true love when they're mid-shit making full eye contact.

My daughter is 3. I love her to bits, she's my everything, but man...she is hard word. Incredibly stressed with work and life stuff to the point that I'm close to completely burning out.
But at night when she's tucked in bed and I'm reading her bedtime story, she's started laying her head on my arm.
We cuddle and hug and kiss and very openly show love for one another, but that one thing gets me every time. First time she did it I cried. Such a simple act of care, her complete trust in me. It's shown me I'm breaking the cycle. It doesn't fix the mountain of stress, the bulls piling up, or fix trying to put food on the table next month. But it mends my heart a little more each time she does it.

Seeing a man who loves being a dad. For some reason, I had thought most men didn't really want kids in general (and let's be real, Reddit amplifies stories of sad and bad dads more than the good). Every time I glimpse a man who is all smiles with his kids, playing with them or actively chatting with them on the way home from school, it makes my heart happy 😀

Gingerpett@reddit
Blackbirds are the best birds!!!
I spent an afternoon once, with a friend, looking through her birds of England book that also had a little thing attached where you could listen to the songs of those birds. We spent the whole afternoon narrowing it down to our favourite three bird songs (blackbird, nightingale, marsh bittern) and then finally decided the blackbird was the best.
Was such a brilliant afternoon.

I’ve been chronically ill for nearly twenty years, with an illness that leaves me mostly sofa or bedbound. One of the biggest things I had to learn when the horizons of my life shrank so drastically was to find gratitude in the small things in my life now that I could no longer do the big stuff. It took me a long time to learn this, but it’s made my life immeasurably better in so many ways - being forced to slow down and “smell the flowers” has, ironically, given the circumstances that forced it upon me, changed my life for the better. Being someone who was always on the go, and who has ADHD (and thus the attention span of a squirrel), this was really hard, but after so many years, being able to see the small joys in everyday life has become something really special to me.
So, in no particular order, here’s my list so far today:
-sunlight catching the loch across the fields, the smell of the rain on my garden, my husband bringing me coffee and a hug, my cat asleep on my lap, waking up not in pain (doesn’t happen often so it’s great when it does!), hearing the seagulls and curlews outside, not to mention watching the lambs bouncing about in the fields behind the house with their long-suffering mums. The light patterns on the fields caused by the clouds blowing across the sky, my landlord waving at me as he goes by in his tractor, laughing at next doors‘ dogs having a lovely time tangling their owner up in their leads for the umpteenth time, my daughter sending me a silly photo of our other cat, and the really good coffee I’m currently drinking. Not to mention reading everyone else’s replies on this great thread 🙂

He’s really prone to tonsillitis - he’s had it 4 times in 6 months so will probably have to have them taken out eventually but when he’s poorly with it, he’s so horribly pale that when he’s well and he has glorious red cheeks, it makes me feel so happy.
