When do people brush their teeth before or after breakfast?

So a bit of context having a casual conversation at work with a colleague and somehow we ended up talking about brushing teeth, he mentioned that he brushes his teeth after breakfast and shower so his teeth are minty fresh before he leaves his house. I on the other hand thought this was weird and I brush my teeth before breakfast and everyone I personally know does this too. Am in the minority or majority where teeth are brushed before breakfast?
Raisinsandfairywings@reddit
As soon as I wake up. I want my mouth to be fresh for breakfast and starting the day. And I hate the thought of brushing my teeth post-breakfast and having bits of breakfast get on my toothbrush. Plus it’s easier to just do it first thing before I go downstairs.
my-big-day-out@reddit
Dentist here. Brush as soon as you wake up and last thing at night
AvatarIII@reddit
As an expert, what is the logic of brushing your teeth and then not eating anything and then brushing your teeth again? It does seem counter intuitive to me.
Blind_Warthog@reddit
Not a dentist but as far as I’m aware brushing before bed gets rid of the food. Brushing first thing gets rid of the plaque causing bacteria festering overnight. Also pre protects your teeth from acids in your breakfast.
AvatarIII@reddit
If you brushed your teeth at night, where did the plaque come from? I only wake up with plaque if I forget to brush them before bed.
Blind_Warthog@reddit
You know best. And as I said I’m not a dentist. I’ve never had plaque or cavities and I’ve always followed my dentists advice of brushing on a night and as soon as I wake. So anecdotally it works.
wormrage@reddit
the ease/rate of developing cavities is also genetic because of the bacteria responsible for it! brushing your teeth also helps prevent things like gum disease when youre 80 though so yknow.. id rather take precautions and just brush teeth properly first and last thing in your day anyway, because no real harm done taking care of yourself a little extra 🤷
AvatarIII@reddit
Fair enough, wherever I'm doing it's working because I have no cavities or fillings at 40 🤷♂️
BuckfastAndHairballs@reddit
Genetics play a massive part. I take care of my teeth and still have tons of issues when other people i know brush once a day and don't have any fillings.
Namiweso@reddit
Can confirm. Part of the once a day group.
Never had any issues. From 14-30 never went the dentist either (old one was knocked down and never bothered getting into another).
Had three visits at my new one and no issues. Teeth are absolutely fine
BuckfastAndHairballs@reddit
Just to clarify though i still think people should brush their teeth twice a day even if once a day doesn't give them tooth issues. It still causes bad breath lol
Namiweso@reddit
I’m screwed anyway. Issues with stomach acid means my breaths not the greatest regardless.
scott94@reddit
Definitely true and very frustrating!
Blind_Warthog@reddit
I guess the real acid test (no pun intended) will be how good our teeth are at 70. Meet back here in thirty years?
spik0rwill@reddit
Oooh! Exciting. Saved the post!
KingGeedo91@reddit
Bacteria builds in your mouth overnight at an increased rate due to less saliva. Your mouth doesn’t need food to produce plaque.
Spicymargx@reddit
I was advised that brushing your teeth makes them more sensitive to acids for 30 mins after. I always brush after breakfast if I have it, but then again I do drink coffee pretty much immediately after brushing. Wondering if someone from a dental background can clarify!
tahzogal@reddit
It's actually the opposite way around. Eating increases the pH of your mouth, and you should wait 30-60 mins after eating to brush your teeth - otherwise you are brushing the acids into your teeth. Rinse with water immediately after eating, but wait to brush.
KeaAware@reddit
If eating increases the pH then your mouth is getting less acidic, not more.
tahzogal@reddit
Oops yeah you're right, I meant to say decreases the pH. The overall environment after eating is more acidic.
Spicymargx@reddit
Ahh I get you, thank you for explaining!
Blind_Warthog@reddit
I heard that bacteria overnight eats into enamel because of less saliva. Fluoride in toothpaste then helps that before you eat sugars, acids etc.
Dadbodposterboy@reddit
You brush at night for you and in the morning for your friends/family/colleagues
AvatarIII@reddit
So after breakfast but before work? Which is what I do.
my-big-day-out@reddit
Removes food (mostly from dinner).
During sleep you produce less saliva (think of it as a natural defence fluid). Bacteria therefore build up in larger numbers, so brushing protects teeth
chrisrazor@reddit
And before each meal, right? (I don't do this, but saw a programme a while back that said you should.)
my-big-day-out@reddit
No. Not before every meal. Bad idea.
Chew gum for 10-15 mins after eating
binaryhextechdude@reddit
Makes zero sense. Brush, sleep brush, then spend all day eating and don't brush at all.
ermCaz@reddit
You can literally go on YouTube and watch a guy test his saliva with these methods using PH strips.. before eating is correct
binaryhextechdude@reddit
Still doesn't make any sense. Apparently sleeping is awful for teeth but eating and not brushing is a-okay
GetCapeFly@reddit
Food =/= bacteria. Bacteria which feeds off sugar from food builds up overnight. If you don’t remove that before eating you’re effectively pouring petrol on a bonfire. Brushing before eating is putting the fire out first.
mynameisollie@reddit
I’m not gonna do that, it makes my breakfast taste like shit.
zipitdirtbag@reddit
Thank you for this.
I was gonna say, "my dentist said:" but now I don't need to. 😊
Practical-Stuff-6306@reddit
I brush my teeth twice a day, yet my teeth have a yellow tint to them, I drink a lot of tea and coffee tho. Any tips?
GetCapeFly@reddit
Rinse your mouth with water after staining foods and try to drink tea/coffee is one sitting rather than constantly sipping throughout the day. Using a straw for cold tea and coffees helps also.
1Marmalade@reddit
Don’t use any abrasive/whitening toothpaste.
They are simply more abrasive.
Use a dedicated tooth whitening system, ideally with custom trays to fit the teeth well. It takes time but will slowly oxidize stains that are within the very structure of the ( natural) teeth. This is both safe and highly effective.
The way I explain it to patients is that you can scrub a wall as much as you like, but it won’t change the color. Bleaching will.
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
What about those little hard rubbers for rubbing the stains off?
1Marmalade@reddit
IDK. LMK. Sounds reasonable. Maybe?
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
These things:
1Marmalade@reddit
Looks like an odd toothbrush. It won’t help. I thought you meant a rotating diamond impregnated rubber cup device.
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
It's not a brush, more like a very hard rubber: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wisdom-Tooth-Stain-Eraser-Pack/dp/B0764HLZTW
PancakesSnug@reddit
do you have any recommendations for what systems to buy?
campfirecookies@reddit
The best whitening gel is called Enlighten. You get it from the dentist. I’ve tried many and the results from this one are seriously amazing! Transformed my teeth and my sisters. It is expensive though
1Marmalade@reddit
Not really. They are all quite similar. I bought a system 26 yrs ago when I first moved to the USA. I noticed my teeth were remarkably yellow compared to most Americans. It was cheap. Boil-and-bite trays. 15% carbamide peroxide. After many uses it was a huge improvement.
Now I’m a dentist here in the states. I make custom trays for patients. We sell 15-30% bleaching gels. Any concentration works well; the lower ones take longer.
They work very well in almost all situations. It just takes time. Some get good results in a few 30-60 minute sessions. Some take 30 sessions. All works. Long term results. I just bleach once a year for 30 mins.
I never use whitening toothpaste. I drink tea/coffee every day. Why not? It’s lovely and I can still have white teeth.
Bigfootsbooots@reddit
Any tips for how to manage this when there's composite work involved?
One of my front teeth is partially reconstructed with composite (I think that's the right word?). I want to keep my natural teeth white but I know the trays won't affect the composite, and I don't know how to keep that balance. Is there any way to whiten a composite?
1Marmalade@reddit
Good question. Composites do stain slowly over time. So do teeth. But the whitening only bleaches natural teeth. This is an issue.
Personally, I would whiten normally as much as I like and then have a dentist polish the composite; it’s likely surface stains could come off.
TazTazTAZTazTaz_@reddit
Encryul tooth powder.
pervertsage@reddit
Eucryl
Blind_Warthog@reddit
Over brushing can cause abrasion on the enamel which is then more susceptible to staining. I’m in the same boat. Brush regularly and thoroughly but big tea drinker.
superioso@reddit
Teeth are naturally slightly yellow, not bright white.
Intruder313@reddit
This is what my dentist advised and I leave 20m after that first brushing before eating
FinanceBloke99@reddit (OP)
I do this that's all I need to know. Very interesting to see the various responses. I didn't even know about the half an hour rule after breakfast.
tcpukl@reddit
What about the food though from breakfast?
my-big-day-out@reddit
Eating naturally weakens enamel. If you eat then brush, you’re weakening and brushing enamel away
tcpukl@reddit
Wow, I didn't know that!
Obvious-Water569@reddit
Brushing before breakfast is like wiping your arse before you take a shit.
Also, I don't like anything I eat for breakfast tasting like mint.
So yeah, after.
partywithanf@reddit
Brushing after eating is like eating off a dirty plate.
Pick your analogy.
As someone that brushes before breakfast (as dentists recommend), your food does not taste minty.
Apotak@reddit
Do you wash your plate before or after a meal?
partywithanf@reddit
I’m just pointing out that you can just make an analogy fit your idea.
msully89@reddit
My food tastes minty if I brush before breakfast.
So much so that I used to buy mint free toothpaste, but it's hard to come by and more expensive, so I just brush afterwards if I'm planning on having a nice breakfast.
pervertsage@reddit
How's your fresh orange juice after that?
partywithanf@reddit
I wouldn't know. I'm not into that kind of thing. But it makes zero difference to my breakfast, once I've made it.
geeered@reddit
Brushing after is like cleaning a dirty plate.
Alternatively you can carry your dirty plate around with you all day, so you can use it again at lunch time.
partywithanf@reddit
And you brush your teeth after every time you eat?
_Cridders_@reddit
Yeah I'm not ruining my breakfast, I don't care what's technically better
bxsx0074@reddit
you shouldn't brush right after eating because your enamel is weaker due to the weak acids present in food. If you brush right after you can over time damage your enamel!
dasbudd@reddit
Brushing after is like smearing that shit all over the bathroom
VolcanicBear@reddit
Either 20 minutes before or 20 minutes after is the general recommendation I see from dentists.
Definitely not immediately after.
Nirnroot_Enjoyer@reddit
My hygienist keeps telling me to brush my teeth, and try not to spit out all the toothpaste after.
Sounds annoying, but thinking about it, I only tend to eat breakfast straight after waking up, on the weekend 🤷♂️
HTMListerine@reddit
So apparently I’ve been doing it wrong and I need to brush my teeth before breakfast. But I always get food stuck in my teeth after breakfast, so what do I do? Brush again or just floss? Don’t massively fancy going to work with egg stuck in my teeth
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
After. It seems backwards to me to eat immediately afterwards, both for taste and hygiene reasons.
Would you have a snack after brushing your teeth before bed?
I also use mouthwash before brushing instead of after, which my wife thinks is weird. Maybe it's just me.
TazTazTAZTazTaz_@reddit
It may seem backwards, but it’s not. You’re doing it wrong.
Eddie_F_17@reddit
I think everyone I speak to appreciates my beautifully fresh breath. Mints are fine, but toothpaste does it better.
TazTazTAZTazTaz_@reddit
Think?
Eddie_F_17@reddit
Mustn’t assume.
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
I wait an hour before brushing. It's only really 'wrong' if you don't wait, as your enamel is softer.
Happily-Incorrect@reddit
The real divide here is who has time to do that. I work from home so brushing after breakfast makes more sense to me.
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
You mean dentists advise people to eat after brushing?
Asleep-Exchange-7657@reddit
Oh that’s just nasty 🤢 eating the bacteria from last night
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
You're not supposed to swallow when you brush your teeth. There are often instructions on the pack.
I'm quite impressed that you swallow no saliva while you're asleep or between waking and brushing, too!
OldManChino@reddit
Mouthwash before brushing is correct, else you rinse of the flouride from the the toothpaste (also shouldn't rinse after brushing)
KZakros22@reddit
This is wrong and bad for your teeth.
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
Not if you wait an hour. It's only bad for your teeth if you don't give sufficient time for your enamel to recover after eating certain types of food.
KZakros22@reddit
I find it very interesting you are ignoring a dentists advice.😂
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
Yes, but I'm also following a dentist's advice. There's more than one of them.
It's fine to brush after eating if you wait an hour.
VagabondOfLancashire@reddit
Hopefully not immediately afterwards
TomatoMiserable3043@reddit
No, about an hour afterwards.
rebelallianxe@reddit
I'm same re: brushing after breakfast and my dentist said if you use mouthwash should be before brushing as brushing should be last.
SuccessfulNothing950@reddit
Before.
Waste_Sleep6936@reddit
Before. I was always taught it’s about cleansing the mouth of bacteria that grows during the night. That’s why you brush before bed too - clean it out, so the overnight growth is limited and starting from scratch, in a sense.
Lucajames2309@reddit
Before breakfast. I know it sounds weird but it’s just what I’ve always done
Creative_Rise@reddit
It sounds completely normal to me
SpaceTimeCapsule89@reddit
And me. I always get up, shower, brush my teeth, get ready then eat breakfast. Who are these people that can eat the moment they wake up?
codechris@reddit
My dentist told me after eating so after breakfast
sharkkallis@reddit
Wife is the "before breakfast brusher", I am the "after breakfast brusher".
We've asked numerous dentists over the years and there's no common ground. The only thing they all say is just remember to brush itself.
Smooth-Captain-6151@reddit
I brush when I get up, then have breakfast, then brush again before I leave the house.
I hate smelling what people had for breakfast when I'm on the tube.
-myeyeshaveseenyou-@reddit
Bit of both, after breakfast when I’m not working, before breakfast if I’m working as I leave the house at 6.30am snd I’m not getting up at 5.30 odd to eat as I need medication 30 min before eating
thehoneybadger1223@reddit
I do it after breakfast. Why brush before eating? Isn't that the same as wiping your ass before having a shit? You're just leaving your breakfast chilling in there
MaleficentAnalysis27@reddit
Both actually. First thing when I wake up to get rid of morning breath and then after breakfast/before leaving the house.
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
Brushing my teeth is literally the 2nd thing I do after getting up, after my morning loo use lol.
As for the evening, I sit in bed for a bit with YouTube videos on in the background scrolling my phone. When I’m finally tired enough to, I go to the loo and do my teeth after then get back into bed and go to sleep.
picnicbythemotorway@reddit
Solved this issue by not eating breakfast
skailantern@reddit
idk how people brush their teeth AFTER breakfast! doesn’t the taste in your mouth when you wake up make you feel disgusted??
Diligent-Step-7253@reddit
What’s your orange juice, or cereal milk tasting then? There’s no use if you’ve brushed before sleep = some time after your evening meal. I’m waiting half an hour after breakfast then i brush.
skailantern@reddit
cereal tastes fine to me. not much of an orange juice drinker lolll
lunabelfries@reddit
How the hell are people brushing afterwards. You’re going to eat breakfast with gross morning mouth??
Diligent-Step-7253@reddit
How’s that cereal milk tasting?
Quiet_surprise79@reddit
You want the taste of your breakfast to be tainted by month freshness?!
ben_vtr@reddit
As some someone suffering from anxiety, usually when I remember/can bothered to, usually late afternoon.
smellyfeet25@reddit
i do it after. . i like my mouth clean and fresh as i leave the house
Nandor1262@reddit
Before breakfast is the recommended way
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
I brush my teeth as soon as I wake up, and by the time I have breakfast the minty taste is already gone. I absolutely hate when people talk to me with morning breath.
People often say, “Brushing before breakfast is like wiping your ass before you take a shit,” but in my experience the ones who say that tend to have some of the worst hygiene. Maybe we shouldn't shower because we will sweat later, maybe we shouldn't wash our hand before cooking because it will get dirty anyway. Maybe we should never brush our teeth at all cos we will always be eating? Do it once before death maybe?
Having lived in other countries, I’ve never come across a population with worse dental care than in the UK.
zipitdirtbag@reddit
Fully agree.
When I was in my teens I worked with a guy (he was early 20's) who said he couldn't brush his teeth because it made him 'feel sick'. He HAD TO wait until after he had breakfast...
But we started work at 06.00 and he didn't have breakfast until at least 10.00 so we had to smell his stinky breath for the first four hours of every shift.
bex9990@reddit
Statistically, the UK has good oral health when compared globally, so I'm not sure where your info is coming from? Do you have a source other than 'being in the UK'?
saltwatersunsets@reddit
To be pedantic, worse dental care and good oral health are 2 different things. We don’t have good access to dental care due to the paucity of NHS dentistry and high private costs in many regions of UK, however, people do have good access to oral hygiene measures like toothbrushes, toothpaste & fluorinated water.
bex9990@reddit
They are two different things, but very closely related. Dentistry and access to toothbrushes/ fluoridation in water etc. would all come under dental care. Those things lead to good oral health. Unless you think we have good oral health despite dental care?!
saltwatersunsets@reddit
Compared to other nations globally, we reap the benefits of widespread cheap access to basic dental hygiene measures. Compared to similar socioeconomic nations, we have terrible access to dental care i.e. from actual dentists.
bex9990@reddit
But good oral health, even compared to similar socioeconomic nations. If we really did have overall worse dental care than many other countries, as the comment I replied to said, I don't think we'd have such good oral health.
I am not disputing, btw, that some places in the country have a lack of access to dentists, but that is not the whole of dental care.
saltwatersunsets@reddit
Oral health tends to come before dental care. If you have good oral health, you often don’t need dental care. If your oral health declines and you need the input of dental treatment… that’s when you’re in trouble in the UK.
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
No, I don’t have statistics to back this up. When I mentioned “dental care,” what I really meant was that many people seem to have poor dental hygiene. In my personal experience, I’ve encountered more people with very bad breath in the UK than anywhere else I’ve been. Whenever the topic of brushing teeth comes up, I often see people here making excuses for not doing it regularly. Speaking from my very personal experience, I have only ever heard excuses about brushing teeth from British population. Not all, of course. But there is a pattern here. I don't know why.
What I find ironic is that this is a country with far greater access to oral healthcare than most of the world, yet that access doesn’t mean much if people don’t make use of it. After all, what’s the point of having a toothbrush if it never gets used? I hope you understand what I mean.
I come from what many would call a third-world country. Even though we don’t have free healthcare or easy access to dental services, we still do the basics very well brushing and flossing our teeth. When I was in elementary school, we even brought toothbrushes to school, and teachers would have us brush our teeth after meals. It was simply part of personal hygiene, just like showering or keeping the rest of our bodies clean.
bex9990@reddit
I think the fact we have excellent oral health as a nation (fewer cavities etc.,) shows we are pretty good at teeth cleaning and oral care, whatever your personal feelings are.
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
I don't really get why you are getting defensive when my post was entirely based on personal experience. Stats can easily be skewed by a variety of factors.
Dental care in the UK is more accessible, so the general population has more opportunity to 'treat' any issues over their lifetime leading to a better stats overall. It doesn't say anything about personal dental hygiene i.e. brushing their teeth everyday.
That's be impossible to know and most people are never honest about how often they brush their teeth.
bex9990@reddit
Lol, ok, your personal experience is clearly far superior to actual statistics, believe whatever.
skailantern@reddit
100% agreed. the logic they use is crazy 😂
reissekm5@reddit
Well said, totally agree.
bangkokali@reddit
My dentist told me to brush before eating food or if eating breakfast to wait 30 mins or so and then brush. If you dont do that you are just moving the food around your mouth
Beartato4772@reddit
Yeah, plus you soften the teeth with food and then rub the fuck out of them.
Same for people who mouthwash after brushing. It's like painting your walls then immediately power washing them.
boomerangchampion@reddit
Wait, should I be doing mouthwash first? Or leaving a gap after brushing?
Here I was thinking I'd mastered this 30 years ago.
myyvrxmas@reddit
Mouthwash is usually very acidic and unnecessary. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating and then brush.
cerswerd@reddit
Floss, mouthwash, brush.
Awkward-Wishbone-615@reddit
Skip the mouthwash it's killing your good bacteria
ambadawn@reddit
My dentist said not to use mouthwash at all.
FranzFerdinand51@reddit
Mine told me to at least dilute it 1 to 3 if i wanted to use it every single night. Apparently theyre too harsh to be the last thing youll leave on your teeth before bed.
NewEstablishment5444@reddit
I’m pretty sure the 30 minutes is to do with enamel sensitivity, rather than “moving food around your mouth”.
CriticalCentimeter@reddit
Yea, let's the pH settle down I believe
DazzleBMoney@reddit
Before, anyone who says otherwise is doing it wrong. Bacteria builds up in your mouth when you sleep, even if you brushed jus before going to bed, so it’s always better to brush before eating, otherwise your consuming that build up of bacteria with your breakfast. Plus it ruins the taste of my food if I have gammy morning breath. People who don’t brush first aren’t to be trusted
e-pancake@reddit
even worse if someone is on certain medications or breathes through their mouth when they’re asleep, the dryness is bad for the teeth. defo a before brush
e-pancake@reddit
before, as per recommendations (also it’s just easier considering the 30 min wait between brushing and eating. can just get on with my day after)
onlyoneofmetoday@reddit
I brush when I wake up because I don't eat breakfast.
Dull_Hawk9416@reddit
I have a friend who only brushes AFTER breakfast. So until we eat her breath honks. Never mind the fact you’re not supposed to brush within an hour of eating. Acids from food and drink soften your enamel that will get damaged
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
I have asked the dentist I see, she says brushing before breakfast is best.
Reasonable-Horse1552@reddit

Blind_Warthog@reddit
Eeewwww
Dranask@reddit
Maybe but I’m in my 70s I’ve still got my teeth and never had bad breath.
New_Line4049@reddit
Why would you brush before breakfast? You brush your teeth then immediately make them dirty again by eating breakfast. Makes no sense. Cleaning them after breakfast means youre removing build up from your breakfast.
Blind_Warthog@reddit
Food isn’t the problem. Bacteria is. Of which there’s a disgusting colony that’s formed through the night.
Neddlings55@reddit
I brush after my morning coffee and before bed. I chew gum after eating or drinking throughout the day.
Im 46 and have never needed any dental treatment apart from braces. I shall not change my dental routine.
DLNN_DanGamer@reddit
Bold of you to assume I have breakfast.
binaryhextechdude@reddit
You brush your teeth to clean them. So you brush before bed, sleep, brush again then eat and leave the house. So your teeth aren't clean when you go out. I've never understood the clean on waking that people do. Nothing has happened to make them dirty.
BengaliBunny85@reddit
When I was younger I was never taught to brush before breakfast. My cousin told me he did it before and I thought yuk gross. But I would guess for the past 5 years (maybe a TikTok thing) it’s become common knowledge to do it before breakfast. I’m 40 if that provides any context.
Ok_Cow_3431@reddit
before. Second thing I do after getting out of bed (the first is have a pee)
South-Visual3803@reddit
Just randomly when I walk in the bathroom- sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes many dry brushes inbetween and others it’s probably every hour.
Then the panic to floss and scrub once a week for five hours when I remember it’s a thing.
summerpeachxox@reddit
I don't eat breakfast but I wake up, coffee and catch up on everything, shower then brush teeth after shower! I know you should brush your teeth before consuming anything but I need coffee and coffee after brushing teeth would be beyond gross
sydney-opera-house@reddit
brush teeth before, like first thing I do. then after breakfast mouthwash bc I hate the taste food leaves in my mouth. then brush again before bed. (I will admit I use mouthwash after every meal)
Spottyjamie@reddit
Used to be after breakfast, however now im on tablets i have to take first thing two hours before eating i brush on waking
jordsta95@reddit
Wake up, brush teeth, start working/doing whatever on a day off, then about an hour or two later, eat breakfast.
seklas1@reddit
After breakfast. You’re supposed to not eat or drink anything for like half an hour after brushing, atleast, so toothpaste can do its job. If you wash your teeth and straight away grab a breakfast, your food likely rubbed off all the toothpaste again, so you’re not just losing the minty smell, you’re also just not using the properties of said toothpaste. At best you rubbed your teeth with a toothbrush and what didn’t get brushed is staying and growing again.
AvatarIII@reddit
You're also supposed to wait half an hour at least after eating before brushing your teeth because eating softens your enamel which you can damage by brushing.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit
That's what I was told by my dentist and why I brush after breakfast.
DanFarrell98@reddit
Don't know how people can do it before breakfast the mint flavour ruins anything you'll eat
BigMagic88@reddit
Usually whenever I can be arsed at any point before I go out but… I’ve been eating chia seeds for the past few days so I either need to remember to do it after or keep a stick handy. They are infuriating when you spend 30 mins trying to get them out but actually pushing them deeper 😂
LilacRose32@reddit
It depends. If I am going to buy breakfast on the way to work, or am staying at a hotel then before.
After if I wake up hungry.
Monkeyboogaloo@reddit
Brush when I get up
Alert_Mine7067@reddit
I brush mine before breakfast, for two reasons, I can't stand the taste of my mouth in the morning and can't wait to get it shifted, and I'm afraid of having bad breath so I go mad when I'm brushing my tongue to the point where I sometimes vomit, which I don't want to do after eating.
Reasonable-Isopod736@reddit
I do it after.
I brushed my teeth before bed, and haven't eaten anything since. I know theres build up in your sleep, but it was already in your mouth, whats 10 more minutes.
TazTazTAZTazTaz_@reddit
You’re just moving food around.
Reasonable-Isopod736@reddit
I mouthwash once with just water, water pic, actual floss, mouthwash properly and then brush.

About 30 mins to an hour after.
I’m not brushing my teeth and weakening the enamel to then drink a coffee and/or some orange juice shortly afterwards.
40something_milf@reddit
Before, before I do anything (other than pee). I brush my teeth while running the shower for a bit
sleepyprojectionist@reddit
I brush my teeth after breakfast.
For the best effect you shouldn’t rinse straight away, so I brush before jumping in the shower and then rinse before I leave the flat.
heyitsed2@reddit
Before but I don't eat breakfast til I get to work, at least 30 minutes later.
sol1dsn4k3@reddit
It’s absolutely nasty to eat before brushing your teeth. You have loads of bacteria in your mouth from hours of sleeping and not eating.
Also, according to dentists you should not brush straight after eating and wait at least half an hour because otherwise you end up weakening the enamel in your teeth (something about the the acids from the food affecting the softened enamel after eating).
So you’re absolutely in the right here my friend.
I think this is a white thing btw. I believe other ethnicities tend to do the right thing and brush first. I could be wrong on both of course, just personal experience/anecdotal evidence.

I've also had my mind blown having this conversation with friends.
Personally, I brush as soon as I get up. It feels icky to be going about my business with morning mouth. I know a lot of (very hygienic) people who wait until after breakfast, whereas that seems crazy to me.
Occasionally I'll give them another quick brush after breakfast (if I've had a particularly strong and lingering coffee, say), but that's not very often.
koalabear20@reddit
I’ll always brush my teeth when I get up, I usually don’t eat anything until a few hours after but even if I was the kind of person who ate first thing I would still brush my teeth first, if I’m going out I will brush my teeth again before leaving lol.
dasbudd@reddit
I brush in the shower just after I wake up and before breakfast.
himit@reddit
Dentist told me to do it before - then the toothpaste protects your teeth from breakfast.
Hate the taste so it's the first thing I do when I wake up
kittykat7931@reddit
Monday to Friday I brush my teeth before breakfast, on the weekends after breakfast. During the week I’m up and out the door just after 6am with a cup of tea and won’t eat breakfast until 8ish. Weekends are more leisurely so I have breakfast then get ready.
anonoaw@reddit
Before, but I don’t eat breakfast as soon as I get up.
Exxtraa@reddit
I read you are meant to do it before breakfast but that seems wrong to me. My teeth and breath would be bad to start the day. Always brushed after breakfast.
Naive-Interaction567@reddit
After if I have time to wait 30 mins. Before otherwise. I have busy children so I can forget if I don’t do it first thing.
Wishmaster891@reddit
wfh, i actually dont brush till about 12pm woops.. then before bed of course
Fine_Analyst_4408@reddit
At least 30 minutes after breakfast. I hate eating after brushing my teeth both because it tastes disgusting and because I hate making my teeth dirty again right after cleaning them. The 30 minutes is to make sure my enamel isn't weakened by anything I consumed before brushing.
Lost_Repeat_725@reddit
Brush before breakfast but with no toothpaste so I don’t have a minty tasting breakfast, and then brush properly afterwards just before I leave the house
Lovecraftian666@reddit
Don’t be like me if you can and be lazy and skint and scared of the dentist for 15 years.
4 teeth removed, several fillings, prescription high fluoride toothpaste and several grand poorer. At least my front teeth are alright.
Brush folks whatever you do.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
I don’t really eat breakfast so usually about 20 minutes after my first coffee.. because I can’t drink my first coffee of the day with minty toothpaste mouth.
ScarletScotYew@reddit
It's usually the last bit of my morning routine - get 01
One-Staff5504@reddit
After of course
Normal_Mud_9070@reddit
I eat breakfast and then half an hour later floss and brush them.
Flaky-Walrus7244@reddit
After breakfast, but not right after. I brush my teeth shortly before leaving the house
pgnlzbth@reddit
I brush my teeth as soon as I get up
b135702@reddit
Before but I leave the house at around 7.30 and eat breakfast around 10 so it only makes sense this way around!
moonlight_xpress@reddit
It's recommended to brush your teeth before food. If you prefer doing it after, you need to wait 20-30min.
kingpudsey@reddit
If i ate breakfast at home - brush after.
