New to overlanding - what do I need?
Posted by Electronic-Site7666@reddit | overlanding | View on Reddit | 30 comments
Just bought a 2017 wrangler v6.
Looking to do some over landing here and there. I live in Miami so I don’t think there many crazy places.
What I know -
Jeep has a lift.
Front independent suspension.
Has rough country rims, 20s, don’t think that’s good for off road, trails, rocks etc.
I’d like to build something practical. Not over done just cuz its looks cool. Heavier means less mpg which jeeps already suck at lol

That jeep is sick

Appreciate you 👊 I was so happy with this fund. Previous owner took great care.

You’re good to go right now. If you want to drive significantly more difficult trails then smaller wheels, same or larger tires, and a compressor to air up/down will be the next step.
Then all you need is normal camping gear like anyone at your local state park tent camping has.

Nothing. Just go use it

A new truck

Just drive it. Use it and learn what you need as you go.

Lots of money

Are you going solo or camping with spouse, other or family?

A shovel and some tools

Get out there first and foremost but have a basic set of gear like deflator and inflator, repair kit, a way to get a message out if you break down. I prioritized self recovery next because you cant be dependent on someone else. Third go get that lift and capability.

17” wheels 33” tires. Look for Rubicon take offs. Do not go to 35-37” tires. It will just make you slower off the line, to stop and worse gas. Overlanding is not rock crawling. Learn OnX, gaiagps. Trails off-road is great software. Carry water. Two traction boards. Shovel. YouTube for dream trips. The two main things you really need are the most expensive. Time and gas.

Wheels and tires, 17” wheels on 36” or 37” tires with a 3”-4” lift. A winch, some extra lights and a gas can or two. Maybe a roof rack.

Don’t overspend. Take everything slowly and buy things as needed.

Yeah, thank you for this advice. The need your reaction is so full and crazy.

It’s a giant rabbit hole of items that will burn whatever savings you have. Look into used when possible to start and see if you want to continue. Overlanding is fun and cool, but buying that 2k tent to only use a handful of times isn’t. (I’ve fallen into this with two rtt)

Troll post or just plain cringe

Someplace to sleep (tent and mosquito netting will essential down there), some spare gas and water, a cooler to keep food and drinks in, some emergency stuff like first aid, stuff to work on your jeep if needed….. that’s it.
It’s basically just a road trip in the dirt. No need to go overboard with things…. People have gone overlanding with much less. All the super cool creature comforts and stuff are extra.
A winch is never a bad idea though. Still, not required and it’s a heavy piece of gear to keep mounted to your vehicle
cookerz30@reddit
I would argue that unless you're going to Alaska, no one needs "spare gas".

OnX subscription and a sense of adventure. Find someplace that looks appealing for both journey and destination. Throw your current camping gear in the Jeep and head out.
Keep notes on what you’d like to have, and notes on what to get rid of.
When you find what you want, decide if it’s a good place to get the best, or to same some coin. And always be ware of the Overland tax.

Start with what you have then build on it. IMO, maybe change the protection around your Jeep but you don’t need to go bigger tire.
You need to drive, eat and sleep. Heavier you get, more gas you will consume. You need navigation, comm (for safety if you are off grid). A ground tent will do as a start and an ice cooler.
What you need is to go out and see if you like it then upgrade.

Changing my thermostat this weekend and looking forward to taking it on its first actual adventure very soon! Thank you!

I’d start by taking your vehicle out and go places you’re interested in going. Overlanding could look like you driving on dirt roads across a country, or rock crawling up and down mountains, so there’s no one size fits all, it depends entirely on what you want todo with it. I would recommend using your best judgment when taking it out, and trying not to get stuck.
Point is, you need to answer this question for yourself, as no one here can pick your adventure for you.

Thanks. Good approach.

Just need to head out on successively longer outings to figure out what you personally need
A_bike_guy@reddit
What do you need? A willingness to get out of populated areas. Your Jeep is your key.
From there, just get a tent, hammock, or air mattress for sleeping inside the Jeep. A cooler, a small stove (if you are planning to cook), and water. If you are going off-road, take a buddy in a 2nd vehicle and some light recovery gear.
Don't spend thousands on gear before you go a few times. You'll quickly learn what you want and need. Some gear looks really cool online but it's usability fails to match the cost. Hit up the vast amount of forums for ideas and product reviews.
Just get out there. The rest sorts itself out.
bemery96@reddit
Your Wrangler doesn’t have independent front suspension. Not being snarky, just educating.
Electronic-Site7666@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I was told that, I didn’t think it looked like it 😂
