So, Captain Trip's anyone? Or Tubeneck, depending on your end of the country. FUN!
MovinOnUp2TheMoon@reddit
I looked it up, and learned: Captain Trips is a fictional virus from Stephen King's 1978 novel "The Stand," which is a highly contagious and lethal strain of influenza that wipes out 99.4% of the human population. It was developed as a biological weapon and is known for its rapid spread and deadly effects.
Before this I only knew Captain Trips as Jerry Garcia.
CharismaticAlbino@reddit
I'll lead with that next time š, thank you. Not being a Grateful Dead fan, I never knew that was a nickname for Jerry. We both learned something today š
MovinOnUp2TheMoon@reddit
The Captain Trips nickname might have had something to do with ātravelingā¦ā like tripping on an astral plane?
And who better to guide us in this travel, than this guy who can make the guitar do these amazing things, in the context of this Rock And Roll crew? Let him be the Captain of the Trips!

Not being a Stephen King fan (of his books - I know his cultural significance, and believe heās a great novelist), I never knew of the Virus. It does sound like King-style Horror.
Iāve enjoyed learning with you!
Thanks, Cheers!

It was a fun ride! Blessings from here on out friend š

There are no OTC tests for this are there? I mean, I know there's nothing you can do whether you have this or not. Same with most viruses. Also realize PCR tests in hospitals can test for all respiratory viruses.
Dapper_dreams87@reddit
No they have no tests. When I was hospitalized for this they determined it via symptoms, inflammation in my chest, and the fact that I tested negative for everything else.
Dapper_dreams87@reddit
I had this at the end of February. Couldn't breathe and finally ended up in the ER. My oxygen was at 73 and I was admitted for 3 days. They said per the CT scan that I had a large amount of inflammation around my lungs. I came home very weak and I am STILL working on getting my stamina back after 5 weeks. I am still so tired and I still have some mucus coming up here and there. Be careful
Landererer@reddit
So thatās what I had for 3 weeks. I was in Hayward a month ago via SFO. I got home and thought I had allergies. I caught covid in January and this was too mild to be a cold, but, I had an unbelievable amount of mucous in various colors. Gross cough, not bad, just wet. Ears and nose totally clogged all the time. Went through a handkerchief a day. My ears are still not quite the same.. but at least Iām not so clogged up.
somethingwholesomer@reddit
āExperts warnā is a little extreme. Read the article, it happens every year. Itās a little higher this year
LuxTheSarcastic@reddit
Does masking up for this one work too?
nottodayautoimmune@reddit
Pretty sure I have this. I was not aware that a human being could possibly produce this much vile yellow-green gunk. Itās in my chest, my sinuses, my ears. I am taking antibiotics plus an obscene amount of prednisone on top of my asthma inhaler and my lungs still sound like theyāre growling at the world long after I complete an exhale.
ov3rsimplified@reddit
Iāve had it for over a month and I live in sw MT.
lepetitcoeur@reddit
Interesting. I am just finally getting over something like this in the Midwest. Crazy amounts of snot and mucus draining. Going on week four with my nose still needing to be blown a couple times a day. In the first 3 days I used 4 full Kleenex boxes. Had intense sinus pressure/ pain the second and third days, so I assumed a sinus infection.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I had the same thing and Iām in Florida. I assumed it was Covid.
lepetitcoeur@reddit
I tested negative for Covid.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I did too but I thought it was some weird variant or something. The third day I was in so much pain I thought I was dying.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
The initials mean what?
EauNo@reddit
If you click on the linked article it will tell you. Human metapneumovirus.
Mapkar@reddit
Yes it will, after dodging through obnoxious ads and video pop ups.
tiffanytrashcan@reddit
Nah, I blame anyone not using an ad blocker in 2026. Ublock is great in Firefox.
I see it the same as driving without a seatbelt.
Mapkar@reddit
Thatās fair, I run multiple layers on my iPhone, but Redditās internal link browser doesnāt always cooperate with them.
radikul@reddit
Google told me even faster. No pop ups either.
jonnyinternet@reddit
Bro, this is Reddit, we don't read
spama123@reddit
Never have I ever had so much mucus flowing out of my nose for more than two weeks. It started with this weird feeling in the chest and then an intense runny nose lasting for an entire week. Cough came after the runny nose. 2 weeks now and I still canāt smell out of my nose and still mucus. Got it from working at a primary school⦠kid legit had the most viscous mucus coming out of their nose straight for 2+ weeks before they infected me by coughing directly in my face. Now multiple students have the same symptoms. Do not recommend š¢ please protect yourselves!
mar421@reddit
Same here
varkona@reddit
My family and I had a similar experience. We were mostly sick for an entire month. I would blow my nose minute after minute and the mucus was endless. I have never seen so much green coming out from my nose in my entire life. We also had really high fevers and were coughing left and right. My 1 year old had a flowing nose for weeks while my mom and I had lingering cough for almost a month. This was back in February so I wonder if we were among the first ones to get it.
Jezuesblanco@reddit
Iām not in the Bay Area but Iāve been in bed the last few days so congested I was throwing up
Throwawayconcern2023@reddit
Swollen gums?
Jezuesblanco@reddit
Im not sure about the gums but my tongue was sore and throat really hurt
dogs-are-perfect@reddit
My tongue was sore too. Got scalloped tongue. What a weird symptom.
dogs-are-perfect@reddit
Iāve been dealing with this for almost a month. Symptoms are mild so not worth a doctor other than the length of time. Iām so tired of coughing.
sharmas13@reddit
Im young(ish) and healthy and Iām just getting over this after three awful weeks. Endless mucus and a wet cough that would make strangers jump. Just when I thought it was over it moved into my sinuses and then ruptured my eardrum. Not fun, do not recommend.
ViolettaQueso@reddit
Itās awful.
